He's a very meticulous actor. For his role on Lost, he studied Physics and Maths. Many of the equations his character wrote were Davies's work.

Born in Saugus, California. He lived in Traverse City, Michigan in early childhood, and moved to Kansas with his mother after his parents' divorce. His mother contracted Lupus, and died from complications. After his mother's death, in the mid 70's, he went to live with his father and step-mother in Santa Barbara, California. They then moved to Rockford, Iowa in '85 or '86.

At a "Lost" auction held on August 22, 2010, a prop journal used by his character sold for $27,500.

He was considered for the role of Norman Bates in Psycho (1998) before Vince Vaughn was cast.

Has an older brother, Josh, who is an Air Force pilot. Has a younger brother named Zachary, and younger sister named Katy. Parents were divorced.

Exactly one year older than "Matt Damon", both in "Saving Private Ryan (1998)" as 'Corporal Upham' & 'Private Ryan'. Both were born on 8 October.
