Taylor Sheridan‘s debut film as a screenwriter, Sicario, which earned 3 Oscar nominations, is scheduled to leave Netflix on August 31, 2025. The timing of the film’s exit couldn’t be worse, as it comes on the heels of a positive Sicario 3 update, especially since the threequel spent years languishing in ambiguity.

Franchise star Josh Brolin recently claimed in an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast:

I was like, ‘Yeah, [Sicario 3] is never going to happen.’ And then the producers showed up and Molly [Smith] and [they said], ‘That’s not true!’ Which is fine. And then I just heard recently that it’s very, very real. So, cool.

Sicario has been one of the most celebrated and acclaimed films for a decade since its release. Currently, the film holds an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, leaving critics and audiences in awe of Denis Villeneuve‘s raw, visceral, tense, unyielding, and poignant masterpiece.

A crime thriller with 92% on Rotten Tomatoes that features a script written by Taylor Sheridan will be leaving Netflix in the very near future. Sheridan will be best known to many viewers for creating the Yellowstone universe, as well as shows like Tulsa King, Lioness, Landman, and Mayor of Kingstown.

Sheridan, however, also has an impressive resume outside the world of TV, having written a number of popular movies. He wrote Without Remorse (2021), Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021), Wind River (2017), which he also directed, and Hell or High Water (2016). One of the most notable films he scripted, though, remains 2015's Sicario.

In the wake of Josh Brolin’s upcoming horror thriller Weapons, the actor has churned the rumor mill surrounding the highly anticipated threequel, Sicario: Capos. In a new interview with Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin said the chances of Sicario 3 happening are “very, very real.”

That’s a big deal considering the silence around the project for years. The original Sicario (2015), directed by Denis Villeneuve, was a gritty and intense thriller loved by critics and fans. But its sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, didn’t live up to the hype, especially with Emily Blunt missing from the cast.

Now, talks of Sicario: Capos are heating up again, with a partially written script that producers are reportedly calling “awesome.” However, no director is officially attached to the project, since Villeneuve has indicated he would not be involved, and Stefano Sollima refused to return after the disappointing sequel.

There’s a ton hitting the streamers this month, and August might be one of the strongest lineups we’ve seen in a while. There’s another big Prime Video action comedy I can’t wait to watch (they’ve been on fire lately), plus a new James Gunn series I’ll definitely be checking out after loving “Superman.” And while my taste usually leans more comedy, this month’s picks range from high-seas revenge stories to true-crime thrillers to sci-fi prequels from one of the most famous horror franchises ever. So if you’re looking for something fresh to stream, here are the shows and movies I’m seriously pumped about in August.

Actress Julia Garner made her feature film debut in 2011, playing the role of Sarah in the deprogramming drama "Martha Marcy May Marlene." She quickly landed many additional film roles for her talent and her intensity, appearing in both gentle indie dramas (like "Electrick Children") and studio schlock (like "The Last Exorcism II"). In 2014, Garner already appeared in her ninth feature film, "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," a sequel to the 2005 film "Sin City." She was rolling high, and would only continue to become more famous.

"Sin City," as many remember, was a highly stylized, near-animated film noir directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. It was based on Miller's 1991 comic of the same name, itself designed to be a film noir on steroids. It took the images and themes and stories of old pulp crime stories, and ratcheted up the sex and violence to a dizzying degree.

Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme introduced a complex project called the Korda Land and Sea Phoenician Infrastructure Scheme, and it involved a concept called "the gap." The black comedy movie mainly revolves around Zsa-zsa Karda (Benicio del Toro), an arms dealer and industrialist who, after seeing visions of the afterlife, decides to make amends with his estranged daughter, Sister Liesl (Mia Threapleton). Throughout the movie, Zsa-zsa is hunted down by an unknown killer amid his efforts to spearhead his newfound business venture. 

The Phoenician Scheme is imbued with Wes Anderson's style, meaning that some terms or concepts are deliberately vague or not explained thoroughly in the movie. One of these concepts is the gap, a crucial aspect that could make or break Zsa-zsa as his life and business hang in the balance.

I don’t like the cinema of Wes Anderson. It reminds me of those disjointed incoherent self consciously capricious film-school projects where the student wants to let the world he doesn’t care a fig about the rules.

Continuing his flabbergasting quest for the crest of quirkiness, Wes Anderson has now come up with The Phoenician Scheme a film that rattles all rationale and stirs up a storm in a teacup. Like other Anderson oddities this one too is visualized in cartoonstrip colours, mostly pale green, and a mood of mythologized satire , which itself is problematic for any serious viewing.

And after an enigmatic trailer and some smaller clips (including one that is currently playing before “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” at the Vista in Los Angeles), a new trailer has debuted online. Clearly this is more in line with what you would imagine a studio-cut trailer to be. It more explicitly spells out the plot, with DiCaprio’s Bob starting out as a more passionate revolutionary and rejoining the fray after his child (Chase Infiniti from Apple’s “Presumed Innocent” series) is abducted by a psychopathic colonel (Penn). It’s even set to a jaunty Beyoncé tune most closely associated with the presidential campaign for Kamala Harris.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s new action thriller One Battle After Another is coming to theaters this fall, and the first full trailer has finally dropped. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary who joins forces with old allies when a dangerous enemy shows up again after 16 years.

Their mission this time is to rescue the daughter of one of their own. The cast also includes Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, who makes her film debut.

The story is inspired by the 1990 novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon. Anderson previously adapted Pynchon’s Inherent Vice, and this new project brings his work back to that strange, rebellious world.

Warner Bros. Pictures has revealed the new trailer for One Battle After Another, from Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. Character posters for the film have also been revealed.

The film stars Academy Award and BAFTA winner Leonardo DiCaprio, Oscar and BAFTA winners Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Wood Harris, and Alana Haim.

Anderson directs from his screenplay and produces alongside Oscar and BAFTA nominees Adam Somner and Sara Murphy, with Will Weiske executive producing.

The creative team behind the camera includes several frequent collaborators, among them directors of photography Michael Bauman and Anderson; Oscar-nominated, BAFTA-winning production designer Florencia Martin; and BAFTA-nominated editor Andy Jurgensen.

There’s also Oscar and BAFTA-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, casting director Cassandra Kulukundis, and music by Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated composer Jonny Greenwood.

Principal photography for the film began in January 2024. Filming took place in California and Texas.

Sheridan wrote Sicario: Day of the Soldado in 2018, the action sequel that follows the escalating drug war between the United States and Mexico as the drug cartels begin trafficking terrorists across the border. Sicario: Day of the Soldado is streaming for free on Tubi in the United States and on Netflix globally, where it’s become one of the most popular movies in several countries. The film earned scores of 62% from critics and 66% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $75 million at the box office against a $35 million budget.

A new Wes Anderson comedy will soon be available on streaming. The celebrated director of The Royal Tenenbaums and The Grand Budapest Hotel is known for employing memorable color palettes and production designs and for incorporating unique humor into his narratives.

Anderson's film slate, including Moonrise Kingdom and Isle of Dogs, has garnered him a devoted following and several Academy Award nominations. His movies have largely received praise, and some, notably The Grand Budapest Hotel, have also been commercial hits.

The Phoenician Scheme follows wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro) who is on the run and wanted by myriad governments, the target of scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists and determined assassins. In the midst of chaos he appoints his estranged and only daughter, a nun (Mia Threapleton), to be the sole heir of his estate. She also gets pulled into his globe trotting.
