Steven Spielberg’s One Sentence Changed This 59-Year-Old 'Minority Report' Actor’s Life Forever [Exclusive]
Image
Neal McDonough has played soldiers, senators, snipers, and now — with the release of his new faith-fueled crime thriller Guns and Moses — a righteous avenger. But to many cinephiles, he’s also forever linked to one of the most iconic sci-fi thrillers of the 21st century:Minority Report. The 2002 Steven Spielberg film, starring Tom Cruise and based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, recently earned a coveted spot on The New York Times’ list of the 100 greatest films of the 21st century. And when Collider’s Maggie Lovitt asked McDonough how it feels to be part of such a legacy, the actor lit up with admiration — and gratitude.

“I remember when we were doing the film, and we were doing all this stuff on the screen, we had to go to school,” McDonough said. “Me, Colin [Farrell], and Tom had to go to the school for how to do the hands right,...

Doctor Who Leaves HBO Max: 5 Streaming Platforms That Deserve the Show More Than Disney+
Image
Doctor Who will reportedly leave HBO Max by the end of July, with its spinoff show Torchwood looking at an earlier exit from the streamer (via Inverse). The first thirteen seasons since the 2005 revival series, i.e., from Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor to Josie Whittaker’s, were available on HBO Max, with the last two seasons with Ncuti Gatwa streaming on Disney+.

The last two seasons have reportedly received lower ratings, with the latest 15th season having a whopping 1.7 million viewers, less than season 13. Many have speculated that Disney+ might not renew the deal with BBC and that Doctor Who would not only have to look for a new home for its existing seasons, but also for its upcoming ones.

While Disney+’s renewal looks dicey at the moment, the streamer might not be the best place for Doctor Who. The platform already has blockbuster franchises like Star Wars, MCU,...

There are dozens of excellent science fiction books and series out there, many of which are considered classics and remain in circulation even decades after their original publication.

Dick, there are tons of other lesser-known writers whose works have gone tragically overlooked. The Steven Spielberg Sci-Fi Hit That Beats James Cameron’s Avatar On Rotten Tomatoes — And Where To Stream It Now
Image
Steven Spielberg’s Sci-Fi Thriller Beats Avatar On Rotten Tomatoes ( Photo Credit – Prime Video )

Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the most prolific and acclaimed filmmakers in cinematic history. From iconic blockbusters such as E.T., the Indiana Jones series, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List, to modern masterpieces like West Side Story and The Fabelmans, the 78-year-old filmmaker has built an unparalleled legacy. Likewise, James Cameron is another visionary director known for cult classics like The Terminator films, Aliens, and Titanic. But his most ambitious project to date is the Avatar franchise, a visually stunning epic sci-fi blockbuster.

James Cameron has a long-standing interest in the sci-fi genre, but Spielberg has made his mark there as well. In fact, one of Spielberg’s early 2000s sci-fi thrillers holds a higher critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes than even Avatar. We’re talking about the 2002 film Minority Report starring...

Not Terminator Or Predator — This Cult Sci-Fi Classic Could Be Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Big Screen Comeback
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Big Screen Comeback ( Photo Credit – Flickr )

The second season of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s spy action-comedy series Fubar premiered earlier this month on Netflix. Although many fans were excited to watch the Terminator star on the small screen, the show didn’t find favor with several critics. Overall, it has a modest 48% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score. His last theatrical release was Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), which unfortunately underperformed at the box office, falling short of expectations.

The Film That Could Be Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Big Screen Comeback

It looks like the iconic action hero is still searching for the perfect project that can be his true big-screen comeback. And we might just have the perfect idea. No, it’s not another Terminator or Predator sequel (we’ve had plenty of those). What we’d really love is to see the legendary bodybuilder-turned-actor reunite with Oscar-nominated director Paul Verhoeven for...

Tom Cruise's Dystopian Thriller Noir 'Minority Report' Arrives on Streaming
Image
One of Steven Spielberg's most underrated movies is Minority Report, the action thriller starring Tom Cruise. More than 20 years after its original release, the dystopian sci-fi film has found a new streaming home, and fans of the genre will be able to stream one of Cruise's best films without paying anything. Starting July 1, the film will be on Tubi, and to stream the movie, viewers will just have to stick around for the occasional ad breaks.

The futuristic sci-fi film is based on Philip K. Dick's story The Minority Report. It follows Cruise as the chief of a new police unit known as Precrime. Using advanced technology and the psychic ability of three "precogs," Chief John Anderton is able to foresee crimes. When he observes the crimes before they're committed, Anderton and his partners stop the perpetrators and serve justice. During an evaluation by the Department of Justice,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Twisty 82% Rotten Tomatoes Sci-Fi Thriller Is Streaming For Free Next Month
Image
If you want to see Arnold Schwarzenegger get his ass to Mars, you'd better get your ass to Pluto. Pluto TV, the free, ad-supported streaming service, is streaming the mind-bending 1990 science fiction classic Total Recall starting on July 1. Total Recall was adapted from the 1966 Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," and lingered in development Hell for over fifteen years. It went through forty script drafts before it was finally brought to the big screen by RoboCop director Paul Verhoeven, who brought his trademark black humor and satirical flourishes to the film.

Boasting eye-popping special effects and some of the most hyper-violent action of Schwarzenegger's career, Total Recall was one of the most expensive movies ever made at the time, with a budget of $48–80 million Usd; however, it didn't hold that record for long, as the $94 million Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which also starred Schwarzenegger,...

Freejack (1992) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Movie?
Image
Freejack is a 1992 science fiction action flick in which a Formula One driver explodes into a gigantic Nissan advertisement in a gnarly mid-air collision, only to have his body stolen just before impact by a time-traveling Mick Jagger. All this in a film that once had the mind of a 1959 thinking-man’s pontification on the soul, that now has the body of an Arnold Schwarzenegger brouhaha. Only it stars Emilio Estevez. That’s right. The Mighty Duck man, I swear to God! If that’s not enough weirdness to satiate you, this story also involves a classic Spielberg/Hooper “who actually directed this” mystery, actresses replaced mid-shoot because they don’t make the producers feel all funny deep down inside, and even Sir Anthony Hopkins talking a little sh*t. This is What Happened to Freejack.

The story of Freejack starts back in 1959 with the release of Robert Sheckley’s science fiction novel Immortality,...

A Forgotten Ben Affleck Sci-Fi Movie Is Now Trending On Netflix 22 Years After Release
Image
Ben Affleck made a sci-fi movie in 2003 that has since been forgotten, but 22 years later, the rarely-seen film is a streaming hit on Netflix. Even as his two-decades-old science fiction effort finds a new audience on the world’s biggest streamer, the Oscar-winning actor, producer and writer is enjoying the success of his latest release, The Accountant 2, which grossed $101 million worldwide in its theatrical run, and is sure to be even more of a hit on streaming.

It is no surprise at all to see Affleck headlining a thriller like The Accountant 2, after his efforts with films like the first Accountant, The Town, Argo, Triple Frontier and others. Science fiction films like the one he made back in 2003 are less frequently found in his filmography, and if sci-fi leaning comic book movies like Justice League are tossed out, the genre is even more poorly represented there.

Affleck’s...

Why Netflix Canceled Altered Carbon
Image
There has always been more to cyberpunk than the core premise of being more than human. It might also be tempting to boil down the genre to mere aesthetics: futuristic, neon-drenched metropolises, cutting-edge technology, and a society simultaneously on the brink of progress and ruin. However, cyberpunk narratives routinely critique the oversaturation of capitalist ideology while highlighting mankind's fraught relationship with technological progress. These stories are also overtly political, where shadowy organizations and corrupt megacorporations hold a corrosive monopoly over people's lives, going as far as digitizing consciousness in the name of progress.

Although all of these genre traits find a way to compound in Richard K. Morgan's 2002 novel "Altered Carbon," humanity emerges as the most intriguing aspect of such a dystopian world. Just when you think you've seen it all before, "Altered Carbon" jolts you awake with the ingenuity and cynicism necessary for cyberpunk to thrive as a genre.

If you’re a fan of Black Mirror, you might be wondering what could fill the void of the sci-fi viewing lineup since the end of season 7. While Black Mirror has become the go-to for dark, tech-driven cautionary tales, there’s another anthology series that deserves fans’ attention but has not quite gotten its due.

With Bryan Cranston both starring and producing, this show brings mind-bending stories of one of the greatest sci-fi authors, Philip K. Dick. While it shares Black Mirror‘s focus on technology’s impact on society, this show offers a bit more hope and humanity. And the series is Electric Dreams, a perfect alternative for sci-fi fans.

Tom Cruise Faced Off Against Lilo & Stitch At The Box Office Once Before
Image
This past Memorial Day weekend was one for the record books as Disney's live-action "Lilo & Stitch" went up against Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning" at the box office. Overall, the films helped collectively set a new record for the holiday, though it was "Lilo & Stitch" that won the day with a global box office take exceeding $300 million in a single weekend. Amazingly enough, though, this isn't the first time that Cruise battled the duo that is Lilo and Stitch at the box office, with the first match-up having shaken out quite differently.

In the summer of 2002, Cruise was heading up Steven Spielberg's sci-fi film "Minority Report," an adaptation of author Philip K. Dick's "The Minority Report." It was one of the most-anticipated movies of the summer and had a prime June release date on the calendar. Disney, meanwhile, had a new original...

Timebomb | In 1991, Michael Biehn got his own Jason Bourne thriller
Image
The Terminator’s Michael Biehn took the lead in 1991’s Timebomb – a B-thriller that shows what a charismatic, intense actor he can be.

The very same year his cameo as Kyle Reese was trimmed out of Terminator 2: Judgment Day’s theatrical cut, Michael Biehn finally got a deserved leading role – albeit in one of the weirder films in his long career. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime, 1991’s Timebomb isn’t a lost classic, but it absolutely is a reminder of what a terrific actor Biehn was in his 1980s and 90s prime. In a more just Hollywood, he would have been an out-and-out movie star.

Biehn plays Eddy Kay, a quiet watch repairer who’s so nice that it almost seems a bit odd that he’s single. Instead, he lives in a crummy single-room apartment with nothing in it other than a distractingly comprehensive selection of jigsaw puzzles.

This Isn’t the First Time Tom Cruise Has Battled ‘Lilo & Stitch’ at the Box Office
Image
This weekend, Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” returns to theaters in live-action/CGI form and is expected to lead the Memorial Day box office to a potential new record. But its release alongside Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” also makes it a box office rematch 23 years in the making:

Stitch vs. Tom Cruise.

Back on June 21, 2002, Disney’s original animated “Lilo & Stitch” was released in theaters alongside one of Cruise’s most acclaimed action films outside the “Mission: Impossible” series: “Minority Report.” Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novella, the cyberpunk classic stars Cruise as John Anderton, the head of a police unit known as Precrime, which interprets abstract visions from powerful psychics of future crimes and tries to stop them before they happen.

“Minority Report” and “Lilo & Stitch” hit theaters during an extremely competitive summer, one filled with titles whose IP,...

Image
Another season of “Love, Death + Robots” has come and gone, and the hunt for more fun and interesting sci-fi stories begins again.

Both the fun and beauty of a series like “Love, Death + Robots” is that each season is so easily digestible, but that often means the show is over in a sitting or two. Luckily, there are plenty of other anthology series that have cropped up trying to emulate the Netflix original, or doing something similar in a live-action setting.

Here are seven shows to check out and binge once you finish the latest season of “Love, Death + Robots.”

This Harrison Ford 89% Certified-Fresh Sci-Fi Classic Gets New 4K Steelbook
Image
Few sci-fi films have a grip on pop culture quite like Ridley Scott’sBlade Runner. The 1982 adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s iconic novel Do You Dream of Electric Sheep? starring Harrison Ford(Indiana Jones) defined the genre in the '80s. Over the last 40 plus years, its fanbase and legacy have only grown. This was with the help of the 2017 sequel being one of the best films of the last decade. Now, before the world expands in its next iteration on the small screen, the original Blade Runner is getting a new futuristic 4K edition.

The latest 4K steelbook will include “The Final Cut” of Blade Runner, which saw extended scenes added to the theatrical release. This is seen by Scott and many fans as the definitive version of the film. This edition will presumably feature all the same special features as past 4K releases of the film and...

Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning Isn’t Tom Cruise’s First Box Office Clash With Lilo & Stitch–Here’s Who Won Their 2002 Face-Off!
Image
Do You Know Who Won The Tom Cruise Vs Lilo & Stitch Box Office Battle In 2002? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Tom Cruise and Disney are bringing their own Barbenheimer this May with Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning and Lilo and Stitch. Their goal is just as ambitious, given that they not only have to “save” cinema yet again, thanks to a subpar year for Hollywood, but also squash the notion that audiences might be a tiny bit annoyed by sequels and remakes.

While Paramount Pictures and Disney are crossing fingers that the box office receipts of the eighth Mission: Impossible film and the latest live-action remake of another animated classic do not devour each other, the startling truth is that such wishful thinking is futile. What’s more, the evidence is not even lying further than, well, Lilo and Stitch and Tom Cruise themselves.

As it turns out, back in 2002, the original Lilo...

Explosions, Aliens and Dyer’s Fists Lead Legend’s May Madness
Image
Legend has unveiled its packed May 2025 premiere schedule, delivering an ambitious run of science fiction, fantasy, and action classics that stretch across time, space, and genres.

At the top of the pile is James Cameron’s rarely broadcast deep-sea thriller The Abyss, which makes a rare UK television appearance on Sunday 25 May at 9pm. This underwater epic about alien intelligence, nuclear paranoia, and human resilience remains one of Cameron’s most visually arresting and emotionally charged films.

But for those who prefer their sci-fi terrain a little more subterranean than subaquatic, Legend has curated a trio of matinee premieres that mine classic adventure with gusto. Kicking off with Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) on 5 May, followed by Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) and disaster milestone The Poseidon Adventure (1972), the channel dives deep into cult cinematic archaeology.

One is a chaotic pint-sized fugitive who’s too fast to catch, the other is an alien hiding out on Earth. We’ll let you make your own jokes with that one.

Crucially though, Tom Cruise and this particular Disney character have already opened against each other in cinemas once before. And it’ll happen again on 23rd May 2025, when Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake both have their first frame in US cinemas. Deadline reports that both films are tracking for $100 million-plus openings over the Memorial Day weekend.

Back in June 2002, one of the biggest box-office news stories of the year was that Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, the animated original, and Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report,...

Total Recall (1990) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
We’ve recently looked at the of Michael Crichton’s best works and it got me thinking about some of the other heavy hitting sci-fi writers. One of the best who also happens to have quite a few adaptations to his name is Philip K. Dick. If you aren’t a big reader, then the titles We Can Remember It For You Wholesale and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep may not ring a bell, but I’m sure that Total Recall and Blade Runner are right up this audience’s alley. You guys seemed to really enjoy the breakdowns on Jurassic Park, Congo, and Sphere so lets take a look at one of the biggest action movies of 1990 and its source material and unpack Total Recall. No, not the remake. Never the remake for that one. Pull that tracker out of your nostril as we find out what happened to this adaptation.

Murderbot Trailer Reveals Apple TV+'s New Sci-Fi Series With Alexander Skarsgård
Image
There is nothing quite like a sci-fi comedy. In March, we were treated to a brilliant new film in the genre through the form of Bong Joon Ho's "Mickey 17," which was an adaptation of Edward Nashton's novel, "Mickey7." Although the film flopped at the box office, some have hailed the film as a worthwhile futuristic satire with arguably Robert Pattinson's best performance to date. Now, for those looking for laughs from outer space in the comfort of their home, Apple TV+ is bringing us more astronomical hilarity with their brand new series, "Murderbot," and this first official trailer gives us a glimpse at what space oddities are in store for viewers.

Based on Martha Wells' best-selling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series, "The Murderbot Diaries," this new show was created by Academy Award-nominees Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, and stars Emmy Award-winner Alexander Skarsgård in the titular role.

Ben Affleck’s 10 Most Underrated Roles, Ranked
Image
Ben Affleck has had a rollercoaster of a Hollywood career packed with blockbuster hits, critical darlings, and a fair share of underappreciated gems. While he’s best known for films like Good Will Hunting and Argo, there are quite a few performances that didn’t get the recognition they truly deserved. Despite the ups and downs, Affleck has proven time and again that he’s more than just a heartthrob or a tabloid favorite—he’s a powerhouse talent with impressive versatility.

Starting as one of the breakout stars of the ‘90s, Affleck made waves with his Oscar-winning screenplay for the film Good Will Hunting. It was co-written with his longtime friend Matt Damon, who himself is a legendary actor.

He dabbled in everything—rom-coms, action thrillers, and even suited up as Daredevil and Batman. But after a few missteps,...

10 Years Ago, Amazon Hit Its Absolute Prime With a WW2 Alternate History Drama That Forced Netflix to Level Up
Image
While Netflix had been a pioneer in the streaming space, coming in with shows like House of Cards, Ozark, Stranger Things, and Orange is the New Black, there was a time when the streaming giant faced tough competition in the arena that it had created. One show, specifically waiting on Prime Video, really gave the platform a run for its money.

Man in the High Castle || Credit: Prime Video

Man in The High Castle was based on a novel by the seminal Philip K Dick, which explored an alternate world where Nazis won the Second World War, dividing up the continental United States between themselves and the Japanese. The show had such brilliant storytelling, whether it was music or dialogue, that it practically changed the streaming landscape, forcing all competitors to up their game.

Man in The High Castle did some great character work with its premise Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa in...

22 Years Before The Penguin, Colin Farrell’s Breakthrough Role Came Alongside Tom Cruise in This Cyberpunk Action Flick
Image
There's simply no performer quite like Colin Farrell's. Upon first look, he's a dashing lead capable of headlining epic blockbusters. However, beneath Farell's chiseled exterior lies a deeply idiosyncratic character actor willing to lose himself in any role. It's impossible to imagine cult classics like In Bruges or The Lobster without his unique screen presence. The Penguin has earned Farell the best reviews of his career, with some drawing comparisons to James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano. His range is unparalleled, yet he spent the early 2000s struggling to make an impact on the big screen. Thankfully, Stephen Spielberg was willing to take a risk and gave the actor his breakthrough with a deeply unconventional cyberpunk thriller.

Released in 2002, Minority Report thrusts viewers into a dystopian world teetering on the edge of fascism. Pre-Crime, an experimental program utilized to predict potential murders before they take place, has transformed Washington into a surveillance state.

The 64 Best Animated Movies of the 21st Century, from ‘Flow’ to ‘The Boy and the Heron’
Image
“One more time: animation is a medium, not a genre. Animation is film,” Guillermo del Toro said last year. IndieWire couldn’t agree more, and yet animation — an art form that requires the most precise control of the cinematic medium — is continually disrespected.

Infamously, 2022’s Best Animated Oscars presentation featured several jokes about the nominees that, in the words of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, framed “the five Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature as a corporate product for kids that parents must begrudgingly endure.” The directing duo called upon the Academy to do better by animation. And this year’s ceremony largely delivered, with less jokes that belittled animation as kiddy stuff and a sterling speech from del Toro himself for his acclaimed stop-motion feature adaptation of “Pinocchio.”

Pixar and Studio Ghibli tend to spring to mind first when discussing great animation, but there’s a world beyond those two giants.

11 Best Shows Like ‘The Twilight Zone’ To Watch If You Love the Series
Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The Twilight Zone is one of the most brilliant and trippy series ever made. Created by Rod Serling, the CBS series is a virtual and psychologically thrilling trip into the unknown. The Twilight Zone premiered over six decades ago, and it still holds up very well as far as the stories and the visual experience go. Maybe that’s why the Jordan Peele reboot failed: it couldn’t capture the same magic as the Serling series did. So, if you loved the trippy stories, inventive settings, and compelling characters in The Twilight Zone, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

‘Tracker’ Creator Ben H. Winters Tackles Comics with Sci-Fi Mystery ‘Benjamin’ (Exclusive)
Image
In high school, Ben H. Winters went to see Total Recall, a loud Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action blockbuster directed by Paul Verhoeven. When he noticed it was based on a story by Philip K. Dick, he decided to seek it out and read it.

His reaction was one of “Whoa,” as he recalls. “So that’s where this stuff is coming from,” he thought. It became his gateway into classic and heady science fiction from not just Dick but authors such as Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlin, Kurt Vonnegut and others.

“The guys were preoccupied with the idea what it meant being humans, what is meant to be alive,” he notes. “All of these trippy and deep and unsettling questions of the human condition become folded into these wild stories.”

Now Winters is paying homage to these authors with Benjamin, a three-issue prestige limited comic book series from Oni Press,...

‘The Assessment’ Review: Alicia Vikander’s Latest Resonant Trip to the Uncanny Valley
Image
Fleur Fortuné’s near-future-set feature-length directorial debut, The Assessment, prods at current-day anxieties around having children amid a recrudescence of fascism and dress rehearsals for the climate apocalypse. Even as these two forces refuse to recognize each other’s authority, they skip into the future hand in hand.

Owing to their wealth and obedience, Mia (Elizabeth Olsen) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel) live in a coastal modernist villa, insulated from the largely off-screen ravages of a dystopian climate apocalypse by an atmosphere-controlled forcefield. Mia cultivates gourmet algae in a greenhouse of her own design, where she also keeps an orchid that’s all she has left of her mother, who was exiled to the “Old World” for political dissidence. Aaryan is a programmer who, in a nod to Philip K. Dick, designs artificial pets to replace those lost in the “pet cull.”

Mia and Aaryan decide that what’s missing in their life is a kid,...

Philip K. Dick's 1950 Sci-Fi Novel Getting An Adaptation From Humans Creators
Image
Philip K. Dick’s novella The Variable Man gets an adaptation from Humans co-creators Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent. The author, also behind Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and The Man in the High Castle, has been widely regarded for his prominent impact on the sci-fi genre. Originally released in 1953, The Variable Man focuses on Thomas Cole, who is transported to the future amid a war between Terra and Centaurus.

According to Deadline, Brackley and Vincent are now adapting The Variable Man. Motive Pictures, the British company from Simon Maxwell, is collaborating with Electric Shepherd and the adaptation will air in the UK. However, Maxwell explains that having Brackley and Vincent on board and “exploring the modern world through a genre lens” can help garner a wide release in the United States. He adds that creating shows with strong talent can build “excitement to attract the commissions and co-finance...

Image
Philip K. Dick‘s ever-prescient science fiction writing have been adapted into such works as Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, and “The Man in the High Castle.”

The Variable Man will soon join that list, as Deadline reports that Motive Pictures is developing a grounded sci-fi series based on the novella.

The book is set in a distant future where humanity is locked in a protracted conflict with the reptilian alien species known as the Sirians. To gain an edge in the war, the military employs a team of scientists to develop a device capable of predicting future events with precision.

However, when a “variable man” named Thomas Cole accidentally arrives from the past, he disrupts the scientists’ plans. Cole’s presence introduces an element...

Liam Neeson And Owen Wilson's Supernatural Horror Movie Is A Late '90s Visual Delight
Image
Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" draws us into its gothic, macabre world even before we set our sights on the titular mansion. When we finally see the scary residence, Jackson's haunting prose etches the picture of a house that observes and reacts to human presence, being every bit sentient as its inhabitants. The true horror, however, lies in the unspoken fears evoked by such a horrible, surreal place. When the mansion brings out the worst anxieties in our protagonist, Eleanor Vance, it's hard not to slip into her shoes and absorb some of her fears.

As the key to capturing the heart of Jackson's chilling tale is to explore these subtleties, few adaptations have managed to reinvent the book's premise on its own terms. The most effective and notable effort (so far) is Mike Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House," which uses Jackson's haunted house...

Robert Pattinson is dead. Robert Pattinson is reborn. He hath risen! Rinse, repeat.

Like a Looney Tunes cartoon penned by Philip K. Dick, Mickey 17 — filmmaker Bong Joon Ho’s long-awaited follow-up to his 2019 masterpiece Parasite — takes a technological breakthrough and runs its human lab rat of a hero through a gauntlet of future-shocked banality and brutality. Netflix Adds the Final Cut of 'Blade Runner'
Image
Many directors' films end up with multiple versions as a result of studio intervention, international re-cuts, or re-released director's cuts. Ridley Scott is certainly one of those filmmakers, having created different director's cuts for 10 movies throughout his career — Robin Hood, Alien, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, The Martian, Gladiator, The Counselor, Legend, Kingdom of Heaven, and, perhaps most controversially, his sci-fi masterpiece, 1982's Blade Runner. The 1992 re-edit of the film is, despite some controversy, widely considered to be one of the greatest director's cuts of all time, eliminating certain things and inserting others (the unicorn dream) in order to create more metaphysical mystery and ambiguity. But that wasn't the only director's cut of Blade Runner.

In 2007, for the 25th anniversary of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott released what is known as 'The Final Cut' of the film, which is now streaming on Netflix beginning today (you can watch it...

Disney Cancelled An Animated Adaptation From The Creator Of Blade Runner — Twice
Image
The Philip K. Dick story "The King of the Elves" was first published in an issue of Beyond Fantasy Fiction, way back in September of 1953. The story involves a lonely, borderline-impoverished Colorado gas station owner named Shadrach who, while enjoying the solitude one night, notices that some elves are standing outside (!). He invites them in and gives them food and shelter, learning that one of the elves is their King. When the King dies in bed, however, the other elves — in exchange for Shadrach's kindness — nominate the old man to be their new monarch. He is told that he must come up with new strategies to help them in a long-fought war with a kingdom of Trolls.

Much of the story is a push-and-pull between Shadrach's modest, rural lifestyle in Colorado and the allure of being the King of a nation of fantasy creatures. When he tells the other Colorado...

Keanu Reeves is one of the most extraordinary movie stars of the past several decades, as he has managed to earn both legitimate praise and ironic appreciation. Although he began appearing in heartthrob roles just as the “Brat Pack” era began its decline, Reeves would become one of the definitive action stars of his generation alongside Tom Cruise and Wesley Snipes. In between his major sequels, Reeves still found a way to take on ambitious projects from acclaimed filmmakers, such as Taylor Hackford’s unusual legal thriller “The Devil’s Advocate” and Nancy Meyers’ charming romantic-comedy “Something’s Gotta Give.”

Despite facing a brief recess in his career after a series of critical disappointments in the first half of the 21st century, Reeves launched a major comeback when the “John Wick” franchise gave him another opportunity to show his merits as an action star. Reeves is clearly passionate about both the character...

‘Captain America: Brave New World’: Composer Laura Karpman Used a Choir to Deliver Red Hulk’s ‘Big-Ass Monster Music’
Image
For “Captain America: Brave New World,” director Julius Onah wanted his entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be rooted in the world of a political thriller.

Films like “The Day of the Jackal,” “Le Samouraï” and even “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” were among some of his inspirations. Composer Laura Karpman, who is no stranger to the MCU, having scored “The Marvels” and “What If?,” drew from experience. “There was a cue from ‘Ms. Marvel’ which goes over the train sequence, it starts and continues, and I thought ‘I want to do that, ‘I want to write a piece of music that starts the steamrolling and keeps it going,’” she says.

Karpman called on New Orleans drummers. “I put them in a room with no music, just rhythm, and one of the rhythms wound up being the conspiracy music. That whole thing is this combination of this New...
