Jess Glynne Criticizes White House for Using Viral Jet2 Holiday Sound in Deportation Meme: “Makes Me Sick”
Image
Jess Glynne, the British singer behind the “Hold My Hand” song used in the viral Jet2 holiday meme sound, is responding to the White House’s use of the audio to poke fun at ongoing mass deportations in the U.S.

On Tuesday, the White House’s official X account shared a video that seemingly showcases immigrants being deported from the United States. The popular Jet2 holiday meme is typically used to parody something unfortunate happening, and it was used on the White House’s video with a caption that mirrored that of the voiceover from the meme.

“When Ice books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation, the White House wrote on X. “Nothing beats it!”

The “Rather Be” singer reacted to the social post on Wednesday, disapproving of the administration’s use of her song that she says was intended to spread positivity.

“This honestly makes me sick,...

‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’: Aisha Tyler Dishes on Drew Carey & Jimmy Kimmel Snafu
Image
Aisha Tyler and Drew Carey brought the laughs on the season premiere of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? But did they win $1 million for their chosen charities? Host Jimmy Kimmel shared that he didn’t know they were pals, and Carey revealed they had the same manager for a while, and they both hosted Whose Line Is It Anyway? Tyler said that they are like “brother and sister from another mother.” The pair seemed to be in good hands as Carey had been on Millionaire before and won $500,000. The comedians flew through the first few questions, but once they got to the $32,000 question, they got tripped up. The question was “With a whopping 11, which of these singers has more number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 than the other three combined?” The choices were Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Tina Turner, or Britney Spears. Carey and Tyler both deliberated for several...

James Cameron and Billie Eilish are teaming up for a surprising collaboration
Image
During her recent four-night run of concerts in Manchester, Billie Eilish made a surprise announcement on stage about a new cinematic collaboration she’s working on.

“So, you may have noticed there are more cameras than usual up here,” Eilish said, per Deadline. “Basically, I can’t say much about it, but what I can say is I’m working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron, and it’s going to be in 3D. So, take that as you will, and these four shows here in Manchester, you and me, are part of a thing that I’m making with James.”

The nine-time Grammy winner went on to elaborate that Cameron, the multi-Academy Award-winning filmmaker behind films such as The Terminator, Titanic, and Avatar, was “in this audience somewhere,” and that the 3D project would serve to commemorate this era of her career in visceral fashion.

Alan Bergman Dies: Co-Lyricist With Wife Marilyn Of “The Way Were Were”, Many Film & TV Themes Was 99
Image

Snubbed by Oscars, redeemed by Emmys: How eligibility rules revived ‘Super/Man,’ ‘I Am: Celine Dion,’ and ‘Will & Harper’
Image
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, I Am: Celine Dion, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, and Will & Harper share something in common: all four documentaries were snubbed at the 2025 Oscars but have now earned nominations at the 77th Emmys.

It's an unusual rule that makes this possible. Even after launching a full Oscar campaign — as these documentaries did — they can still compete at the Emmys if they fail to secure an Oscar nomination. The rule is a bit murky, though, as simply earning an Oscar nomination (in any category) makes a film ineligible for the Emmys. While this has become a common practice, there’s still confusion about how documentaries are submitted for the Emmys, which categories they qualify for, and why some films can compete at both the Oscars and Emmys while others cannot.

Adding to the complexity is the fact that documentaries that campaign for an Emmy first...

Image
Audiences at the Annecy Animation Festival got a first look at the upcoming CG-animated film “High in the Clouds,” based on Paul McCartney’s book of the same name that features the voices of McCartney, Ringo Starr, Lionel Richie, Céline Dion and more.

Director Toby Genkel and project supervisor Christian De Vita joined Gaumont’s president of global animation, Terry Kalagian, to talk about the arduous eight-year process of bringing the story to the screen as well as collaborating with McCartney on the film. “It shouldn’t be about me,” Genkel recalls McCartney saying early on. “Yeah, Ok, my name is all over the poster, but you get the point.”

The film, set to be released sometime in 2027, reimagines McCartney’s 2005 book as a story of a young squirrel named Wirral (voiced by Himesh Patel) who embarks on a journey to bring back his mother’s voice after it was...

‘I Am: Celine Dion’ will now compete for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking at Emmys — so what’s the difference?
Image
Prime Video's documentary I Am: Celine Dion, which chronicles the iconic pop singer's battle with Stiff Person Syndrome, has been accepted to compete in the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking category at the 2025 Emmys, Gold Derby has confirmed.

This juried award, presented at the Creative Arts Emmys since 2005, honors documentaries that "showcase an exceptional filmmaker's vision, compelling storytelling, artistic innovation, and the ability to inform, transport, impact, enlighten, and create a meaningful, indelible work that elevates the art of documentary filmmaking." Notably, films selected for this category are not eligible to compete in Best Informational Series or Special or Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

What's the difference between Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking and Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special?

According to the 2025 Emmys rulebook, documentaries with an aggregate theatrical release exceeding 70 days must enter the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking category. They are ineligible for competition in the Documentary or...

Are Music and Other Celebrity Films Killing the Documentary?
Image
Glance at the list of top contenders for the nonfiction special this Emmy season and you’ll find some big musical talent: Bruce Springsteen. Celine Dion. John Williams. The Beatles.

Yet far from a thrilling foray into the modern canon, these Rock and Roll Hall of Fame excursions suggest a world in which nonfiction TV has become an exercise in brand management, say documentary leaders, marginalizing robust storytelling and journalism.

The Emmys documentary special once covered a wide range of social topics. Beginning some 25 years ago, it included the stories of Vietnam POWs and prison cover-ups, child beauty-pageant contestants and racial inequities. But in recent years this has morphed. In 2024, four of the five nominees were authorized celebrity biographies. The year before? The same.

Don’t count on much changing this season: Artist-friendly music docs flood the space.

“A lot of this is the shift to streaming where companies are...

JJ Of Austria Crowned Eurovision 2025 Winner
Image
JJ of Austria has been crowned the winner of the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Basel, Switzerland’s St. Jakobshalle arena.

Tearing up upon the acceptance of the distinction, JJ clinched the coveted spot with his haunting, falsetto-infused rendition of “Wasted Love,” which he reprised upon his win. Throughout national jury voting (which makes up 50% of the vote), Switzerland and Austria flip-flopped for the lead, with the latter taking over at its conclusion. Predicted favorites for the win included Sweden, Finland and France. Unexpectedly, however, Israel shot up to the lead with a whopping 297 viewer votes, putting it in a last-minute tight race with Austria (which won by 79 points), especially as Switzerland received a surprising zero points.

Cannes Review: Leave One Day is a Nostalgia-Laced Musical That Plays It Safe
Image
Frequent festival-goers learn not to expect much from opening films. Quality is but one of many factors that lead to the selection for this symbolic slot. In order to avoid offending sensibilities and setting a controversial tone for the whole festival from the get-go, programmers tend to pick something less adventurous or challenging for their curtain-raiser. Even with reasonably lowered expectations,, French director Amélie Bonnin’s comic-dramatic musical Leave One Day, which opened the 78th Cannes Film Festival, is an underwhelming experience. There’s no question that this sweet, nostalgia-laced ode to life in the countryside has its heart in the right place, but a lack of nuance and creative risk-taking greatly hampered the delivery of its message.

Expanded from Bonnin’s 25-minute, César-winning short of the same name, the film centers around Cécile (Juliette Armanet), who has left her country home for Paris some time ago to pursue a career as a chef.

‘Leave One Day’ Review: Cannes Opener Is a Slight but Winning Musical That Croons French Nostalgia
Image
Chalk it up to Cannes’ unique position that you’re reading this review.

Which isn’t to say that Amélie Bonnin’s locally flavored jukebox musical “Leave One Day” is anything close to a wash — nor does this year’s Cannes opening film dishonor the (at best) checkered legacy of recent predecessors such as Michel Hazanavicius’ “Final Cut,” Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” and the botched Johnny Depp comeback “Jeanne du Barry.” Hell, by way of pleasure and ambition, this slight-but-winsome dramedy offers a step-up from recent vintages; by way of international resonance, however, this latest opener seems unlikely for a world tour.

Taking a sturdy, mainstream premise — a big-city careerist reflecting on her life path during a trip back to the holler, in a setup that faintly echoes “Sweet Home Alabama,” among a hundred other rom-coms — and shading it with moral grays, natural light, and a more unvarnished turn from a well-known star,...

5 Embarrassing First Songs from Famous Divas
Image
If you look at the biographies of the most famous singers of all-time, you’ll sometimes see that the world immediately recognized their talent. Take Mariah Carey. The very first demo tape she recorded led to a bidding war between rival studios. Columbia Records went all-out when promoting her, and her debut album went platinum nine times over. Her first single, “Vision of Love,” was one of the biggest songs of 1990 and indeed was one of the biggest of the entire 1990s.

With other artists? Their first song is one that you’ve never heard before and which, perhaps, they’d rather you’d never hear at all.

5 ‘Ringo I Love You’ by Cher

Cher really was born with the name “Cher” — or “Cheryl Sarkisian,” which is close enough. For her very first single, however, she went by the name of Bonnie Jo Mason, which was the sort of wholesome...

Paul McCartney's upcoming animated film adds big Star Trek names to its talent roster
Image
Many Star Trek fans know that Beatles legend Paul McCartney and Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry almost joined forces in the early 1970s for a proposed sci-fi musical project based on a concept by McCartney. It never came to fruition, and any material devoted to it -- such as outlines or script drafts -- has gotten lost in the sands of time. There exists, however, a cool photograph of Roddenberry and McCartney together, smiling as they talked. The 366 Project at the Roddenberry Vault shared the photo publicly in 2016.

Now, fans are set to get an enterprise that will bring together McCartney and members of the Star Trek universe. The production company Gaumont will transform McCartney’s 2005 children’s book, High in the Clouds, on which he collaborated with illustrator Geoff Dunbar and co-writer Philip Ardagh, to the big screen as a 3D animated feature. The film has been in development for more than a decade,...

10 Worst Cameos In DC Movies & TV Shows
Image
Like love and marriage, comic book movies and cameos are an institute you cannot disparage. Marvel might be the trailblazer in this regard, finding unique and innovative ways to shoehorn everyone and their uncle into a movie or TV show, but DC isn't immune from turning its audience into a real-life Pointing Rick Dalton meme. Yet, for every great appearance, there's also a flubber -- a moment that flops harder than "Joker: Folie à Deux" did at the box office.

Take a look at 2023's "The Flash" as an example. With all its multiversal potential, minds raced to the infinite possibilities, imagining the chances of seeing Christian Bale's Batman return for a triumphant third act cameo or even seeing Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern fly in for a visit. Instead, it turned into a CGI horrorfest where the tributes to past heroes angered -- rather than captivated -- viewers. It...
