Tiffani Thiessen, once credited as Tiffani Amber Theissen, got a big break early in her career playing the role of Kelly Kapowski on the hit kid-friendly sitcom "Saved by the Bell." That series ran from 1989 to 1993, and entrenched itself deeply into the brains of the kids who watched it. Theissen was a household name for anyone under the age of 14. She continued to play Kelly in the spinoff series "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" and the TV movie "Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Vegas."
Throughout her tenure on the show, Theissen continued to work. In 1993, she appeared in the feature film "Son in Law" (her first) and landed guest spots on multiple other hit TV shows like "Burke's Law," "Married... with Children," "Step by Step," and "Blossom." In 1994, she took on another steady role, playing Valerie Malone on "Beverly Hills, 90210." Valerie first appeared in the show's fifth season,...

Throughout her long acting career, Winona Ryder has played a number of memorable roles, but it was the 1989 dark comedy Heathers that led to her losing a job.
The Oscar-nominated actress, who became popular with a younger generation through her role in Netflix’s Stranger Things, says in a new Elle UK cover story that she was told that her early-career role in Heathers, alongside Shannen Doherty and Christian Slater, would mark the end of her career.
“I was told I was never gonna work again if I did Heathers,” she says.
And while she went on to book multiple well-known movies and TV shows, Ryder admits that after Heathers, “I did lose a job.”
Ryder says she had landed a role in The Freshman, the 1990 movie with Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick, but after the filmmakers saw Heathers, she says, “they revoked the offer.”

Although Heathers (1988) has gone down as a cult classic over the past four decades, it was a career liability for star Winona Ryder after its release.
The 2x Oscar nominee recently revealed the Michael Lehmann-directed teen dark comedy cost her a role alongside Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick in the 1990 crime comedy The Freshman.
“I was told I was never gonna work again if I did Heathers. I did lose a job,” she told Elle UK, hesitating to reveal the part she lost. “Ok, Ok, I’ll tell you. You remember the movie The Freshman?”
Ryder explained, “They thought it was making fun of teen suicide. They were deeply offended and, yeah, they revoked the offer. I’m like, ‘I can’t work with Marlon Brando?’ But I had to stand my ground. I wasn’t gonna apologise.”

Amid her rise to fame in the 1980s, Winona Ryder took on one of her most memorable roles when she joined the cast of Heathers. It came with a price, however, as it meant missing out on a chance to co-star in another big movie with Marlon Brando.
Per Elle UK, Ryder reflected on the early years of her career in a new interview. She brought up 1988's Heathers, in which she starred in the lead role as Veronica Sawyer. At the time of the movie's release, she had already been cast to appear in the 1990 film The Freshman alongside Brando. However, she was fired from the project before filming after the filmmakers watched Heathers, offended by its content.

Winona Ryder recently told Elle UK that she was warned against starring in “Heathers” as a teen actor. Her team told her she would “never work again” if she signed on to play Veronica Sawyers in the 1988 dark comedy, which centers on a high school clique upended by a new student who starts murdering his classmates. Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty co-star in the cult classic.
“I did lose a job,” Ryder told the publication, noting that her team was technically right about “Heathers” potentially having a negative impact on her career. Although she was hesitant to name the project, Ryder eventually revealed she was dropped from the 1990 crime comedy “The Freshman.” It was a big deal considering Marlon Brando was the star.

As a kid, you didn’t need to have smoked marijuana or even know what it was (I plead ignorance on both counts — really, Mom!) to vibe with a flustered Theo Huxtable after his suddenly unsmiling parents found a joint in his textbook on a 1985 episode of The Cosby Show.
Such a tableau would confound today’s generation of young well-meaning miscreants, in part because they smelled pot smoke three times already just walking to the store and also, what’s a textbook?
But Theo meant everything to a whole generation of kids who saw in him the idea, as Questlove eloquently put it after Malcom-Jamal Warner’s death on Monday, of “what does it mean to be an adult without depending on your parents?”
Warner’s passing at 54 in a drowning accident hit hard. And not just his passing. For anyone considered a part of Gen X — roughly,...

Alyssa Milano shared a moving remembrance to Julian McMahon following his death, writing in a lengthy tribute post that he was “more than my TV husband” and a “dear friend” who supported her professionally and personally throughout their time on The WB’s long-running fantasy drama Charmed.
“I’m heartbroken,” she began. “Julian McMahon was magic. That smile. That laugh. That talent. That presence. He walked into a room and lit it up—not just with charisma, but with kindness. With mischief. With soulful understanding.”
Milano portrayed one of three powerful witchy Halliwell sisters alongside co-stars Holly Marie Combs and the late Shannen Doherty throughout the series’ run from 1998-2006, and in Seasons 3 through 5, her character Phoebe has a turbulent relationship with McMahon’s Cole Turner, a half-human and half-demon.
“We spent years together on Charmed—years of scenes, stories, and so many in-between moments. He made me feel safe as an actor.

For your consideration… or not.
Earlier this month, Alexis Bledel withdrew herself from Emmy consideration due to a rule change. The actress, who won Best Drama Guest Actress in 2017 for The Handmaid's Tale, made an appearance in the show's series finale, but the new rule prohibits her from competing in guest for the same show because of her prior 2018 nomination in supporting. Instead of submitting in supporting, Bledel took herself out entirely. And she's far from the first star to do so.
Here are seven other times actors voluntarily bowed out of the Emmy race.

Larroquette dominated Best Comedy Supporting Actor in the '80s, winning the category four years in a row from 1985 to 1988 for his turn as Dan Fielding. And then he decided four was enough, withdrawing his name in 1989, three years before Night Court ended. "As we got to that fifth season, I...

Kevin Smith may be one of the biggest comic book nerds around, but when it comes to the idea of stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a director? He has a very definite view on the subject, and it isn’t to leap for joy at the idea.
Smith’s body of work has mostly been focused on low-budget movies that are, by his own description, “Kevin Smith movies” that “nobody wants to make.” For that reason, the idea of getting behind the camera to make a Marvel movie is a completely ridiculous idea, as he explained in a recent interview with Collider.

When Kevin Smith shot "Clerks" for $27,575, he'd received a small amount of film school training but was a babe in the woods when it came to the crucial aspect of directing actors. It shows in the movie, which is so stiffly performed that I've never been able to connect to it. The screenplay is undeniably hilarious and wise in the ways of the workaday convenience store world, but Smith's actors seem so oddly strangled. It's not the kind of acting you get in a poorly rehearsed community theater production where you can see the actors struggling to remember their lines; it's more like you're watching people who've been unnaturally directed. Their performances are really those of their director, not their own.
The off performances in "Clerks" and "Mallrats" began to make sense years later when I heard that Smith had a penchant for committing the cardinal sin of directing. Be it theater,...

As with every year, the Academy Awards’ In Memoriam segment left a lot of notable people out of the tribute. Look, it’s bound to happen – there’s only so much time allotted and by and large the video package has to match with the length of the music. But when a friend or co-star is dissed, you better believe they’re going to leap to the defense. Enter Tori Spelling, who can’t believe that the Oscars left off her Beverly Hills 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty.
Tori Spelling – who played Donna Martint to Shannen Doherty’s Brenda Walsh – recently spoke out against the Academy’s decision to leave out her late friend, who died last July after a long battle with cancer. While Doherty was no doubt better known for her TV work with shows like 90210 and Charmed, we can’t ignore movies like Heathers, Mallrats and some select others.

Grey's Anatomy celebrates its 20th anniversary on March 27, and a ton of faces have come through Seattle Grace's doors the past two decades, but only one series regular has taken home an Emmy: Katherine Heigl.
The erstwhile Dr. Izzie Stevens won Best Drama Supporting Actress in 2007 in a shocking upset. No one expected her to prevail — "Sh-t," Heigl said after her name was announced — not even her mother. One of Mel Gibson’s more recent movies that flew under the radar has become a surprising hit on streaming. Gibson stars alongside the late Shannen Doherty in Hot Seat, the 2022 cyber thriller following an ex-hacker who is forced to break into a high-level bank and another man who breaks into the bank to save and stop him. Despite an extremely limited theatrical run that saw the film earn less than $100,000 at the global box office, Hot Seat has become one of the more popular movies of the week on Freevee, sitting at #4 at the time of writing. Hot Seat was Mel Gibson’s first movie after Father Stu, the 2022 biopic starring Mark Wahlberg that’s streaming on both Hulu and Max.

Oscar-winner and controversial Hollywood star Mel Gibson remains popular with audiences, as the Braveheart and Lethal Weapon actor’s severely panned 2022 action thriller dominates free streaming. Gibson, who remains a polarizing figure following issues with alcohol and a series of controversies, including well-publicized antisemitic tirades, homophobic comments, and a domestic violence-related restraining order, was recently appointed a "Special Ambassador" for Hollywood by President Donald Trump. And, clearly, audiences still find Gibson a magnetic screen presence...especially when it's free.
Directed and produced by James Cullen Bressack, and starring Kevin Dillon, Shannen Doherty, and Michael Welch alongside Gibson, the action thriller Hot Seat is now #1 on free streaming platform Freevee, with audiences loving this tale of an anonymous criminal who plants a bomb under the chair of an ex-hacker, forcing him to break into several high-level banking institutions. You can check out the official synopsis for Hot Seat below.

The Academy Awards ceremony took place on Sunday night, and as with every year, the show featured an In Memoriam segment honoring some of the movie stars and creatives who've passed away since last year's show. Some keys were left out, with fans of horror legend Tony Todd disappointed not to see the actor included after his passing in November.
Per TMZ, Todd's family has since weighed in on the Candyman star's absence from the In Memoriam segment. The actor's widow, Fatima, said she was left feeling "angry" after the snub. She reportedly believes that there's a "racial element" that resulted in the omission, with the report noting that Fatima feels "people of color and women are often ignored as much as possible" with the Academy's In Memoriam tributes.

The 97th Academy Awards took place on the second of March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony celebrated some of the finest work in cinema last year – whether it was Anora‘s five wins or Adrien Brody winning Best Actor, the Oscars honored a diverse range of talent and storytelling. While fans were happy to see their favorites lift the golden trophy, others felt like many deserving candidates were snubbed this year. Either way, the Oscars 2025 was a night of celebration and utter excellence.

Five minutes and 30 seconds was the former record for the longest acceptance speech in Academy Awards history, but Sunday night, a victorious Adrien Brody surpassed even that.
While accepting his award for Best Actor at the 97th Oscars ceremony, Brody — who was accepting for his portrayal as Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth in The Brutalist — ignored the 45-second time limit, standing at the microphone for a lengthy five minutes and 40 seconds, and beating the record previously held by Mrs. Miniver’s Greer Garson. (Garson received the Best Actress trophy for her title role at the 1942 ceremony held on March 4, 1943.)

The 2025 Academy Awards ceremony went pretty much without a hitch. No one was slapped, no one received the wrong award, and no one embarrassed themselves. However, the event still managed to court controversy online thanks to the stars omitted from the event’s In Memoriam, including Michelle Trachtenberg, Bernard Hill, and Shannen Doherty.
The Academy has gone to great lengths in recent years to not only recognize the stars we see on screen and behind the camera, but also those who make it possible for movies to make it to screens. From writers and editors, to choreographers and publicists, the list of those who passed away in the last year is often a long one, but in trying to cover all the bases, the Academy often leaves themselves open to criticism for missing out some big stars from the emotional segment.

Michelle Trachtenberg tragically passed away last week.
Many of her fans and former costars are still in shock. This was so unexpected.
The 2025 Oscars have come and gone with relatively few surprises in the mix.
But this year’s In Memoriam segment of the Oscars snubbed Trachtenberg. And she was not the only conspicuous exclusion.

On Sunday, March 3, the 2025 Oscars telecast included the familiar tribute to deceased stars — and a few others from within the film industry — who have died over the past year.
The segment used the “Lacrimosa” section from Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” which is often a tasteful decision.

Oftentimes, if a celebrity dies too close to the Academy Awards, they may not make it into that year’s In Memoriam segment. And for a moment, it looked as if Gene Hackman — whose death was announced mere days before Sunday’s ceremony — wouldn’t be making the cut, as Morgan Freeman looked to be paying a special tribute to his friend and co-star. Yet, Hackman and some other notable 2025 deaths (including David Lynch) were included. But as is the case every year, there were many names left out. So who did the Academy snub this year?
Among the most notable names missing from the In Memoriam segment was one who also passed away last month: Michelle Trachtenberg, star of Harriet the Spy and Eurotrip. Along with her, horror icon Tony Todd (Candyman) was also omitted. Also failing to make the cut were Heathers’ Shannen Doherty, Clue’s Martin Mull and Olivia Hussey,...

The 2025 Academy Awards featured its annual In Memoriam segment, honoring industry figures who passed away over the last year. While the tribute recognized film legends such as David Lynch, James Earl Jones, Donald Sutherland, Maggie Smith, Roger Corman, Shelley Duvall, and Bob Newhart, many viewers quickly pointed out names missing from the televised montage.
Morgan Freeman introduced a special remembrance for two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman, who was found dead alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, last Wednesday. Quincy Jones also received his own tribute later in the show. The rest of the segment, set to Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor, displayed a montage of those the Academy selected for recognition.

The In Memoriam portion of the 2025 Oscars telecast on Sunday night paid a moving tribute to several stars and movie industry folk who have died over the last year, but there were some notable omissions that were quickly pointed out on social media.

The Oscars In Memoriam segment continues to stir upset among viewers as the 2025 ceremony snubbed stars like Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty, Tony Todd, Olivia Hussey, and more in its most recent televised presentation. But as viewers began to convey their annoyance over the snub, it must be noted that the Oscars revealed a link that would take viewers to a fuller list of tributes, which includes Trachtenberg, Doherty, and Todd. You can see the full roundup here. Among the talented performers who did make it onto the In Memoriam screen were the likes of Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones, Louis Gossett Jr., Donald Sutherland, and so many more. The presentation was oddly set to the tune of Mozart’s “Requiem,” a.k.a. “Lacrimosa.” The most notable tribute came at the top of the presentation as Morgan Freeman introduced the segment with a special remark for former costar and recently deceased Gene Hackman.

The Oscars In Memoriam tribute, set to Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” began with a tribute from Morgan Freeman to his “Unforgiven” and “Under Suspicion” co-star Gene Hackman. Hackman, who was 95, was found dead last week in his Santa Fe home along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

Another year, another blah Oscars program, complete with all the trappings, clichés, and safe musical numbers. Most of which you'll be ignoring as you scroll on your phone. About the only thing that has made the show watchable in the last three decades is backstage blunders and that one time a WWE fight broke out. We didn't know how good we had it. Back in the late '80s, the Oscar producers were aware of precisely this problem. In what was a lavish, high-concept gamble, they sought to inject new ideas into a stale format.
But they were wise to play it safe all those decades prior. At the 61st Academy Awards ceremony, the Oscar planners found out that lesson the hard way. For those wondering why the Oscars are excruciatingly dull, one watershed moment in 1989 is to blame. 36 years later, the taint remains, the event compared to a “gay...

When we talk about the most prolific television creators and writers, the same names often come up: Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, Dick Wolf, Taylor Sheridan, and more of the most popular and profitable names of the moment. But there's someone who's often left out of those conversations despite being responsible for some of the biggest, most beloved shows in pop culture history. Of course, that someone is none other than primetime soap and rom-com mastermind Darren Star!

Following the shocking news of Michelle Trachtenberg on Feb. 26, Sarah Michelle Gellar broke her silence on social media. She paid tribute to her late co-star with a sweet Buffy the Vampire Slayer quote.
On Instagram, Gellar shared a carousel of photos with her and Trachtenberg, both from the beloved fantasy series and in real life. She captioned the set, "Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you.The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live... for you." She added three broken-heart emojis, as well as a key emoji, a reference to Dawn Summers' real essence in the show. Sadly, the last photo in the post was of Gellar with Trachenberg and the late actress Shannen Doherty, who passed away in 2024.

The Oscars’ annual In Memoriam segment is a cathartic palate cleanser, a chance to take a break from all those speeches and prize festivities.
And a source of intrigue, suspense, shock and outrage.
“It’s an Oscar ritual that always has a rustle of drama beneath the surface,” says Michael Schulman, an Academy Awards expert and author of the 2023 book Oscar Wars. “No matter what happens, there will be 10 headlines about who was snubbed posthumously, and there’s nothing that can be done about it.” (Anne Heche’s friends could tell you something about that.)
That ritual has taken a tragically relevant turn this year with the unexpected deaths of actors Gene Hackman and Michelle Trachtenberg just days before the show. Trachtenberg is a question mark for the tribute while Hackman will certainly be included, but in what form has Oscars producers scrambling ahead of the big event.

Mel Gibson's position in Hollywood is precarious to say the least, but that has not stopped his 2022 action thriller Hot Seat from jumping into the Freevee Top 10 after it was added to the platform earlier this month. Directed by James Cullen Bressack and starring Gibson alongside Kevin Dillon, the film was met with harsh reviews upon release, which makes its new-found success on streaming unexpected…but at the same time completely on trend for free streaming releases.
Hot Seat is a high-stakes hostage thriller, which centers on It expert Orlando Friar (Dillon) who becomes an unwitting pawn in a dangerous cyber-heist. Forced to hack into government servers while trapped in a booby-trapped office chair rigged to explode (of course he is), Friar must race against the clock to outsmart the anonymous mastermind holding his life—and the city—hostage. Gibson appears as Wallace Reed, a bomb squad veteran determined...

Filmmaker Kevin Smith’sDogma has become a cult classic since its release in 1999, and lately there’s been buzz about a sequel to the movie that starred Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as two angels who were banished from heaven. The Dogma writer-director further fueled the fire of the Dogma 2 rumors in a recent post on Threads that featured a picture of himself in front of the church where some of the film’s scenes were shot.
His post from Feb. 11 read: “We shot Dogma here 26 years ago, at the Saints Peter and Paul Church in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh! [Alan Rickman] and [George Carlin] (and my Dad) all stood on the steps of this cinematically sacred place back then, whilst they lived. And this year, we’re gonna honor all of ‘em… when we resurrect Dogma! More info very soon, Parishioners!”
