Rebel Wilson wants to see her “Pitch Perfect” character, Fat Amy, get married in the fourth installment of the comedy franchise.

She hopes the movie will film sometime next year. “There’s a lot of us who are directors now,” she told Variety on Wednesday night at the premiere of “Bride Hard.” “There are many candidates – Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Kay Cannon, who is the original writer and Elizabeth Banks, so we’ll see. I’m about to direct another movie, so that keeps me busy until early next year. Hopefully, it’ll go into production next year.”

Women can have everything but a personality in director Simon West’s offensively bland work-life balance comedy, “Bride Hard.” Rebel Wilson stars as an American spy on the hunt for a single redeeming quality in Magenta Light Studios’ wedding party-turned-hostage negotiation. It’s been 13 years since Anna Camp broke out with Wilson in “Pitch Perfect,” and the box office success of that franchise made the actresses’ reunion in a new movie inevitable. Still, they deserve a better match than “Bride Hard.”

The problems start with Shaina Steinberg’s misguided and shallow script. A pale imitation of “Bridesmaids” (which earns its punny association with the Bruce Willis action classic even less), Wilson and Camp’s latest film sets out to answer, “Should these childhood besties stay friends?” Instead, it collapses into an ad-laden sameness that is not only deeply unfunny but recalls the infamous “Game Night” question: “How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?...

With the likes of Disney’s 2025 Lilo & Stitch and DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon remake in theaters, the task of having to tackle the current US box office is no mean feat. With that in mind, positive early responses become crucial as word-of-mouth helps to boost ticket sales. A new action-comedy movie featuring a reunion of two of the stars of Pitch Perfect franchise has been met with derision from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The trilogy of musical comedy movies, which followed the exploits of the college a cappella group the Barden Bellas, debuted in theaters between 2012 and 2019, followed by the one-season Peacock spinoff Bumper in Berlin in 2022.

Joining the ensemble cast of the Pitch Perfect movieshelped cement a number of up-and-coming stars who have since gone on to other major projects. What do you get when you combine a wedding, some mercenaries, and a world-class secret agent into a 105-minute film? If your director Simon West, you get an absolutely horrendous flick. That's according to critics over on Rotten Tomatoes, at least, who've given Bride Hard just a 10% rating, with some going so far as to call it the "worst movie of the year." Ouch!

West, of course, is the director behind such hits as Nicolas Cage's Con Air and The Expendables 2, so he definitely knows how to make a good action movie. Unfortunately, comedy just isn't his forte, as critic Andrew Parker from The Gate notes in his review that Bride Hard is "a near perfect zero of a film," adding that it's "devoid of anything approaching genuine laughs, mirth, suspense, or decent action." Ben Sherlock from Screen Rant also had harsh words for West's latest, saying:

Rebel Wilson had a bloody accident while filming her new action comedy “Bride Hard.”

In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Wilson recalled a “massive injury” she sustained during the production of her new film, which resulted from a mishap in fight scene choreography.

“In a fight scene, a gun accidentally got whacked across my face,” Wilson said. “It was just a freak accident, and my nose got split open, so I left set. It was really my last night of shooting. I was like, ‘How unlucky can I be?'”

She went on to say that the accident, which occurred during “the last fight sequence” on the shooting schedule, resulted in a “pool of blood.”

“I was freaking out,” she added. “They take an ambulance and they have to call a plastic surgeon, because if they didn’t, I would have been permanently disfigured. So we got the plastic surgeon,...

I never had high expectations for Bride Hard, but I’ll admit that my fondness for Simon West’s early work – especially the action classic Con Air (1997) and Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) – kept alive a faint hope of finding at least a shred of charm or personality here. Unfortunately, not even that thread of nostalgia was enough to save this production from being one of the most forgettable, poorly executed films of the year.

You’ve seen a pitch like this before, maybe in a game design document. It’s the “one-versus-many” setup, but dropped into the middle of a wedding comedy. Bride Hard presents an action-comedy framework built on this simple, chaotic premise.

We meet Sam, a secret agent whose professional life is a series of successful missions, but whose personal life is a mess. The film’s central tension appears when her duties as a Maid of Honor are violently upended. The wedding she’s supposed to be supporting becomes a combat zone when mercenaries crash the party.

The action unfolds on a picturesque private island estate, a stage meticulously set for a perfect ceremony. This idyllic backdrop of floral arrangements and champagne fountains is swiftly shattered by the arrival of an armed force, turning a celebration into a fight for survival.

The structure immediately asks a fundamental question about its hero.

In all likelihood, the pitch for “Bride Hard” was “‘Bridesmaids’ meets ‘Die Hard,’” as it’s a smart shorthand for an easy sell. Audiences who’ve seen both films will instantly recognize the story beats in an innovative mash-up centered on a spy who must win back her friendship with a bride while also juggling wedding festivities that go sideways when mercenaries wreak havoc. Though a bit rough in its execution, made worse by janky visual effects in the third act, the film is buoyed by the gentle comedic charms of the ensemble, sweet thematic resonance and Jackie Chan-style stuntwork. Sam (Rebel Wilson) and Betsy (Anna Camp) have been BFFs for more than 30 years — but maybe not forever, as fissures in their friendship are showing. Sam’s high-stakes job as a secret agent, working for an elite firm on classified missions, has taken priority over everything in her life.

There’s an old expression that goes, “If you can’t think of anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” I propose we update that a little. “If you can’t think of anything nice to say, you’re probably talking about ‘Bride Hard.’”

Let’s be perfectly frank, since I don’t know any other frank way to be: A lot of comedies aren’t very funny, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re terrible. A movie can be light and good-natured and get you through your afternoon even if it doesn’t have a single thigh-slapper. I don’t even think I’m a tough audience for comedies. If you make a bright and competent movie without a lot of laughs I am usually willing to hand wave the whole experience away as a harmless trifle.

But “Bride Hard” harms. It’s abrasively hard to watch.

When a movie is so dire you begin to suspect you’re in for a bad time before the title card drops, you cling to what tiny scraps of fun are to be found like shards of wood in a shipwreck.

So: Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph deserves much, much better than her minor supporting role in Bride Hard, but she’s respectably game serenading an unborn baby with “My Neck, My Back” or shamelessly flirting with a man of the cloth. Justin Hartley offers some nice bits of physical comedy as an arrogant idiot who incorrectly fancies himself a badass.

Heroine Sam (Rebel Wilson) describing her bridesmaid look as “like if Ariana Grande joined the Real Housewives” and “like the dancing girl emoji” is funny, and accurate. Her use of curling irons as impromptu nunchucks is inventive, though minus a point for the non-zinger “Oh no, your masturbating hand...

The official synopsis reads: “For badass secret agent Sam (Rebel Wilson), blending in has never been part of the mission — until she’s maid of honor at her best friend’s extravagant destination wedding. Westerns can do it all, folks. Celebrated actress Heather Graham can as well, by the way. Dating back to the days of Twin Peaks and Drugstore Cowboy, Graham has graced the screen via a vast array of projects, dabbling in virtually every film genre. That includes the Western genre, both in 2024 when MovieWeb spoke with Graham about Place of Bones, and now as the female lead in yet another Western, Gunslingers. The new film also stars Nicolas Cage and Stephen Dorff — the latter of whom plays her romantic interest of sorts.

Gunslingers lays out a complex backstory involving Graham's character Val and Dorff's gunman persona, Thomas — who has a criminal brother in the mix named Robert (Jeremy Kent Jackson). Adding fuel to the fire, Robert also has love ties to Val. So, why not have them all reunite in a bloodthirsty Kentucky town, which sets the stage for the bullet-laced events of the film?...

World sales agency 13 Films has boarded dark comedy “The Trainer,” the new film from “American History X” director Tony Kaye, and will be screening the film for buyers at the Cannes Film Market next month.

The film had its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival, and will have its North American premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June.
