There is a pecking order in Hollywood that determines which actors and directors get first crack at the hottest material in town. When agents and managers (relying on the perspicacity of their underpaid assistants and readers) come across a script that could be a launching pad for a billion-dollar franchise or an awards season thoroughbred, they fire that sucker off to their top client (even if they're not exactly right for the lead role). This is how you get Tom Cruise embarrassing himself in "Far and Away" with the worst Irish accent you'll ever hear outside of a community theater production of "The Plough and the Stars" (and even then).

Directed by Aronofsky from a screenplay by Charlie Huston, who is also the author of the book that the movie is based on, Caught Stealing has the following synopsis: Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore, but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant.

Months after Practical Magic debuted on HBO Max, where it instantly became a favorite among subscribers, the 1998 fantasy pic has found another streaming home. Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters Sally and Gilly Owens, it was released on October 16, 1998, and later landed on HBO Max on October 1, 2024, where it climbed to the #5 spot the following day. Even so, the film was not much of a success either critically or commercially, considering its worldwide earnings of $68.3 million against a $75 million budget and its rotten 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite flopping, the romantic drama has already received the sequel treatment, scheduled to premiere on September 18, 2026. As fans gear up for its arrival, Hulu plans to add the original to its platform starting August 1. The magical film will join numerous other classics also debuting on the same day, including 10 Things I Hate About You and another Bullock-starrer, 28 Days.

Do you believe in Magic? Owens sisters’ first day on set!” Kidman wrote in the video’s caption, adding a sparkles emoji and the hashtag #PracticalMagic. In the original Practical Magic — directed by Griffin Dunne and based on a 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman — Kidman and Bullock played Gillian “Gilly” Owens and Sally Owens, two witch sisters dealing with a curse upon the Owens family’s love lives and a reappearance (or two) of Gilly’s abusive boyfriend. Not everyone may be obsessed with the era of sequels and reboots, but at least fans get to see their favorite classics return in an all-new form, usually with the original stars, on either small or large screens, or even both. One such classic is the bewitching 1998 pic Practical Magic, which is getting the sequel treatment but won’t be released till the fall of 2026. While fans eagerly anticipate, we have a major casting update, which comes not long after two major returnees joined the enchanting sequel.

Darren Aronofsky, the acclaimed director known for powerful films like Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and The Whale, is taking a bit of a new direction with his new movie. He's stepping into the world of comedic action with his latest pic, Caught Stealing, from Sony Pictures.
This film is already generating buzz, drawing comparisons to gritty, darkly funny crime capers like Snatch and Layer Cake. So, if you enjoy movies with intense plots, a touch of dark humor, this one should be right down your alley.
Austin Butler leads the film and plays a character whose promising baseball career ended before it even began. His life takes an unexpected and dangerous turn when he agrees to look after his punk rock neighbor's cat. This simple favor leads to a case of mistaken identity, throwing him into the path of some very dangerous individuals.

Sally Owens’ (Sandra Bullock) spell-casting eldest daugther, Kylie Owens, will be a no-show in the upcoming Practical Magic 2, or, at least, the role won’t be played by Evan Rachel Wood this time around. Wood, along with Alexandra Artrip’s portrayal of Antonia, played the two children of Sally and the nieces of their spellbinding Aunt Gillian (Nicole Kidman). Sadly, though, Wood confirmed in a story posted to her Instagram account that she would not be returning for the sequel, and it seems she did want to be a part of the magical sequel. Wood wrote on social media:

After a career of intense character dramas, Darren Aronofsky changes up his style for a crime caper that has a surprising amount of levity for the filmmaker. Sony has just unveiled a new poster for Caught Stealing. The one-sheet is reminiscent of a collage with picture cut-outs that are glued together for decoration. The film is penned by Charlie Huston, who is also the author of the book that the movie is based on. The cast sports a list of impressive names that include Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio and Carol Kane.
The official plot synopsis reads,
“Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore, but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is...

The one-night-only event is called Full Moon Slumber Party and will take place on Saturday, August 9.
As reported by Fangoria, the double-bill event will start at 6:45 Pm when the doors of the classic location open and fans enter the venue. As expected, the show doesn't only include the two screenings. Costumes are encouraged, and usually, there are surprise guests. The stars turn out for Mariska Hargitay.

Nicole Avant, film producer, activist and former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas, was at Taormina Film Festival on Friday to receive an award for the film “The Triple Six Eight,” which tells the true story of the only Black female regiment in the American army during World War II. Variety sat down with her earlier in the day.
What are you working on at the moment?
I have a few things on my slate. I have something with Tracey Edmonds, my fellow producer, that was greenlit at Netflix called “Movement.” I can’t talk too much about it. And I hope to be working on something with Griffin Dunne, because I read “The Friday Afternoon Club.” I think it’s one of the best books that I read all year. I did a book event with him in Los Angeles, and so I’ve been nudging him to make this into a TV series.

Voting for the 2025 Emmys officially opened today, and Gold Derby has spotted several intriguing strategies, omissions, and oddities in the ballots, which are available to view on the Television Academy website.
When it comes to the writing and directing categories, a popular strategy is to submit as few options as possible, so as not to split the vote. (Remember how Succession would only submit a single episode in writing each year? It won that race four seasons in a row.) That's why we're so surprised to see ABC's boat-themed medical drama Doctor Odyssey flooding the ballot 11 different times for Best Drama Directing. If the show can't pinpoint one or two stand-out directors out of Jen Lynch, Our Lady J, Tessa Blake, Paris Barclay, Crystle Roberson Dorsey, Brad Buecker, Millicent Shelton, Michael Medico, Steven Canals, Maggie Kiley, and John J. Gray, how are the voters supposed to?

Cue your midnight margaritas, belladonna, and flipped pancakes, because a Practical Magic sequel is officially underway. From Hocus Pocus to Beetlejuice, millennials’ favorite Halloween movies have all gotten the sequel treatment. But Practical Magic, the 1998 fantasy film starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as cursed sister-witches, is the one we’ve all been waiting for, the one that’s always on our minds. It’s so beloved, in fact, that even its stars manifested a sequel while the original was still in production. “You heard our spell,” Kidman said. We most certainly did.

To date, Emmy voters have showered Only Murders in the Building with 49 nominations and seven wins, though none of the main actors has prevailed. That could all change for the buzzed-about fourth season, which aired last summer and is now eligible at the 2025 Emmys.

His costars, Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage) and Selena Gomez (Mabel Mora), are both in sixth place for nominations. Almost three decades ago, Practical Magic hit the screens to show two of the most famous actresses of their time, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, joining hands for the fantasy-comedy romantic book-based film. At the time, the critical reviews it garnered weren’t all that favorable, although the general audience didn’t seem to dislike it so much.
Now, almost 27 years after the release of the original, Kidman has come forward to reveal that the movie, which has since gained a cult following for its cast, soundtrack, and feminist themes, is about to get a sequel. Surprisingly enough, though, although it took so long to be made, this upcoming follow-up movie was actually planned way before!

Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz aren’t done riding their high tides of fame and success yet after their commendable respective performances in Elvis and The Batman. This is because they are returning to the screens, together, this time around, in the black comedy crime thriller Caught Stealing, which is currently set to hit the screens later this year.
The official trailer of the movie was recently released, and the buzz around it is significant. The plot details sound interesting enough to make the flick a must-watch. Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky’s crime comedy Caught Stealing arrives this August. Here’s the first trailer:
Director Darren Aronofsky loves to try his hand at different genres. While there’s often a thrillingly dark edge to whatever he turns his hand to, over the years we’ve seen him delve into horror, drama and surreal psychodrama, to name but a few.
Caught Stealing – his upcoming crime comedy – is out in August. Sony is backing the film, but reportedly isn’t looking at it as an awards magnet like Aronofsky’s 2022 drama, The Whale, which was nominated for two Oscars (and won two). Instead, it’s billed as a ‘gritty Safdie-like crime thriller’ with ‘decent’ commercial chances.
Given how offbeat some of Aronofsky’s films can be, the setup for Caught Stealing does sound surprisingly straightforward. The project is based on the book of the same name by Charlie Huston,...

Catsitting a friend’s feline leads to major trouble in Sony Pictures’ Caught Stealing. The trailer shows Austin Butler reluctantly watching Matt Smith’s furry Bff, getting beat up by thugs, and then running for his life. The lesson? Just say no to watching a friend’s cat.
Joining Austin Butler and Matt Smith in the crime caper are Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), and Carol Kane.

Austin Butler finds big trouble in the Big Apple with Caught Stealing, the latest from director Darren Aronofsky.
Sony just released the first trailer for the upcoming crime caper, and here's everything you need to know.
What's the story?
Butler stars as Hank Thompson, a former high school baseball hotshot, who volunteers to cat-sit for his punk-rocker neighbor (played by The Crown's Matt Smith) and winds up with a lot more trouble than just scooping out the litter box.
Soon, he's ensnared in a criminal enterprise involving a United Nations of gangsters and many, many guns.
Who stars in Caught Stealing?
In addition to Butler and Smith, Caught Stealing stars Zoë Kravitz as Hank's bartending girlfriend, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny), and Carol Kane.

The highly anticipated movie from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, Caught Stealing, has it’s first trailer and a release date – August 29 – and I can’t wait!
From Sony Pictures, the film stars Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), and Carol Kane.
Aronofsky’s films, all psychologically intense and often surreal, include Pi (1998), Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), The Wrestler (2008), Black Swan (2010), Noah (2014), Mother! (2017), The Whale (2022) and Postcard from Earth (2023).
Vanity Fair ran a first look piece in April:
Darren Aronofsky knew he was truly capturing the essence of New York’s wild and unpredictable nightlife when his new movie got hit with a sprinkling of urine.
The uncomfortable encounter happened last fall as Caught Stealing shot scenes beside a tenement in a New York neighborhood that’s famous for its boisterous and bohemian residents and club-goers.
