Fear Anonymous It’s not traditional therapy. It’s confession through fear.

Fear Anonymous is a new film directed by Bron Theron and stars Gerard Marzilli , Tyler Gaylord, Rashida L Hudson ,Tod James , Sarkis Bakalyan, Kealohi Anderson ,Kristin Selby Gonzalez , Lee Samuel Tang with cameos by Sparkle Soojian, Thomas Tulak and James Duval.

“The concept came right before the pandemic times when I wanted to make a feature and have everyone in the Long Beach film makers club to shoot a story that would fit into an anthology. I wrote the ghost story that became half dead Fred . No one ever did anything so I ended up writing the whole movie. In fact this story takes place the day after Freddy Nash from Half Dead Fred visits the house that was haunted. The single mother Mary-Anne goes to this meeting and has her kids waiting in the car. If you watched Half Dead Fred you know why they are grounded.” – Bron Theron...

‘May’ Blu-ray Review – Lucky McKee’s 2002 Movie Stands the Test of Time as a True Cult Classic
Image
Over the course of its 93 minutes, May intrepidly traverses between disturbing psychological horror, amusing satire, and profoundly sad character study — often simultaneously. Lucky McKee‘s sincere script and direction are anchored by a raw, career-making performance from Angela Bettis.

Bettis stars as the titular character, a mousy, socially inept veterinary assistant desperate to fit in. She quickly falls for the only man to ever notice her, Adam. The handsome cinephile is endeared by her eccentricities at first, but her growing obsession sours their relationship before it has a chance to blossom.

It’s not until the final act of the movie that May decides to take it upon herself to create the perfect companion using her favorite parts of other people. At that point, no one in May’s orbit — from seductive coworker Polly to kinky street punk Blank — is safe from her wrath.

The film wears its Frankenstein inspiration on its sleeve — literally,...

Jason Schwartzman Dropped Out of Richard Kelly’s Film, But Jake Gyllenhaal Turned It Into a Cult Classic
Image
Jason Schwartzman was supposed to lead the star-studded cast of Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko. He expressed interest in the script and agreed to play Donnie, but he eventually had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. It was at this point that Gyllenhaal got his hands on the script and was mesmerised by it. He once said that he pulled over to the side of the road to finish reading it.

Donnie Darko is one of those rare sci-fi psychological thrillers that leave the viewers with more questions than answers. However, the film received poor reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, following which Kelly found it hard to find U.S. distributors for the film. While its initial theatrical gross was a measly sum, the film went on to attain more money on reissues and a cult status.

Jake Gyllenhaal saved Donnie Darko after Jason Schwartzman had to drop out of it Jake Gyllenhaal,...

May (2002) Movie Explained: Ending, Themes & Social Alienation and Desire for Companionship Analysed
Lucky McKee in The Woods (2006)
Lucky McKee’s directorial debut May is a psychological horror/thriller film released in 2002 starring Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, and James Duval. Combining the elements and conventions of horror and slasher, it is an oddly moving, distinctive, and discomforting film about the desperate need and desire for human touch and belonging. It follows a socially awkward and lonely veterinary assistant with a lazy eye, and her increasingly desperate attempts to connect with the people around her. When the simpering woman-child is rejected by her crush with perfect hands and everyone around, she descends into depravity and decides to build a friend for herself, using the body parts of her former acquaintances.

May captures the way extreme isolation and stress can stir up disturbances in a woman’s conscience. Mckee draws inspiration and influence from several horror predecessors and amalgamates together to bring about a neo-feminist camp horror. Primarily,...

Wtf Happened to Gone in 60 Seconds?

Is there any contemporary actor more iconic than Nicolas Cage? Instantly identifiable and beloved by both mainstream audiences and cult aficionados, it’s hard to believe that there was a time when Nicolas Cage wasn’t considered a bankable leading man. While movies like Raising Arizona and Moonstruck established him as a quirky lead, in 1990, he made an action movie called Fire Birds, which was like Top Gun with helicopters and whiffed at the box office. He had a solid hit as a romantic lead in Honeymoon in Vegas. However, in 1995, the same year he delivered an Academy Award-winning performance in Leaving Las Vegas, he was still considered so minor of a star that David Caruso took top billing over him in their remake of Kiss of Death – which – by the way – was another flop. However, that all changed when uber producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer decided Cage had potential as an action hero,...

Criterion Collection Release: Teen Apocalypse Trilogy
Image
The Criterion Collection has grown and evolved a lot over the years. From DVD’s to laserdiscs and now 4K blu-rays, the boutique label of physical media releases is the benchmark of quality to hard-core collectors. But one thing that has remained unaltered is their dedication to bringing a varied library of new and old classics to life with the highest quality of visuals and sound.

Related Criterion Collection: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid Review

The September 2024 lineup was stacked, with Happiness being among the most anticipated inclusions by fans. I reviewed that release earlier this month, and you can find that review here. Also among the new releases was Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, consisting of the films Totally F***ed Up, The Doom Generations and Nowhere.

4K Uhd Blu-ray Review: ‘Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy’ on the Criterion Collection
Image
Having established himself with a string of low-budget, transgressive films, New Queer Cinema luminary Gregg Araki expanded his budgetary and artistic palette with his so-called Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, a series of narratively unrelated but thematically linked features about LGBTQ youths living on the margins of a Los Angeles redolent of the desiccated outskirts of the city as seen in Alex Cox’s Repo Man. Like that film, 1993’s Totally F***ed Up, 1995’s The Doom Generation, and 1997’s Nowhere are informed by the legacy and aesthetics of punk, but Araki builds on that foundation with styles drawn from the queer underground, as well as the rise of ’90s alternative music in its myriad forms of noise.

Totally F***ed Up sets the general narrative tone and atmosphere for all three features in the trilogy. Though it does have certain narrative through lines, the most significant of which is telegraphed by...

Donnie Darko's Mysterious Frank The Rabbit, Explained
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Donnie Darko."

Richard Kelly's "Donnie Darko" opens with a nightmarish conversation in the dark. An ominous-looking rabbit named Frank (James Duval) warns a young Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) about the world's imminent end — in 28 days, six hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds, to be precise. Although Frank looks more like a man in a rabbit costume than a tall bipedal rabbit, there is something eerily otherworldly about his presence, with the suit's soulless eyes adding a touch of the macabre. Since this fateful meeting, Donnie is guided by Frank towards a particular end, and the volatile, melancholy teen undergoes several rites of passage over the span of 28 days. Frank's mysterious influence over Donnie is just one baffling aspect of the film, as the mind-boggling nature of the events invites varied interpretations, often blurring the lines between reality and dreams, and ones where the two overlap.

It might...

‘Amityville Karen’ Is a Weak Update on ‘Serial Mom’ [Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

A bizarre recurring issue with the Amityville “franchise” is that the films tend to be needlessly complicated. Back in the day, the first sequels moved away from the original film’s religious-themed haunted house storyline in favor of streamlined, easily digestible concepts such as “haunted lamp” or “haunted mirror.”

As the budgets plummeted and indie filmmakers capitalized on the brand’s notoriety, it seems the wrong lessons were learned. Runtimes have ballooned past the 90-minute mark and the narratives are often saggy and unfocused.

Both issues are clearly on display in Amityville Karen (2022), a film that starts off rough, but promising, and ends with a confused whimper.

The promise is embodied by the tinge of self-awareness in Julie Anne Prescott (The Amityville Harvest)’s screenplay,...

11 Trippiest Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time
Image
Sci-fi allows filmmakers to explore mind-bending concepts and twist reality, resulting in unforgettable and surreal viewing experiences. Not all sci-fi movies take advantage of the genre's potential for bizarre storytelling, but there are plenty of trippy sci-fi films that engage with the genre's furthest reaches. These movies range from psychedelic masterpieces that challenge the audience's perception of reality to nightmares that delve into the depths of human existence.

While there are plenty of accessible sci-fi blockbusters, the genre is also home to some of the trippiest movies in cinema history. As a genre, sci-fi grants creators a unique level of freedom to get weird. The impossibly vast expanses of space, the endless possibilities of the future, and the tricky, reality-bending speculation involved in imagined scientific innovations all mean that the sci-fi genre is perfectly suited to stories that mess with the audience’s minds. Even though the genre has offered...

The latest work from Hungarian directors Gergö Elekes and József Gallai, a voiceover opens Aftermath to establish this world where humanity is on the verge of an important change. A subsequent interview may reveal that more tests are needed, yet it remains clear that humanity is close to a vital medical discovery.

The next scene introduces a distressed Kate (Fruzsina Nagy), who leaves her home with no intention of returning. Upon receiving a call from her irate boss, her frustrations are shared through expository dialogue regarding how she is the only employee who has consistently worked on a major project. In a moment that feels glaringly artificial, Kate takes her eye off the road and is in an accident.

Strand is currently touring the restored (and uncut) film nationwide starting Friday, October 6, and IndieWire shares the exclusive new trailer below.

The cast is led by James Duval, Rachel True, Nathan Bexton, Chiara Mastroianni, Debi Mazar, Kathleen Robertson, Christina Applegate, Ryan Phillippe, Heather Graham, and Mena Suvari, with appearances from Denise Richards, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, and John Ritter. Who Is Frank In Donnie Darko? The Monster Rabbit Explained
Image
Frank, the monstrous rabbit in "Donnie Darko," is actually Elizabeth Darko's boyfriend and has been wearing a rabbit suit to hide his true identity. Frank's purpose is to lead Donnie on a mission of time travel and parallel universes, influencing him to commit certain acts to save his own life and the parallel universe. Frank's role in Donnie's life is complex - he is both a mentor figure, saving Donnie from death, and ultimately loses control as Donnie sacrifices himself to save others.

The 2001 sci-fi film Donnie Darko is brimming with mysteries, and the best and biggest of them all is Frank, a monstrous and humanoid rabbit. Frank first appears in the film when Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Donnie sleepwalks outside his house and onto a golf course, led by a disembodied voice that ultimately leads to Frank. What Went Wrong With 'Donnie Darko's (Thankfully) Forgotten Sequel
Image
“Wake up.” On midnight of October 2, 1998, Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) was awakened by a voice. Following the directions of the voice, he sleepwalks to where it's emanating from. On a golf course in the middle of the night, he meets a giant, menacing-looking rabbit telling him that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. The 2001 film Donnie Darko has become a cult classic with its intriguing yet perplexing storyline that includes time travel and a mysterious and even terrifying rabbit named Frank (James Duval). On June 29, 1995, a man is sitting on a windmill when he is met by an apparition in the form of a girl in a dress, appearing deceased, warning him that in 4 days, 17 hours, 26 minutes, and 31 seconds the world would end. How Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut Changes The Movie (For Better Or Worse)
Image
"Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut" immediately establishes itself as a different viewing experience from the original 2001 film, as Jake Gyllenhaal's teen protagonist rides his bike home in his pajamas to a new soundtrack song. Echo & The Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" is such a signature needle drop that it feels a little off to hear it replaced by Inxs's "Never Tear Us Apart."

It's as if writer-director Richard Kelly is now cueing the audience through music that it's about to enter a new "Tangent Universe," apart from the Primary Universe, just as Donnie himself does in one interpretation of the film. That interpretation gets a stronger push in "Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut," which introduces those capitalized terms onscreen and pulls another soundtrack switcheroo later when it replaces composer Michael Andrews' recognizable "Liquid Spear Waltz" with a piece of opera music.

George Lucas famously changed a song at the end...

“I Like Weird” — Why Lucky McKee’s ‘May’ Remains So Endearing 20 Years Later
Image
There was a time us old folk remember when you would rent a messed up little indie horror movie based solely on the cover and description. No Twitter hyperbole or festival raving aside from what was written on the box (which was often not to be believed). Not even a Rotten Tomatoes score to check! Just the cover art and you. And sometimes, you’d discover a hidden gem.

Lucky McKee’s May (2002) was one of those movies for a lot of people. A weird little flick that found its fanbase on home video. The eventual cult classic didn’t quite pre-date the internet but did come before Netflix and Tubi streaming. I watched it again for the first time in years and was taken back at how unique May really is.

If embarrassing American Idol auditions were a horror subgenre (they probably should be), May would be a perfect pairing.

Gregg Araki’s 1997 Cult Film ‘Nowhere’ Gets 4K Restoration (Exclusive)
Image
Strand Releasing is restoring Gregg Araki’s 1997 cult film “Nowhere,” bringing stars James Duval, Christina Applegate, Debi Mazar and Mena Suvari into 4K. This is the final addition to the restoration of Araki’s 1990’s Teen Apocalypse trilogy. In addition to Strand, the Bureau Sales and French producers Why Not are assisting on the project.

“I’m so gratified that these films are finding a new generation of viewers and seeing them projected at theatres and venues across the globe,” said Araki. Select scenes omitted in the original theatrical “Nowhere” release for MPAA rating purposes will be restored in this new director’s cut.

“Nowhere” is a black comedy take on teen drama. Araki mashes together decades of teenage television and movie tropes and wraps them up in this intense 24-hour snippet into the lives of Los Angeles college students. “Sexy, psychedelic, dementedly funny, with a sensational soundtrack…it’s like ‘Clueless’ with nipple rings,...

New 4K Re-Release Trailer for Gregg Araki's 'The Doom Generation'
Image
"You know that I really only love you." Strand Releasing has debuted a new trailer for a 4K re-release of The Doom Generation, a classic Gregg Araki film from the 90s. It first premiered at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, celebrating its 28th anniversary this year. It was also in the 2023 Sundance Film Festival line-up this year as one of their "From the Vault" offerings. Jordan White & Amy Blue, two troubled teens, pick up an adolescent drifter, Xavier Red. Together, the threesome embark on a sex-and-violence-filled journey through an America of psychos & quickie marts. Starring James Duval, Rose McGowan, & Johnathon Schaech. The Doom Generation, restored in 4K with scenes edited for it's theatrical release in 1995, this version reflects the Director's Cut intended by Araki. It has been completely re-timed / re-edited for today's technological standards. The sound is also remastered in a new 5.1 mix. Araki's films are a bit of an acquired taste,...

Gregg Araki at an event for Mysterious Skin (2004)
Gregg Araki’s Cult Classic Returns in 4K Restoration Trailer for The Doom Generation
Gregg Araki at an event for Mysterious Skin (2004)
While Gregg Araki hasn’t made a feature film in nearly a decade, since 2014’s White Bird in a Blizzard, the director has kept busy on a number of high-profile TV series. Now, he’s revisiting one of his earlier cult classics with the second entry into his “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy,” 1995’s The Doom Generation. Restored in 4K as well as retimed and remastered in a new 5.1 mix, this new version also features scenes that were cut out of the theatrical release nearly thirty years ago. Following the restoration’s premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, it’ll now get a theatrical release from Strand Releasing starting April 7 at IFC Center and the new trailer has landed.

Headed home after a wild night at a Los Angeles club, young lovers Jordan White (James Duval) and Amy Blue (Rose McGowan) pick up a dangerously handsome drifter named Xavier Red...

Gregg Araki’s Erotically Charged Gen X Portrait ‘Doom Generation’ Returns in 4K — Watch the Trailer
Image
Indie filmmaker Gregg Araki’s wild, violent, and erotic “The Doom Generation” has been mostly available on middling DVD releases and occasional repertory prints since its radical release in 1995. Araki’s fifth feature film and the second in his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy — bookended by “Totally Fucked Up” and “Nowhere” — “The Doom Generation” will soon re-open in 4K thanks to a new restoration. Watch the new trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.

In Araki’s chaotic road trip nightmare, headed home after a wild night at a Los Angeles club, young lovers Jordan White (James Duval) and Amy Blue (Rose McGowan) pick up a dangerously handsome drifter named Xavier Red (Johnathon Schaech). Jordan doesn’t see a problem with offering Xavier a quick ride, but his acid-tongued girlfriend thinks he’s a creep. When Xavier inadvertently kills a convenience store clerk, they are forced to go on the run, traversing a bizarre and ultra-violent America.

Sundance Proved That American Movies Can Take Big Risks for Under 10 Million (Column)
Image
Filmmakers submitted 16,000 movies to Sundance this year for a lineup of 111 features and 65 shorts, but the most fearless cinematic achievement I saw during the festival was made 28 years ago. Director Gregg Araki’s “The Doom Generation,” a zany, violent, and erotically charged depiction of Gen-x malaise, returned to the Egyptian Theater, where it last screened in 1995, in a 4k restoration.

“That’s the scene of the crime!” Araki beamed to me a few hours before the new screening — and indeed, watching “Doom Generation” today, it’s almost as if Araki got away with murder, much like his ambling protagonists.

Reassembled by Strand ahead of its April release, the surrealist road trip at the center “Doom Generation” finds a wayward teen couple (James Duval and a pre-“Scream” Rose McGowan) in a spiral of mayhem that starts once the troublemaking hedonist Xavier (Johnathon Schaech) jumps into their car. A series of ludicrous murders,...

How Jake Gyllenhaal Made Donnie Darko's Frank The Rabbit Scenes His Own
Image
Richard Kelly, who was only 25 while directing his genre-hybrid, deliciously ominous "Donnie Darko," had been inspired to pen the screenplay after hearing a news report while growing up in Richmond, Virginia. Per this news report, a chunk of ice had fallen off a plane and crashed into a boy's bedroom. This image haunted Kelly for years, as the incident could symbolize myriad things for the boy who had evaded near death, including questions about the meaning of existence and the concept of deus ex machina. These speculations took shape in the story of Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal), a troubled boy who narrowly evades death, and goes on to unlock the powers of time travel to prevent the collapse of the primary universe. While being mired in teenage angst and existential dread, Donnie is plagued by visions of a man in a rabbit suit, who plays a seminal role in Donnie's heartbreaking journey.

Jake Gyllenhaal Related A Lot To Donnie Darko, Except For All That Rabbit Stuff
Image
Donnie Darko is your typical moody teenage boy. He also happens to frequently converse with a giant bunny rabbit named Frank (James Duval) and thinks the world is going to end in approximately 28 days — just read his forearm! He is also pretty sure that time travel is real, and that the crazy old lady who the neighborhood kids have nicknamed "Grandma Death" (Patience Cleveland) somehow holds the key to understanding all of this.

As the main character of Richard Kelly's 2001 film "Donnie Darko," Donnie's psyche is on full display as viewers watch him struggle to understand his true purpose in life after a gigantic jet engine falls off a plane and smashes into his room one night while he's out sleepwalking. When it was first released, the movie bombed at the box office — it only made a little over 500,000 against a 4 million budget (ouch) — but it has gone on...

5 Great Christmas Movies to Watch This Weekend
Image
Christmas movies are numerous and greatly vary in quality and entertainment value – to put it mildly. For every great one, there are dozens, if not hundreds of disposable, Hallmark-style movies. But, there are no shortage of great holidays picks to entertain you and your family this holiday season, so here are some of our own personal Christmas classics!

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Originally not exactly beloved at the time (critics didn’t appreciate the film and audiences seemed tepid about it), it has now become a family classic that is enjoyed every year. It’s become a sort of cult film that transcended its status and circled back to being a major hit for Jim Henson Studios (and Disney who now owns it). What makes this one so great is that mix of whimsy with a classic performance from Michael Caine who played his character 100 serious and direct while surrounded by Muppets.

Here's Who Brought These Incredible Horror Villains To Life
Image
Why do horror villains scare us so much? Why do characters like Freddy Krueger and Leatherface haunt our nightmares in addition to our movie screens? Experts have several different ideas about the answer, with the general consensus being that horror villains function as metaphors, specifically as ways for us to externalize all our fears about society. "The body that scares and appalls changes over time, as do the individual characteristics that add up to monstrosity, as do the preferred interpretations of that monstrosity," Jack Halberstam writes in "Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters." He continues, "Within the traits that make a body monstrous ... we may read the difference between an other and a self, a pervert and a normal person, a foreigner and a native."

In other words, horror villains come in all shapes and sizes, and on some metaphorical level their effectiveness depends on their ability...

The films, which premiered in 1998 and 1995 respectively, are the first titles announced for the upcoming festival. Both received their world premieres at Sundance — “Slam” premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section and won the Grand Jury Prize, while “The Doom Generation” premiered in the festival’s Premieres section. Both screenings will take place as part of the festival’s From the Collection section, which is dedicated to rescreening notable titles that previously played at Sundance. Each screening will be followed by a panel and discussions with the filmmakers, the details of which will be announced at a later date.

“Before we announce the full slate for the upcoming festival, we are taking a moment to honor our past in anticipation of what is to come,” Kim Yutani, Sundance’s director of programming,...

Every month there always seems to be a new horror anthology released and Tales From the Other Side is one of the latest. A very low budget one but that is something I’m used to and anthology horror is something I generally enjoy so I was happy to give this a go.

Featuring one wraparound segment and six ‘tales’ there’s plenty to see here. So let’s get straight into the first proper tale. ‘Petrified Boy’ at least starts off with some kind of creepy story about a touring circus and its main attraction – the petrified boy. The problem is the...
