The sophomore season of the Gugu Mbatha-Raw-starring thriller Surfacewill premiere in exactly a week, introducing Phil Dunster’s character Quinn, who was added to the series in 2023. With Dunster’s debut coming up in a bit, fans can glimpse what his character looks like courtesy of TV Insider’s exclusive reveal. The Ted Lasso star joins fellow new cast members Freida Pinto, Gavin Drea, Rupert Graves, Tara Fitzgerald, Nina Sosanya, and Joely Richardson in the upcoming installment.

Surface, fans. We have some good news for you! The last time we saw a new episode of the psychological thriller starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw was in September 2022 on Apple TV+. Only a few months later in December that year, the streamer announced that it had renewed the show for a season 2. This bafflingly peculiar and lifeless dramedy comes from Swiss film-maker Pascal Bergamin, who is based in Zurich and London and has released some English-language work in the past. This film has a rural British setting with British characters played by British actors, but it has the feel of something Google-translated from another project, perhaps with a European setting; there is a repeated and weirdly emphatic reference to two art dealers from the German town of Cottbus, mysterious individuals who never appear on screen, and whose existence does not serve any satisfying or interesting purpose.

Acorn TV has now dropped the first episode of Signora Volpe Season 2. This stars Pride & Prejudice star Emilia Fox in a cozy detective mystery about a former M16 agent who now lives in a quaint Italian village, dating a dashing Italian.

Fox portrays Sylvia Fox, a British spy who left her life as an M16 agent after being disillusioned with the organization. In addition, she got divorced from her fellow spy, Adam Haines, portrayed by Jamie Bamber. She decides to reconnect with her artist sister Isabel, portrayed by Tara Fitzgerald.

However, she cannot give up her sleuthing ways. In tremendous shape, Sylvia has keen spy skills including surveillance, and investigative talents, and has some good spy connections at the local gelato shop that help her solve mysteries.

This low-key thriller, set in the late 1950s-early 60s judging by the costumes, harks back to the regional British crime flicks of that period, the sort of movies where penny-stakes gangsters and spivs in shiny suits clash over who will control the ration-card black market. Writer-director Michael Wright clearly has a yen for this milieu and takes care to get the argot right in this tale of Arthur Morel (Paul McGann), a reticent funeral director who gets mixed up with local hoodlum Finlay (Roger Barclay) in a northern town. Yash Raj Films release “Jawan,” headlined by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, bowed in second place with a strong £1.3 million.

In its second weekend, Sony’s “The Equalizer 3” collected £1 million in third position for a total of £4.7 million. In fourth place, in its eighth weekend, Warner.
