Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the Alien franchise.
Of all of horror’s many sagas, few have produced such complex and dynamic female characters as the Alien franchise. From space-trekking astronauts and idealistic scientists to outlaw clones and alien queens, this cinematic galaxy is bursting with inspirational – and sometimes despicable – women fighting for their own survival.
Though Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) remains the series’ most enduring character, each chapter in the century-spanning saga either delivers a new female warrior or expands our understanding of the story’s original survivor.
Alien (1979)
Ridley Scott’s Alien sets the tone for a landmark series in cinematic female empowerment. The Uscss Nostromo is not only guided by an AI system known as Mother, two women occupy prominent roles in the disparate crew. Alright, sweethearts, you heard the man and you know the drill. There have been plenty of documentaries about Aliens before, as anyone who has owned the beloved 1986 sci-fi sequel from James Cameron on its various formats can attest (some hardcore fans still insist the 1992 LaserDisc Special Edition release has never been bettered). But there has never been any documentary quite as extensive, expansive or exhaustive as Aliens Expanded, a title that lives heartily up to its name due to a near-five-hour runtime — not quite as long as an unusually long hypersleep, but not far off. It comes from writer-director Ian Nathan, who has literally written the book on the film.
As with 2019’s Memory: The Origins Of Alien, about Ridley Scott’s original film (also featuring contributions from Nathan), this aims to be the definitive take on a definitive genre classic. With a runtime like that, it is fair to...

Let’s face it, streaming services have lost a lot of their appeal. Between their ever shifting libraries, their kneecapping of theaters, and their tendency to overwhelm viewers with substandard garbage, it’s hard to be excited about our streaming present. Heck, most services now play the same couple of ads over and over, even for paying customers!
With every annoying insurance ad and every movie suddenly shoved from a service you bought to a different service you don’t have, Tubi looks better and better. Tubi is one of many free streaming services available online. Like most other services, free or otherwise, Tubi interrupts the programming with occasional ads.
But Tubi also has an outstanding library, one that rivals Max, with its oft-threatened TCM and Ghibli channels. Still, Tubi can be overwhelming to some users, who can’t always see the gems alongside stinkers such as Big Stan (starring Rob Schneider!

Yaphet Kotto as Jean-Luc Picard? Wesley Snipes as Geordi? Jenny Agutter as Dr. Crusher?
Gene Roddenberry considered all of these actors for Star Trek: The Next Generation before casting Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden. However, the most surprising alternate idea for a Tng character involved Tasha Yar, the ill-fated security chief aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.
The Tale of Macha Hernandez
The Tng series bible, released before the show premiered as a guide for writers and actors, describes Yar in terms similar, if not completely one-to-one, with the character we know from the series. “Born at a ‘failed’ Earth colony of renegades and other violent undesirables, she escaped to Earth in her teens and discovered Starfleet, which she still ‘worships’ today as the complete opposite of all the ugliness she once knew,” the description explains.

Since its launch, Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship program has supported a wide variety of projects: shorts, features, both narrative and nonfiction. Not to mention the occasional new media project, special event or advocacy initiative. Each month’s Fiscal Spotlight column announces three new projects taking part in the program.
But maybe you’re curious how some of those prior subjects have turned out. Well hey, you’re in luck! Once again it’s time for another FiSpo Update highlighting the recent achievements of previous Fiscal Spotlight subjects.
Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship program opens the door to nonprofit funding for independent filmmakers and media artists. The projects and makers participating in the program express a uniqueness of vision, celebrate diversity and advance the craft of filmmaking through the creation of these special works. The Mummy (1932)
While future entries in Universal’s Mummy franchise would (until the more recent reboots) present the character as a bandage-wrapped monster that likes to strangle people and carry women around, Karl Freund’s 1932 version of The Mummy allowed the legendary Boris Karloff to give more of a performance in the title role. In the previous episode of The Arrow in the Head Show, hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek were joined by Chris Margetis of The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre to discuss one of my all-time favorite films, the 1986 classic Trick or Treat. In the new episode, The Arrow and Lance are revisiting another ’80s classic, one of my favorite vampire movies, Near Dark (watch it Here)! To find out what they had to say about Near Dark, check out the video embedded above.

My boyfriend had seen Aliens before we watched it together recently. Of course he had. Tommy loves science fiction and Aliens is one of the few perfect movies ever made in any genre, with so many elements that are not just immaculately assembled and realized in their own right but tremendously influential to how cinema subsequently related to sci-fi and war films. What’s undeniably stock about its characters and scenario is fresh and alive to behold, mixing an absolute lack of subtlety with nuance, modulation, and unimpeachable judgement.
This is certainly the case with Jenette Goldstein’s performance as Private Vasquez, a member of the military unit assigned to accompany Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and her Weyland-Yutani Corporation handler Burke (Paul Reiser) to a terraformed colony on a planet that may or may not already be lost...

The 19th annual Flashback Weekend may be months away, but the announcements surrounding Chicago’s longest running horror convention have been coming in hot and heavy over the last few weeks, and genre fans in the Midwest definitely do not want to miss out on all the Flashback festivities that will be headed to the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Chicago (Fbw’s new home!) from Friday, July 31st through Sunday, August 2nd, 2020.

The Doomed Mission is a substantial trope in sci-fi action-adventures like Annihilation, but it's one that director Alex Garland and Co. (and maybe Jeff Vandermeer, but I haven't read his book upon which the film is based) approach in a notably holistic manner. “Why did my husband go on a suicide mission?” asks Lena (Natalie Portman), a military biologist, of Ventress (Jennifer Jason-Leigh), the hardened psychologist. Ventress's response, an intuitive gloss of Beyond the Pleasure Principle, suggests that the instinct for self-destruction pops up in mundane ordinary habits: through over-drinking, over- working, or abandoning what and who you love. Then, the psychologist throws the question back at the cancer-cell biologist. Why does life produce the conditions of its own demise? Who said that self- destruction is a purely psychological phenomenon? What makes Annihilation exhilarating as sci-fi is that, like 2016's Arrival, it's not about scientific knowledge as a unified system,...

Still looking sharp 26 years since its premiere, James Cameron’s picture completely masters the mass audience thriller while pushing the effects envelope far beyond the industry’s horizon. Technically slick, conceptually brutal, Cameron’s style is what still prevails in action-based Sci-Fi. All this, and Ah-nold too.

Twenty-six years after it blasted onto screens in the summer of 1991, James Cameron’s smash-hit Terminator sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day has been given an immaculate clean-up and 3D conversion treatment for this missed-it-by-a-year anniversary release. Supervised by Cameron himself, the newly tweaked 3D effects are reason enough to see the film again, but does it still hold up after all this time? The short answer is yes. Yes, it does.

Star Trek: 50 Artists 50 Years (Titan Books)
There have been a number of interesting books released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, but there’s no question that 50 Artists 50 Years is the handsomest. As the title makes clear, the premise is simple: 50 respected artists, all with wildly unique styles, were tasked with creating a work of art highlighting some element of the Trek universe. There’s plenty of original series — Glen Brogan’s jaunty representation of the bridge of the Enterprise is my personal favorite — and lots of Spock. Plus, Leonard Nimoy himself...

Aliens: The Set Photography was released earlier this month in unison to the 30th anniversary of the release of the movie. It gives you an in-depth behind the scenes look at what it took from the cast and crew to put this movie together. The quality and detail of the images are unbelievable and can't be compared to any other publisher of set photography books. This book is broken down into how production went for the major acts of the movie. Along with the photography from the set each image is accompanied with either an detailed description or a quote from one of the actors from the movie. A majority of the photos included in this book have never been seen before, so even if you have watched the movie hundreds of times I guarantee that there will be images you haven't seen.

July 18, 2016 marks the 30th Anniversary of James Cameron Aliens, and we caught up with actress turned business owner Jenette Goldstein last year who most will remember as "Vasquez" the tough chola soldier at war with aliens. CineMovie is talking to her about her role in the classic action film, and how she transformed herself into a "chola" from East Los Angeles.

Today is Alien Day, on which sci-fi and horror fans pay homage to the Xenomorphs from the “Alien” film series who can easily kill us in a dozen different gruesome ways. To celebrate, fans of the series can catch screenings of the first two movies, by Ridley Scott and James Cameron, at theaters across the country. Ellen Ripley herself, Sigourney Weaver, will attend a screening of “Alien” in New York. In Los Angeles, Jenette Goldstein and Carrie Henn, who played Private Vasquez and Newt, will attend a screening of the sequel, “Aliens.” But in case you’re under lockdown in a colony.

On April 26th, 20th Century Fox and Alamo Drafthouse will screen Alien and Aliens in theaters across the country (buy tickets here), and in advance of that date -- recently dubbed "Alien Day" by the powers-that-be -- I hopped on the phone with Aliens star Jenette Goldstein, who played hardened marine Private Jenette Vasquez in James Cameron's explosive 1986 sequel. Thanks to Cameron's script and direction, the character challenged every long-held notion of what a woman could be in an action film; Vasquez was brawny, deep-voiced and completely unapologetic about her unconventional manner and appearance. In that vein, Goldstein -- who in conversation is distinctly unlike the tough-talking soldier she played -- offered one particularly apropos anecdote from the film's extensive production period. "I had psoriasis, and I had this big outbreak on my knee that looked like I had fallen off a motorcycle," she told me. "Like, red on my legs.

Any proper fan of the Alien franchise knows that 426 is a special number: Lv-426 is the name of the moon where Ripley and company first encounter the xenomorphs. In their honor, 20th Century Fox has proclaimed April 26 to be Alien Day. This means there will be a bunch of Alien-themed events (you can find a nice round-up here), including Reebok making special edition "Alien Stomper" shoes modeled after Ripley's footwear in Aliens and Alamo Drafthouse holding screenings of Aliens (which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year) across the country. The Los Angeles screening will have Jenette Goldstein (Pvt. Vasquez) and Carrie Henn (Newt) in attendance, while the New York screening will have Ripley herself, Sigourney Weaver. If you've ever wanted to watch Ripley with Ripley, this is for you. (Also, if you're a big Ripley fan, you should be ashamed of yourself for letting her just barely lose out...

Sometimes it’s psychological. Sometimes it’s visceral. It can be a masked killer’s twisted pastime. A labyrinth our poor heroes must find their way out of. Perhaps a nasty round of torture by the Big Bad. Whatever it is, the sick feeling of impending doom overcomes us as we realize the characters might not make it out alive. Sometimes they can think their way through. Sometimes they can fight. But when the exits are closed and the madman decides to get creative, all bets are off.

From anime to pitch-black thrillers, here's our pick of the underappreciated movies of 1987...
Sometimes, the challenge with these lists isn't just what to put in, but what to leave out. We loved Princess Bride, but with a decent showing at the box office and a huge cult following, isn't it a bit too popular to be described as underappreciated? Likewise Joe Dante's Innerspace, a fabulously geeky, comic reworking of the 60s sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage.
What we've gone for instead is a mix of genre fare, dramas and animated films that may have garnered a cult following since, but didn't do well either critically or financially at the time of release. Some of the movies on our list just about made their money back, but none made anything close to the sort of returns enjoyed by the likes of 1987's biggest films - Three Men And A Baby, Fatal Attraction...

A little over seven years after the release of Ridley Scott’s Alien arrived in theaters, James Cameron brought out the big guns (literally) with his action-oriented sequel Aliens, which dominated over the summer of 1986 as it held the number one spot on the box office charts for four weeks straight.
Starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Carrie Henn, Jenette Goldstein, Mark Rolston, and William Hope, Aliens follows Ellen Ripley, the sole (human) survivor of the events of Scott’s original film, and a rag-tag crew of Colonial Marines back to the planet Lv-426 where Ripley and her crew first encountered the deadly alien species after a terraforming colony located there mysteriously goes dark.
The complete antithesis of Scott’s Alien, Cameron’s sequel was a raucous action/sci-fi mash-up that took everything that made the original movie so great and then kicked it up...

The stars of Aliens have reunited 28 years after the film first premiered.

Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Jenette Goldstein, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Carrie Henn were all on hand to celebrate the film at a recent convention in Calgary.
The stars took to the stage at the Comic and Entertainment Expo, where they posed for pictures and discussed the legacy of the movie.
Biehn reportedly said: "You just kind of fall into the same personalities, the same friendships, the same thing we had 25 years ago.
"I was saying to myself, 'It's like time hasn't changed. Everybody looks good, everybody is taking care of themselves.' And then I looked over and saw Newt, the little girl, who is also 25 years older. It kind of brought me back to,...

So here we are in Christmas week, most of the usual streaming companies have done well for you so that you won’t be too bored post turkey when you have to tolerate the family. February's Women in Horror Month is a great opportunity to unite female horror enthusiasts, journalists, actors, directors, screenwriters, producers, and the like. But that doesn’t mean that the efforts of the women who fight for their place in the industry shouldn’t also be recognized throughout the year. There are many talented female directors, screenwriters, producers, and actors working in the production of genre films on a daily basis, but they don’t always receive the same level of recognition as their male counterparts. We hope for a time when Women in Horror Month will no longer be necessary, but we have a long way to go before that becomes a reality. So, to show our appreciation for the hardworking women who toil away in the horror genre, we'd like to spotlight five of our favorite female-helmed horror films. Chained Jennifer Chambers Lynch (Boxing Helena) turned out a restrained...

Ever since Hicks, Ripley and a supporting cast of Colonial Marines first crept around the moody environs of Hadley's Hope in 1986, videogames have seemingly been in thrall to Aliens' future world. With Valentine's day just around the corner, we believe nothing says “I Love You” more than a little old-school bloodletting, and the folks at Fright-Rags strongly agree. To celebrate this day of romance, they've unveiled a limited edition design commemorating Kathryn Bigelow's 1987 classic Near Dark. The vampires in this film don't sparkle, thank goodness... but they do slash throats, crash cars, and kick much ass. They also fall in love, as depicted in the film's central romance between Mae (Jenny Wright) and her recent undead convert Caleb (Adrian Pasdar). Those lovers don't get a closeup on this design, but main vamp baddie Jesse (Lance Henriksen) and his partner Diamondback (Jenette Goldstein) are front-and-center, along with their sort-of child Homer (Joshua John Miller) and crazed sidekick Severen (Bill Paxton). The limited edition design will be available at this link only from 10:00pm Est Thursday, February 14th through 10:00am Est Monday,...
