Tim Burton’s take on Batmanis considered to be one of the best film versions of the iconic DC comic. Starring Michael Keaton as the titular Caped Crusader, Burton’s 1989 Batman won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction. You don't have to stay home washing your tights this summer: two classics of modern superhero cinema are returning to theaters. 1989's Batmanand its 1992 sequel, Batman Returns, are returning to theaters courtesy of Dolby Cinema. But the Bat-Signal won't stay on forever: this special event is one night only. Both films will screen on August 25 at all Dolby Cinema at AMC Theaters nationwide.
Both films have been remastered for both Dolby Vision picture and Dolby Atmos sound, giving unparalleled depth to Tim Burton's black-on-black vision of Gotham City and its inhabitants, and to the films' distinctive soundscapes and Danny Elfman's indelible scores. Batman Returns was, in fact, the first film ever to be presented in Dolby Digital, the precursor to Dolby Atmos. Says Burton, "I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity, beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting.

In terms of cinema, there's nothing more frustrating than jumping aboard a potential franchise, only to see studio heads pull the plug due to poor critical reception, underwhelming box office, or negative fan backlash. Surprisingly, this happens a lot, with an assortment of properties left dangling without a proper resolution to their storylines.
Typically, the fault lies with the producers, who too often put the cart before the horse and spend far too much time setting the stage for future sequels and spinoffs rather than focusing on laying a solid foundation for their property. And so, we're left with a bevy of incomplete films that vanish into the void -- often leaving a lot of unrealized potential on the table.
We've perused the cinematic landfill for examples of this unfortunate filmmaking staple and found 15 noteworthy cliffhangers that were never resolved. So grab some popcorn and take a look -- and don't worry,...

"You can't buy me! I don't work here!" Studiocanal UK has revealed a brand new trailer for a 4K restoration version of the 1951 comedy classic The Man in the White Suit, directed by British filmmaker Alexander Mackendrick. (Though it didn't hit US theaters until 1952.) Sounds like it's just as relevant today as it was 74 years ago! Sidney Stratton, laboratory dishwasher at a textile mill, is secretly at work on the invention of a new fabric that will never get dirty and never wear out. But the powers that rule us won't let it get out. An altruistic chemist invents a fabric which resists wear and stain as a boon to humanity, but big business and labor realize it must be suppressed for economic reasons. (Of course...) The film followed a common Ealing Studios theme of the "common man" against the Establishment. In this instance the hero falls foul of both...

Acclaimed filmmaker Akiva Goldsman opens up about the fabled Schumacher Cut of Batman Forever.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldsman was asked about director Joel Schumacher's cut of the 1995 film, which has been sought after by fans for decades. Regarding the key differences between the theatrical and Schumacher cuts of Batman Forever, Goldsman referenced the infamous human-sized bat that Bruce battles in a deleted scene. Goldsman also recalled the Schumacher Cut including Val Kilmer's Bruce Wayne "having these recurring visions of a red book, which turns out to be his father's diary. There's an entry that says, 'Martha and I want to stay home tonight. Bruce wants to see a movie, so we’re going to take him out.' So he holds himself responsible [for their deaths]."

While director Tim Burton is best known for live-action films like Beetlejuiceand Batman, the filmmaker has more than a few killer animated features under his sinister belt. The one that often gets talked about is The Nightmare Before Christmas – a film which he didn't even direct. However, out of the stop-motion animation classics he did indeed direct, Corpse Bride is arguably his most celebrated in that artful category. Now, in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary, Corpse Bride is finally coming to 4K Blu-ray.
Warner Bros. will be releasing Corpse Bride via a 4K/Digital combo pack steelbook. While the spooky edition doesn't have a release date yet, there is cover art to admire. The outside is simply the film’s logo on a black background, but the inside artwork is more defined. The inner workings of the steelbook feature Emily, aka the “corpse bride,” with a few of the eerie underworld residents.

"Batman Begins" is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The film was only a modest box office success during its original theatrical run, but it still redeemed Batman's image in critics and audiences' eyes after 1997's calamitous "Batman & Robin."
History has been kind to "Batman Begins," and it's definitely one of the most important comic book movies and Batman movies there has been. It was director Christopher Nolan's first blockbuster and action movie, an experience he'd refine on two more Batman movies, "Inception," etc. 2008's "The Dark Knight" is when Nolan became the Christopher Nolan, master filmmaker and box office record breaker, but "The Dark Knight" literally wouldn't have happened without "Batman Begins."
"Batman Begins" was not all Nolan, though. He co-wrote the screenplay with David S. Goyer, who got sole "Story By" credit on "Begins" and returned...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts*is quickly on its way to surpassing what some may consider one of DC’s worst superhero movies ever. The latest MCU installment, led by Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, and Wyatt Russell, could pass 1997’s widely-panned Batman & Robin on a list of The Numbers’ top 100 superhero movies.
Thunderbolts*, from director Jake Schreier, easily took the top spot during its debut weekend and has quickly earned $86 million at the domestic box office. During its theatrical run 28 years ago, Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, starring George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell as the titular characters, earned $107 million.
At its current pace, there’s a high chance that this weekend’s haul could put Thunderbolts* ahead of the DC film that also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, and Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth.

When Tim Burton was first brought on to direct a Batman film in 1989, the filmmaker took the beloved comic book hero in an unprecedentedly dark direction with Burton's distinctive gothic and macabre visual style. Nevertheless, the film grossed over $411 million globally and immediately created demand for a sequel. But, if audiences were already caught off guard by the dark atmosphere and violence of the first Batman, they were woefully unprepared for its even darker follow-up, Batman Returns, released in 1992.
Indeed, the sequel's violence, visuals, and narrative were so off-putting to some viewers that it only grossed about $267 million, nearly $144 million less than its predecessor, despite having a larger budget. Even the merchandising for Batman Returns was damaged by the perceived darkness of the film, with McDonald's canceling its promotional tie-ins to the film in September.

The latest sequel to 1989s Batman John Jackson Millers Batman: Resurrection has a number of connections to Tim Burtons Batman series and its comic continuation. The two Burton Batman films are part of several branching timelines, with the first being the Joel Schumacher Batman films Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Sam Hamm and Joe Quinoness Batman 89 and Batman 89: Echoes comics also continue the story of Michael Keatons Batman, aligning far more with 1989s Batman and Batman Returns.
Millers Resurrection is set between the events of 1989s Batman and Returns, providing some much-needed connective tissue between the two movies. What timeline Resurrection takes place in was initially unclear, as a story set between the two Burton movies could potentially reference lore from the Schumacher films, the Batman 89 comics, or even the DC Extended Universes Flashpoint universe from The Flash. Thanks to a 2024 retcon, 1989s Batman now includes the cinematic debut of a classic DC villain. 1989s Batman was a game-changing success for not only Batman's live-action movie landscape, but also the superhero genre and the way big-budget blockbusters are marketed. The film made Batman DC Comics and Warner Bross most marketable superhero property and directly (or indirectly) led to a slew of beloved superhero properties, from various sequels and reboots to the DC Animated Universe itself.

Quick Links An Incredibly Awkward Dinner Between Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones Jim Carrey's Take on the Batman Forever Situation
Batman Forever was the highest-grossing film of 1995 at the domestic box office, but it was a tough road to get it to that success. First was the tonal change after losing Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, and then there was the shoot itself. One major problem: Tommy Lee Jones genuinely couldn't stand his co-star, Jim Carrey.
On the screen, both turn in scenery-chewing villainous performances. It's as if they're trying to one-up each other at every turn. When Carrey talked to the late Norm Macdonald on his Norm Macdonald Live podcast back in 2017, he shed some light on how things were equally combative behind the scenes. In short, the ever-gruff and stern Jones had been in the film industry since 1970. He scored some minor hits along the way, such as 1980's Coal Miner's Daughter,...

Thanks to Colin Farrells powerhouse performances in The Batman and, most recently, The Penguin, DC fans are now engaging in serious discourse about who the best live-action Oswald Cobblepot (or Cobb) is. Like Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, Farrell has put in a ton of effort to make his character as perfect as possible. But in a world where some fans still feel Jack Nicholson was the best Joker, some believe that Danny DeVitos performance in Batman Returns can never be topped. But is that the case? Thats a topic worthy of hours of debate.

Our favorite villains have just gotten together and wow, it was nothing short of nostalgic. Well, almost; all that’s needed for the memory to click is for Arnold Schwarzenegger to be covered in blue ice and Uma Thurman to become a giant green thing with an ultra-sexy face. But don’t worry, my imagination still works perfectly.
But the main thing here is, even after all these years, these villains are still gunning for Batman. Sorry, Batman, but I’m on their side.
Arnold Schwarzenegger And Uma Thurman – Share Reunion News In Cute Snap
I feel like the stars are aligning. First off, we get a Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger reunion at the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony. By the way that joke thing they did – “Arnold and I are presenting together, for a very obvious reason,” DeVito announced, with Schwarzenegger adding, “We both tried to kill Batman.” – was hilarious.
But the main thing here is, even after all these years, these villains are still gunning for Batman. Sorry, Batman, but I’m on their side.

Stars: Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Mark Eden, Barbara Steele, Michael Gough, Virginia Wetherell, Rosemarie Reede, Derek Tansley | Written by Mervyn Haisman, Henry Lincoln, Jerry Sohl | Directed by Vernon Sewell
The Tigon-produced The Curse of the Crimson Altar is often regarded as a classic of the genre due to its eerie atmosphere and notable cast, which includes genre icons Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, and Barbara Steele. Directed by Vernon Sewell, the movie loosely adapts H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Dreams in the Witch House but takes creative liberties in its storytelling.
The film centres around Robert Manning (Mark Eden), an antique dealer who visits a remote mansion while searching for his missing brother. He is invited by the seductive Eve (Virginia Wetherell) to stay at the mansion, which is presided over by the mysterious Morley family, led by the imposing J.D. Morley (Christopher Lee). Michael Keaton has portrayed some of cinema's most iconic characters, including Beetlejuice and Batman, so the actor should be forgiven for forgetting he played one of the best villains in a Marvel movie. Keaton made his MCU debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming as an updated version of the popular comic-book villain, the Vulture. The McU's Vulture harnessed alien technology from the Battle of New York (shown in The Avengers) to develop dangerous technology, as opposed to wearing a skin-tight bird suit.
While participating in the Wired Autocomplete Interview, Michael Keaton reflected on his time in the MCU. At least, he tried to. The actor completely forgot he appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Keaton said he was asked about the movie a few days prior, and had to look it up on Google to remember who he actually played. Keaton said:

The Michael Keaton Batman movies have led to numerous sequel and spinoff properties, taking place in as many as 4 different DC Universes. Critically, commercially, and culturally, 1989s Batman was a huge success for DC and Warner Bros, cementing itself as a pop culture phenomenon and leaving a lasting impact on how major blockbuster films are marketed. The films 1992 sequel, Batman Returns, did not reach the same soaring heights as its predecessor, at least initially. Returns was a controversial film whose violent and sexual content and significant deviations from the Batman comic source material offended many viewers.
Batman Returns does hold up in many regards, however, especially with viewers looking back with fresh eyes, appreciating the live-action Batman movie and its bold choices and aesthetic qualities. Even with the films initial controversy, it was hardly the end of the original franchise. The story of Michael Keatons Batman continued in a variety of properties,...

Wednesday Season 2 brings the show's incredible cast, characters, and sets back for a second time, but the new season might be leaving the show's most viral moment behind. Starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, Season 1 shipped the titular heroine off to Nevermore Academy, a safe school for "outcasts." While Wednesday tries to solve a series of mysterious murders, she is forced to endure the more mundane aspects of school life, including a Halloween dance. The scene gave the world the famous Wednesday dance, set to "Goo Goo Muck" by The Cramps, which quickly became a trend on social media.
During an interview with Extra TV about her starring role in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ortega was asked if Season 2 will feature a similar dance scene. The actress said that she's already shot four episodes of the new season, and, so far, hasn't been forced to dance again on camera.

Many movie productions have stories that seem to defy belief, and the tale of Danny DeVito being bitten on the testicles by his monkey co-star while filming Batman Returns is right up there with the best. Now actual footage of the moment has resurfaced online, after being saved from a YouTube channel that used to host the footage but has since closed down.
While many movies featuring animals now involve a lot of CGI work around their furry cast members, back when Batman Returns was filmed in the early 90s, the vast majority of animal characters were played by actual animals on the set. This was certainly true of the monkey member of the Penguins Red Triangle gang in Tim Burtons sequel to 1989s hit superhero movie.

Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight explores madness through a reflection on the shared space between Joker and Batman. Jared Leto's Joker in Zack Snyder's Justice League reflects on Batman's legacy and the impact of their relationship, delving into their shared fate. Cesar Romero's Joker in Batman (1966) embodies a toned-down, prank-loving version while focusing on causing mischief over destruction.
The Joker may be the most quotable character in the entire DC Universe. Since appearing in Batman #1 in 1940, the Clown Prince of Crime has been the most iconic and effective foil to Bruce Wayne's hero. Channeling madness, charm, and upsetting uses of violence, The Joker has become a necessary character in the Batman canon and has appeared in movies and television with diverse interpretations. With the release date of Joker: Folie Deux set for late 2024, there has been no better time to review the canonical quotes of the DC villain.

Hard to believe today, but Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1949 drama was a flop. A glum, perhaps cynical, claustrophobic piece of film noir shot in black-and-white, The Small Back Room was released just four years after the end of the Second World War – and it was not what postwar audiences wanted to see. Indeed, it is hardly one of the most celebrated titles in the Powell/Pressburger catalogue and I, for one, had never seen it before. Even so, having just watched this consummately photographed and magically restored work, I would say without hesitation it is one of my very favourite Powell and Pressburger films.
With the psychological complexity of a good play and replete with telling touches, it blends both the disciplines of Hollywood film noir with the Expressionism of the Weimar cinema of Germany, but with its own ineffable, stiff upper lip Englishness.

Despite Penguin's death in Batman Returns, DeVito joked about the possibility of reuniting on-screen with Schwarzenegger and Michael Keaton. DeVito and Schwarzenegger are working on a new project together, hinting at another movie to come very soon after many years of trying.
Danny DeVito would be all-in to reprise his Batman Returns role as Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin, and wouldn’t mind teaming up with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr Freeze to take on Michael Keaton’s Batman. Michael Keaton recalls the initial reaction that comic book fans had when he was chosen to portray Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton-directed film.
Until then, Batman had been a character on a campy television series. However, Batman would mark a before and after for the superhero movie genre.
“When they said ‘We’re thinking of doing Batman,’ I said, ‘Wait, you’re thinking of making a movie about Batman?’,” Keaton said in an interview with GQ.
He continued, “The fact that Tim said ‘That guy, I want that guy’… the fact that people cared one way or another so much is still baffling. But that was a ballsy move on his part. We also had a nice working relationship from Beetlejuice, so he felt that he and I could get along and would work well together.”

Michael Keaton praises Jenna Ortega's talent for understanding and embodying the unique tone of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Jenna Ortega proves herself adept at Tim Burton's gothic sensibilities, potentially becoming his next go-to star. Ortega's collaboration with Burton in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and potential future projects could solidify a fruitful creative partnership.
Michael Keaton has nothing but praise for his Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-star Jenna Ortega. Ortega, who previously worked with Burton on Netflix’s Wednesday, is set to appear as Astrid Deetz, the daughter of Ryder’s Lydia Deetz. The 1989 Batman film's Joker twist, revealing he killed Bruce Wayne's parents, was so good that no future Batman movie will likely attempt to mirror it. The idea that Joker unknowingly created his own arch-nemesis received high praise and elevates both Joker and Batman. The shocking twist in 1989's Batman worsk well, but repeating it would be a bit less exciting now that it's already been seen on-screen.
There's plenty to love about 1989's Batman starring Michael Keaton as the titular Dark Knight, especially its major Joker twist, which will never be beaten. Played by Jack Nicholson, who provided the first truly dark on-screen portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, the script features compelling deviations from Joker's origins in DC Comics. Likewise, one change in particular was so good, no future Batman movie will likely ever attempt to mirror it.

Despite being a box office flop, Halle Berry's Catwoman subtly connects to Tim Burton's Batman Returns through a visible photo of Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, suggesting they exist in the same universe. The connection between the Burton and Schumacher Batman movies is not definitively established, despite references made by the directors and shared actors like Michael Gough and Pat Hingle. Michael Keaton's return in The Flash and George Clooney's cameo further highlight that each Batman movie series exists in its own universe, creating confusion about the overall timeline.

Jim Carrey's Riddler in Batman Forever was fun and energetic, despite the film's overall shortcomings. Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron had potential but was underutilized and focused too much on humor. Jeremy Irons managed to be memorable as Profion in Dungeons & Dragons, despite the film's abysmal reception.
Nothing heightens a movie like a great villain, making it all the more disappointing when they're wasted in terrible movies. Many of the most chilling movie villains, like the Joker in The Dark Knight or Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, prove the prestige an excellent antagonist is held to. An iconic villain can become the most memorable part of a great film, with them occasionally even overshadowing the hero.

DC movies have often had perfectly cast actors who don't get the recognition they deserve. Flawless casting choices can slip through the cracks or be overshadowed by other actors. Paul Reubens' appearance in Batman Returns as Tucker Cobblepot is a chilling portrayal of a high-society monster, setting the stage for Danny DeVito's Penguin. Many actors have brought iconic DC characters to life, such as Jackie Earle Haley's ruthless Rorschach in Watchmen, and Jim Carrey's wacky Riddler in Batman Forever.
Many DC movie castings have been perfect without getting the true recognition they deserve. Casting is an important facet to every movie and TV series, but for movies based upon characters in DC Comics, casting is often an especially meticulous process, as some figures have decades of history and mythology behind them. With such strong attention to detail paid to their casting, many DC movies have created timelessly...

Sixty years is but the blink of an eye for a time-traveler like The Doctor. But for a television series, a Diamond Anniversary is an extremely rare and impressive occurrence.
BBC’s Doctor Who recently celebrated such a milestone with three one-hour specials which, for the first time, streamed globally on Disney+.
Russell T Davies, fresh from his success on ’80s AIDS miniseries It’s a Sin, returned to the show he brought back so successfully to the BBC in 2005. Bolstering his team are returning producers Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson, as well as Jane Tranter, the woman who was instrumental in bringing back Doctor Who in 2005. Bad Wolf, the company founded by Tranter and Gardner in 2015, currently produces the show with BBC Studios.
Another big returning name return was David Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and who also returned for the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013. Beloved by fans and audiences alike,...

Since its inception, Doctor Who has told moral and social allegories using fantastical settings across time and space. The return of the Toymaker in "The Giggle" allowed Russel T Davies to tell one of the most political stories yet in Doctor Who. The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary special doesn't focus on specific issues but rather why civic disagreement has become so contentious.
The following contains spoilers for the third Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special "The Giggle" now streaming on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ worldwide.
When Doctor Who was first conceived, it was meant to be a vehicle for educational programming about history. That went out the window pretty quickly, but like most science fiction and fantasy, it remains a vehicle for sociopolitical allegory about the modern world. The third 60th anniversary special "The Giggle" is perhaps one of Doctor Who's most political stories yet. From the villain...

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.
“When I was young, I was so sure of myself,” the Doctor tells Donna Noble early in the third and final Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special. “I made a terrible mistake.” That bit of exposition catches up viewers who never got the chance to watch the lost First Doctor serial “The Celestial Toymaker,” in which Michael Gough played the Toymaker, the bad guy of “The Giggle,” now played by Neil Patrick Harris. However, it also captures the theme of the episode, in which the Toymaker’s control over reality and the weight of constant running finally catches up to the Doctor and forces him to admit how little he knows.
From the Covid-era satire of the world destroying itself in pursuit of individual truth to the weariness with which the Doctor tells Noble that he was “so certain” about his past actions, “The...
