Donnie Darko (2001) Explained: A Journey Through The Director’s Theory
Image
Donnie Darko (2001) Explained: A Journey Through The Director’s Theory: A month after the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001, a fiction about the transformative power of small catastrophes reached American cinemas. In the plot, a troubled teenager escapes death when an airplane engine crashes into his bedroom. He then starts to have visions with a large bunny rabbit, which instead of presenting playful fantasy, involves him in a dark and criminal premonition.

The fear and distrust that permeated the scene at the time boycotted Donnie Darko’s debut, but word of mouth caught the attention of Pioneer Theatre in New York, which insisted on showing it for two years. Consequently, rejection gave way to catharsis, soon DVD sales soared and the newest generation of midnight films began deciphering enigmas in broad daylight.

Although director Richard Kelly’s script works with philosophical issues and uses references ranging...

The Hotel Oloffson Was a ‘Safe Haven’ in Haiti. Gang Wars Have Turned It to Ashes
Image
Tucked away in a hillside garden a short walk from the restive heart of Port-au-Prince, the Hotel Oloffson was a strange kind of refuge. Through good years and a lot of bad ones, it stayed open to all comers, welcoming despite its dark undertones and somehow immune to Haiti’s political strife. A favorite haunt of artists, celebrities, and local intelligentsia, along with aid workers and journalists needing a stiff rum punch to ease the day’s stress, the Gothic gingerbread mansion weathered brutal bouts of violence and natural disasters...

‘The Protector’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Marguerite Moreau, Graham Greene, April Lee, Matthew Fahey, Brandon Moynihan, Aryeh-Or, Mark Lane III | Written and Directed by Raul Gasteazoro

In the scorched, desolate landscape of The Protector, water is more than a resource, it’s a currency and more than that, it can be a spark for brutal conflict. Directed by Raul Gasteazoro, this indie post-apocalyptic actioner dares to tread the well-worn paths of Mad Max, Book of Eli and The Road while carving out its own identity with visceral action, a haunting atmosphere, and the little-seen undercurrent of hope. The Protector is a bold, adrenaline-fueled journey that wrestles with survival, redemption, and the cost of humanity in a world stripped of those things. So let’s talk about it.

Set in a future plagued by water wars, famine, and a deadly disease known as “The Rot,” The Protector centres on Key (Marguerite Moreau), a convict desperate to...

Taylor Sheridan Fans Should Add His 2017 Neo-Western Crime Thriller To Their Watchlist
Image
According to most historians, the Wild West ended around the turn of the 20th Century, coinciding with the rise of a new medium that would enshrine its mythos in our popular imagination: Cinema. If the movies of Taylor Sheridan are anything to go by, however, it never truly came to a close; just the frontiers and the protagonists have changed. Few modern filmmakers are as committed to telling gritty new Western stories than Sheridan, and he certainly has the credentials. He grew up on a Texas ranch, loves wearing his big old cowboy hat in photoshoots, and he was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2021. He's as good as anybody who regularly works in the genre today at matching intense showdowns and sudden bursts of violence with an authentic touch of social commentary.

Although Sheridan is perhaps best-known for his TV series "Yellowstone" and its historical spin-offs...

Rumor: The Last Of US Star Bella Ramsey Eyed For A "Big Marvel Role"
Image
Coming off their acclaimed turn as Ellie in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey is reportedly being eyed for a Marvel Studios role.

Though this should only be viewed as a rumor for the time being, scooper Mttsh is claiming that Marvel is interested in signing Ramsey for a "big role" in an upcoming project. This obviously covers a lot of ground and even more potential characters, and it's entirely possible that Kevin Feige and co. simply have the highly in-demand actor on their radar.

Ramsey might well have taken a meeting (or two), but Marvel meets with a lot of talent, often without any specific role in mind.

That said, there are some major MCU movies on the horizon, and  - assuming this is accurate - we can't help but wonder if Ramsey might be in line for a role in the upcoming X-Men reboot.

Val Kilmer’s 91% Rotten Tomatoes Western Scores Big on Streaming, and No, It's Not ‘Tombstone’
Image
Val Kilmer’s tragic passing shocked the world earlier this year, but his work will live on forever through his iconic and enduring filmography. One of Kilmer’s most critically acclaimed movies that has perhaps flown under the radar is Thunderheart, the 1992 R-rated contemporary Western that follows a young FBI agent assigned to work with a veteran investigator on a Sioux reservation murder. When most people think of a Kilmer Western, they think of Tombstone, but Thunderheart earned strong scores of 91% from critics and 75% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the streamer, sitting at #5 at the time of writing. Thunderheart also stars Graham Greene and Sam Shepard.

Thunderheart was written by John Fusco, and Michael Apted directed the film. Fusco is still writing projects more than 30 years later, with his most...

We're not sure if the entire episode was posted at any point, but the finale was made available early to people who bought the season pass for the show through Apple. The episode - reportedly titled "Convergence" - was quickly removed ahead of the intended May 25 broadcast date, but not before clips began to circulate on social media.

Spoilers follow.

It looks like the finale is going to cover Ellie picking off the rest of Abby's friends and Abby arriving to the abandoned theater where Ellie, Dina, Jesse and Tommy are holed up to exact her revenge. In the game, Abby kills Jesse...

“Children are rare, water is scarce and life hinges on a delicate balance.

“The resulting land is brutalized by brazen acts of ruthlessness. Rallying around gas-guzzling gladiators, a new and brutal form of drag racing called ‘Dirt-Joust’ has become the sport of the people.;

The Last Of US Season 2 Finale Clips And Stills Tease An Intense Confrontation - Spoilers
Image
Season 2 of The Last of Us concludes next Sunday, and HBO has now shared a series of new promo stills and two clips teasing what's to come in what promises to be an eventful and intense episode.

Spoilers for previous episodes and (potentially) the finale follow.

The penultimate episode, "The Price," consisted of a series of flashbacks to Joel and Ellie's life in Jackson prior to the former's death at the hands of Abby. We learned that Ellie did speak to Joel on his porch the night of the New Year's Eve dance, telling him that she would "like to try" to forgive him for his murderous actions in Salt Lake City back in the season 1 finale.

We are now building to a face-off between Ellie and Abby, but will we see it this Sunday? Without giving too much away for anyone who hasn't played the video game, there...

An official trailer has arrived for a movie called The Protector, a gritty action thriller set in a dusty post-apocalyptic future very similar to Mad Max. This is the feature directorial debut of Raul Gasteazoro, who has been developing this project for years, made on a low budget shot on location with everyone putting their passion into making it. With the region's last source of freshwater buried under a Native American reservation and evil forces angling for control, a convict fighting for her own freedom becomes the unlikely protector of a young boy who may have the power to save it. Starring Marguerite Moreau as Key, a young woman who's the only one with a map to get to a source of water. But once she...

Cannes Review: I Only Rest in the Storm Glides Over Many Ideas Without Fully Reckoning With Their Weight
Image
Late into I Only Rest in the Storm, Sergio (Sérgio Coragem) is asked a question he can’t seem to answer: what do you care about? A Portuguese environmental engineer hired to evaluate the ecological impact of a massive road set to slice through Guinea Bissau, the man has spent his sojourn in a kind of existential paralysis. Granted, the gig has sent him traveling far and wide, shuttling from the capital’s luscious villas to hamlets the project will likely wipe out. He’s schmoozed with the local elite, inspected latrines in the country’s interior, and spent days with fellow Portuguese workers stranded in the desert, guarding cranes as tall as cathedrals. But for all this meandering, Sergio’s at a standstill, unable (or unwilling) to come to terms with the role he’s meant to play in a place he’s never seen before and whose future...

The Last Of US Season 2, Episode 5 Teaser Finally Introduces A Terrifying Threat From The Video Game
Image
In this week's episode of The Last of Us season 2, "Day One," Ellie and Dina narrowly escape from a horde of infected, with Ellie taking a bite in the arm in order to protect the woman she loves.

Of course, Dina had been kept in the dark about Ellie's immunity, and was fully prepared to shoot her in the head to prevent her from becoming a ravenous killer. Fortunately, Ellie is able to convince Dina that she will not turn, and the latter expresses her relief by first telling Ellie that she is pregnant with Jesse's child, and then instigating their first roll in the hay.

The episode also featured a recreation of what has become almost an iconic moment from the game, as Ellie plays a rendition of Ah-ha's "Take On Me" for Dina after discovering a guitar in a run-down music shop.

"[In the show], it's like, I'm fully embracing not...

The Last Of US Season 2, Episode 4 Teaser Features Isaac's Debut... And Dina Pulling A Gun On Ellie!
Image
As The Last of Us season 2 continues, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) must walk "The Path" for the first time in over five years without Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal).

In this week's episode, Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) decide to set off to Seattle to track down and execute Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) - and any of her allies that happen to get in their way - as revenge for her murder of Joel in "Through the Valley," but they vastly underestimate the size of the force that awaits them.

In the final shot, we see an entire army of Wlf (or "Wolves") soldiers patrolling the streets as Ellie and Dina approach the city on horseback.

Now, HBO has released a preview for next Sunday's episode, and in introduces the man who leads the Wlf, Isaac (Jeffrey Wright), in their war against Fedra (Federal Disaster Response Agency) and, more pertinently for this particular story,...

The Last Of US Season 2 Star Kaitlyn Dever On Abby's Surprising Debut & Chilling Revenge Vow - Spoilers
Image
"Slowly. When we kill him, we kill him slowly."

As character introductions go, it doesn't get much more unnerving than Abby Anderson's debut in last night's season 2 premiere of The Last of Us. In a change to the Naughty Dog video game that's proven to be somewhat divisive, the show immediately explains why Abby is seeking revenge against the man who killed her father in the season 1 finale, Joel Miller.

Abby convinces her friends to help her track Joel down, but they decide to investigate a new faction (who will turn out to be the Washington Liberation Front/Wlf) first, and we don't see them again until the closing moments of "Future Days" when Abby's crew arrives to the outskirts of the Jackson settlement.

Dever - who was actually in line to play Ellie back when a movie based on The Last of Us was in development - spoke...

New The Last Of US Season 2 Poster & Stills Released; Kaitlyn Dever Responds To Abby Backlash
Image
HBO recently debuted an intense full trailer for the second season of The Last of Us, and we now have a new poster and some promo stills to go with it.

The key art features returning protagonists Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), while the images spotlight several supporting characters as well as the season's new antagonist, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).

Abby Anderson might well go down as one of the most despised video game characters in history (you'll find out why soon enough), and Dever was fully aware that taking on the role would open the door to a certain amount of backlash.

"Well, it's hard not to see those things on the internet," the Apple Cider Vinegar star tells Screen Rant. "It's hard not to stop myself from looking at it every once in a while, especially going into this, for sure. And I want to do this...

I Am Martin Parr review – enjoyable study of tragicomic Britain’s inspired photographer
Alan Bennett
Valuable documentary on the vigilant genius whose highly coloured 70s and 80s images revealed the white working class as never before

The beguiling work of English photographer Martin Parr is the subject of this brief, but thoroughly enjoyable study which sets out to introduce his extraordinary work, particularly the fierce brilliance of his colour images in the 70s and 80s celebrating the white working class on holiday.

Parr is an inspired combination of seaside-postcard artist Donald McGill and Alan Bennett, with a bit of American street photographer Vivian Maier, and a sliver of Diane Arbus, although the grotesques in which Arbus specialised are not what Parr has in mind. Everyone here is at pains to emphasise that Parr is never cruel or mocking, and, yes, it’s quite true. But as a real artist, Parr naturally has what Graham Greene called the splinter of ice in his heart. He knows...

‘Free Leonard Peltier’ Review: Engaging Doc About Activist Accused of Killing Two FBI Agents in 1975 Is Timelier Than Ever
Image
It’s the sort of twist no screenwriter would dare invent: “Free Leonard Peltier,” a persuasively well-researched and often infuriating documentary about the American Indian Movement activist convicted nearly a half-century ago of killing two FBI agents, had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 27, 2025 — precisely one week after Joe Biden, as one of his very last official acts as U.S. president, issued a commutation of Peltier’s life sentences.

The relatively brief final sequence in the film is obviously a last-minute addition to a completed feature, but never mind: Dramatically and emotionally satisfying, the scene is a welcome and fitting capper for a story that inarguably earns its happy ending.

It’s a story that has been brought to the screen twice before: Once as the factual inspiration for the fictions of “Thunderheart,” the 1992 drama directed by Michael Apted, starring Val Kilmer and Graham Greene; and again as “Incident at Oglala,...

10 Movies & Shows To Watch If You Like American Primeval
Image
There are several other movies and shows similar to Netflix's epic period Western series American Primeval. American Primeval was written by Mark L. Smith, who co-wrote the screenplay for The Revenant with Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Peter Berg directs all six episodes of American Primeval. Taylor Kitsch leads an ensemble cast as Isaac Reed, which features Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Shea Whigham, Lucas Neff, and Kim Coates as Brigham Young. In addition to Young, American Primeval alters several real-life historical details and figures.

American Primeval uniquely blends brutal and violent elements of the horror genre with the classic Western. Despite its 59% Rotten Tomatoes score, it earned an 86% audience score and has been in Netflix's Top 10 TV Shows in the United States since it was released on January 9, 2025. Kitsch previously starred in the Peter Berg film Lone Survivor alongside Mark Wahlberg and Berg's classic television series Friday Night Lights.

‘Laws of Man’ Review: U.S. Marshals Chase Their Tails in a Lukewarm Cold War Thriller
Image
Ambition outstrips expertise in writer-director Phil Blattenberger’s “Laws of Man,” whose serpentine plot winds up seeming a wild goose chase — one whose execution should have been, well, wilder. Action and atmosphere are too poorly supplied for this stab at a noirish retro thriller to emerge as anything but talky, awkward and unconvincing. Set in 1963, it takes a big narrative leap toward the end that suggests an intent closer to such willfully over-the-top Cold War paranoia fantasias as “Dr. Strangelove” and “Winter Kills.” But the satirical edge which might’ve pulled off that gambit is absent throughout, making for a whole that’s peculiar without ever being very engaging. Saban is releasing the feature to U.S. theaters, digital and On Demand platforms Jan. 10.

Based in state capitol Carson City, Frank (Jacob Keohane) and Tommy (Jackson Rathbone) are U.S. marshals who’ve driven 15 hours into the remotest Nevada desert...

Laws Of Man Exclusive Clip: Issuing a Warrant
Image

Does Tate Dutton Die On Yellowstone?
Image
Spoilers for "Yellowstone" to follow.

"1883" predicted the ending of "Yellowstone" when tribal chief Spotted Eagle (Graham Greene) told James Dutton (Tim McGraw) that his family's land would return to the Native American people in seven generations. "Yellowstone" ultimately reveals that Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill) is the family's seventh-generation son, and the prophecy comes true in the end.

While the aforementioned "1883" scene suggests that Tate will be at the center of a violent land dispute, it turns out to be a peaceful transaction. "Yellowstone" season 5 ends with Tate alive and well, though the same can't be said about other characters.

At the same time, the son of Monica (Kesley Asbille) and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) had some close calls with death during his childhood, having come up against Mother Nature, hired assassins, and other nefarious threats. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at the times Tate stared...

Yellowstone's Ending Was Pre-Determined 2 Years Ago In A Different Taylor Sheridan Show
Image
Spoiler Alert for 1883 & Yellowstone season 5, episode 14, "Life Is A Promise"

Yellowstone season 5 finale concludes its most significant stories with an ending that was previously revealed two years ago. Montana’s Indigenous people finally disrupt the Department of Interior’s pipeline when they successfully displace its pipe in the episode’s opening. Beth and Rip bid farewell to the Yellowstone cowboys, who all have exciting endeavors on the horizon. The finale also wraps up Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III's story, who died in the Yellowstone season 5, part 2 premiere.

Beth and Jamie’s war in Yellowstone wraps up as well, with the siblings engaging in an intense brawl. When Rip arrives, he holds Jamie for Beth to stab him in cold blood, with John’s daughter successfully avenging his death. However, none of those segments topped the fate of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, which Kayce sold to the Broken Rock Tribe.

What Happens To The Dutton Ranch In The Yellowstone Season 5 Finale?
Image
The following contains spoilers for the "Yellowstone" season 5 finale.

With the head of the Dutton family now dead and the next generation left to pick up the pieces, there was only one direction "Yellowstone" could go with the land John (Kevin Costner) and his family had fought so hard to keep ahold of. For so many years and five tumultuous seasons, the future of "Yellowstone" was written in its past. All that was left was for Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) to make it happen -- for a suitable price.

As teased in the penultimate episode of "Yellowstone," Kayce had a plan to sell the ranch to Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham). The deal was all but done even before respects were paid to the late John Dutton, who had sworn he would never give even an inch of his property away. By the final episode, though, the ranch had been...

In addition to its Best Picture Oscar, Dances with Wolves, the first film Costner ever directed, earned him the Best Director Award. The movie is based on the 1988 novel of the same title by Michael Blake, who also penned the screenplay for the film. Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 13 Makes The Dutton Ranch's Prophecy More Likely
Image
Spoiler Alert for 1883 and Yellowstone season 5, episode 13, "Give the World Away"

Taylor Sheridan may have already revealed how the hit Neo-Western show will end, and Yellowstone season 5, episode 13, just made the Dutton Ranch prophecy more likely. Before Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), and even John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) lived on the Yellowstone Ranch, their ancestors made a Northwestern journey from Texas to Montana in search of a better life. The 1883 Yellowstone story follows James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret (Faith Hill) Dutton as they travel across the plains to Montana in covered wagons with their children, Elsa (Isabel May) and John (Audie Rick).

After Elsa's 1883 fate ends the Duttons' journey, James meets a Crow Elder named Spotted Eagle (Graham Greene), who tells him he can settle in the Paradise Valley, an old Crow hunting area. However, he tells James that in seven generations, his people will rise and take the land back,...

Did 1883 Already Give Away Yellowstone's Ending?
Image
Spoilers ahead for "Yellowstone" season 5.

"Yellowstone" killing off Kevin Costner's John Dutton has left his loved ones dealing with some major problems. While Sarah Atwood's (Dawn Olivieri) season 5 death removed a major thorn from the family's side, the Duttons still must contend with financial woes, Uncle Sam, and the Market Equities nuisances who want to turn their ranch into an airport. John probably would have found a way to keep the property in the family, but his surviving children might give it back to its rightful owners before the series ends.

There's a scene in the "1883" prequel series where a tribal chief, Spotted Eagle (Graham Greene), tells James Dutton (Tim McGraw) that his people will reclaim the land in seven generations. The Dutton patriarch agrees, seemingly acknowledging that it's fair because it originally belonged to Native Americans. The "Yellowstone" family tree reveals that Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill), the...

15 Best Action Thriller Movies Like Sicario
Image
Movies like Sicario offer explosive action, thought-provoking political intrigue, and awards-pedigree acting talent. Released in 2015, Sicario is a slow-burning thriller about the nuances of drug cartel operations and the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the movie focuses on three perspectives: an FBI agent, played by Emily Blunt; a secretive government agent, played by Josh Brolin; and an even shadowier assassin, played by Benicio del Toro. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it got a sequel three years later, Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

Only the best action-thriller movies remain comparable to Sicario, with its stunning cinematography and deeply ugly subject matter. However, many fan-favorite films by director Denis Villeneuve and other acclaimed filmmakers hit the same spots. Several are also available for subscribers on major streaming platforms or even for free, making it easy to find movies like Sicario for fans...

Kayce's Yellowstone Season 5 'Counting Coup' Threat Supports Taylor Sheridan's Hit Show's Ending Prophecy
Image
Spoiler Alert for Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, "Counting Coup" and 1883

The namesake of Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, "Counting Coup," supports a prophecy embedded in Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western epic that predicts the end of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) has struggled with his fate throughout Yellowstone's five seasons, with one foot in each of his worlds. However, John Dutton III's (Kevin Costner) youngest son is determined to protect his own family, informed by Kayce's four visions in Yellowstone season 4 that set up his story in season 5.

Kayce's visions urge him to choose between the ranch and his family, and as Yellowstone season 5, part 2 progresses, Kayce clarifies his stance on the Dutton Ranch. Kayce will prioritize Tate (Brecken Merrill) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and choose the Yellowstone characters over the well-being of his family's legacy. At the end of Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, Kayce makes a chilling threat to Grant (Matt Gerald...

The Third Man │ StudioCanal

by James Cameron-wilson

I think it’s fair to say that if you poll any film critic or historian and asked them what were the five most notable films to have come out of this country last century, they would count Brief Encounter, A Matter of Life and Death, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Lawrence of Arabia and The Third Man. As such then, it is always a welcome opportunity to return to any one of the gilded quintet, particularly if they have been painstakingly restored to their former glory, as well as top-loaded with reams of informative and educational bonus material, of which the extras here are an embarrassment of riches. In short, released to celebrate the film’s 75th anniversary as part of StudioCanal’s Vintage Classics Collection, this 4K Uhd package is a gift to film buffs: the picture quality is so sharp you can...

2073 I Asif Kapadia’s dystopian drama gets new trailer and a release date
Asif Kapadia
Asif Kapadia’s future shocks drama 2073 will arrive before the year’s end, and a new trailer has arrived.

Asif Kapadia might be best known for his unforgettable documentaries but for his next project, the filmmaker is moving into less charted territory. He has directed 2073, a fictionalised dystopian thriller that made its world premiere today out of competition at the Venice Film Festival back in September.

We caught the film a month or two back, in fact, and reviewed it here.

The film stars Samantha Morton and Naomi Ackie and is said to be inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 featurette La Jetée, a film about a time traveller who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity. A first trailer arrived a couple of months ago but it has been revealed today that the film will be releasing in the UK...

Tulsa King Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Triad
Image
On Tulsa King Season 2 Episode 9, unlikely alliances and shifting loyalties set the stage for a battle against a greater threat.

Dwight Manfredi, ever the strategic thinker, partners with Bill Bevilaqua and Cal Thresher to tackle a new adversary — a move that’s as surprising as it is dangerous.

As these men come together, the cracks in their relationships deepen, and the episode takes us on a rollercoaster of trust and betrayal.

(Brian Douglas/Paramount+)

The addition of Native American allies, led by the enigmatic Old Smoke, brings another layer of complexity to this unfolding drama. Known for his deep portrayals of Native American characters, Taylor Sheridan gives the episode a distinct feel that elevates the story.

With past tensions bubbling just below the surface, it’s clear this alliance is as fragile as it is powerful, making every interaction fraught with the potential for explosive outcomes.
