John Hannah is the youngest child of his family, having two older sisters. Before he decided on a career as an actor, John was an apprentice electrician for four years. He gave up his work as an electrician after being accepted to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. After years of struggling, he finally got his 'big break' when he was cast as Matthew in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). He lives in London with his wife, Joanna Roth, and their two children.

He and his wife, <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/name/nm0744884/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Joanna Roth</a>, had twins on 11 February 2004. They had one boy and one girl, Gabriel and Astrid.

Studied for three years at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and
Drama in Glasgow.

He was considered for the part of Charlie in the TV show <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/title/tt0406942/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Lost (2004)</a>, but
the writers decided to change the characteristics of Charlie and the
role went to <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/name/nm0597480/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Dominic Monaghan</a> instead.

1995: Awarded Best Actor at the Stockholm Film Festival for <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/title/tt0113730/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Madagascar Skin (1995)</a>

He along with Brendan Fraser are the only actors to appear in all 3 films in the Mummy Trilogy 1999-2008.
