Blade Runner (1982) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
It’s funny how some of the most important and beloved movies of all time can come from stories that aren’t quite as celebrated or well read, and I’m not just talking about movies from 1982. The Thing certainly falls under that category because while Who Goes There is certifiably a great sci-fi story and there have been at least 3 movies based on it, The Thing and John Carpenter will live on far longer than Who Goes There and John W. Campbell. While that certainly doesn’t extend to all famous authors, Stephen King’s name is etched into history and 75% of his adaptations will either be forgotten or redone multiple times over, there’s also that middle ground. Phillip K. Dick has more than his fair share of adaptations out there, but his adaptations typically turn out higher profile than the author or his original works. Blade Runner...

‘So Unreal’ Trailer – Debbie Harry Narrates Cyber-Cinema Documentary
Image
A cinephile’s visual essay examining a canon of films that dared dream beyond the threshold of the real, So Unreal will be released on Blu-ray September 16 via Altered Innocence.

It explores the 20-year span between 1981 and 2001 as cinematic depictions of ‘future shock’ technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and virtual reality grew in both frequency and complexity, providing an an outlet for humanity’s intertwined anxieties, fears, and fantasies about the brave new frontiers looming ahead.

Narrated by Blondie icon Debbie Harry, director Amanda Kramer (Please Baby Please) mines the substance and subtext of cyber-minded landmarks like Tron, Videodrome, Brainstorm, Terminator 2, Tetsuo, The Lawnmower Man, Hackers, The Matrix, and dozens more.

The disc also includes Silk, Benjamin Shearn’s 2013 documentary on 100% Silk, the record label behind much of the music in So Unreal.

Special features:

Audio commentary by writer-produce-director Amanda Kramer, writer Britt Brown, editor-producer Benjamin Shearn, and...

Debbie Harry Doesn’t See Herself “Being Onstage as Blondie” Following Clem Burke’s Death
Image
Debbie Harry can’t imagine returning to the stage as Blondie following the death of drummer Clem Burke in April.

She discussed the state of Blondie and her lengthy career in a new interview with Vanity Fair. When asked what she’s been most proud of from her career so far, Harry humbly named working with Burke and fellow founding member Chris Stein — who has not toured with Blondie since 2019 due to health issues — at the top of her list.

“Keeping a rock band together for 50 years was like a marriage, and it’s sad that with Clem’s passing and without having Chris onstage, I can’t see myself being onstage as Blondie, even though I am the face of Blondie,” Harry said. “But I’m proud of the music, and I would still like to do music.”

Before Burke’s death, Blondie was in the midst of completing a new album,...

Image
Exclusive: Altered Innocence has acquired North American rights to documentary So Unreal, narrated by singer Debbie Harry.

Heralding from filmmaker Amanda Kramer (By Design), the “visual essay” explores a wave of sci-fi movies between 1981 to 2001 that reckoned with artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and virtual reality—films including Tron, Videodrome, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Hackers, The Lawnmower Man, The Matrix, and more.

The film, which features an electro soundtrack, excavates the “technophobic fantasies and digital desires that defined a generation’s fears and hopes for the future”. Festival stops have included Rotterdam, Cph: Dox, Fantastic Fest, and more.

The deal was negotiated between Altered Innocence and the filmmakers. The company plans a theatrical and home ent release this fall. International sales are handled by Yellow Veil.

Kramer’s latest film By Design, starring Juliette Lewis, debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Forgotten Movies That Made History
Image
As they get more expensive, widely seen and complicatedly filmed, movie milestones are getting hit all the time. Usually, they’re the movies you’d expect: the blockbusters that sweep all the awards and land on top 10 lists for years to come. Sometimes, though, a little nothing movie can show up, make history and leave before anyone notices.

5 Rock & Rule

1983’s Rock & Rule was notable for two things: 1) somehow snagging voice talents like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Debbie Harry; and 2) having suspiciously good animation for a low-budget Canadian cartoon. In fact, the tale of nuclear rat-like creatures using rock music to summon the forces of evil was the first animated movie to use CGI. Unfortunately, none of that helped it to recoup even a fraction of its budget at the box office.

Inside Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party With Winners, Billionaires, Rock Royalty and a Teary Jenna Ortega
Image
Oscar night is all about timing.

The challenge is getting it right. You want to be at the best party when it’s peaking (or before), planted in place while the vibes are strong and the crowd remains peppered with people holding 8.5-pound golden statues, and bolting before you’re among the final few on the dance floor in order to catch a wave to the next best thing on Hollywood’s biggest night.

Journalists, like this one, are only allowed inside a handful of Oscar night events, a fact that fortunately helps to keep a hot schedule. There’s the requisite stop at the Academy’s post-show Governors Ball, the Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing party or Vanity Fair. The more exclusive invites — Madonna and Guy Oseary’s The Party or Beyoncé and Jay Z’s Gold Party, for instance — are press free zones. The late-night bashes offer A-listers,...

Rotterdam Festival Chiefs on Cate Blanchett, Nurturing Connection With Dutch Audiences and Focus on Indonesia
Image
Now in their second year working together within the dual leadership structure of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, festival director Vanja Kaludjercic and managing director Clare Stewart are confidently looking into the future. The duo is heading into the festival’s 54th edition, taking place between Jan. 30 – Feb. 9, having just secured funding for the next four iterations and thinking of ways to deepen their connection to local audiences and their wide net of international filmmakers.

In the year and a half since being appointed, Stewart says she has “properly become a Rotterdam resident and got much more of a connection with the spirit of the city and how the festival is embedded in it.” In the last year, she and Kaludjercic have worked on a five-year strategy following the success of the 2024 edition, which the managing director says “has met all financial challenges [despite] quite a large business remodeling” that had...

Nine Rock Star Memoirs We Hope to Read One Day

Back in the Eighties and Nineties, the release of a major rock star memoir was a fairly uncommon event. Noteworthy ones like George Harrison’s I, Me, Mine (1980), Iggy Pop’s I Need More (1982), and David Lee Roth’s Crazy From the Heat (1997) popped up every once in a while, but it wasn’t until the 2000s that this genre started making regular appearances on The New York Times bestseller list, thanks to landmark works like Anthony Kiedis’ Scar Tissue, Bob Dylan’s Chronicles: Volume One, Eric Clapton’s The Autobiography,...

The new film, titled Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, will be co-directed by Oz Rodriguez, a former segment director for SNL.

Speaking about the project, Questlove said, "Everyone knows the most famous SNL appearances, whether it's Elvis Costello, Prince or the Beastie Boys, but...

Image
Grab the Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights T-Shirt. A portion of the proceeds are being donated to Lauper’s True Colors United.

Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour” is currently underway, and during Friday night’s stop in Nashville, the pop legend brought out a special guest to help sing the tour’s eponymic song: Paramore’s Hayley Williams.

That’s right, commanding the stage of Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena and donned in matching white-with-red-polka-dot outfits, Lauper and Williams brought “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” to life. Throughout the song, Williams — who delivered some masterful vocal runs on her verses — kept her gaze on Lauper, almost as if she was in just as much awe as the audience to hear the 1983 hit in its retrospective glory. Paramore Channels Blondie with iHeartRadio Performance
Image
Paramore staged their final scheduled performance of 2024 at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday night, which they styled as a tribute to Blondie’s own 1979 appearance on The Midnight Special.

Singer Hayley Williams channeled Blondie’s Debbie Harry, donning a blue dress and headband, while the stage setup embraced a distinctly retro vibe. True to their recent live performances, Paramore also slipped in a brief cover of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” during their own song “Hard Times.”

On her Instagram page, Williams shared clips of Blondie’s performance on The Midnight Special and thanked Paramore’s “entire crew for an amazing year of shows and for helping us pull off this tribute.”

Elsewhere during the set, Williams gave an impassioned plea to vote while denouncing Donald Trump’s agenda. “Project 2025 is Donald Trump’s playbook for controlling and punishing women, poor people, people of color & the LGBTQ+ community,...

Diving into the Musical Madness of 1983’s Rock Opera ‘Rock & Rule’
Image
With the release of films like Mad God and The Spine of Night (not to mention a poignant reminder by Guillermo del Toro at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony), it seems like Western audiences are one step closer to catching up with the rest of the world in realizing that animation is more than capable of telling complex, adult-oriented stories.

However, this doesn’t mean that older animated films avoided mature themes and experimental narratives – it’s just that many of these movies turned out to be huge flops, with the very best of them destined to become cult classics decades after they underperformed at the box-office. And when it comes to animated flops, there are few films more remarkable than Clive A. Smith’s beautiful disaster, 1983’s Rock & Rule. An unprecedented financial failure, this oddball rock opera would go on to entertain fans of weird cinema for decades...
