‘Ick’ Director Joseph Kahn on Returning to Filmmaking, Fighting for Creed Rights and Crafting a Modern Disaster Movie: ‘When the Monster Comes, We Don’t Get Along’
Image
What do Eminem’s “Without Me,” Lady Gaga’s “LoveGame” and Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” have in common? They all have music videos directed by Joseph Kahn, who, after a seven-year hiatus, returns to cinemas with his new creature-feature comedy “Ick,” in theaters now.

Kahn updates his Y2K swagger for a 2025 audience in his narrative comeback, which acts as a VFX-fueled meditation on nostalgia, disaster films and Gen Z’s cultural dominance. Starring Brandon Routh, Malina Pauli Weissman, Mena Suvari, Harrison Cone and Taia Sophia, “Ick” follows Hank, a high school it-boy turned high school janitor. As Hank and Eastbrook’s graduating class are consumed by visions of an unfulfilling tomorrow, they largely (and hilariously) ignore an invasive alien entity known as the Ick, which threatens to destroy their futures altogether.

Days before the wide release of “Ick” on July 27, Kahn sat down with Variety to discuss his return to feature filmmaking,...

Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari tell us all about their alien invasion horror/comedy Ick
Image
Alien invasion films seem to be having a bit of a comeback (with Spielberg even coming back to the subgenre next year), but they often follow a similar formula. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s often either the Independence Day or Invasion of the Body Snatchers approach. Joseph Kahn’s Ick instead gives us a Blob-like lifeform that has been around for decades, slowly permeating the everyday life of everyday people. It can get pretty brutal while still maintaining a fun lightness. You can check out Bumbray’s review of the film Here.

Stars Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari, Malina Pauli Weissman, and director Joseph Kahn get into the fun and difficulties of making this alien invasion horror/comedy. Routh was a bit more reserved, discussing the big differences between his time in the Superhero world and the world of horror. Mena gets into the fun...

Ick Director Joseph Kahn On His Wild New Horror Comedy, Power/Rangers 10 Years Later, & More (Exclusive)
Image
With Ick hitting theaters this weekend, we recently caught up with director Joseph Kahn (Bodied; Torque) to talk about his latest monster movie that blends classic creature-feature thrills with a modern twist.

In the film, Kahn explores the chaos unleashed by a mysterious entity known as the Ick. The synopsis reads, "For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as “The Ick” has benignly crept into every nook and cranny of American life while the residents of small town Eastbrook remain blasé about its existence. The exceptions are former high school football star-turned-hapless science teacher Hank and his sardonically perceptive student Grace who are thrown together by Grace’s mom Staci’s closely-guarded secret and a mutual suspicion that the Ick is about to unleash some monstrous mayhem."

Talking with Kahn, he shared insights about his inspirations (including Spielberg classics like Jaws and Jurassic Park), the challenges of...

Sdcc Highlights: Nothing Beats Brandon Routh Ditching Superman For a Spider-Man Costume
Image
Brandon Routh is widely recognized as one of the best versions of live-action Superman, and he deserves every bit of that praise. But wait, what if he ditched the Man of Steel to become Spider-Man? Sounds unbelievable, yes, but that’s exactly what he did at the recently held San Diego Comic Con (Sdcc) 2025.

As can be seen in the videos currently making rounds on the internet, the superhero from Superman Returns really left pretty much everyone’s mouth hanging wide open when he took the stage during the All-American Rejects’ set while clad, neck to toe, in the web-slinger’s red and blue costume (via @getFANDOM on X).

But as attention-grabbing as that was, that move was followed by the actor going on to promote his upcoming horror-sci-fi, Ick.

A Classic 26-Year-Old Comedy (That Gen Z Finds 'Deeply Problematic') Is Heading to Netflix
Image
In 1999, teenagers came out in droves to see American Pie. Now, almost 30 years later, the comedy classic and its equally funny sequel, American Pie 2, are heading to Netflix.

Beginning Aug. 1, American Pie and American Pie 2 will be available to stream on Netflix. The coming-of-age sex comedy follows a group of teenagers — Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs), Chris "Oz" Ostreicher (Chris Klein), Kevin Myers (Thomas Ian Nicholas), and Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) — who make a pact to lose their virginity before they graduate high school. Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Owen, Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Mena Suvari, and Shannon Elizabeth co-star as their classmates, while comedy icons Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge play Biggs and Scott's characters' respective parents.

At the time of its release, American Pie received mostly positive reviews, with many critics calling it a well-done modern update to the teen sex comedy genre. However, as...

'Superman' Star Brandon Routh Reveals His Emotional Reaction to James Gunn's Reboot
Image
One of the former actors honored with bringing the Man of Steel to live-action life in the past has broken his silence about the new version of Superman by James Gunn. Brandon Routh, most famous for portraying the iconic superhero in the 2006 feature film Superman Returns, has now declared his support for the film, with the actor having a surprisingly emotional reaction to the Dcu reboot.

Back in 2006, Routh was responsible for breathing new life into the character who had stayed dormant (at least in the feature film format) for decades. Superman Returns was one of the actor's first movies, and though it had a decent reception from critics and audiences, Warner Bros. felt that it just wasn't enough to warrant a franchise. Routh had no choice but to redirect his career outside the superhero genre. Nonetheless, he has shown nothing but support for the 2025 reboot, saying, "It was a lot of fun,...

Ick Review: Joseph Kahn’s Riotous, Satirical Take on the Creature Feature
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2024 TIFF coverage. Ick opens in theaters on July 24.

The world is ending and nobody cares in Ick, Joseph Kahn’s latest genre offering after 2017’s Bodied and 2011’s Detention. Despite only making four features in 20 years, Kahn is ubiquitous in pop culture from his background in directing music videos for major artists like Britney Spears and Taylor Swift. He also directed 2004’s Torque, a film received so disastrously even he pokes fun at it. That might explain why, after making one studio film, he’s directed all of his following films independently––including Ick, a riotous take on the creature feature and a scathing satire of society’s apathetic attitude in the face of existential threats.

It takes almost no time to see that Ick is very much Kahn’s own creation. This film runs rampant without a single studio note.

Brandon Routh on ‘Ick’ and Why David Corenswet Is a ‘Fantastic’ Superman: ‘I Cried No Less Than Three Times’
Image
When James Gunn’s “Superman” was released earlier this month, former Man of Steel Brandon Routh cheered its arrival on Instagram.

A July 12 post featuring a trailer for the movie was accompanied by Routh’s message, “Go see #Superman in theaters now!”

He also wrote, “Seeing it soon! But at @fanboy_expo in Nashville— talking to all the amazing Superman fans who have seen it already, and we are very excited to see it soon! Same as me!”

Routh, who starred as the DC superhero in 2006’s “Superman Returns,” tells me he has now seen the movie.

“It was a lot of fun,” he said Monday while promoting his new sci-fi horror comedy, “Ick.” “I really enjoyed it. I think David [Corenswet] is fantastic. I cried no less than three times.

“I see this in a different way. I come at it from a different perspective,” Routh added. “I really got...

View terrifying found footage in the trailer for Strange Harvest
Image
Saban Films and Roadside Attractions have just released the trailer for the chilling new found footage horror film Strange Harvest. The movie comes from writer-director Stuart Ortiz, who is known for Grave Encounters. Strange Harvest is a hauntingly grounded thriller that introduces “Mr. Shiny,” a serial killer at the center of a terrifying and otherworldly mystery. The movie uses various methods of voyeuristic point-of-views in a twist on the usual found footage formula as we see the action through webcams, news outlets and body cams.

The official synopsis for Strange Harvest from Saban and Roadside Attractions reads,

“Detectives are thrust into a chilling hunt for “Mr. Shiny”—a sadistic serial killer from the past whose return marks the beginning of a new wave of grotesque, otherworldly crimes tied to a dark cosmic force.” The movie stars Peter Zizzo, Terri Apple, Andy Lauer, Matthew Peschio, Janna Cardia, Travis Wolfe Sr. and Christina Helene Braa.

Joseph Kahn in Detention (2011)
Ick trailer: Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari creature feature is coming to theatres in July
Joseph Kahn in Detention (2011)
Joseph Kahn primarily works as a music video director, having collaborated with the likes of Taylor Swift, Backstreet Boys, Rob Zombie, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, U2, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Eminem, Maroon 5, Shakira, and many more – but he has also made a few feature films over the years. He made his feature debut with the 2004 action comedy Torque, and has followed that up with the comedy Bodied and the horror film Detention – which we’ve covered for both Awfully Good and Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. His latest movie is a creature feature called Ick, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see it at the Toronto International Film Festival last year (you can read his 7/10 review at This Link). Brandon Routh’s “Best work since Superman”, Ick: What to Expect From This Horror Comedy of the DC Superstar
Image
Brandon Routh donned the iconic red cape in 2006 when he took over the role of Superman in Superman Returns. With his quiet intensity and humble charm, his version of the Man of Steel quickly became one of the most memorable in character history. While his name often gets forgotten amidst actors like Henry Cavill and Christopher Reeve, we cannot forget his contribution to the superhero genre.

Superman Returns is still known as one of Brandon Routh’s best works, if not the best. However, it looks like things might change for the actor, especially with the upcoming release of his throwback horror film, Ick.

Fun Trailer for Joseph Kahn's PG-13 Horror 'Ick' with Brandon Routh
Image
"Our kids can still go to prom tomorrow, right?" Uh, no. Fathom has revealed an official trailer for a horror comedy movie called Ick, the latest fun movie from music video director Joseph Kahn. This one played on the genre festival circuit last fall - it premiered at TIFF in Midnight Madness then played at Fantastic Fest, Sitges, and Screamfest. Science teacher Hank's life changes when he reconnects with his first love and suspects a new student is his daughter, all while facing an alien threat in their town. The movie is about a weird substance called "The Ick" that has been growing all over America (an obvious metaphor). But it's getting worse and suddenly will start taking over, unless this teacher and his smart student can figure out how to stop it. "A wild ride driven by a power punk spirit, Ick is a dizzyingly fun & hilariously grotesque homage to throwback PG horror flicks,...

Superman Actor Brandon Routh Stars in New Trailer for Horror Comedy 'Ick'
Image
A fan-favorite Superman actor is throwing it back to the 2000s in a new horror comedy that contains a power so evil it's certain to gross out and turn off audiences. Brandon Routh, the actor who brought the Man of Steel into the 21st century on the big screen in the 2006 movie Superman Returns, is back and better than ever in Ick. A new trailer has just been released that perfectly encapsulates Detention director Joseph Kahn's pulpy period piece creature feature coming to theaters this July.

Ick isn't about your date picking their nose or even saying creepy one-liners to the waitress. No, this ick is much more literal. In the upcoming horror comedy, starring Routh, Malina Weissman (Violet in Netflix's iconic A Series of Unfortunate Events), and Mena Suvari, "a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as 'The Ick' has benignly crept into every nook and cranny...

American Pie 2 comes to 4K and American Reunion gets a new Blu-ray release
Image
Good news for American Pie fans. Two sequels from the theatrically released entries will be getting new physical media releases. The bad news is that these particular releases are from a British distributor, and the normal Blu-rays are Region B. However, American Pie 2 will get an Ultra-hd 4K remastering on a region-free Blu-ray so North American consumers can enjoy it as well. According to Blu-ray.com, 88 Films is releasing the first sequel and the last sequel to the 1999 teen virginity comedy. Both Blu-rays are due to hit retailers in June.

The description for American Pie 2 reads,

“The characters you love are back! One year after the prom-night misadventures immortalized in American Pie, the entire gang has reunited for the summer. Now, an innocent-looking beach house will be transformed into the ultimate party-central. Five guys will discover the powerful bonds of friendship… and Super Glue. Natasha Lyonne Almost Forgot ‘Poker Face’s John Cho Was In ‘American Pie’: “I Haven’t Seen Those”

Natasha Lyonne is back on the road for Season 2 of Poker Face, and she brought a few old friends along for the ride.

While discussing the star-studded guest roster of the Peacock show’s sophomore season, the first three episodes available to stream May 8, the actress admitted to Deadline that she wasn’t entirely sure if she’d previously worked with ‘The Sleazy Georgian’ actor John Cho.

“I think that he’s maybe in some of the American Pies,” she said. “I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen those. I did see the first one at the premiere. I do love Chris and Paul Weitz. I do talk a lot of shit about that movie, it’s mostly just because I don’t understand high school or proms or suburbia.”

Despite having only seen the first American Pie (1999), Lyonne played the sarcastic Jessica in the teen film and its...

Charles Chaplin
Finding Beauty in the Absurd: An Existential Reading of ‘American Beauty’ (1999)
Charles Chaplin
Is life a comedy or a tragedy? Artists from all over the world try to find the right answers to this age-old question. Kafka sees life as endless suffering, whereas Charlie Chaplin sees life as harsh and tries to create a good laugh about it. The question perhaps starts from the ‘fall of man,’ where Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden and exiled to Earth. Due to this, human life is perhaps inherently a tragic one—a life filled with suffering and sorrow. In season 1 of “True Detective,” the character Rust Cohle identifies it as the ‘tragic misstep in evolution.’ According to him, “We are creatures that should not exist, by natural law.”

But there may be something beautiful about this existence—an existence where we are able to be happy, but in absurd terms, just like Sisyphus in Greek mythology, who was eternally damned to...

Hollywood drama alert! The cast of the 1997 crime thriller L.A. Confidential is making headlines again, but not for a reunion. It all started after Guy Pearce recently tore up while recalling his disgraced co-star Kevin Spacey’s troubling behavior on set. Thereafter, actress Kim Basinger just dropped a surprising take on Pearce’s claims.

While Guy Pearce hinted at having a rough time with the Oscar-winning actor who allegedly targeted him, Kim Basinger appeared to maintain her distance from the controversy. Saying that she can neither deny nor corroborate Pearce’s remarks, the actress seemed to avoid the whole drama by simply stating that she doesn’t really know Kevin Spacey.

When Mena Suvari Opened Up About Her Unusual Experience With Kevin Spacey While Filming “American Beauty”
Image
American Beauty stirred a lot of debate when it hit screens in 1999. Directed by Sam Mendes, the film explores complex and often uncomfortable themes. Mena Suvari played Angela Hayes, a confident yet shallow teenager who catches the attention of Lester Burnham, a man in the throes of a midlife crisis, portrayed by Kevin Spacey. Angela is the 17-year-old best friend of Lester’s daughter, making the situation even more unsettling.

Over the years, Spacey himself has been embroiled in controversies following accusations of abuse. Interestingly, Suvari once opened up about her own discomfort while working on the film, which remains a topic of discussion when revisiting the movie’s themes and its troubled legacy.

Ick Review: Slime, Satire, and Suburban Apocalypse
Image
In the wild world of horror-comedy, Joseph Kahn’s “Ick” emerges as a gonzo fever dream, combining the alien invasion genre with 2000s Nostalgia, social satire, and pure cinematic mayhem. Set in the seemingly peaceful town of Eastbrook, the film follows Hank Wallace, a former high school football star whose aspirations of NFL greatness were dashed by an injury and the strange advent of a peculiar alien slime known simply as “the Ick.”

Hank, now a physics teacher at his alma mater, is tormented by his past and increasingly preoccupied with the odd chemical slowly spreading across the United States for the past 20 years. Brandon Routh provides a great blend of square-jawed heroics and self-deprecating comedy to the role, channeling the spirit of Bruce Campbell from “Evil Dead” while drawing on his own Hollywood path from Superman to this deliriously crazy character.

Hank’s attempts to understand and overcome the Ick,...

Stars: Brandon Routh, Malina Weissman, Harrison Cone, Debra Wilson, Diya Rao, Taia Sophia, Zeke Donovan Jones, Jeff Fahey, Mena Suvari, Peter Wong | Written by Joseph Kahn, Dan Koontz, Samuel Laskey | Directed by Joseph Kahn

Former Superman Brandon Routh stars in this smalltown horror flick from director Joseph Kahn that fondly recalls genre classics such as The Blob (1958) and The Stuff (1985). Directed by Joseph Kahn (Detention), who co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Koontz and Samuel Laskey, Ick is an enjoyably gloopy, blackly comic alien invasion thriller, anchored by a likeable lead performance from Routh.

Set in the small town of Eastbrook, Ick begins in the year 2000, where high school football star Hank Wallace (Routh) has his promising career cut short when he trips over a black plant-like substance on the field, injuring his leg. Ick Review: Brandon Routh Charms in a Genre-Bending Blast
Image
It's been seven years since Joseph Kahn released his last film, Bodied, a provocative dark comedy about a liberal white kid who unwittingly becomes a legitimate battle-rap competitor. With its irreverent take on woke culture and identity politics and its gleeful demolition of boundaries, Bodied felt years ahead of its time. Kahn's new film, Ick, feels somewhat timeless despite being clearly influenced by the early 2000s era of MTV where Kahn made a name for himself as the director of iconic music videos like Britney Spears' "Toxic" and Eminem's "Without Me."

Ick stars Brandon Routh as Hank Wallace, your typical high-school football quarterback who dreams of escaping his small town and joining the big league, with his beautiful cheerleader girlfriend Staci (an aptly cast Mena Suvari) at his side. Hank's life comes screeching to a halt when he suffers a career-ending injury on the field caused by a...
