Accidental Texan Review: An Easily Forgettable Small-Town Dramedy That's Lacking Excitement
Image
A star-stacked cast fails to rescue a dull script in Accidental Texan, based on the novel Chocolate Lizards. The predictable plot and forced pathos overshadow the endearing friendship between Erwin and Merle in the movie. The lack of excitement and forgettable conflict make Accidental Texan an easily overlooked movie.

Accidental Texan features impressive names — Rudy Pankow as Erwin Vandeveer, Thomas Haden Church as Merle Luskey, Carrie-Anne Moss as Faye, and Bruce Dern as Scheermeyer — but the star-studded cast isn't enough to bring life to the movie's dull script. The comedy-drama, directed by Mark Lambert Bristol and written by Julie B. Denny, is based on Cole Thompson's 1999 novel Chocolate Lizards. The film, which premiered at the Dallas International Film Festival in April 2023, tells the story of a city boy who unexpectedly ends up in a small Texas town following a series of unfortunate events.

Rudy Pankow & Carrie-Anne Moss in Comedy 'Accidental Texan' Trailer
Image
"This acting, this was always your dream?" Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Accidental Texan, made by storyboard artist / filmmaker Mark Lambert Bristol. Obviously enough, this originally premiered at the 2023 Dallas Film Festival last year, with a stop at the Heartland Film Festival in Indiana as well. The film is adapted from a novel called "Chocolate Lizards", which was the original title for this before they changed it to Accidental Texan. Fresh-faced actor Erwin finds himself stranded in Texas after a film shoot gone wrong, where he's taken under the wing of a nearly bankrupt oil driller. They set off on a wild Texas adventure to outwit a corrupt oil company to hit pay dirt before Merle's dreams are foreclosed, partnering with a kind waitress along the way. The ensemble cast features Rudy Pankow as Erwin, Carrie-Anne Moss as Faye, Thomas Haden Church as Merle,...

Johnny Hardwick, King of the Hill's Dale Gribble, Dead at 64
Mike Judge in King of the Hill (1997)
Johnny Hardwick, best known for voicing Dale Gribble on the hit Fox animated series King of the Hill, has died.

He was 64.

TMZ reports the actor died Tuesday.

Officers were reportedly called to his Texas home for a welfare check and discovered his body.

The outlet states that Hardwick was pronounced dead at the scene.

A cause of death has not been revealed, but TMZ states that no foul play is suspected.

Hardwick played the conspiracy-minded Gribble on the Fox series from its 1997 debut until its 2010 series finale.

In addition to his work on King of the Hill, Hardwick was well-known for being a stand-up comic.

He appeared on The Jon Stewart Show.

A big success for Fox, King of the Hill was confirmed to be getting the revival treatment earlier this year.

Mary-Louise Parker, Carrie-Anne Moss, Isabelle Fuhrman & Liana Liberato Set For Justine Bateman’s Film ‘Face’ Based On Her Bestseller
Image
Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.

The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.

Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

Terrence Malick in The Thin Red Line (1998)
Terrence Malick: ‘The Tree of Life’ Storyboards Reveal Cain & Abel Scenes; Actors Talk Upcoming Films
Terrence Malick in The Thin Red Line (1998)
Awards and top ten lists and all of that be damned: months after its release people are still talking about Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, and with good reason. Dispute the effectiveness of the bookending Sean Penn sequences, sure, but the core of the movie is a powerful family story that works precisely because of Malick's characteristic approach. The film has that small, solid family center, but also has much bigger things at the fringes, and recently released storyboards clue us in to plans that would have put another layer of narrative into The Tree of Life. The boards show a sequence featuring Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel -- a story that could have either provided more thematic weight for the film, or bogged it down with a too-obvious layer of allegory. Likely the latter, given that the scenes didn't end up in the film, and may not have even been shot.

Illustrations of Abandoned ‘Tree of Life’ Sequences Appear; Ofcs Crowns Film With Top Honor
No matter your individual opinion on The Tree of Life, we’re probably all in general agreement that the thing’s ambitious. Some (well, many) would even say too much so for its own good; those with that viewpoint will probably cringe at news from ThePlaylist, as they caught wind of storyboard artist Mark Bristol posting some work for scrapped scenes on his website. Not because there are more dinosaurs, either. The nature of these pieces actually expand the film’s scope even further — possibly to a point that even I would’ve found too massive.

There were, as illustrated below, not only plans to show humans in their tribal, primate-like form, but also to depict Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, and Seth. Now, anyone with the most basic understanding of their tale will immediately form connections between Cain and Abel & the lead character Jack’s relationship with his brother, Steve.

Storyboards From 'The Tree Of Life' Reveal Abandoned Early Life Sequence With Adam, Eve, Cain & Abel, Plus Photos From Missing Scenes In The Film
It was quite a 2011 for Terrence Malick. Not only did the director return with his long awaited, Palme d'Or winning "The Tree Of Life," he's got four films in various stages of development including the IMAX documentary "Voyage Of Time," the untitled Ben Affleck/Rachel McAdams romance and two pictures set to shoot this year, "Lawless" and "Knight Of Cups." And yet, with all that going on, people are still talking about "The Tree Of Life" (which has placed on many year end, Best Of lists) and it's not hard to see why. The ambitious film's extended creation and early life sequence is still one of the most discussed of last year, and as you might expect, there was even more that was eventually abandoned by the director in the decades long development of the project. Storyboard artist Mark Bristol has posted a handful of storyboards and concept art from...

Rip David Carradine
The Associated Press has reported that actor David Carradine was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Bangkok, an apparent suicide. Carradine, who was in the Thai city to shoot a movie, was 72.

The actor was discovered by a hotel maid hanged with a curtain cord, and a preliminary police investigation found no signs of foul play. Further details are being withheld out of consideration for his family. Carradine’s long career ranged from the art house to the grindhouse and everything in between, with horror credits including Larry Cohen’s Q, Gary Graver’s Trick Or Treats, Robert Martin Carroll’s Sonny Boy, Anthony Hickox’s Sundown: The Vampire In Retreat (pictured) and Waxwork II: Lost In Time, Fred Olen Ray’s Evil Toons, Ethan Wiley’s Children Of The Corn V: Fields Of Terror, Mitch Marcus’ Knocking On Death’S Door, Mark Lambert Bristol’s The Monster Hunter,...
