While The Young and the Restless is never short on drama, the Aristotle Dumas plot adds a murder mystery twist to proceedings and threatens even the show’s most central characters as a result. This week on The Young and the Restless, the unseen killer who murdered Damian Kane seems set to be revealed.
However, this doesn’t mean that The Young and the Restless’ Aristotle Dumas scheme won’t claim more victims before the plot wraps up. Cane Ashby’s enigmatic alter ego wasn’t the one who stabbed Damian in the back, but his ex-wife Lily still blames him for putting everyone in harm’s way by setting up an elaborate getaway at his remote French country estate.
Head Writer and Executive Producer Josh Griffith told SoapOperaDigest that a famous mystery novel inspired this plot:

Exclusive: A mysterious society of famous crime writers whose members included Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and G.K. Chesterton is about to become far less mysterious.
Deadline can reveal that iconic authors like Christie and Sayers are to be brought to life in a TV series titled The Detection Club from the BBC and BritBox International.
Produced by BBC Studios Drama Productions, the show is understood to be taking a ‘mystery-of-the-week’ style approach with fictional versions of Christie, Sayers and Chesterton set as the main characters solving crimes each episode. We are told locations in the UK’s West Midlands region are currently being scouted with a view to shooting next summer.
Formed nearly 100 years ago, the elusive and exclusive Detection Club met regularly as its members dined and helped each other with technical aspects of their writing. As well as meeting, they also adhered to Knox’s Commandments, which...

Genre cinema can be incredibly transgressive. Like termite art, they mutely chew on the boundaries of conformation. In horror, courtroom drama, noir, murder mysteries, and many more, the director is paramount for these films. How they treat it saves a good genre film from being generic, which most certainly holds true for murder mysteries. Plots in these films are like the foundation, invisible, and pretty similar in nature. However, the material used to construct the building on this foundation is the treatment. The foundation can and should be strong enough to hold the building, but what the audience would buy is the building.
The functionality of atmosphere, mood, pace, suspense, cinematography, lighting, and brain-teasing tension plays a much larger part in a murder mystery. Without these, we just have a story where we’re waiting for the big reveal. More often than not, the lack of slick treatment gives us a generic mystery.

Director Rian Johnson is known for making one of the most disliked Star Wars movies. However, the filmmaker is also behind one of the best sci-fi movies to feature Bruce Willis. Looper is Johnson’s 2012 sci-fi thriller starring Willis that is widely considered one of the best time travel movies.
Given how notoriously difficult the concept is to nail, it is no surprise that Johnson’s take resulted in one of the best movies in Willis’ career. Here is why Looper nailed time travel and why the sci-fi movie is worth revisiting after Johnson announced his next project.
Rian Johnson’s Looper Nailed Time Travel With One Creative Choice
Directed by Rian Johnson, Looper was released in 2012, emerging as a critical and commercial success, grossing $176.5 million against a $30 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). It also currently holds a critics’ score of 93% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

This article contains major spoilers for "I Know What You Did Last Summer" 2025.
1997's "I Know What You Did Last Summer," along with the series of films (and TV show) that followed it, is generally regarded as a slasher. More specifically, it's a whodunit slasher, the type that carries on the tradition of murder mysteries made famous by Agatha Christie as much as they revel in staging kill scenes. This type of slasher tends to tone down the element of the supernatural as seen in something like John Carpenter's "Halloween," which contains a lot of mysterious goings-on involving its masked killer that can't be easily explained or rationalized. This tone for "Ikwydls" was established in large part by Lois Duncan's 1973 novel of the same name, but "Ikwydls" screenwriter Kevin Williamson reworked the murder mystery into a more true-to-form slasher, much to Duncan's chagrin.

The anticipated legacy sequel to 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer finally arrives in theaters on July 18, and the reviews are trickling in. So was the follow-up feature worth the wait? On Rotten Tomatoes, 2025's I Know What You Did Last Summercurrently holds a 46% rating from 46 reviews, indicating that it is, at best, a mixed bag. The new slasher stars Madelyn Cline as Danica Richards, Chase Sui Wonders as Ava Brucks, and Jonah Hauer-King as Milo Griffin, among others, and welcomes back Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. to reprise their roles.
The original I Know What You Did Last Summer also didn't impress critics. While it was a commercial success that topped the US box office for three consecutive weeks, it holds just a 45% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Over time, however, it has become a cult classic.

“So here we are, it’s 1997 all over again,” one of the characters says tellingly in I Know What You Did Last Summer. That line, of course, is not from the original film in the series but rather its same-titled “legacy sequel,” which, if you’re not familiar with Hollywood parlance, basically means “Let’s see if we can squeeze more dollars out of this sucker.” Slavishly reminiscent of its predecessors, the film also features so many Easter eggs that it mainly serves as canned nostalgia.
Those throwbacks, ironically, are the most fun aspect of this new installment, which is unlikely to garner the same sort of cult following as the 1997 original. The concept remains the same, with a group of extremely good-looking young people (here in their mid-20s rather than teen years) covering up a violent death for which they were responsible. Cut to a year later, when...

With his new show “Bookish,” Mark Gatiss hasn’t tired of coming up with ways to kill people. “Sherlock Holmes himself said, ‘There’s nothing new under the sun,’” says the Emmy-winning co-creator/star of “Sherlock,” adding, “It’s a constant challenge because you’re trying to think how you can surprise people and what hasn’t already been done.”
A murder mystery aficionado (he’s currently fighting the temptation to purchase the prop newspaper used in the 1974 film “Murder on the Orient Express”), Gatiss is both impressed and indebted to the work of Agatha Christie. “She came up with every kind of possibility for who could have done it, and she got there first, damn her,” he notes. “That’s what you’re always looking for — new ways to surprise people.” He also knows that “audiences are students of the genre,” which makes it even more challenging. It’s why while making “Sherlock,...

For his third Knives Out story, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery director Rian Johnson prefers to continue switching things up.
In an interview with Rolling Stone TV critic Alan Sepinwall, Johnson discussed his work on Poker Face, Star Wars, and the Knives Out franchise, noting how fluid the tone of detective Benoit Blanc's adventures can get from sequel to sequel.
This ability to shift moods reflects an eagerness to give his audience a different experience per case, admitting, "If I feel like I'm repeating the same thing, or turning the crank on the handle and turning out more of what I did last time, I'm not good enough to hide that from the audience. So what I end up chasing is the experience of each of these things. It's not necessarily where I'm going to flip and do a totally different tone, but after three years...

Wake Up Dead Man is the latest movie in the Knives Out series, and the director of the franchise has just revealed how the upcoming film is different from the previous one, Glass Onion. While Knives Out was universally beloved, Glass Onion was a lot more divisive, causing many fans to wonder how the franchise would approach the next entry, Wake Up Dead Man.
Knives Out trilogy director Rian Johnson has discussed Wake Up Dead Man following the release of its teaser trailer, with him saying that the film is "incredibly different from Glass Onion" (via Rolling Stone). Johnson explains that the upcoming sequel is "much more a Gothic" and that the tone is "much more grounded."

Rian Johnson says the third Benoit Blanc mystery, “Wake Up Dead Man,” will tilt toward “a very grounded Gothic vibe,” arguing that each installment must feel “like its own novel on the shelf” rather than a standard sequel.
The writer-director offered the tease while confirming that he has already begun outlining a potential fourth film, even though his $469 million Netflix pact formally ends with this entry. He compared the process to Agatha Christie’s Poirot era, noting that detective stories thrive on reinvention.
Production on “Wake Up Dead Man” wrapped in London last summer, giving Johnson fifteen months for editing and scoring ahead of Netflix’s planned 12 December 2025 release. Festival programmers have already booked the picture to open this year’s BFI London Film Festival on 8 October, positioning it for an awards-season launch similar to predecessor “Glass Onion.”

After a string of box-office successes in the 2000s, it only made sense for television to jump on the horror bandwagon. For every rare hit, though, there were multiple misfires that, for some reason or another, didn’t make it beyond a single season. Harper’s Island was, unfortunately, one of these casualties.
This horror drama had opened with strong numbers in the spring of 2009, then once the ratings declined, its remaining episodes were burned off until the network finally dropped the axe. And although the swift cancellation came as no huge surprise, Harper’s Island’s loyal watchers mourned what might have been, had the series been given more time to grow, a better timeslot, and the chance to find a proper audience. Back in 2010, just before his career imploded because of the critical and commercial failure of The Last Airbender, director M. Night Shyamalanwas signed by Universal to creatively oversee and produce a trilogy of standalone horror movies. The series would be called The Night Chronicles. Think of it as the proto-Dark Universe, also orchestrated by Universal. The Night Chronicles was quietly canceled after just one release, the modestly successful chamber piece Devil. The movie grossed over $60 million worldwide against a reported budget of $10 million, and would've likely made even more had it been released now. But now is the time to shine for 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle's long-awaited zombie thriller, which has now grossed around twice as much as Devil.
Having played in theaters for almost a month, 28 Years Later has generated nearly $130 million globally. The movie opened to positive reviews — it holds a strong 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes...

The third entry in Rian Johnson’s crime mystery series will be released later this year. Previously, Johnson said Wake Up Dead Man would be “very, very different” from the last entry, Glass Onion. He explained, “The goal is to strike out in a completely new direction tonally and thematically.” He also posted the following on social media: “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from John Dickson Carr to Agatha Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies.”

One such jewel that doesn't get out much is the Tiffany Yellow Diamond. Compared to some of the most expensive diamonds on the planet, it's a relative snip at around $30 million, but don't go raiding your piggy bank just yet. As a lustrous emblem of the Tiffany & Co. empire, it's unlikely it will be sold in the foreseeable future, and it isn't the kind of trinket that the legendary jewelers will let just anybody try on. To date, only four women have had the honor of wearing the gem since it was first unearthed in 1877. More recently, however, the fabulous stone has played a key part in Kenneth Branagh's "Death on the Nile,...

The 1974 film "Murder on the Orient Express" was the first film adaptation of Agatha Christie's beloved 1934 novel of the same name, and it was also perhaps the best of them. The movie earned more than 10 times its budget at the box office, and in the years since, it's become the gold standard for Christie film adaptations. It seemed like nobody had a bad thing to say about the movie, except, of course, for Agatha Christie herself.
"It was well made except for one mistake," Christie reportedly said. "It was Albert Finney as my detective Hercule Poirot. I wrote that he had the finest mustache in England — and he didn't in the film. I thought that a pity — why shouldn't he have the best mustache?"
Looking back, it's hard to argue with this critique. Finney's mustache in this movie is respectable, sure, but it is not impressive enough to stick out to the average viewer,...

2025 hasn't exactly been filled with new horror TV shows yet, but with the upcoming Alien: Earth series and the release of It: Welcome to Derry, the genre promises to thrive on the small screen in the latter half of the year. Set in the fictional Cold River Motel, the show follows 10 true crime obsessives who are invited to the opening weekend of the newly renovated setting, which is also the site of a 30-year-old unsolved Satanic Mass Murder. Mistry, a Jio HotStar series in the news for all the wrong reasons, is a pale shadow of the original American series Monk about a detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) with obsessive–compulsive disorder. Given an Indian context, the series, more than its protagonist , suffers from some sort of a disorder.
The trick of making the quirky detective work is to not allow him to take himself serious, This, Tony Shalhoub achieved with minimum strenuousness in the original. Monk in Mistry transforms into Armaan Mistry. Sixty-six miles might not sound like a long road trip, but in 1888, Bertha Benz’s drive from Mannheim to Pforzheim in Germany was a historic journey. Bertha, the wife of automobile inventor Karl Benz, made the first long-distance drive in history, back when the vehicle was still a prototype, and the roads were barely there, and such a voyage was a revolution.
That journey is the subject of Singer Studios’ virtual-reality (VR) experience “Trailblazer: The Untold Story of Bertha Benz,” directed by Eloise Singer, who wrote the project with Jedidjah Noomen, and narrated by Daisy Ridley. The immersive project became available for users to try for themselves this past May via Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3, after playing at the Venice, Cannes, and SXSW film festivals, among others. “Trailblazer” is now a contender in the Outstanding Emerging Media Program category at the Primetime Emmys; Singer’s “The Pirate Queen,” starring Lucy Liu,...

Agatha Christie in on record speaking about how much she tended to dislike film and TV adaptations of her own work. Generally speaking, she hated the tendency filmmakers had toward making her murder mysteries into whimsical, comedic farces. Christie had some especially harsh words for actress Margaret Rutherford, who played a slapstick version of Miss Marple in three Christie-based films in the 1960s. The author was even barred (by her friends) from watching certain adaptations, as they would most certainly have elicited months of complaints. This is one of the main reasons actor David Suchet took the role of Hercule Poirot so seriously for the celebrated BBC series "Agatha Christie's Poirot" from 1989.
Of course, Christie's murder mysteries were so naturally cinematic, that filmmakers were drawn to them repeatedly during the author's decades-long writing career. The very first film adaptation of...

From Agatha Christie obsessions to critically acclaimed crime dramas, some of the best content from across the pond is available to stream in the US on BritBox. Perhaps the most exciting new addition to the streamer's line-up is the six-episode series, Outrageous, the latest in a long line of adaptations based on the notorious Mitford sisters. Following in the footsteps of the Amazon miniseries, The Pursuit of Love, which detailed the eldest sister's novels, Outrageous, co-directed by Joss Agnew and Ellie Heydon, takes the infamous raucous stories and gives them a modern refresh with gorgeous color design and a provocative edge.
The series, which features a selection of top performers, including the likes of Bridgerton's Bessie Carter, James Purefoy (The Following), Isobel Jesper Jones (The Serpent Queen), Joanna Vanderham (The Runaway), Shannon Watson (The Jetty), Zoe Brough, and more, released on BritBox just two days ago and is already impressing both audiences and critics.

Sam Spector's life would never be the same after Alan Cumming referred to himself as "a less butch Agatha Christie in a fabulous outfit" in the first season of The Traitors. All of a sudden, Cumming's wardrobe became a character of its own, and for some fans, seeing what the host wears next is even more important than finding out who'll be banished from the castle.
The costume designer is responsible for bringing the flair to a reality TV show that often delves into dark themes like murder and betrayal. Renowned for his gender-fluid designs and fun approach to blending historical references with a modern eye, Spector is the mastermind behind Cumming's ever-changing wardrobe. He recently took a break from filming Season 4 in Scotland to talk to Gold Derby about his five favorite looks from Season 3, including the "campy glam" turquoise armor and the "showstopper" wedding tuxedo dress.

BritBox is delving back into the world of Agatha Christie, but this time without the guiding hand of Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple’s keen eye. Instead, the streamer is turning its attention to Tommy & Tuppence, bringing the escapades of the dynamic and dashing detective duo to life in a new six-part contemporary drama series. Written by Phoebe Eclair-Powell, the series follows a married couple who appear in several of Christie’s novels and short stories, taking up detective work for both fun and profit. What sets the couple apart from other Christie protagonists is their ability to age, as the characters are seen in their early 20s when first introduced and age into their 70s in the later novels. “Christie’s detective duo are witty, sharp, and raring to solve lots and lots of murders whilst asking if they should really be more than just Partners in Crime… To...

BritBox is bringing two more of Agatha Christie's iconic detectives to life with a twist. The streaming service has just greenlit a new six-episode miniseries centering on the crime-solving couple Tommy & Tuppence, but it'll unfold entirely in the modern day. It marks the first contemporary English-language television series adaptation of Christie's stories of the pair, and it also stands as the first television drama series commissioned for playwright Phoebe Eclair-Powell. Casting is still being finalized, but filming is set to get underway later this year with Happy Valley producer Lookout Point at the helm in association with Agatha Christie Limited.
Tommy & Tuppence Beresford first appeared in The Secret Adversary, Christie's second published detective novel from 1922, and they would continue to be some of her go-to sleuths throughout her career. In total, the couple appears in five of the legendary novelist's books, including four longer stories and a collection of short tales.

In 1920, much-adapted mystery author Agatha Christie debuted Hercule Poirot in the novel "The Mysterious Affair at Styles." Poirot was introduced as a Belgian private detective, a short man with an immaculately groomed mustache and a metric ton of dignity. He solved the toughest murder cases for his friends, colleagues, and employers, giving Sherlock Holmes and Batman alike a run for "world's greatest detective."
Since then, Poirot has become one of the most iconic and influential cultural characters; without Poirot, there is no Columbo, no Dr. House, no Benoit Blanc, and no understanding of the idea of the "gentleman sleuth." Poirot's impact invariably led to screen adaptations for film, television, video game, and even anime.
If you're a fan of the French-accented detective, or love the mystery genre in general and want to know where to start with Monsieur Poirot, lock the room and gather all your rich friend suspects, because all will now be revealed.

Media in the '80s was full of larger-than-life personalities, and TV was no exception. From high-concept action to star-driven crime solving and even confined comedies, bigger was usually better. Some of the best shows just kept growing, and a couple of the titles on this list of the best 1980s TV shows are still around (or at least have been revived very recently). Those that didn't last nonetheless made their mark on pop culture at large.
While not every show named below is an American show, they are all, to some degree, scripted. Even though the decade spawned many iconic talk shows and nonfiction programming, with hosts ranging from Phil Donahue to Robin Leach, those are best covered elsewhere. These are the stories that kept us coming back to their characters, actors, plots, and wild gimmicks, in a decade where money was seemingly no object, and TV tried to cater to every age group.
