The 1975 musical satire is a curious amalgam of madcap comedy and Brit realism as the band ride the giddy highs and brutal lows of the 70s music industry
Here is Slade’s movie musical satire from 1975, a film with all the pungent historical presence of a pub ashtray, about an imaginary band called Flame which looked and sounded a lot like Slade, fronted by Stoker, played by Noddy Holder. It came out a year after the film’s soundtrack album was released, and now gets a rerelease for its 50-year anniversary. Slade in Flame – which is to say, Flame, starring Slade – is regarded by fans and non-fans alike with enormous affection and regard, and it certainly has a weird, goofy energy: the audio mix sometimes surreally privileging ambient sounds such as doors closing and glasses chinking, with the dialogue way in the background.

Conti plays twin brothers, one of whom is suspected of the other’s murder, in this dreamy but frustrating fable
Simon Perry’s elusive, lugubrious, faintly bizarre psychodrama from 1977, based on a novel of the same name by author and travel writer Nicholas Wollaston is now re-released; it is a dreamily directionless movie which resists, or almost resists, categorisation. It seems as if it is going to be a thriller or supernatural mystery, and you can wait almost until the final credits for some final narrative flourish or definitive plot shock that would prove what it’s all been about. And in fact there is a revelation, but it is presented so coolly that you will be expecting something else to come afterwards. An unsympathetic producer might well want to cut this film by two-thirds and present it as an episode of Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected, but...

Jean Marsh, the sleek British actress who co-created Upstairs, Downstairs and won an Emmy for her performance as the prim and proper parlormaid Rose Buck on the acclaimed ITV drama, has died. She was 90.
Marsh died Sunday at her home in London from complications of dementia, filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg told The New York Times.
Doctor Who historians know Marsh for her portrayal of Sara Kingdom, who ably assists William Hartnell’s Doctor in his fight against the mutant Daleks, on the third season of the BBC sci-fi series in 1965-66.
A year earlier, she had played King Edward’s French princess sister, Joanna, on the show’s “The Crusade” serial, then returned as the ruthless enchantress Morgaine for 1989’s “Battlefield” storyline.
On American TV shows, the London native starred as an android brought to an asteroid to keep a prisoner (Jack Warden) company on 1959’s “The Lonely,” the seventh episode of CBS’ The Twilight Zone,...

Of all the films in Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy "The Dark Knight Rises" isn't the most fondly remembered. Sure, it made $1 billion at the global box office and was arguably the most ambitious superhero movie ever made in terms of its scale. But Nolan was always going to struggle to follow the zenith that was 2008's "The Dark Knight," and in many fans' estimations, struggle is exactly what he did.
Much has been written about the issues with "Rises" so we'll spare you yet another critique. In fact, we'll go one better and say there's a lot to like about the film, Marion Cotillard's controversial death scene notwithstanding. Aside from Nolan's always impressive in-camera action set-pieces, the film also featured some great performances, with Tom Hardy's Bane becoming almost as big a cultural phenomenon as Heath Ledger's Joker from the previous installment. Sure, most of...

Among the most recognizable performers in the American entertainment industry, few actors have had a more eclectic career than Sam Elliott. The respected figure has appeared in multiple films and television shows, allowing a wide range of audiences to enjoy his talents. In particular, Elliott's prolific work in the Western genre features some of his best material.
As one of the most stylized genres in fiction, Westerns can evoke several themes in storytelling, construct great action and create several dynamic characters. Thanks to various roles across film and TV, Sam Elliott has a career that encompasses some of the best acting performances of his era.

Ridley Scott claims that his debut 1977 movie would have won one of the biggest film prizes had it not been for $50K bribery. The English director is perhaps best known for his iconic sci-fi films, Alien and Blade Runner, which were only the second and third films of his career. A few years earlier, he made his feature directorial debut in 1977 with a lesser-known historical drama, his first in the genre before directing many more in Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Duel, and Napoleon.
Scott's later historical epic Gladiator did win arguably the biggest prize in film, the Academy Award for Best Picture, in 2001, while his 2016 sci-fi film The Martian was also nominated for the honor. Additionally, Scott has received an Oscar nomination for Best Director three times for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down. While Oppenheimer was bursting at the seams with incredible performances, Robert Downey Jr. was a particular standout. Widely considered one of 2023's best films, Oppenheimer chronicles the life and times of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), particularly as he was developing the world's first atomic bomb. A smashing success, Oppenheimer made nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office and took home a plethora of Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Murphy), and Best Supporting Actor for Downey. Oppenheimer is also notable for netting acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan his first Academy Award, as he won for Best Director.

Not Cillian Murphy! 2-Time Oscar Winning British Actor Has Appeared in Most Christopher Nolan Movies
Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are synonyms of the Hollywood industry. One of the biggest directors of the 21st century and the Oscar-winning Irish star of modern cinema has an iconic partnership that goes beyond working together professionally. Nolan and Murphy have worked on some of the biggest projects such as Inception, Oppenheimer, Batman Begins, Dunkirk, and The Dark Knight Rises. While Murphy’s unbelievable acting performances in Nolan’s movies have been universally acclaimed, the Peaky Blinders star isn’t the one who has most appeared in Nolan movies.

Christopher Nolan has been attracting the eyes of critics throughout his entire career. Although it was working with a minuscule budget of $6,000 and only played in a few theaters in the United States, his 1998 debut feature "Following" was praised for its tight storytelling and terse psychological underpinnings. Nolan then rose to international fame with his 2000 film "Memento," a neo-noir about a man unable to form new memories. Its backward-chronological-order plot was cleverly conceived and impeccably laid out, somehow coming to a traditional narrative climax even while running in reverse.
From there it was off to the races, so to speak. Nolan became a power player in Hollywood, directing gigantic movie stars like Al Pacino and Robin Williams in a remake of "Insomnia" and making a gigantic, zeitgeist-shifting hit with 2005's "Batman Begins." Nolan's three Batman movies are still spoken of with enthusiasm to this day. Their success also allowed him...

Al Pacino wishes he had won an Oscar for Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone as a remake of the 1932 film of the same name, and in turn based on the 1930 novel by Armitage Trail, the 1983 crime drama follows Cuban refugee Tony Montana, who arrives in Miami without money during the Mariel boatlift and rises to become a notorious drug kingpin. Al Pacino leads Scarface's cast as Tony Montana alongside Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia, Mriam Coln, and F. Murray Abraham.

The young British actor isn’t exaggerating. When we meet at Soho House in London, he’s sporting the sort of wide-eyed expression of someone trying to come to terms with a couple of life-changing weeks that might be difficult to put into words.
For starters, Conti recently got back from the Venice Film Festival opening night world premiere of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” alongside director Tim Burton and fellow castmembers Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe.

J. Robert Oppenheimer died of throat cancer at 62. Oppenheimer died in 1967, four years after the events of Christopher Nolan's 2023 epic biographical movie. The theoretical physicist's legacy has shifted after his death, sparking debate on his character.
Oppenheimer depicts the life and career of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who aided in the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II, but the movie doesn't explain when and how he died. The epic biographical thriller drama, directed and written by Christopher Nolan, follows Oppenheimer's life from his studies at the University of Cambridge in the mid-1920s to President Lyndon B. Johnson awarding him the Enrico Fermi Award, a lifetime achievement scientific medal, in 1963. Ultimately, Oppenheimer's timeline isn't linear as it jumps back and forth between different periods but still never shows Oppenheimer's death.

The film Oppenheimer portrays a fictionalized connection between Robert Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein that is not true to the facts. In reality, Einstein did not like Oppenheimer's personality and was a committed pacifist who came to regret his role in the creation of the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and Einstein had differing scientific beliefs, and Oppenheimer would not have asked Einstein for a second opinion on nuclear fission.
Oppenheimer focuses largely on the titular scientist and his relationships, but the film's portrayal of his connection to Albert Einstein isn't true to the facts, as Einstein did not like Oppenheimer in real life. In the movie, the bond between Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) serves as the impetus for Oppenheimer's eventual fall from public grace as well as underlines one of the film's overarching themes. What, exactly, was Albert Einstein’s involvement in the creation of the atomic bomb — and how did the world’s most famous physicist grapple with the morality of that work? The existential threat posed by nuclear weapons has resurfaced in popular culture in large part due to Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated Oppenheimer, in which Einstein (played by Tom Conti) is depicted advising J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who played a pivotal role in the development of atomic weapons.
In reality Oppenheimer and Einstein likely only met a few times — their relationship has been described as “cordial and complicated” — and, ultimately, Einstein’s contributions to Oppenheimer’s work were theoretical and indirect. However, the foundation of Einstein’s work undeniably influenced all scientists’ understanding of physics moving forward, and those foundations are explored in Einstein and the Bomb, a new docudrama from director Anthony Philipson. However, the foundation of Einstein’s work undeniably influenced all scientists’ understanding of physics moving forward, and those foundations are explored in Einstein and the Bomb, a new docudrama from director Anthony Philipson. In addition to offering context to...

“Oppenheimer” was notably marketed in the press as the sixth collaboration between director Christopher Nolan and star Cillian Murphy, who was finally getting his chance to lead a Nolan movie after five supporting turns in films such as “Batman Begins” and “Dunkirk.” Nolan has another longtime collaborator in Michael Caine, who got a special shoutout when the filmmaker accepted the BFI Fellowship this week at the British Film Institute chairman’s dinner (via The Independent).
Nolan, who many awards pundits agree is the BAFTA and Oscar frontrunner for best director and best picture thanks to “Oppenheimer,” remembered Caine joking to him about not being able to star in the atomic bomb epic.
”Okay, enough is enough,” Caine told his frequent collaborator.
“I had to go off on my own,” Nolan said about his reaction to Caine sitting “Oppenheimer” out. “So, okay, I haven’t got Michael Caine, I’d better get Matt Damon,...

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was the surprise warm-up act at a prestigious film industry event in London on Wednesday night that saw Oppenheimer director — and BAFTA and Oscar front runner — Christopher Nolan receive the British Film Institute Fellowship Award for his outstanding contribution to cinema.
The premier hailed Nolan — whose credits also include the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk — as “undoubtedly one of our preeminent filmmakers.”
However, before doing so, he delivered quips with an aplomb that had guests seated in the ballroom of London’s Rosewood Hotel in stitches.
“Politics is showbusiness for ugly people,” Sunak declared. The room liked that one, even though the line’s a golden oldie.
“So, I was pleasantly surprised,” he continued, “when I was recently mistaken for Timothée Chalamet.”
Then with a well-timed pause, he added, “At least, I think that’s why they were shouting ‘Wonka’ at me.”

Robert M. Young, the adventurous director who called the shots for Edward James Olmos in The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, Farrah Fawcett in Extremities and Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta in Dominick and Eugene, died Feb. 6, his son Andrew announced. He was 99.
After getting his start in educational and documentary films, Young also directed the 1969 Peabody-winning CBS telefilm J.T., written by Jane Wagner. Revolving around a Harlem youngster (Kevin Hooks) and an alley cat, it bowed on a Saturday afternoon and was repeated in primetime as the network preempted its most popular show, Gunsmoke.
Young also served as cinematographer, producer and co-writer with director Michael Roemer on the critically acclaimed drama Nothing But a Man (1964), featuring Ivan Dixon and jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln as a struggling young Black couple in Alabama.

It can be said that Christopher Nolan has always known how to end a movie. From Leonard Shelby concluding his journey where it began and asking “now where was I?” in Memento to the topper that wouldn’t stop spinning in Inception, this is a filmmaker who looks for the most potent image that will burrow its way into audiences’ heads.
Yet the final scene of his most ambitious film to date is something more impressive, if altogether disquieting. Oppenheimer definitely implants a grim idea in the viewer’s mind, but it does so by giving the uncanny impression that we are seeing it through J. Robert Oppenheimer’s eyes first. Standing by the duck pond that Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) has been consigned to by posterity, and where Oppie will be joining him in exile sooner than he realizes, the man credited with fathering...

In Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) only briefly appears. The famous scientist shares a few scenes with Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) himself, but these interactions are pivotal to the Manhattan Project, and the haunting realization about the world's future towards the end. There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the involvement of the real Einstein in the creation of the atomic bomb — while the scientist's popular E = mc^2 equation does explain the theoretical nitty-gritty of the massive energy released by an atomic bomb, it does not provide any instructions for actually building one. Einstein was, in fact, denied security clearance to be involved with the Manhattan Project, and did not have a close relationship with Oppenheimer until the last decade of his life.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer quickly became one of the year's biggest movies, being revered by critics and taking over the box office. As the director's first foray into biopic territory, the three-hour epic features a cast stacked with A-list performers playing real-life figures. Cillian Murphy leads the film, playing the titular physicist and Father of the Atomic Bomb, Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, and Tom Conti as Albert Einstein. Among the impressive ensemble is also Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, a psychiatrist, Communist Party member, and close friend of J. Robert Oppenheimer. An accomplished woman who struggled with personal demons and ultimately met an unfortunate fate, she remains a pivotal figure in Oppenheimer's legacy as one of history's most consequential figures. And who better to walk in the shoes of such a character than one...

Last awards season, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won almost everything at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Its four victories were for actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis, supporting actor Ke Huy Quan and best ensemble cast. While the scope of the sweep surprised many, the film’s triumph in the top category was widely expected.
This year, it doesn’t appear likely that any film will match the unprecedented SAG Awards feat achieved by “Everything.” However, I do think that current Gold Derby frontrunner “Oppenheimer” will maintain its lead, and ultimately will win the guild’s prestigious best ensemble prize. Here are five reasons why.
1. It boasts a cast filled with heavyweights.
In addition to the title role portrayed by Cillian Murphy, “Oppenheimer” features a roster of highly respected industry talent. That includes previous SAG Award champions Robert Downey Jr. (TV’s “Ally McBeal”), Emily Blunt...

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday, and we’re Kenough? One week after typing about the truly unhinged race for Best Supporting Actress, we’re back to put some words on the page about Best Supporting Actor. Fortunately, this category feels a little more firmed up — with four actors heavily predicted by experts, pundits, and regular folks. It starts with Robert Downey Jr. for “Oppenheimer,” the favorite here, and with good reason. He’s a huge star whom everyone loves and he’s in the biggest movie that’s the Best Picture frontrunner and his performance is amazing. That doesn’t mean Downey will win, but as we talked...

While Jim Henson’s Labyrinth probably features what has come to be known as David Bowie’s most iconic role, fans of the film might be disappointed to know that it was far from the legend’s greatest appearance on the big screen with 1983’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence featuring his best performance in a starring role. Ironically for a film that doesn’t feature any of its characters playing instruments or singing songs, the film starred another megastar musician in the form of Ryuichi Sakamoto, a pioneer in the Japanese electronic music sphere and composer of several timeless classics, including The Last Emperor and The Revenant. Beyond that, it also marks the acting debut of auteur filmmaker Takeshi Kitano and features another starring performance from Tom Conti, the man who played Einstein in Oppenheimer. It’s fair to say that the cast is stacked on this one, but with the film turning 40 this year,...

Oppenheimer, a new film by Christopher Nolan, examines J. Robert Oppenheimer's pivotal role in the creation of the atomic bomb and his friendship with Albert Einstein. The film explores the moral and ethical issues surrounding scientific development and the profound repercussions of Oppenheimer's scientific achievements on both personal and global levels. Oppenheimer's internal struggle and the vengeful rift with Lewis Strauss are central themes in the movie, highlighting the personal and political consequences of Oppenheimer's involvement in the atomic bomb project.
J. Robert Oppenheimer's pivotal involvement in the creation of the atomic bomb has captivated the globe for decades. However, the viewpoint on this complex subject extends beyond historical sources and films. Oppenheimer, a new film by Christopher Nolan, takes a fresh look at this story. It not only reveals Oppenheimer and Einstein's intimate friendship but also knits their lives together, diving into the profound repercussions of their scientific achievements.

Albert Einstein was never directly involved in the creation of the atomic bomb due to his German ties and political stances, but his influence on its existence is undeniable. Einstein expressed his opposition to the atomic bomb and its devastating consequences, as he realized that its creation would continue to spread and intensify. While Einstein did not take responsibility for the Manhattan Project's atomic bombs, his warning to President Roosevelt about Germany's efforts in weaponizing atomic energy played a crucial role in the project's birth.
While Albert Einstein is not a prominent part of the film Oppenheimer (nor did he work Manhattan Project), he is connected to the weapons inception, and there are a few documented instances of his viewpoints regarding the atomic bombs. Christopher Nolan's ambitious movie, Oppenheimer, vividly recounts the historical narrative of the atomic bomb's development and the subsequent events following its deployment. Within the film,...

So we watched Oppenheimer on IMAX Laser. After writing a vast amount of articles dealing with the cinematography aspects of the film, we didn’t imagine how great the sound is. The following contains spoilers for Oppenheimer, now playing in theaters.
There are no small parts, certainly not in three-hour Christopher Nolan movies. The celebrated director has a well-earned reputation as an actor's dream, particularly with prestige projects like Oppenheimer, where awards are a non-zero possibility. That explains the presence of a number of A-list actors in small supporting roles. It also gives Nolan and his casting directors plenty of options to choose from.
It's no mistake, then, that Nolan chooses to anchor Oppenheimer with Tom Conti, a celebrated Scottish actor best known for his stage performances. He plays Albert Einstein in the film and occupies just a few short scenes amid a colossal runtime. But his final, chilling exchange with Robert Oppenheimer is the last thing audiences see before the credits roll, and the actor nails the moment to the wall. If he looks familiar to Batman fans, he should:...

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer surpassed expectations with its evocative story, staggering visuals, and stellar performances during this much-anticipated Barbenheimer weekend. Led by Cillian Murphy as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Father of the Atom Bomb, and supported by Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon among a hugely talented ensemble cast, Oppenheimer is easily the best of Nolan's oeuvre.
The biopic-war-drama spans a lengthy three hours, but the skillful representation of Oppenheimer's life, his ethical dilemmas and the complexity of the subject matter keep audiences spellbound for every minute. Every scene holds immense symbolism and is enriched by the compelling acting of every star in the movie. Even the most minor parts are played to perfection in Oppenheimer, proving how accomplished Nolan is at drawing the best of talent and using them effectively.

“Oppenheimer” is one of Christopher Nolan‘s best movies according to both critics and audiences. While the film’s script, technical achievements, and directing are all being praised, however, it’s the cast that makes the film pop. Simply put, it is one of the most stacked casts in cinema history outside of, say, “Avengers: Endgame.”
Cillian Murphy leads the line in the titular role of Robert J. Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, while “Endgame” actor himself, Robert Downey Jr., portrays political player Lewis Strauss and Emily Blunt is Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty. Matt Damon, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Conti, Florence Pugh, and Alden Ehrenreich also appear. As such, our odds charts are currently predicting that “Oppenheimer” will land not one acting bid, not two acting bids, but three nominations for its cast. Here’s the rundown.
Best Actor — Cillian Murphy
This is the obvious one and for good reason.

“Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds” is the famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita that physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer spoke upon witnessing the first denotation of a nuclear device, as the world entered the new era of nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s epic drama about Oppenheimer, his work on the Manhattan Project, and his treatment after the war. The biographical drama starts like a historical thriller and ends like a profound warning to the world, all set against the sweep of history that changed the world.

“Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds” is the famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita that physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer spoke upon witnessing the first denotation of a nuclear device, as the world entered the new era of nuclear weapons. This article contains spoilers for "Oppenheimer."
Part of what makes "Oppenheimer" such a rewarding experience is the chance to see Robert Downey Jr. act again. His 13-year run as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ultimately subsumed his career during the 2010s — and his first post-Marvel project was the ill-advised "Dolittle." With this career trajectory, it's easy to forget Downey isn't just a charismatic movie star: he's a really skilled actor, one who hasn't gotten to stretch his muscles in over a decade. "Oppenheimer," his first and hopefully not last movie with Christopher Nolan, finally grants him that opportunity.
Downey plays Lewis Strauss, the man who destroyed Oppenheimer's reputation. From the beginning there's contempt in their relationship; Oppenheimer mispronouncing Strauss' name is the first of indignities that the latter takes too personally. To reflect how their lives intersected, the film employs two framing devices. One, Oppenheimer's security clearance hearing...

The life of American theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, the most respected leader of the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb during World War II, has been the subject of a number of biographies, but history hasn’t been kind to him. His story still needs to be chronicled. Oppenheimer is an epic biographical drama written and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of J Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age. ‘Oppenheimer’ gives us a fatalistic view of nuclear weapons, and the trauma that they entail.
During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints Oppenheimer, along with a team of scientists, to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project.

After confronting many dangerous assassins, it seems like John Wick has finally met his match in Oppenheimer. The action saga starring Keanu Reeves returned earlier this year with its forth chapter, which rapidly became one of the favorites among the fans and one of the most acclaimed action movies from the last two decades, which of course was also reflected on its performance at the box office.
In the latest adventure of John Wick, the famous assassin is looking to finally defeat The High Table to earn his freedom, but in order to do so, he'll have to face one more terrible enemy. After John Wick 3: Parabellum failed to meet fans expectations, the forth installment managed to revive the franchise and became a huge smash. According to Box Office Mojo, John Wick Chapter 4 ended its run in theaters grossing more than $187 million dollars, after a record-breaking opening weekend that reached $73.8 million.
