15 TV Shows That Were Canceled Multiple Times
Image
To be a television fan is to accept anxiety and heartbreak at some level. Since the beginning of the medium (and especially now with streaming services), every TV show's future, no matter how seemingly beloved, is at the mercy of studios, production companies, and advertisers. I've experienced many shows I adored get canceled without mercy, and I'm sure you have, too.

But in a few instances -- increasingly so in the era of specialty reruns, streaming, and revival-mania -- these cancellations are reversed. Hallelujah, your show is saved! But then, and here's where it gets really heartbreaking, this revival is reversed, resulting in yet another cancellation! Does anyone have an antacid?!

To, uh, "celebrate" this strange facet of TV, let's look at 15 TV shows that were canceled multiple times. Some got proper finales, some were cut short with no resolution, and some are still on the air to this day.

Debbie Allen to receive honorary Oscar: Here’s a look at her trailblazing career and awards history
Image
Debbie Allen has yet another reason to celebrate her illustrious career — she will soon add an honorary Oscar to her impressive list of accolades.

The 75-year-old actor, director, choreographer, dancer, singer, and producer (a true multihyphenate talent) has been named as one of the recipients of the 2025 Governors Awards. She will be honored alongside Tom Cruise, production designer Wynn Thomas, and Dolly Parton, the latter of whom will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The awards ceremony will take place on Nov. 16 in Los Angeles.

Allen began her career in Broadway theater, making her debut in the chorus of Purlie in 1970. She made her television debut in 1976 on the sitcom Good Times and later appeared in Roots: The Next Generations and the TV movie Ragtime. In 1980, she starred in the film Fame and subsequently reprised her role as dance teacher Lydia Grant in the television adaptation in 1982. For six seasons,...

Campaigning while canceled: ‘Étoile’ could follow these other deep-sixed shows to Emmy glory
Image
It was a classic late-Friday news dump: Amazon confirmed that Étoile, the splashy ballet-themed Prime Video dramedy from the Emmy-winning team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) had been canceled after one season. The timing was curious: the news broke on June 6, just one week before Emmy voting was set to begin.

Although Étoile has been canceled, the campaign continues. There are billboards and trade ads touting the positive reviews and making a play for votes. Given the publicity surrounding Étoile and the Palladinos' track record (they have 10 Emmys in 24 bids between them), there's a chance that when nominations come out on July 15, Étoile could make the cut. And if it did, it wouldn't be an outlier.

Four years ago, in July 2021, Lovecraft Country received a whopping 18 Emmy nominations for its first and only season, leaving many stunned that a canceled show nabbed the fifth most...

Battle Of The Divas: Patti LuPone Says She’s ‘Not Friends’ With Audra McDonald, Disses Her ‘Gypsy’ Performance
Image
Broadway diva Patti LuPone stated during an interview that she and fellow theater star Audra McDonald are “not friends,” and she also appeared to slam McDonald’s performance in the recently revived Broadway musical Gypsy.

During an interview with The New Yorker, LuPone stated that McDonald was “not a friend” and that the two of them had drifted apart a long time ago. The reporter also mentioned that the singer did not care to elaborate.

LuPone was then asked by the reporter what she thought about McDonald’s performance as Mama Rose, the main character of Gypsy, for which she was praised in numerous reviews of this musical’s revival.

Schulman then mentioned that, upon hearing this question, the singer “stared at him in silence for 15 seconds.”

“Then she turned to the window and sighed, ‘What a beautiful day,'” he went on to say.

Since 1959, the role of Mama...

Loretta Swit
M*A*S*H icon Loretta Swit is dead at 87
Loretta Swit
Loretta Swit, the Emmy-winning actress best known for her iconic role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the long-running television series M*A*S*H, is dead. She was 87.

Born on November 4, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey, Swit’s career spanned television, film, and the stage, but her portrayal of the fiercely independent and compassionate army nurse during the Korean War made her a household name. She was part of M*A*S*H since the first episode debuted in 1972 and remained a central figure throughout the show’s 11-season run, winning two Emmy Awards and millions of fans. Along with Alan Alda, Swit was the only original actor to appear in both the pilot episode and the finale. Sally Kellerman, the actress who played Houlihan in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H movie, died in 2022.

“[Houlihan] was [unique] at the time and in her time, which was the ’50s, when [the Korean War] was happening,” Swit said in a 2004 interview.

Loretta Swit, Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on ‘M*A*S*H,’ Dies at 87
Image
Loretta Swit, the actress and animal activist forever known for her pioneering turn as the disciplined Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the acclaimed CBS sitcom M*A*S*H, has died. She was 87.

According to a police report, Swit died just after midnight Friday of suspected natural causes at her home in New York City, her publicist, Harlan Boll, announced.

Swit won two Emmys for her portrayal of the Army nurse — she was nominated 10 times, every year the show was on the air except the first — and appeared on 240 of the series’ 251 episodes during its sensational 11-season run.

Adapting the character from Sally Kellerman‘s film portrayal of the lusty powerhouse, Swit was one of only two actors (along with Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce) to have a role in both the pilot and series finale of M*A*S*H.

That finale, which aired Feb. 28, 1983, attracted a record of nearly 106 million viewers, and a...

Why ‘Hacks’ Season 4 could finally win Hannah Einbinder that elusive Emmy Award
Image
The fourth time could be the charm for Hannah Einbinder at the 2025 Emmys.

The Hacks costar was nominated in Best Comedy Supporting Actress for each of the first three seasons for playing young comedy writer Ava Daniels. Einbinder lost to Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) in 2021, Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary) in 2022, and Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear) in 2024. Meanwhile, lead actress Jean Smart as legendary comedian Deborah Vance has gone 3-for-3 at the Emmys so far in the Best Comedy Actress category.

According to Gold Derby's Emmy predictions, Einbinder is out front to finally win her first trophy for Season 4. Her closest competitors, as of this writing, are Colón-Zayas, Jessica Williams (Shrinking), Ralph, Catherine O'Hara (The Studio), and Janelle James (Abbott Elementary).

Einbinder has the benefit of starring on the reigning Emmy winner for Best Comedy Series, Hacks, which returned to Max on April 10 and continues airing until May 29, which will...

Tonys: Audra McDonald would be the 4th Rose in ‘Gypsy’ to win Best Actress in a Musical
Image
Audra McDonald is poised to make history... again.

According to Gold Derby's current predictions, the Broadway legend will win Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Rose in Gypsy at the 2025 Tony Awards. If she does, not only would it extend her acting record to seven trophies — she'd also be the fourth actress to have won for one of the most iconic leading roles in musical theater.

Of Gypsy's five prior Broadway outings, three of them won their stars the Tony: Angela Lansbury for the first revival in 1975, Tyne Daly for the second revival in 1990, and Patti LuPone for the previous revival in 2008. The only actresses to have lost a Tony race for their portrayals of Rose are Ethel Merman for the original production in 1960 (she lost to Mary Martin for The Sound of Music) and Bernadette Peters for the third revival in 2003 (she lost to Marissa Jaret Winokur...

Why Shonda Rhimes Scrapped Spinoffs of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Scandal’
Image
Before decamping to Netflix, Shonda Rhimes considered creating a spinoff for ABC hit “Scandal” focusing on Eli Pope (Joe Morton) and additional spinoffs for “Grey’s Anatomy,” including one that would have revolved around Derek Shepherd’s (Patrick Dempsey) four sisters.

Rhimes even contemplated setting “Grey’s” affiliate series in shows like Boston and Chicago, but ultimately decided against it.

“I felt like we could have done ‘Chicago Anatomy,’ Boston. We could have done that. It just didn’t appeal to me to rebuild the same world,” she told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Thursday.

“I thought that there could be a spinoff with Amelia [Caterina Scorsone] that was [about] the Shepherd sisters,” she says. “They’re all doctors. It could have been a Shepherd sisters show, which would’ve been very interesting,” Rhimes continued. The spinoff would have brought back previously introduced sister Nancy (Embeth Davidtz), Kathleen (Amy Acker) and...

Shonda added, “I thought that there could be a spinoff with Amelia [Caterina Scorsone] that was the Shepherd sisters. They’re all doctors. It could have been a Shepherd sisters show, which would’ve been very interesting.”

Audra McDonald Dazzles In Broadway’s Revival Of ‘Gypsy’ As The First Black Rose
Image
In multiple outstanding reviews of the newly revived Broadway musical Gypsy, six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald has been applauded for her outstanding performance as the main character Mama Rose.

Gypsy, set during the Great Depression, follows Mama Rose as she desperately tries to support her daughter’s dreams of being a vaudeville star. When her daughter does eventually get her big break, Rose is left feeling abandoned after the success of her efforts.

A historically beloved story often referred to as the “Mt. Everest” of musical theater, the central role of Rose has been passed down through a series of impressive actresses over the years, from Ethel Merman in the 1959 original, and on to Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler and Patti LuPone.

An actress who is known for defying racial typecasting in her career, McDonald broke barriers in the 1994 revival of the play Carousel in which she...

Linda Lavin, a versatile actress on stage and screen known for her powerhouse voice, sharp comedic timing, and warm presence, died December 29, 2024. The cause was complications from lung cancer; she was 87.

Born on October 15, 1938, in Portland, Maine, Lavin’s interest in performing began at a young age. Her Broadway debut came in 1966, introducing the song “You’ve Got Possibilities” in the short-lived musical “It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman.” But her early career is defined by her starring turn on the TV sitcom “Alice,” which ran from 1976 to 1985 and earned her an Emmy nomination.

Based on the Martin Scorsese film “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” the show starred Lavin as Alice, a widowed mother who moves to Phoenix to start a new life and work as a waitress. Lavin brought warmth, resilience, and humor to the character, earning critical praise and two Golden Globe awards.

‘Gypsy’ Theater Review: Audra McDonald Climbs the Mountain of One of the All-Time Greatest Musicals and Plants a Triumphant Flag
Image
Ask newer fans what the greatest musical of all time is and recency bias probably means the answer will be something like Rent or Les Misérables or Hamilton. Ask seasoned theater folk with wider frames of reference and Gypsy will usually land in the top three. For good reason. The 1959 warhorse is perhaps the ultimate tragicomic depiction of showbiz struggle, which makes it a strong contender for the ultimate Broadway musical.

It’s a cliché to call Rose, the archetypal pushy stage mother at the show’s center, the King Lear of musical theater. But that’s hard to dispute when you watch a consummate performer like Audra McDonald pour her heart and soul and every ounce of her gumption, her supple vocals and finely nuanced acting skills into the titanic role.

The six-time Tony winner humanizes this driven, achingly unfulfilled woman without ever softening her abrasive edges, her relentlessly self-serving determination,...

Ballad of Buster Scruggs: All 6 Endings Explained
Image
With six separate stories taking place in the Old West, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs endings each offered something new while all sharing similar themes within Joel and Ethan Coen's Western anthology. The Oscar-winning Coens had previously explored this genre but were able to tell a variety of Western tales here. The movie is separated into six stories, each with its own thought-provoking and brutal ending: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Near Algodones, Meal Ticket, All Gold Canyon, The Gal Who Got Rattled, and The Mortal Remains.

Presented as a book of Old West tall tales, the Coen brothers wrote The Ballad of Buster Scruggs over 25 years. The anthology movie chapters cycle through homages to great Western movies, darkly comedic misadventures, and morality tales with an underlying theme holding it together. The shorts deal with the many harsh realities of life in the Old West, especially death. Whether it's...

Clint Eastwood's 10 Best Non-Western Action Movies
Image
Clint Eastwood may have been made by the western, but he has certainly not been defined solely by it. His work over the years has crossed multiple genres, from horror films like Play Misty For Me to romances like The Bridges Of Madison County. Despite his ability to play in a variety of different genres, Eastwood has proved time and time again that he is made for action movies. While Eastwood's Western movies may prove some of his best, they are certainly not all he has to offer.

Having worked with greats of the action genre such as Don Siegel and Wolfgang Peterson, Eastwood has had a style of action film practically built around him. It is not just his Western shootouts that are remarkable. Never one to rely on heavy stunts and choreography, the language of his action films is unique. His stern demeanor and large frame prove perfect as an immovable force,...

10 Underrated Spy Thrillers From The 1970s You Probably Haven't Heard Of
Image
The 1970s were an excellent time to be a fan of the spy thriller genre. Franchises like the James Bond films were becoming increasingly popular, with five Bond films being released during this decade alone. 007 wasn't the only force to be reckoned with in the genre, though. Other major features, like 3 Days of the Condor and Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, also roared onto the scene, making spy thrillers a beloved genre throughout the country.

Of course, not every spy film received the same level of acclaim as these hits. Because so many of this type of film were being released at the same time, many great ones managed to fly under the radar. Sadly, these films never seemed to get the attention they rightfully deserved. Now, when looking back at this era in the film industry, it is essential to take a look at the more...

This Clint Eastwood Sequel Predicted Michael Bay's Best Movie By 20 Years
Image
Clint Eastwood's The Enforcer beat Michael Bay to his best movie by a good 20 years. Despite having been a star for decades, there are surprisingly few Clint Eastwood movie franchises in existence. Clint always preferred to tackle new characters and stories, so outside of the Dollars trilogy or his Every Which Way... duology, he largely avoided reprising the same part. The key exception is the Dirty Harry movies, where Eastwood played San Francisco detective "Dirty" Harry Callahan a grand total of five times.

The original 1971 thriller was both hugely successful and controversial, with its story of a cop who takes the law into his own hands to stop a vicious serial killer. The first sequel, Magnum Force, dealt with the vigilante theme head on when Harry faced off with a squad of murderous cops, and the series became a reliable one for Clint throughout the 1970s and 1980s. After the final entry,...

Tour our photo gallery to learn who else belongs to this special group.

Including Taylor, eight of the 17 performers on this roster won for at least one of their nominated roles. The lone dual honoree in the bunch is Tyne Daly, who clinched Best Drama Supporting Actress trophies for both “Christy” (1996) and “Judging Amy” (2003). Also listed are Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito, who were each recognized in the male category for three different series.

Although featured drama series performers were not permanently afforded genre-specific categories until 1970, those who contended for earlier...

Stephen Sondheim (‘Merrily We Roll Along’) ties mentor Oscar Hammerstein for most Musical Revival Tony wins
Image
It’s a hit! A palpable hit! “Merrily We Roll Along” cleaned up at the 2024 Tony Awards, winning the coveted Best Revival of a Musical trophy. “Merrily” is now the fifth musical from composer Stephen Sondheim to win this revival category. That ties the record of Oscar Hammerstein II, who has also seen five of his tuners win this race, meaning that the works of these two theater legends have prevailed more than any other writers in this category.

Sondheim and Hammerstein haven’t picked up any actual Tony Awards themselves for these winning revivals. The Best Revival of a Musical Tony, like the other production categories, is awarded to a show’s producers.

Other Sondheim productions that have prevailed in Best Revival of a Musical category are “Into the Woods” (2002), “Assassins” (2004), and “Company” (for both the 2007 and 2022 productions). Additionally, the 1989 production of “Gypsy” starring Tyne Daly, won a combined...

Audra McDonald to Lead ‘Gypsy’ Revival on Broadway
Image
Audra McDonald will reopen Broadway’s Majestic Theatre with a new production of Gypsy.

McDonald will play Rose, one of the top roles in musical theater, which has been played by the likes of Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone. George C. Wolfe, a five time Tony-Award winning director, will helm the revival. Camille A. Brown (Hell’s Kitchen) has been tapped as choreographer.

Performances begin Nov. 21, with an opening night Dec. 19. This production will be the first to play the Majestic Theatre, which was the longtime home to The Phantom of the Opera. The theater closed for renovations after the production ended its 35-year run in April 2023.

McDonald is a six-time Tony Award winning actor, with wins for her roles in Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. She...

Tony Award Nomination Predictions 2024: The Shoo-Ins, The Wild Cards And Everything In-Between
Image
Close races and sharp elbows are likely when the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced Tuesday morning. With so many shows opening during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominators might still be clearing their minds — and maybe taking a moment to eat and breathe — as they ponder and re-ponder the 36 productions that opened on Broadway between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.

Some of the nominations are no-brainers: The much-praised and hugely popular Merrily We Roll Along is a sure bet for all concerned, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, Here Lies Love, Water for Elephants, I’m looking at you.

A selection of categories will be read live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 am Et, and a full livestream of the announcements will follow at 9 a.m. Et on the official Tony Awards YouTube page.

2024 Tony Awards nominations slugfest: Final predictions in 17 competitive categories [Watch]
Image
“This crazy whirlwind of a season has finally come to an end,” declares Sam Eckmann as we kick off our final Tony Awards nominations predictions slugfest of 2024. We begin our conversation with the musical categories and the ever-challenging race for Best Musical. Sam and I both feel “pretty secure” about the top three shows – “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and “Hell’s Kitchen” – and we surprisingly concur on the final two slots, predicting “Here Lies Love” and “The Outsiders.” There are so many potential nominees in contention, though, that we cite our alternate picks as I opt for “Days of Wine and Roses” as my number six, and Sam goes with “The Notebook.” Watch our full Tony Awards video slugfest above.

You can also watch both of us giving our wishlist picks, pleading to Tony nomination voters to choose some people who might be under the radar. Watch that video here.

2024 Tony Awards predictions slugfest: How many nominations will hit play ‘Appropriate’ earn? [Watch]
Image
“It is a pretty great crop of plays this year, several that have become big commercial hits,” declares Sam Eckmann about the many dramas and revivals in contention for nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. Sam and I met for the very first time this season to discuss the 15 productions eligible for nominations, reviewing our picks in seven of the 11 play categories. Watch our 2024 Tony Awards slugfest above.

In the top category of Best Play, we overlap on four of our five predicted nominees: “Stereophonic,” “Prayer for the French Republic,” “Mother Play” and “Patriots.” While I tentatively pick the upcoming “Mary Jane” by Amy Herzog for the fifth slot, Sam backs “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” by Jocelyn Bioh, saying it “got amazing reviews, enough to break in here.” We also discuss a possible surprise nomination for either “The Cottage” or “Grey House.” The other eligible productions are “I Need...

Broadway Revival Of ‘Doubt: A Parable’ Starring Liev Schreiber & Amy Ryan Extended By A Week
Image
The Broadway production of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable, starring Liev Schreiber and Amy Ryan, has been extended by a week. The show will now close on Sunday, April 21.

The Roundabout Theatre Company’s performance opened on March 7 at the Todd Haimes Theatre. The performance company attributed the extension to a demand for tickets.

The production was originally scheduled to open on Feb. 29 but was delayed when Tyne Daly, who had been cast opposite Schreiber, dropped out due to an unknown illness. Ryan joined the ensemble as Daly’s replacement and has been playing the lead role of Sister Aloysius since Feb. 13.

Schrieber and Ryan have both been praised by critics for their pitch-perfect performances.

Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Zoe Kazan are also stars in the show.

Tyne Daly Health Update: Star to Make ‘Full Recovery’ After Hospitalization
Image
After a health issue sent her to the hospital and led her to drop out of a Broadway revival of Doubt: A Parable, Tyne Daly is on the rebound. “On behalf of the cast and crew of Doubt, and the entire Roundabout [Theatre Company] family, we are elated that Tyne is on the mend and on her way to a full recovery,” Scott Ellis, director of the production and Roundabout’s interim artistic director, told People on Friday. Daly was slated to play Sister Aloysius in this production of the John Patrick Shanley play, but an undisclosed health issue resulted in her hospitalization on February 2, according to People. The 77-year-old “did her invited dress [rehearsal] performance and then was hospitalized” a source told the magazine. That day’s preview performance was canceled, and Isabel Keating temporarily filled Daly’s part for the preview the following day, as Roundabout said in a press release...

Broadway’s ‘The Notebook’ Sells Out First Three Previews As Overall Box Office Gets Chilly
Image
Winter had a chilling effect on Broadway last week, with most shows reporting at least some downturn at the box office and overall receipts dropping nearly 10% from the previous week.

In all, box office for the 24 productions totaled $21,192,251 for the week ending February 11, with attendance of 187,573 down about 12% from the previous week.

Only a half-dozen shows bucked the downward trend, most notably Sweeney Todd, which on February 9 welcomed Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster as the permanent replacements for Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford (understudies had been filling in since the originals departed January 14). Grosses for the Sondheim revival were up $402,763 for a $1,260,185 total.

Joining the roster was The Notebook, just a few seats shy of selling out all of its first three previews at the Schoenfeld Theatre. The production, with music by Ingrid Michaelson and a book by Bekah Brunstetter, grossed $364,678 for the three performances, with a healthy average ticket...

‘Harmony’, ‘Purlie Victorious’ Close On Upswings – Broadway Box Office
Image
Broadway said goodbye last week to two well-regarded but underperforming productions, with both Harmony and Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch posting better-than-usual weekly box office as last-chancers grabbed seats.

Harmony, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical about the real-life 1920s German singing group the Comedian Harmonists, filled a robust 99% of seats at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, grossing $853,055 for the week ending February 4. That’s a bump of $145,978 over the previous week.

Purlie Victorious, the universally acclaimed revival of the Ossie Davis comedy starring Leslie Odom Jr. and Kara Young, grossed $706,882, a boost of $58,090 over the previous week. Still, the production filled only 81% of seats at the Music Box.

In all, the 25 Broadway productions grossed $23,493,675, a slight 5% bump over the previous week (and nearly identical to last year’s gross for the week). Total attendance was 213,281, about 2% over the previous week and 9% over last year at this time.

Roundabout Theatre Company Officially Renames Broadway Venue To Honor Late Artistic Director Todd Haimes
Image
The Roundabout Theatre Company tonight renamed its Broadway venue – a 104-year-old building that began as the Selwyn and most recently went by the prosaic American Airlines Theatre – to honor its late artistic director Todd Haimes.

The 42nd Street venue officially became the Todd Haimes Theatre in a dedication ceremony tonight. The name change was announced last June, and becomes official just in time to welcome its first tenant: The revival of John Patrick Shanley’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt: A Parable, directed by Scott Ellis and starring Tyne Daly and Liev Schreiber, begins previews this Friday ahead of a February 29 opening night.

The venue’s name change was made to honor, in the words of the company, the “extraordinary dedication to the institution [Haimes] called home, and his enormous contributions to Roundabout and the entire theatre community.”

Haimes, the Roundabout’s artistic director and chief executive for nearly 40 years,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Waltons
Image
"Good night, John-Boy. Good night, Elizabeth. And good night, daddy. Good night, son. And good night, mama. Good night, Mary Ellen. Good night, Jim Bob." Even if you've never watched a single moment of the classic TV show "The Waltons," the impact the series has had on television continues on even to this day. With the series' roots stemming back all the way to one of the most hated episodes of "The Twilight Zone" in history, references to "The Waltons" have extended all the way to films like 2016's "The Nice Guys," where Matt Bomber's villainous Dr. Malek is given the code name "John Boy" as he shares a similar facial birthmark to John-Boy actor Richard Thomas.

Created by Earl Hamner Jr., "The Waltons" centered on the titular family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II, based on Hamner Jr.'s book "Spencer's Mountain." With a...

Early '00s TV Shows That Still Hold Up
Image
The early 2000s are a nostalgic time for television, whether audiences are watching shows like Friends or Gilmore Girls or sitting down for movies like Moulin Rouge! (2001) or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). The shows that appeared on cable and primetime changed the future of television.

Even with all the good television, there were certainly some problematic moments on television in the '90s and 2000s. While no show is perfect, that are some that continue to hold up, even among higher scrutiny.

Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000)

Freaks and Geeks kicked off a decade of both incredible and, in some cases, unfortunately, short-lived television. Set in a suburb of Detroit in the early '80s, Freaks and Geeks is centered around the high school experiences of the Weir siblings, Lindsay (Linda Cardellini) and Sam (John Francis Daley). Lindsay is part of the "freaks," a group of rebellious slackers that includes...

What Is The Department Of Damage Control? MCU History & Marvel Comics Origin Explained
Image
The Department of Damage Control has a rich history in Marvel Comics, specializing in repairing property damage caused by superhero battles. In the MCU, Damage Control was originally created to clean up after the Battle of New York and has recently transformed into a police-style force hunting down superpowered individuals. The change in Damage Control's role could pave the way for major mutant storylines in the future MCU, potentially introducing the X-Men and adapting the use of Stark drones as Sentinels.

Marvel Studios' Department of Damage Control has a rich history in Marvel Comics and in the MCU, though its role has significantly changed in recent years. In the world of the MCU, many organizations exist in the background of the action, not only covert intelligence organizations such as Shield and Hydra, but also more public-facing companies such as the Department of Damage Control. Stephen Sondheim at the Tony Awards: All 75 wins from ‘West Side Story’ to ‘Assassins’
Image
Stephen Sondheim has almost never been more popular than in the two years since his passing in November 2021. In that time, celebrated revivals of “Company,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd” have come to Broadway, and successful remounting of “Assassins” and “Merrily We Roll Along” have played Off-Broadway, which is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works.

This fall will once again spotlight Sondheim. The tremendously successful Off-Broadway run of “Merrily” starring Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe opens on Broadway on October 10, which will mark the first remounting since its original, unsuccessful run in 1981. In addition, his final musical “Here We Are,” which is based on two Luis Buñuel films—“The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel”—will have its highly-anticipated world premiere Off-Broadway, opening on October 22.

In honor of another “season of Sondheim,” take a look back at every single Tony...

Emmys: Costars competing for Best Drama Actress
Image
While the first Primetime Emmys battle involving two male drama series costars occurred in 1957, it took until 1980 for there to be such a showdown in the corresponding female category. In the time since on-screen mother and daughter Sada Thompson and Kristy McNichol (“Family”) faced off, 11 more pairs of dramatic lead actresses have been pitted against each other at the Emmys between one and six times each. Scroll through our chronological photo gallery to learn more about the 23 separate cases of dual Best Drama Actress nominations.

The largest portion of this category’s costar face-offs is credited to Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless of “Cagney & Lacey.” After Gless replaced Daly’s first season costar, Meg Foster, the pair never failed to jointly earn TV academy recognition, leading to a record four wins for Daly and two for Gless (1986-1987).
