These Are the Worst Sitcoms From the Creator of ‘Gilligan’s Island’
Image
Lightning struck twice for sitcom producer Sherwood Schwartz, who created two monster TV hits within the span of a single decade. Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch were even more popular in syndication than they were in prime time, airing for years in countries around the world.

But just because Schwartz created two treasures doesn’t mean he was an infallible comedy Midas — the producer touched plenty of shows that failed to turn into gold. In fact, here are four of the worst comedies created by Sherwood Schwartz…

1 It’s About Time

It’s About Time, a sci-fi comedy series that Schwartz invented in between Gilligan and Brady Bunch, had all the hallmarks of his hits: a memorably wacky concept, veteran comedians from 1950s sitcoms and a bouncy theme song that explained the show’s premise.

It's about time for you and me

To meet these people of amazing feats...

The Brady Bunch Had A Lot Of Spin-Offs You Didn't Realize Existed
Image
Sherwood Schwartz's 1969 sitcom "The Brady Bunch" was progressive and retrogressive at the same time. On the one hand, it vaunted the virtues of remarrying and finding new families, showing that step-siblings and second spouses could produce as harmonious a domestic unit as more traditional nuclear families. On the other hand, the characters were clean-cut and virtuous to a cartoonish degree, only expressing the blandest sorts of domestic turmoil. It's easy to be harmonious when every member of the family is scrupulous and clean. The show was more about mild, silly pet peeves than about legitimately hard-hitting clashes of character.

Of course, "hard-hitting" was not Schwartz's métier. He was a writer of high-concept, light-hearted comedies. This was, after all, the "Gilligan's Island" guy. He wasn't about to skew into Neil Labute family dramas with "The Brady Bunch."

And "The Brady Bunch" was huge. It lasted a gangbusters 117 episodes over its five seasons,...

Bruce Vilanch on the Worst TV Moments in History, from the Wookiee Christmas ‘Star Wars’ Special to a ‘Brady Bunch’ Blowout
Image
Since getting his big break crafting jokes for Bette Midler in the early 1970s, Emmy-winning comedy writer and personality Bruce Vilanch has found success writing for the small screen and stage. But by his own admission, the scribe behind 25 Academy Award ceremonies and more than his fair share of Miss Universe and USA pageants has also penned some real flops.

In his new book, “It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time: The Worst TV Shows in History and Other Things I Wrote,” Vilanch walks readers through some of the most ill-conceived projects he’s been attached to over the years — from 1978’s “The Star Wars Holiday Special” to the now infamous 1989 Oscars ceremony that opened with Rob Lowe and Snow White pirouetting to “Proud Mary.”

“‘It was a terrible idea, and I shouldn’t have gotten involved’ didn’t even occur to us at the time,” Vilanch told IndieWire on a Zoom call,...

Here’s How Much Gwyneth Paltrow Earned for All 3 Iron Man Movies Combined
Image
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow was already an Oscar-winning star when she joined the MCU with Iron Man. Playing Tony Stark’s secretary/love interest Pepper Potts, Paltrow was the non-metallic heart of Stark and she went on to appear in subsequent films in the MCU such as Iron Man 2 and Avengers: Endgame.

Paltrow has focused on her controversial wellness brand Goop for the past few years, reportedly bringing up her net worth to $200 million. The actress still appears in a few films but her stint in the Iron Man franchise is probably her most lucrative acting gig. While it has not been disclosed, the films’ success has undoubtedly got her great paydays.

The Arrowverse Perfected a 56-Year TV Trend by Setting Up 1 of the Best DC Shows of All Time
Image
The Arrowverse was built upon the culmination of several DC characters pioneering their own television shows on the CW network. However, most fans forget that the entirety of that television universe was spawned from the creativity and the brilliance of the original Arrow show. Starring Stephen Amell as the Emerald Archer, Arrow saw a reimagined look at the character, taking away his quippy lines and Robin Hood-esque design in favor of something darker, as The Dark Knight movies had just shown how gritty superheroes can be. The show was a smash hit, which earned it another season. A new season meant new ideas, and the creators of Arrow thought about the possibilities of the greatest DC universe, eventually leading to the introduction of Grant Gustin as a notably fast scientist from the comics.

The Flash was originally supposed to be in a few episodes of Arrow, the third of which...

'Wow, I've Been Canceled': Brady Bunch Star Says Getting Political Killed a Planned Revival
Image
According to one star of the series, a revival of The Brady Bunch came close to happening, only to be squashed before getting to production. Allegedly, this was due in part to Susan Olsen publicly expressing her political opinions.

In the classic sitcom, Olsen played Cindy Brady, the youngest of Carol's (Florence Henderson) three girls. During a recent interview for the "Walk Away Campaign" podcast (per Vanity Fair), Olsen said that CBS Studios had a planned Brady Bunch revival series in the works. The show was said to have followed Cindy and her siblings, now as adults, with Olsen's character portrayed as a libertarian podcaster. However, it's alleged that the network wound up scrapping the project due to Olsen's conservative views, particularly about her support for Donald Trump and criticism of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The Brady Bunch: Did Any of the Cast Members Date Each Other?
Image
The blended family from The Brady Bunch were not as popular during their original run on ABC as they are today. The ’70s sitcom became a favorite among children and teenagers, who loved to see the sibling dynamics between the three brothers and three sisters. However, they apparently shared more than sibling love off-screen.

The Brady Bunch saw Robert Reed’s Mike Brady and Florence Henderson’s Carol Martin marry each other, both having been married earlier with kids. Mike has three sons—Greg, Peter, and Bobby—and Carol has three daughters—Marcia, Jan, and Cindy. The couple adopts each other’s children and the sitcom explores this unconventional big family.

Rita McKenzie, Star of ‘Ethel Merman’s Broadway,’ Dies at 76
Image
Rita McKenzie, the actress and singer best known for her boisterous performances in the one-woman show Ethel Merman’s Broadway, died Saturday in Los Angeles after a long illness, her husband, talent agent Scott Stander, announced. She was 76.

McKenzie first starred on stage as the powerful Merman — star of such iconic Broadway hits as Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun, Gypsy and Hello, Dolly! — in New York in 1988.

Belting out tunes like “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “I Got Rhythm” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” McKenzie toured throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia in what many consider the longest-running one-woman show in theatrical history.

She also starred in parts that Merman made famous: Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes!, the gunslinger in a 50th anniversary tour of Annie Get Your Gun and Rose in Gypsy.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Brady Bunch
Image
Anyone who grew up in the 1970s can tell you the story of a lovely lady, who was bringing up three very lovely girls, and a man named Brady, who was busy with three boys of his own. Of course, one day, the lady met this fellow, and the rest is TV history. When Carol Martin (Florence Henderson) married Mike Brady (Robert Reed), all six of their children came together, along with their trusty maid Alice (Ann B. Davis), to become the sitcom family known as "The Brady Bunch."

"The Brady Bunch" is one of the most beloved and memorable sitcoms of all time. The adolescent antics of Greg (Barry Williams), Peter (Christopher McKnight), Bobby (Mike Lookinland), Marcia (Maureen McCormick), Jan (Eve Plumb), and Cindy (Susan Olsen) made for plenty of comedy and drama as the bunch dealt with the trials and tribulations of a blended family, sibling rivalries, growing up,...

The Brady Bunch House Hits the Market After Interior Renovations to Match the TV Show
Image
If you've been fantasizing about living in the actual house from The Brady Bunch, as if you had just stepped straight into the sitcom from your living room, you are in luck... as long as you have $5.5 million to spend. The Los Angeles house used for the exterior shots of The Brady Bunch house is back on the market, but with some major changes. Located at 11222 Dilling St., the home was previously up for sale in 2018 when it was purchased by HGTV. The network then invited back the actors who played the Brady Bunch children to help renovate the home's interiors alongside HGTV stars, making the inside look just like the set that was used for the sitcom, complete with the familiar staircase.

The process was documented for the HGTV special A Very Brady Renovation, which drew 28 million viewers when it aired. The special notably brought back cast members Barry Williams...

Alex Borstein is looking to score Emmy hat trick with final season of ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’
Image
“The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” is coming to an end as its fifth and final season streams on Amazon Prime Video. The successful comedy, which has bagged 20 Emmys to date including a Best Comedy Series win in 2018, follows Rachel Brosnahan‘s titular Miriam “Midge” Maisel who, after her husband leaves, pursues a career in stand-up comedy. A key character in this pursuit is Alex Borstein‘s Susie Myerson, who runs the Gaslight Café, where Midge first begins her stand-up career.

As Susie, Borstein delivers a no-holds-barred performance as she creates an unorthodox, straight-talking, hilarious character who becomes Midges’ manager later in the series. Critics think she is deserving of another Emmy nomination for this fifth and final season of “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.” Among those singing her praises:

Kevin Fallon (The Daily Beast) wrote: “Alex Borstein, who has won two deserved Emmy Awards for her performance as Susie, gives a tour de force this season—which,...

Alex Borstein poised to be 5th supporting comedy actress to claim an Emmy 3 years in a row
Image
Judging by Gold Derby’s combined odds, Alex Borstein seems destined to make a triple play this year, thanks to her performance as Susie Myerson, the scathingly uncensored and tomboyish sidekick and manager of Rachel Brosnahan‘s stand-up comic Midge on Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” If the actress — who also has a Emmy for voicing Lois Griffin on the animated series “Family Guy” — goes 3-for-3, she will be the fifth supporting funny lady to do so. The members of this club are sitcom legends Valerie Harper (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”), Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) and Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”). Not bad company at all.

Right now, Borstein is way ahead of her closest competition, Annie Murphy of “Schitt’s Creek,” among users of Gold Derby’s prediction site. She boasts 1146 backers and 9/2 odds while Murphy has 423 total votes and 5/1 odds.

On Season 3 of “Mrs. Maisel,...

A Very Brady Renovation (2019)
‘The Brady Bunch’ Stars Get Nostalgic at the ‘A Very Brady Renovation’ Premiere Party
A Very Brady Renovation (2019)
“And that’s the way we remade the Brady House…” chimes the theme song of “A Very Brady Renovation,” the upcoming Hgtv series that follows the recreation of the classic TV set inside the L.A. property which served as the home’s on-camera exterior.

It’s just the latest stop as the nostalgia train keeps on, keeps on, keeps on moving long after “The Brady Bunch” wrapped up its initial five-season run in 1974. The series has spawned spin-off shows, movies, albums, a variety hour and a cartoon, not to mention the millions of dollars of merchandise sold around the series. But this latest update proves far superior to any “Brady Bunch” lunch box.

“This has been a special one because we didn’t have to play Bobby and Cindy — we could be ourselves. And it’s the 50th anniversary [of the premiere],” “Brady Bunch” actor Mike Lookinland explained to reporters at the...

‘A Very Brady Renovation’: Here’s The Story Of A Brady Kids Reunion 15 Years In The Making – TCA
The beloved Brady 6 are back together after more than 15 years thanks to Hgtv’s four-part series, A Very Brady Renovation. During the show’s presentation at the TCA press tour at the Beverly Hilton, The Brady Bunch alums Barry Williams (Greg), Maureen McCormick (Marcia), Christopher Knight (Peter), Eve Plumb (Jan), Mike Lookinland (Bobby) and Susan Olsen (Cindy) convened onstage to dish on the reunion.

Through the years, there have been a number of Brady revivals and reunions that have involved some of the original cast members, but for this one, it was important that everyone was involved.

“There are so many elements that had to come together to make this thing work. It’s almost unfathomable,” Williams said. “I love these people. We’ve had great relationships our entire lives but not all together at the same time. It was crucial to have every single person on this stage in that show.

Florence Henderson's TV kids are mourning the Brady Bunch actress.

"She's just one I could've spent more time with," shared Knight, on the verge of tears.

Henderson died from heart failure on Thursday, surrounded by her four children, her rep told Et. It's safe to say that over the years, Henderson remained America's favorite TV mom, but for Knight, she meant so much more.

"There was one show where we were in the backyard with our mitts and throwing the ball around, and she was dressed like she was ready to play with us, and I think it was at that point I thought she was really cool," Knight recalled. "She could be one of the guys and very much like mom...

She added, "I was the only person on the show that was a mother in real life.

Retro-tastic! Nick at Nite First Launched 30 Years Ago This Week
Did you grow up in the age of color TV but still learned to love Dick Van Dyke and I Love Lucy?

If so, there's a good chance you have Nick at Nite to thank. Classic television reruns were plentiful in the '80s and '90s, but Nick at Nite – which launched on July 1, 1985 – consolidated decades of American TV into one place.

Thirty years later, it's still going strong.

In honor of the programming block's anniversary this week, we're looking back at how the network came to be and how it's changed over the past three decades.

Hey, remember Arts TV?...

Ann B. Davis in The Brady Bunch (1969)
Barry Williams (famous for playing Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch) is embroiled in a scandal involving his ex and their three-year-old child.

Elizabeth Kennedy says that she was Barry's girlfriend for seven years and that Williams has left her and their daughter destitute, but Williams denies the claims.

News: The Brady Bunch Movie Turns 20!

"It's a funny thing how you get built up and people want to take you down and that kind of thing," Williams told The Huffington Post. "It's not about custody. It's about child support."

Kennedy told Et's Brooke Anderson her side of the story.

"What he does when he's done with a relationship is he tries to eradicate the person completely from his life," Kennedy said.

Brooke asked Kennedy if she considered Williams to be a deadbeat dad.

StreamFix: 11 Netflix Movies to Watch Before They Expire on Jan. 1
Henry Fonda, John Carradine, Jane Darwell, Dorris Bowdon, Frank Darien, and Russell Simpson in The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
The new year is almost here and that means it's time for one of Netflix's ceremonial killing sprees. The streaming service is taking out its big, streamy chainsaw and dicing up some of your favorite films. Come January 1, these classics will be gone. De-Netflixed. De-available from The Big Red Website. So snatch them up and at least pretend to watch them so that you don't look dumb when a bow-tied homosexual approaches you at a New Year's party with his quips about "Kramer Vs. Kramer." He needs validation and your genuine, informed laughter will appease him.  Here are the 11 most important titles to stream before 2015. "Titanic" Kate Winslet at her most Alex Kingston. Leonardo DiCaprio at his most Jodie-Foster-at-age-14. Iceberg at its most January Jones.  "12 Angry Men" Though Henry Fonda is a towering film icon, it is shocking how almost none of his films are discussed anymore. Maybe "The Grapes of Wrath...

Pepper Potts From 'Iron Man' Was Modeled After Ann B. Davis Character
Beloved sitcom actress Ann B. Davis, who passed away Sunday at age 88, was perhaps best known by modern audiences for her iconic role as Alice the housekeeper on '70s series "The Brady Bunch." But Davis had a stellar career long before she ever donned a maid's uniform, and it turns out that one of the actress's earliest roles made a huge impact on a current pop culture icon.

Davis gained acclaim for her performance as secretary Charmaine "Schultzy" Schultz on "The Bob Cummings Show," earning four Emmy nominations -- and nabbing two statuettes -- for Best Supporting Actress from 1955 to 1959. The character was universally popular, and even helped Davis get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, well before she joined the Bradys.

Davis and Schultzy were so revered that the character even made her way into Marvel comics, in the form of Pepper Potts, the love interest...

Alice From 'The Brady Bunch' Films Pens Touching Tribute to Ann B. Davis
Ann B. Davis, the actress who brought to life beloved housekeeper Alice on "The Brady Bunch," and who died this weekend at age 88, has inspired numerous fond remembrances since news of her passing was first announced.

One of the most touching tributes to the late actress comes from another Alice: Henriette Mantel, the woman who donned the character's iconic blue uniform in 1995's "The Brady Bunch Movie" and its 1996 follow-up, "A Very Brady Sequel."

In an essay for Yahoo! Movies, Mantel wrote that she was at first stunned to see her own photo accompanying some of Davis' obituaries, then angered that anyone would confuse her with such an acting legend. ("Have you no respect for Brady fans all over the world?" Mantel recalled thinking when she discovered the mix-up.)

Mantel then detailed the day she met Davis, on the set of the first "Brady" movie, in which Davis had a small cameo.

Ann B. Davis, Alice of “The Brady Bunch,” dead at 88
Ann B. Davis, Alice of The Brady Bunch, died yesterday. While some might look at her age of 88 and dismiss her passing as a life well traveled, I can’t help but picture the vibrant maid named Alice who spent five TV years keeping the Brady family in line.
