The first episode of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” needs to accomplish a lot. There’s setting the scene, introducing the Menendez family (beyond dysfunctional), and portraying a brutal real-life slaying of José and Kitty by their sons, Lyle and Erik. Oh, and then show the funeral, complete with a somber Milli Vanilli needle drop. (Which really happened.) That’s a lot of tone, but the anchor of the episode and of the season itself is the central murder.

“From the get-go, one of the things that Ryan [Murphy] said was that he wanted you to feel how awful that moment is, to remember that they’re murderers,” Episode 1 editor Peggy Tachdjian told Indiewire. “Because it sets up the whole season. He was like, ‘I want everyone to always remember that the murder was brutal.”

The sequence is remarkable in its unflinching recreation of the violence but also of the cold bloodness.

King Kong did not, in fact, have, er, doo-doo on Denzel Washington at the turn of the 21st century. Netflix has dropped the first teaser for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which will debut on Sept. 19.

“The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s true crime anthology series, “Monsters,” which debuted in 2022 with the chilling story of serial murderer Jeffrey Dahmer, starring Evan Peters.

Season 2 will follow the 1996 conviction of the Menendez brothers for the murders of their parents. Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch lead the series as Lyle and Erik Menendez, while Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny will play José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.

Netflix has dropped the first look of its upcoming series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” All episodes of the drama will premiere on the streamer globally Sept. 19.

The teaser starts with a family photo of José (Javier Bardem), Kitty (Chloë Sevigny), Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) Menendez. After the seemingly perfect portrait is taken, all of their faces fall.

“I need to know what’s going on with you and the boys,” Kitty says in a voiceover as the camera continues to click.

The series details the events leading up to and following the events of two brothers as they fatally shot their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion on August 20, 1989. Aaron Hernandez’s journey from NFL pro to convicted murderer gets the scripted TV treatment in the latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s American Story franchise, American Sports Story, the trailer for which debuted Wednesday.

In the series, which premieres on FX on Sept. 17, Josh Andrés Rivera stars as Hernandez, who is tormented by his violent urges. “You don’t know what kind of thoughts I have. It’s like a demon,” he says. “What if God made me this way?”

Various people around the athlete warn him about his uncontrollable urges as someone who is now in the public eye. “You can’t make mistakes, Aaron,” he’s told by a family member. He’s also warned, “The drugs, the sex, the anger — nobody’s questioning your athletic ability, Aaron. They’re questioning your character.”

FX is diving into the brutal and complex story of Aaron Hernandez with the first trailer for “American Sports Story.” The limited series will premiere on FX on Sept. 17 and will be available to stream on Hulu.

The 10-episode limited series premieres on FX with two episodes on Sept. 17 and follows the development and family background of the NFL football player Aaron Hernandez — and his violent crimes, murder conviction and death by suicide.

Josh Andrés Rivera stars as Hernandez, who was drafted to the New England Patriots as a tight end in 2010 and played three seasons with the team. Before signing to the Patriots, he played football at the University of Florida. Patrick Schwarzenegger portrays Tim Tebow, Hernandez’s Florida Gators teammate and a rising NFL quarterback.

In the 2013 offseason, Hernandez was arrested and charged for the murder of Odin Lloyd. After being convicted, he died by suicide in prison in 2017.

The series, the first installment of sports anthology series “American Sports Story,” is based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.
