How Much Money Did Josh Brolin Lose by Rejecting James Cameron’s Avatar?
Image
Josh Brolin once passed on the chance to work with James Cameron on the first Avatar, and that role alone could have brought in millions for the actor. In the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor revealed that he was offered to play Colonel Miles Quaritch, and the part later went to Stephen Lang. The antagonist of Cameron’s fantasy world was paid $2 million for Avatar: The Way of Water (via Collider).

This means that apart from a confirmed $2 million, Brolin also let go of similar paychecks that he could have received for each movie in the franchise. And we’re not even counting the bonuses or the career boost that he’d receive from starring in these movies. So, let’s look at how much Brolin could have made from the Avatar saga, and why he never got on board.

Why Josh Brolin Turned Down Stephen Lang’s Avatar...

Josh Brolin reveals the character he almost played in the Avatar movies
Image
Josh Brolin is a busy man. From appearing in films like Avengers: Endgame and Dune: Part II to the newly released horror epic Weapons, he's become a prolific actor over the past several years. But as it turns out, he was almost in a couple of even more high-profile blockbusters, in the form of James Cameron’s Avatar films.

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor revealed that he was approached by Cameron to participate in his then-upcoming visual effects-heavy behemoth, Avatar. The role that was offered to him was the character of Miles Quaritch.

Quaritch is the chief antagonist of not only the first Avatar film, but has gone on to become a unifying thread and threat across the sequels as well. In actuality, the role is played by Stephen Lang, but Brolin reveals that Cameron came to him first.

Despite this, Brolin ultimately turned down the offer,...

Josh Brolin Talks Possible Thanos Return In Avengers: Doomsday And Why He Doesn't Regret Saying No To Lanterns
Image
Josh Brolin first played Thanos in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, and later took centre stage in Avengers: Infinity War. The Mad Titan was the latter movie's lead in many ways, and while he was beheaded in the opening moments of Avengers: Endgame, the villain later returned as a Variant.

Being snapped out of existence by Iron Man was where Thanos' story ended, though What If...? showed us that he still has plenty of Variants scattered throughout the Multiverse. We'll meet King Thanos as part of an upcoming Disneyland ride, but what about Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars?

Talking to Josh Horowitz, Josh Brolin reflected on playing Thanos and confirmed that he'd happily reprise the role if the Russo Brothers come calling.

"There's a level of absurdity that I enjoy so much...I've said it a million times, but it goes back to black box theatre, where you have...

Ghosts of Hiroshima: James Cameron Is Afraid of His Next Movie After Avatar: Fire and Ash
Image
James Cameron, the man who dove into the wreck of the Titanic and waged war in Pandora, now confesses he’s afraid. Not of failure. Not of scale. But of the terrifying truth at the heart of his next film, Ghosts of Hiroshima. The acclaimed director revealed in an exclusive conversation with DiscussingFilm that adapting Charles Pellegrino’s harrowing new book might be the single most daunting creative endeavor of his storied career.

This might be the most challenging film I ever make. I don’t 100% have my strategy fully in place [right now] for how I want to see it, for how I want to shield people from the horror, but still be honest.

With Ghosts of Hiroshima, Cameron steps outside the safety of fantasy and science fiction. Gone are the blue-skinned heroes and immersive worlds of Avatar. In their place: human ashes, melted shadows, and the searing screams of survivors.

James Cameron Reveals This Harry Potter Star Is a Key Player in 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' and Beyond

While most long-running franchises usually have source material that they draw from, like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones, which keeps the world going in several directions within the overarching storyline, James Cameron’s Avataris creating its mythos on the go. 'Avatar' Creator, 70, Shares an Update on Whether He Will Direct Future Movies
Image
As another installment of the global hit sci-fi film series Avatar bows into theaters this December, director James Cameron has reflected on his place in the future of the franchise. He still has two more movies in the Avatar universe to make, and given the significant time it takes to make each movie, there have been concerns that he might not be physically capable of seeing all the films to the end. Cameron turns 71 soon, but that won't slow him down — at least that's the plan. He plans to direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. "I mean, there's no reason not to. I’m healthy, I'm good to go," he told Empire when they asked if there was a possibility he could hand over the day-to-day duties of making the remaining films to another director.

Still, the future is unpredictable, and Cameron has thought about it. "I’m not going to rule it out,...

James Cameron Says He’s “Good to Go” for ‘Avatar’ 4 and 5 – No Plans to Step Aside
Image
James Cameron isn’t done with the Avatar world just yet. Even after spending nearly two decades building one of the biggest sci-fi franchises in movie history, he’s still fully committed to finishing what he started.

Some fans thought he might step back and let someone else direct Avatar 4 and 5, but Cameron says that’s not the plan.

Talking to Empire magazine in a feature on the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron made it clear he still wants to direct the final two films himself. “I mean, there’s no reason not to,” he said. “I’m healthy, I’m good to go.”

Still, he’s realistic about how demanding these massive productions can be. Making Avatar movies is a huge job, and he knows anything could happen in the next few years. “I’m not going to rule it out,” he added. “I mean, I’ve...

James Cameron Hints at Avatar TV Series to Further Expand the Epic Franchise
Image
Despite having Avatar: Fire and Ash and several other sequels in the works, director James Cameron is open to exploring Pandora beyond the big screen. The Oscar-winner recently hinted at a potential animated spinoff with unexpected stories.

Speaking with Empire, Cameron revealed plans for an Avatar animated anthology series, having approached Disney executives about the small-screen continuation. According to the filmmaker, the show would focus on stories that fall outside the narrative structure and character arcs seen in the movies. "I said [to Disney], 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world,'" he said. "There might even be an animated feature in there – it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature."

Cameron also said the series could explore "backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora?...

Game of Thrones alum steals spotlight as new villain in Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer
James Cameron
After several years of waiting and anticipation, maverick filmmaker James Cameron has unveiled the first look at the forthcoming third installment in his massive science-fiction series, Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The first trailer for the film premiered in theaters last week before being released on Monday, and while the footage is chock-full of jaw-dropping moments, one of the most buzzed about beats featured the introduction of Oona Chaplin, Game of Thrones alum, as the villainous Varang.

17th Malaga Film Festival 2014 - Day 8 | Juan Naharro Gimenez/GettyImages

The character marks a massive departure for the Avatar franchise’s established status quo and brings unexpected complexities to the larger thematic canvas that Cameron and his co-writers are weaving across the planned five-film saga.

The villains in both 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water were explicitly human. The first film told the starkly black-and-white morality tale of the native inhabitants of Pandora,...

James Cameron Open to Animated Avatar Anthology Series: 5 Bold Stories It Should Explore Next
Image
James Cameron revealed that he was interested in making an animated anthology series in his Avatar franchise as he released the trailer for the third movie, Fire and Ash. Cameron began the Avatar franchise back in 2009 and announced four more sequels, as well as other franchise media like comics, books, video games, and theme park attractions.

Cameron cited examples like The Animatrix, which expanded on the lore of The Matrix, as to how he would like to focus on individual stories in Pandora’s history. The Terminator filmmaker said that he had broached the subject with Disney, but nothing has come to fruition just yet (via Empire).

These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar…[It could deliver] backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.

Oona Chaplin in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)
New trailer for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ teases a fiery new chapter in the epic saga
Oona Chaplin in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)
20th Century Studios has dropped the breathtaking first trailer for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ the third chapter in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi saga — and it promises to take the franchise to new emotional and visual heights.

Following the events of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ ‘Fire and Ash’ thrusts Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their family into their most harrowing trial yet. As tensions boil across Pandora, a ruthless new threat emerges from both human and Na’vi factions — one that could burn everything the Sullys have fought to protect.

The trailer opens with sweeping aerial shots of the ash-swept mountains of a once-thriving Na’vi region, now scarred by conflict. Narration from Neytiri sets the tone: “We defended our home. Now we fight for what remains.” From there, we glimpse stunning bioluminescent vistas, fire-drenched battlefields, and a mysterious new Na’vi tribe who wield flame...

Even so, for fans of Pandora, what's shown should be more than enough to convince them to buy a ticket in time for this holiday season.

Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer drops online; James Cameron’s epic saga continues this December
James Cameron
Released in 2009, director James Cameron’s film Avatar became the first movie to officially gross more than $2 billion. Then it took him thirteen years to get a sequel into theatres, so it wasn’t clear if the follow-up was going to be able to replicate that success. But then, sure enough, Avatar: The Way of Water also grossed more than $2 billion, paving the way for not only Avatar 3, or Avatar: Fire and Ash, (which is scheduled to reach theatres on December 19, 2025) but also Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – which will be released on December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031, respectively. With the release of the third film now just five months away, a trailer has dropped online and can be seen in the embed above!

Cameron crafted these sequels with a writers room that consisted of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (who worked on The Way of Water and Fire and Ash), Josh Friedman...

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer Blazes with Action, Family Bonds, and Vengeance
Image
James Cameron’s official trailer for the third Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is all about the visuals and action scenes, with very little dialogue. Jake and Neytiri continue to put family first in a fight to survive, with Jake warning his partner Neytiri not to live in hate. That appears to be easier said than done when everyone’s trying to kill you.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return to lead the cast as Jake and Neytiri. The third film of the franchise also stars Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, and Kate Winslet. New ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Visuals Tease the Most Breathtaking Chapter Yet
Image
James Cameron is back again with another Avatar film, and this one’s called Avatar: Fire and Ash. It’s the third movie in the Avatar series and a direct follow-up to Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out in 2022.

This new movie is still all about Pandora, the stunning alien world, and once again Cameron is directing, co-writing, co-editing, and producing the film. He worked on the script along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, as well as Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025, after a long journey filled with delays—nine of them to be exact. The Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer Brings Back The Franchise's Best Character
Image
James Cameron has been responsible for helping bring to life some of the most beloved and memorable weird little (and not so little) guys in all of cinema. From the T-800 and T-1000 to the Xenomorph Queen and the iceberg that brought down the Titanic, Cameron knows how to weaponize iconography to make a memorable movie character. Still, in his 43-year-long career, Cameron has never reached the creative, emotional, and stylistic highs of his work in "Avatar: The Way of Water" — specifically the creation of its true star, Payakan the young tulkun (aka the space whale).

Somehow inspired by Mike Wazowski from "Monsters Inc.", Payakan leaped out of the water to immediately steal the heart of every person who saw "Avatar: The Way of Water." It's not hard to see why. He's adorable, he's a giant space whale, he has high intelligence, a tragic backstory, and also a penchant for killing human hunters.

The Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer Teases The Biggest Moment In The Series So Far
Image
James "never doubt" Cameron has made some of the biggest pieces of cinematic spectacle of all time and has the receipts to prove it if any executive doubts his skills (as the "Titanic" director did while making the first "Avatar"). Having three of the top five highest-grossing movies of all time under his belt, few things are as certain in Hollywood these days as Cameron knowing exactly what audiences want to pay to see in theaters — and watch it over and over again. After so many box office pundits were forced to eat their words as "Avatar: The Way of Water" became a box office juggernaut and a film everyone was talking about, anticipation for its follow-up, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," are sky high. It also helps that the movie is arriving three years after its predecessor (as opposed to the 13 years that passed between "Avatar" and "The Way of Water").

First ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer Expands the World of Pandora With New Tribes and Creatures
Image
James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is finally on the horizon.

The third chapter in his epic sci-fi saga, which began with 2009’s “Avatar” and continued with 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is arriving in theaters this Christmas. And the first trailer for “Fire and Ash” has debuted after an exclusive opening weekend run attached to “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” It’s a doozy.

Picking up right where “The Way of Water” left off, the trailer deals with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and their family following the death of one of their children at the end of the last movie. At one point, Jake tells her, “You cannot live like this baby – in hate.” All of the hallmarks of the “Avatar” series thus far are present – spray-painted-on-the-side-of-a-van fantasy imagery, crazy creatures, an ethereal beauty and action sequences that can only spring from the mind...

‘Avatar: Fire & Ash’ Trailer Officially Released Online: James Cameron Returns With Fiery Stunner
Image
The action-packed first trailer for James Cameron’s next Avatar fantasy epic has been officially released online (below).

Disney has revealed the trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash following the footage leaking after the teaser was put exclusively in theaters last week in front of Fantastic Four: First Steps.

One raved that the trailer was “some of the most beautiful footage I’ve seen all year [and I was] struck by the real sense of doom and rage — fist fights inside of cosmic volcanoes, heroes terrified, huge aerial battles.” While an entertainment writer wrote, “[The trailer] started out as ‘meh, more of the same’ and ended with ‘yup, another billion to James Cameron.'” And a film critic wrote: “The visuals are (somehow) on another level. There is no doubt in my mind that this Will be the biggest movie of 2025, and ‘epic’ doesn’t feel like it does this trailer justice.”

Pandora Is Engulfed in Flames in First ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer
Image
It’s been over two years since Avatar: The Way of Water swam into theaters everywhere, and now James Cameron is officially back with the next chapter in his legendary sci-fi story. Disney has finally released the first trailer forAvatar: Fire and Ash ahead of its December 19 release date, signaling a return to a different side of Pandora. The first official Fire and Ash trailer turns subverts expectations by teasing a showdown between the Ash people and the Metkayina, who took in Jake Sully in Avatar 2. It appears Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) will somehow get the Mangkwan clan to side with him in his relentless pursuit of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), despite most fans expecting that they would help Jake, similar to the Metkayina.

Both Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return to star as Jake Sully and Neytiri in Avatar: Fire and Ash, with Lang also set for another...

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer: Jake Sully’s Family Fights Evil Na’vi in Stunning Footage From James Cameron’s Third Movie
Image
Disney has released the first trailer for director James Cameron’s third “Avatar” movie, titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” It’s scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2025, three years after “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

Just like “The Way of Water” introduced the aquatic Metkayina clan of Pandora, “Fire and Ash” will debut a new group called the Ash People. At the 2024 D23 Expo, Cameron came on stage to debut a teaser to attendees, which showed the fearsome, soot-covered tribe who danced around a giant fire pit.

“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said at the 2024 D23 Expo. “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before,” Cameron said during the presentation. “We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”

5 Important Details We Just Learned From The Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer
Image
I'd ask if we're ready to step back into the world of Pandora, but some of us never even left in the first place. After listening to visionary James Cameron hype up his threequel for months and months (and months), we've finally received our first look at the official trailer ... along with the hints and teases of everything we can expect from the next stage of this epic, otherworldly family saga.

If Cameron is destined to spend the rest of his career exploring the struggles of the extraterrestrial Na'vi in their never-ending fight against oppressive humans, well, luckily, all that time and money appear to have been well worth it.

The footage suggests that not much has changed in Cameron’s approach in telling the Avatar epic, but then why would it when the franchise has already made billions? Revealing our first look at new tribes, heroes, and villains, those already enamored with the Avatar saga will quickly become teary-eyed when presented with this tease of another glorious epic.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer: Who Knows What James Cameron’s Next Franchise Entry Is About, but It Sure Looks Good
Image
How’s this for a logline? When it comes to the third film in James Cameron’s massive “Avatar” franchise, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” Disney will only share that this new installment “takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family.” That’s all assumed, right? And, for now, that’s about as much plot as we’re going to get in the “Fire and Ash” realm.

The film’s first trailer? It adheres to the same idea. When Disney showed the trailer to a select group of press last week — before a planned rollout alongside “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which opened on Friday, and after a very brief leak of the first look earlier this month — the studio generously played it three times in a row. Each time,...

The imagery on display in the Fire and Ash trailer indicates that Cameron and his creative team are continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible with digital effects and motion capture.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Gets Two New Empire Magazine Covers Highlighting Oona Chaplin's Villainous Varang
Image
The first teaser trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently playing in theaters before The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It leaked online in HD earlier a couple of weeks ago, but Disney moved quickly to take those down.

In the meantime, we have two new covers from Empire Magazine putting the spotlight on the Ash People/Mangkwan Clan and their leader, the villainous Varang. We've explored Pandora's forests and seas, but this corner of the planet has a far more sinister feel to it.

"Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that," filmmaker James Cameron explained earlier this year. "She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil."

"One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic," he teased. "We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad,...

Avatar: Fire & Ash Image Reveals Full Look At New Na'vi Villain Varang
Image
The new villain in Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally been revealed in full form. Set for a December 19, 2025, release, the threequel will feature Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the rest of their family as they navigate an increasingly dangerous world. All the while, Quaritch (Stephen Lang) recruits a new Na'vi threat to his cause: the Ash Clan.

A series of posters provided by Empireoffers a full look at the mysterious Ash Clan. Led by Oona Chaplin's Varang, the Fire Na'vi do not live in harmony with nature, and they instead equip themselves for war however they can. Check out the images below, which offer a detailed glimpse at Varang and her people:

The first cover sees Varang against a fiery backdrop, as she directs her people to march to war. It features a full-body shot of Varang, who appears to be wearing thin cloth and decorative red war paint.

Fire cults and burning banshees: has Avatar: Fire and Ash sent Pandora all the way to hell?
James Cameron
In the third instalment of cinema’s shiny blue 3D eco fable, James Cameron drags us to the volcanic badlands to meet the ever so angry Ash People

Say what you like about James Cameron, but the man has somehow made three films, umpteen extraterrestrial biomes, and one endlessly grieving smurf wolf pack out of the phrase “don’t touch that tree”. Now, the veteran sci-fi film-maker returns with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third instalment in cinema’s shiniest blue 3D eco fable. And from a preview of the trailer (to be released before showings of The Fantastic Four: First Steps this weekend) this is going to be yet another jaw-dropping, box-office smashing triumph of elemental, stereoscopic worldbuilding – or possibly a very long and very heavy bioluminescent deforestation story, depending on your point of view.

Where The Way of Water took us out to sea to commune with whales who cry in subtitles,...

Avatar: Fire and Ash Trailer Reaction – Here’s what to expect…
Oona Chaplin in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)
Disney recently gave press an exclusive look at the first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third chapter in James Cameron’s ongoing sci-fi saga. The footage offers a sweeping, high-stakes glimpse into the next stage of the story, and it is packed with action, tension, and new corners of Pandora.
