Image
On Friday night, the Ford Theater will transform into a living, breathing tribute to the city in which it resides for Get Lit’s multimedia production If I Awaken In Los Angeles.

The intention behind the show, which will blend spoken word, live music, dance and immersive video, is to serve as a “love letter to our city from all of the different cultures and communities,” Get Lit founder Diane Luby Lane tells Deadline.

“The diversity, the richness, the family, the joy, the culture, the music, it’s like we have so much here that we want to showcase,” she continued. “So we thought, what if we do that?”

In partnership with the LA Phil, the show will take center stage at the Ford on Friday night, bringing the audience on a journey through the neighborhoods and communities that shape Los Angeles from South Central to Boyle Heights to Chinatown,...

Steven Yeun’s role in The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender confirmed (and it’s not Wan)
Image
After months of speculation and fan theories swirling online, the mystery has finally been solved. We finally know who Steven Yeun is playing in the highly anticipated The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender movie, and it’s a reveal that’s taking fans by surprise.

Back in March 2025, Paramount Pictures announced that Yeun would be part of the cast for the new animated film. However, at that time, they did not reveal which character he would be portraying. So while fans knew Yeun was involved, his specific role remained a mystery.

Many fans speculated that Yeun would reprise his role as Avatar Wan in the upcoming movie. He had voiced the same character in The Legend of Korra. But instead, this new announcement reveals that he’s playing a much different character. One that fans of the original animated series know and love.

The Legend Of Aang: The Last Airbender Recast Zuko, But True Fans Know To Chill Out About It
Image
It's been 20 years since "Avatar: The Last Airbender" revolutionized TV, and now the franchise is expanding. We've had comics and novels for a while now, with fantastic stories that expand the world of "Avatar" and paint a picture of different eras and different reincarnations of the titular master of all four elements. But now we're going back to the screen, both big and small, with a new sequel series as well as a movie, "The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender."

Directed by Lauren Montgomery, who worked as a storyboard artist in season 3 of the show, and then as a supervising producer on the entirety of "The Legend of Korra," details on "The Legend of Aang" are scarce, but we do know it is a set after the original series, but before "Korra," following the main cast as young adults. Studio Mir will return to work on the animation alongside Flying Bark Productions,...

Avatar: The Last Airbender Movie: Before Zuko, Steven Yeun Played Another Role No One Remembers
Image
The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise will continue with the upcoming animated movie The Legend of Aang. Directed by Lauren Montgomery, the movie is a continuation of the Nickelodeon animated series and will follow Aang and his friends during their teenage years.

Creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko were present at the San Diego Comic-Con 2025 to promote the upcoming movie, where they confirmed Steven Yeun will be voicing the Fire Nation Prince Zuko (via IGN). However, Yeun’s casting as Zuko means his previous role in the franchise is being retconned, and here is everything you need to know about it.

Steven Yeun’s Forgotten Role in The Legend of Korra Explained

Actor Steven Yeun rose to prominence with the role of Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead. However, Yeun also has a prolific voice acting career, having voiced Mark Grayson in the smash-hit Amazon Prime animated series Invincible.

Avatar Creator Reveals Invincible Star as Zuko in The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender Movie
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender has found its new Zuko. At San Diego Comic Con 2025, the co-creators of Nickelodeon's smash anime-inspired franchise revealed who will play the young adult version of the former Fire Prince, now Fire Lord.

In an interview with IGN, Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the co-creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, announced at San Diego Comic Con that Steven Yeun, best known for his roles in The Walking Dead and Invincible, will play Zuko in The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender Movie. He will inherit the role from the previous actor, Dante Basco, who played Zuko in all three seasons of the original Avatar series. However, this will not be Yeun's debut in the Avatar world, as he previously played Wan, the first canonical Avatar user in the series. Yeun was among the voice actors initially announced for The Legend of Aang, but...

Steven Yeun’s ‘The Legend of Aang’ Role Has Been Revealed, and It’s an ‘Avatar’ Fan-Favorite
Image
It's been no secret that the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender was being overhauled for the Gaang's new feature-length adventure, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. One role that was conspicuously left empty, though, was that of the fan-favorite Zuko — Aang's rival turned friend and fire-bending teacher who would go on to take his villainous father Ozai's (Mark Hamill) place as the Fire Lord. Although there was initially some speculation that Dante Basco would simply reprise the role, it's been confirmed that the actor taking up the mantle has, technically, been known this whole time. Series creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko confirmed in an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con that Steven Yeun, who was announced to be joining the sequel film in an unknown role back in March, will be voicing the now-adult Zuko when the sequel film arrives in 2026.

Why Avatar: The Last Airbender's Covid Resurgence Proved The Show Is The Voice Of A Generation Reflected On By Stars
Image
The cast of the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender universe discussed how the show's resurgence on Netflix during the Covid-19 pandemic affected their understanding of the cartoon's legacy.Avatar: The Last Airbender is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated shows ever made; it's acclaimed for its accessible storytelling, handling of complex subject matter, worldbuilding, and charming, relatable, and well-developed characters.

Having first aired on Nickelodeon between 2005 and 2008, long before streaming became ubiquitous, an entire generation of kids grew up with Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko, learning from their grief, pain, hope, and friendship. When the series was re-platformed by Netflix over 10 years later, it became a global sensation, especially during the lockdown days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the event, Cbr hosted a round table with the cast, including Zach Tyler Eisen, Jack DeSena, Michaela Jill Murphy, Jennie Kwan, Janet Varney and Dante Basco -- the respective voices of Aang, Sokka, Toph, Suko, Korra and Zuko.

'The Hero We Needed at the Time': Avatar: Legend of Korra Star Praises Lead as Og 'No-Nonsense' Female Role Model
Image
Fans of Avatar Korra in The Legend of Korrawill love her all over again after hearing what fellow franchise voice actor Richard Epcar had to say about her in a recent guest appearance.

Avatar Aang was once the young male lead of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Legend of Korra needed a protagonist who would fill the same role as Aang in the Avatar world while otherwise feeling fresh and new. Aside from having a much more brash and confrontational personality, Korra also shows how men and women alike can be the world's greatest hero with the power of the Avatar Cycle. Epcar, who voiced Saikhan in the series, commented on Korra's role directly during his appearance on the most recent official Avatar podcast, "Braving the Elements," co-hosted by Korra voice actor Janet Varney and Zuko voice actor Dante Basco.

'Zuko's Mom Is Kinda Disappointing': Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Calls Out Original Show's Most Tragic Parent

Despite being a series designed primarily for children, Avatar: The Last Airbender touches on a host of relatively dark and mature topics, one of which is awful parents. There are plenty of examples to be found across the Avatar franchise, with Fire Lord Ozai being an obvious pick, but also Toph's extremely overprotective parents and Asami's father, the industrialist Hiroshi Sato.

Avatar: The Last Airbender's Beloved Cabbage Merchant Almost Sold a Completely Different Vegetable
Image
Relatively few shows leave indelible marks on entire generations, but it's easy to see that Avatar: The Last Airbender did exactly that. From the huge list of quotable lines like Zuko's "That's rough, buddy" to memes like Uncle Iroh's "It's time for you to look inward...,"Avatar has become deeply ingrained in the general pop culture library. However, the Cabbage Merchant in particular has won over many hearts, despite typically only ever repeating some variant of his singular memorable line: "My cabbages!"

In the most recent episode of Braving the Elements, the official podcast hosted by Janet Varney (the voice of Korra) and Dante Basco (the voice of Zuko), they welcomed guest star James Sie, who voiced the Cabbage Merchant in the original series. 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Cast Thinks Zutara Should've Happened: "They Could've Snuck in a Kiss" [Exclusive]
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender was always meant to end with Aang and Katara together. From the moment the young Avatar was freed from the ice, creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko built up their relationship as the water bender became the one member of the Gaang he could lean on the most for support. All the battles and adventures across the four nations eventually culminated in the final scene of Book 3, where, with the war with the Fire Nation finally behind them, they sealed their love with a kiss. However, fans have always envisioned Katara hooking up with a different suitor in a perfect enemies-to-lovers scenario — Zuko. Even over 20 years since the series premiered, Zutara hopes are still alive, and, at Fan Expo Denver, Dante Basco and Mae Whitman were all too ready to lean into them. Well, at least Basco was.

"We All Burst Into Tears": 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Cast Remembers the Moment Greg Baldwin Became Uncle Iroh
Image
Few characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender are as beloved as Uncle Iroh. From the beginning of the series, he's shown to be one of the wisest and most understanding members of the Fire Nation, trying to guide Prince Zuko (Dante Basco) down the right path throughout his journey. In addition to excellent writing, he was also defined by a memorable voice-acting performance by the late great Mako that helped establish Iroh as this pure-hearted, yet fierce, grandfatherly figure. With the actor's tragic passing from cancer in 2006, however, the torch was passed to Greg Baldwin to finish out the series and take the iconic character into the future. During a panel at Fan Expo Denver moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt, the cast reminisced about Baldwin's first day in the booth and how he immediately, and emotionally, became Iroh in their eyes.

'Avatar' Voice Actress, 34, Reveals Original Plans for This Iconic 'Legend of Korra' Character
Image
It's been 11 years since the last episode of Avatar: The Legend of Korra aired on Nickelodeon, where the final scene featured Korra and Asami going to the Spirit World together as a couple. However, before she became the ally that many knew her for, it was recently revealed that she was initially planned to be Korra's enemy. Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Talks Original Show's Most Popular 'Toxic' Couple

Avatar: The Last Airbender wrapped up its original run in 2008, but fan debates about the series rage on -- particularly ships. It's not just viewers who are still arguing about which characters should have ended up together in the hit animated series, but the stars of the show, too.

'We Weren't Supposed to Do That': Avatar: The Last Airbender Creators Reveal the Nickelodeon Rule They Broke for Legend of Korra

Original Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko recently revealed that to give their show's animated follow-up, The Legend of Korra, a more cinematic feel, they did something they were "explicitly being told not to do" by the studio.

The duo rendered the series in HD widescreen despite being told not to -- a decision that accidentally put the network ahead of the entire industry. Dimartino and Konietzko shared the behind-the-scenes story during a recent episode of Braving the Elements -- the official retrospective podcast hosted by Janet Varney and Dante Basco, explaining how studio executive Mark Taylor greenlit the HD format upgrade against Nickelodeon's wishes.

"We weren't supposed to do that," Konietzko admitted during the podcast discussion. The creators first pushed for HD during Avatar's series finale but faced resistance. "Nickelodeon, with...

17 Years Later, I Still Feel Katara Should’ve Ended Up With Zuko Instead of Aang for a Good Reason
Image
The canon of Avatar: The Last Airbender makes a very potent cast for Zuko and Katara ending up together. While these characters ended up taking completely different paths in their lives, it is easy to spot that even subtextually, the narrative was always primed to serve a relationship between The Blue Spirit and the Painted Lady.

A slew of cast and crew members of Avatar: The Last Airbender believed that there was some merit in keeping Zuko and Katara together, and there have been some conflicting statements about the nature of how the relationship might have been in the cards, to be part of the official narrative. Whether it was or not is a different matter, because in terms of the flow of narrative, it makes complete sense that Zuko and Katara should have ended up together.

The narrative itself seemed to be a Zuko/Katara shipper.. Katara and Zuko...

Why Is Azula's Fire Blue In Avatar: The Last Airbender?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" rose to a whole other level of greatness in its second, and some would say best, season. ("Book 2: Earth.") A lot of that comes down to two new characters the show introduced to its ensemble.

The heroes got a new teammate: Toph (Michaela Jill Murphy), the blind earthbending prodigy. But they also had a new threat to contend with: Fire Nation Princess Azula (Grey DeLisle), who was hunting both Avatar Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) and her exiled brother Prince Zuko (Dante Basco). Smart, powerful, and ruthless, Azula is seemingly the "perfect princess." She's a firebending prodigy and success comes naturally to her.

Another detail that sets Azula apart is her firebending. In "Avatar," where people can bend one of the four classical elements, Firebenders transmute fire out of their own breath and chi and then control the flames.

One Episode Of Avatar: The Last Airbender Remade A Classic Western
Image
It's hard to find a TV series more beloved than "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Unlike some fandoms out there, the "Avatar" audience lives in shared adoration of the show — as harmonious as the four nations of water, earth, fire, and air once were. There are 61 "Avatar" episodes split across three seasons (or "Books"). Of those, season 2 "Zuko Alone" is often singled out as one of the best, if not the best, of the whole show. "Avatar" sequel "The Legend of Korra" even did a spiritual follow-up: "Korra Alone." The exiled prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko (Dante Basco) is introduced in season 1 hunting Avatar Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen). In season 2, Zuko falls even lower, losing even the meager resources he previously had. He has to put his Avatar hunt on pause because the Fire Nation is hunting him too.

"Zuko Alone" is both a standalone episode and one that cannot be skipped.

Here’s Why the New ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Movie Replaced the Original Cast
Image
The saga of Avatar Aang, the last Air Nomad frozen in ice for a hundred years and returning to bring balance to the world, constantly draws attention. The animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender became one of the most beloved franchises in the world when it debuted on Nickelodeon 20 years ago. Team Aang in that time period were mainly children as they battled the Fire Nation, stopping Fire Lord Ozai from dominating the world. Now, there is a new animated film in the works, previously titled Aang: The Last Airbender, which has been renamed as The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. This latest part of Aang's saga will follow Team Aang as young adults as they seek to bring peace to the world after the destructive war with the Fire Nation has ended. New Avatar Series Finally Has a Release Window
Image
One upcoming series set in the Avatar: The Last Airbender world just got a definitively disappointing update. Several new Atla projects are coming down the pipe in the next few years, but one of the most intriguing is Avatar: Seven Havens. The new series will be set after the events of Legend of Korra, and will follow an unnamed earthbending Avatar who is viewed as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. There had been no word on an official release date for the series, but the most recent issue of Toy World Magazine features a Paramount section, which confirms that the show will not debut until 2027 at the earliest. Seven Havens will be created by original Atla scribes Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, and casting information has yet to be revealed.

Seven Havens isn’t the only upcoming Avatar project to be excited about. The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender...

What Happened To Azula After Avatar: The Last Airbender?
Image
If there's a television canon, then "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is definitely in it. Since its debut on Nickelodeon in 2005, the animated fantasy show has remained beloved by its oldest fans and won the hearts of countless new ones. Personally, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has one of my favorite character ensembles in all of TV. Its leads were young enough for the target audience to relate to, yet complex enough for adults to be just as rewarded watching them.

Take Zuko (Dante Basco), the scarred prince of the Fire Nation who goes from villain to hero. Best redemption arc ever? It's up there. But standing next to Zuko as one of the show's most complex characters is his sister, Princess Azula. While her brother was always torn between good and evil, Azula relishes the latter. She seems like the "perfect" Princess: powerful, ruthless, and favored by her father Fire Lord...

Film Review: Asian Persuasion (2023) by Jhett Tolentino
Jhett Tolentino
Comedies tend to err on the side of cringe, and Jhett Tolentino‘s “Asian Persuasion” is no exception. The “Lingua Franca” (2019) producer tries their hand at humor, with mixed results. The film appeared at a handful of local film festivals two years ago, when it took home the Audience Award at the SoHo International Film Festival. Now, the film is coming to North American theaters this weekend, with limited theatrical release.

“Asian Persuasion” will play in 40+ theaters in North America from Friday, 21 March, 2025.

“Asian Persuasion” is as Asian American as it gets. Here, Mickey (Dante Basco) goes through a divorce with his fashion executive wife, Avery (Kc Concepcion). Mickey only realizes after signing the papers that his alimony is way beyond his means, as a humble Filipino-themed café owner in Woodside, Queens. With his Korean American best friend, Caspian (Kevin Kreider), they come up with a hare-brained scheme to offload...

Who Does Korra End Up With In The Avatar Universe?
Image
The 2010s and 2020s saw a surge of American children's media that put queerness front and center. Take the work of N.D. Stevenson, such as the Netflix series "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" and the animated film "Nimona," based on his graphic novel. From "Steven Universe" to "The Owl House," cartoons have gotten a lot gayer in the last decade.

And it is almost precisely a decade because Nickelodeon's "The Legend of Korra" is the show that broke down the dam in 2014. In the show's fourth and final season, Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her best friend, Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). A sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" is set in a fantasy world where people can bend one of the four elements. Korra, as the reincarnation of world defender the Avatar, can bend all four. If kids can accept a world that fantastical,...

Every Season Of Avatar: The Last Airbender Ranked
Image
Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when "Avatar: The Last Airbender" premiered in 2005. Since then, animation hasn't been the same. The Nickelodeon cartoon, as created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Asian culture and mythology. At the center of its story is Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), the latest incarnation of the Avatar and, as such, the only living being capable of wielding all four elements and stopping the evil Fire Lord Ozai before he can conquer the world.

It didn't take long for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" to set itself apart from other action-heavy animated shows in its day on its way to becoming one of the best and most unique American cartoons of all time. Alongside "Teen Titans," "Avatar" helped popularize anime-inspired cartoons in the West and started discussions among...

In a cast blessed with talent, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra were headed by a strong voice cast. Dante Basco as Prince Zuko and Makoto Iwamatsu as General Iroh are some of the more memorable ones, but every actor breathed life into their characters.

In more subtle but impactful roles were surprising and prominent celebrities, some of who aren’t known for the voice acting industry at all. The diverse personalities and roles allowed for many more opportunities for these cameos to arise from different careers and unite fanbases together.
