Uta Briesewitz’s American Sweatshop Extends Festival Run After SXSW
Uta Briesewitz
Uta Briesewitz, the German cinematographer who landed her first U.S. break shooting the pilot of HBO’s The Wire, has stepped into feature directing with American Sweatshop. Before turning to long-form drama she directed episodes of Severance, Westworld and Stranger Things, experience that shapes her new film’s boxed-in visual language. The thriller premiered in March in SXSW’s Narrative Spotlight strand and, on 8 June, closed the Lighthouse International Film Festival on New Jersey’s Long Beach Island.

Filmed at Mmc Studios in Cologne and on Bonn streets during the 2024 summer break, the production received €400,000 from the Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw. Producers Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana partnered with Elsani Film and Baltimore Pictures, while Plaion Pictures will oversee German theatrical release. Matthew Nemeth’s script follows Daisy, a low-paid content moderator driven to hunt for the source of a violent online video that she cannot erase from her mind.

Uta Briesewitz Talks ‘American Sweatshop’, Early Days On ‘The Wire’ & The Hollywood Agent Who Told Her: “No-One Wants To Work With A Female Dp”
Image
Uta Briesewitz delivered a Munich International Film Festival Masterclass on her new movie American Sweatshop and also shared tales of her time on The Wire and the resistance she met as a woman coming up in Hollywood.

Briesewitz was joined by Anita Elsani, who produced American Sweatshop, and she brought the film’s Dop Jörg Widmer onto the stage during the session, which was organized by the Kirch Foundation and hosted by Deadline.

American Sweatshop stars Lili Reinhart as Daisy, a young woman whose job is to evaluate harmful and offensive content on social media. She is desensitized, but one violent video shakes up her world. The movie bowed at SXSW and had its European premiere at Munich.

“It’s a film that has a very clear attitude and it is just take it or leave it,” Elsani said. “All of us can surf on the internet because there are...

Best Drama Directing Emmy predictions: Triple submissions and big names flood this category
Image
When the dust settled, there were 177 submissions in the Best Drama Directing category for the 2025 Emmys. Based on the TV Academy's calculus, there will be seven finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.

The vast uptick in submissions, when compared to the writing category, is due to the number of directors put up for each show. Front-runners like Severance, The Pitt, The Last of Us, and Paradise each went for for triple entries. Meanwhile, Andor, The Diplomat, and The Handmaid’s Tale each opted for a double-play. And because some shows had only one director behind the camera throughout the duration, such as The White Lotus and Squid Game, they were only allowed one episode for the category.

While a higher number of submissions per series may result in potential vote-splitting, we have seen time and time again that passionate voters will mark down a show on the ballot multiple times,...

American Sweatshop Review: Lili Reinhart’s Captivating Turn
Lili Reinhart in American Sweatshop (2025)
From the first frame, American Sweatshop positions itself as a tightly wound psychological thriller centered on the unseen mechanics of online content moderation. Uta Briesewitz makes a confident leap from television—where she honed her eye on shows like Stranger Things—into her feature debut, guiding each scene with the precision of a TV director accustomed to rhythm and restraint. Lili Reinhart anchors the film as Daisy, a newly minted moderator at Paladin Control whose daily task is heartbreakingly simple: watch flagged clips, then click “accept” or “reject.”

The story takes its cues from real-world moderation hubs, marrying newsroom efficiency with horror‑film unease. Rows of workstations stretch into shadowy corners, where fluorescent lights hum and keyboard clicks fall like a metronome marking sanity’s decline. Reinhart’s Daisy emerges as a vessel for our own digital anxiety—she scans titles like “Woman Jumps Off Building” or “Nail in Her,...

All 34 ‘Black Mirror’ episodes ranked, including ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ and ‘Eulogy’
Image
Every new season of Black Mirror launches a feverish debate over which episode was the best. Emmy voters gave three consecutive Best TV Movie awards to "San Junipero" (2017), "USS Callister" (2018), and "Bandersnatch" (2019), but how does the entire fandom rate the best and worst installments? We've consulted the cumulative IMDb scores for all seasons and have come up with the definitive ranking of Black Mirror episodes. Can you guess the No. 1 choice?

Season 7 was released in April 2025 and brought the total number of episodes and specials to 34. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi anthology series began on the U.K.'s Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix (and becoming a worldwide phenomenon) in 2016. The show took a four-year break after Season 5, thanks in part to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, but that just gave people even more time to relive their favorite episodes from the beginning.

“They’ve Chosen to Fight”: ‘Severance’ Creator Reveals Where We’ll Find the Innies in Season 3
Image
Severance creator Dan Erickson has addressed where the audience will find the innies at Lumon when we pick up in Season 3. The Severance Season 2 finale ends with Mark (Adam Scott) ultimately choosing to stay on the severed floor with Helly (Britt Lower) instead of leaving with Gemma (Dichen Lachman). Mark believed Gemma was dead until he learned that she was alive and being tested on at Lumon, and while it was not revealed how she survived the supposedly fatal car crash, we know she's been nothing more than Lumon’s lab rat this whole time. During a recent interview with Dazed, Severance creator Dan Erickson spoke about what will happen to the innies at the start of Season 3 after choosing to stay and fight for their lives instead of letting their outies decide their fate:

"I think that we leave our innies in a very interesting and precarious place. They...

Severance renewed for season 3 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

Apple TV+ is rewarding Severance fans with another season of the critically acclaimed sci-fi workplace drama. The streamer renewed the award-winning series for a third season, and Severance creator Dan Erickson claims it won’t take another three years to arrive.

“We’re hoping that there are no massive strikes or pandemics or fissures opening up in the crest of the Earth that end up delaying us. Barring that, I’d certainly hope that we’d get this one out a bit sooner,” said Erickson in an interview with Variety. “But, Severance has always been a show that takes a long time to make, and we’re proud of what we came up with, even though it took quite a long time.”

The series premiered on February 18, 2022, with season two debuting on January 17, 2025. The game-changing season two finale aired on March 20, 2025.

Sometimes, you gotta hit rock bottom to realize just how deep the pit is. Will you agree? Well, there’s a reason the internet’s dark side is often referred to as a ‘black hole’—you can’t unsee the abyss, no matter how hard you try. Uta Briesewitz’s American Sweatshop thrusts me headfirst into that very void, where content moderators are the unsung workers trapped in the most soul-sucking job imaginable.

‘I Grew Up on That Set’: Finn Wolfhard Reveals How Stranger Things Inspired His New Slasher Film
Image
Finn Wolfhard might be growing beyond Stranger Things stardom, but he still credits the show as a rite of passage. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on how his time on the Netflix hit prepared him for Hell of a Summer, his directorial debut.

"I grew up on that set and was really interested in filmmaking and would stay every day after I would be done," Wolfhard said.

Known for his breakout role in Stranger Things, the actor-turned-director recalled sticking around post-curfew "just to watch the filmmakers make the show." The Netflix set became a classroom, an informal crash course ahead of Wolfhard pursuing a career in directing.

"There's a lot of stuff that I definitely learned from that and the way you communicate to crew and actors."

Stranger Things boasts no shortage of filmmaking superstars. Wolfhard's on-set educators include the likes of Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), Pixar legend Andrew Stanton,...

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 9.Jen Tullock addresses why her character, Devon, calls Harmony Cobel for help in Severance season 2, episode 9. The sophomore season of Apple TV+’s hit psychological thriller continues to explore the ramifications behind Lumon's controversial medical procedure which "severs" an employee's work and personal memory. After Mark experiences a sudden blackout due to the reintegration procedure, Devon takes the drastic step of reaching out to Cobel. The former manager of the severed floor secretly infiltrated Mark’s personal life in season 1 by masquerading as the overly friendly neighbor “Mrs. Selvig.”

In an interview with Variety, Tullock explained why she thinks Devon is able to put aside her animosity toward Cobel after being staunchly against her. As Mrs. Selvig in Severance season 1, Cobel offered to assist Devon with nursing her newborn in order to monitor Mark's every move. While this was a significant breach of trust,...

'American Sweatshop' Review: Lili Reinhart Is a "First Responder of the Internet" In Tense Cyber Thriller
Image
In the constantly evolving world of the internet, you’ve probably crossed paths with a video that you likely didn’t want to see. Be it because it was something too graphic or because it was something so disturbing, no human being should ever have to see it. American Sweatshop, which is the directorial debut of veteran television director Uta Briesewitz, takes us head first into the worst job in the world: internet censors. When you first see the title American Sweatshop, it sounds like a documentary, and in some respects, it does feel like one, especially at the beginning. But at its core, Breisewitz's first feature is a tense and unpredictable character study set in a world that you didn't know existed.

‘Severance’: Jen Tullock Breaks Down Devon’s ‘F— It’ Plan With Cobel, Android Phone Theories and Why the Character Has ‘Always’ Been Queer
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 9 of “Severance,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

It all started off with an urgent phone call to Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette), who had been noticeably absent throughout most of “Severance” Season 2.

In a season that has focused extensively on the dynamics between the innies and the outies and questions about ownership over one’s body, it’s Devon (Jen Tullock) who understands that Harmony is the key to outie Mark (Adam Scott) getting his wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman) back.

Devon’s plan is for Harmony and her to take Mark back to the severed birthing cabin, which was referenced back in Season 1, so that Mark can talk to his innie and devise a plan before the Cold Harbor file is complete.

In the penultimate episode of Season 2, titled “The After Hours,” Devon drives a reluctant, conflicted Mark — who is expected to...

‘American Sweatshop’ Review: A Thoughtful but Artless Descent Into Online Hell
Image
Even in the relatively regulated world of the contemporary internet, you never know what the person next to you is looking at on their phone: Fascist propaganda? Hardcore pornography? Photos from a church picnic? So it goes that the gray, featureless office building that gives “American Sweatshop” its title looks like it could be anything. The only sign that something is off here is the on-site counselor — and the employees vomiting and crying and having rage-filled tantrums at their desks.

Content moderation is a well-documented phenomenon, first brought to widespread public attention by Adrian Chen’s 2014 “Wired” article “The Laborers Who Keep Dick Pics and Beheadings Out of Your Facebook Feed.” The headline there says it all: Around the world, a silent army of low-wage workers manually review flagged content on social-media sites to determine whether or not it violates the site’s terms of service. In practice, this means...

SXSW Preview + Hot List: Blake Lively, Jenna Ortega, Michelle Obama, Matthew McConaughey & More Coming To Austin
Image
Usually, it’s the films that are loud at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin. This year, however, the parade of personalities in the City of the Violet Crown will be creating plenty of thunder including Blake Lively, Jenna Ortega, Michelle Obama, Disney co-chairman Alan Bergman, Amazon and MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Conan O’Brien fresh off the Oscar Dolby Theatre stage.

There are an intriguing amount of sit-downs here at SXSW this year after the fest kicks off Friday, rivaling the number of sidebar chats at a San Diego Comic-Con and certainly towering over the few at this past year’s Sundance, where the best chats were off-menu and not contained in any program: Elvis Mitchell’s conversations with Bill Murray and Quentin Tarantino.

In a déjà vu to Comic-Con, O’Brien will be on stage twice: once in a Sunday comedy event with...

Severance Stars Address What's Different About Mark S. Love Scenes With Helly and Helena
Image
Severance has made it its prerogative to have its audiences really root for its characters - specifically the characters' work selves (innies) - none more so than Helly and Mark S. The couple had a "will they or won’t they" romance through most of Season 1, and by the time of Season 2, it seemed they were set more for "when they."

In Episode 4, fans got a firm answer, only for the tender moment to be spoiled by a horrible truth - Helly wasn’t Helly, but Helena pretending to be her innie. Well, in episode 6, the couple finally got to have their intimate moment - and the actors make it clear that there is a clear difference between what happened with Mark S. and Helena and Mark S. and Helly. Their actors, Adam Scott and Britt Lower, addressed the situation to Entertainment Weekly.

‘Severance’ Star Britt Lower on Helly’s ‘Reclamation’ of Her Body: ‘Her Heart Opening to Connection Is the Scariest Thing’

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 6 of “Severance,” streaming now on Apple TV+.

Britt Lower’s Helly R. has been through the ringer in the second season of “Severance.”

After having her body hijacked by outie Helena, she finally returns to the severed floor as herself – only to be met with an icy reception from her fellow macrodata refiners.

In Season 2, Episode 6, titled “Attila,” Helly finally gets some answers: Mark confesses that he was intimate with Helena (who he believed to be Helly) during the Ortbo in Episode 4.

Helly is, naturally, distraught when she learns the truth — but she doesn’t let it keep her down for long. “What sucks is that she got to have that and I didn’t. That she used me to trick my friends,” she tells Mark.

He meekly offers to describe their relations, but Helly’s got a better idea: “I don’t want her memory.

Severance Season 2 Episode 6 Finally Addressed A Burning Question About Innies & Outies
Image
Warning: This article contains major spoilers. Don't be a shambolic rube by reading this without watching the latest episode of "Severance" first.

After arguably hitting its peak with the Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence, season 2 of "Severance" has settled back into a more familiar rhythm in the weeks since ... though that's not to say that the series hasn't continued moving the story in fascinating directions. Episode 5 shifted gears considerably and opted for a much more low-key hour, but what about the sixth? This latest episode, titled "Attila," just introduced some of our biggest wrinkles yet. Dylan G. (Zach Cherry) finally discerns the meaning of his bestie Irving B.'s (John Turturro) final words, "Hang in there," and discovers his instructions leading to the creepy-looking hallway from his outie's paintings. Mark S. (Adam Scott) and Helly R. (Brit Lower) consummate their romance -- for real, this time. And, over in the...

Amid Episode 6’s revealing, awkward, and intimate dinner party, Fields (John Noble) presents a seemingly innocuous opinion. “I believe Innies deserve to experience love,” he says. In the moment, it’s a supportive, friendly gesture. Fields, after all, is sharing his table with a man, Irving (John Turturro), who had an “erotic entanglement” with his husband, Burt (Christopher Walken). That their romantic relationship was restricted to the office, where the couple worked as severed employees, is a significant distinction — if Innies and Outies are independent individuals, with no real knowledge of what the other is doing, thinking, or feeling, then it would be hard for Fields to argue his husband betrayed him.

But that’s a big “if.” In the world of “Severance,” people have been arguing over whether Innies and Outies are separate people since the...

Image
Warning: Spoilers for Severance through Season 2, Episode 2.

As Severance’s second season finally returns to Apple TV+ after a massive three-year hiatus, viewers are anxious for their various questions to finally receive some answers. However, while the show’s Season 2 premiere provided some resolutions, it also garnered a whole new set of inquiries that likely won’t be fully addressed for some time. With many fans speculating Helena might actually be posing as Helly (Britt Lower), a number of viewers are also questioning Ms. Huang’s (Sarah Bock) purpose at Lumon, given her young age, and are curious about what Irving’s (John Turturro) outie is up to. However, those are merely a few queries in a sea of others.

Quick Links The Outside World in 'Severance' Feels Off Is the Outside World in 'Severance' Another Prison? 'Severance' Season 2 Promises to Peel Back the Curtain

After a three-year period that felt twice that length, Severance has finally returned. Last Friday saw the season premiere arrive, and it proved an appropriately trippy and darkly funny return (on top of featuring a welcome uncredited cameo from Keanu Reeves). While it mostly functioned as an extended reintroduction after years away, it also promised a number of tantalizing mysteries that we’re eagerly awaiting to see where they lead.

If the buzz from critics is any indication, we’re in for an exciting ride this year. The cast and crew are promising to shed more light on the series’ biggest mysteries and thus reveal more of their larger vision for the story. Whether that involves explaining Dr. Casey...

‘Severance’ Season 2 trailer: Adam Scott makes a run for it through Lumon
Image
It’s been a minute, but “Severance” is almost back.

On Wednesday, Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for Season 2 of the Emmy-winning drama, which returns on Friday, Jan. 17, nearly three years after it premiered in February 2022. The trailer sees Mark (Adam Scott) frantically running through Lumon’s pristine white hallways intercut with quick snippets of Season 2 scenes. He eventually arrives at his old workspace, where a new group of people, including one played by Alia Shawkat, have replaced Helly (Britt Lower), Irving (John Turturro), and Dylan (Zach Cherry).

““Welcome back, Marcus,” Seth (Tramell Tillman) says, walking in with a handful of blue balloons with Mark’s face on them. “Been a minute.”

Apple TV+’s sci-fi drama follows Mark Stout, a worker who agrees to sever his life so that his “innie” (the version who works at Lumon Industries in the Macrodata Refinement division) and his “outie” (his home persona...

The Old Man Season 2 TV Review
Image
Plot: Former CIA agent Dan Chase and former FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper set off on their most important mission to date — to recover Emily Chase after she is kidnapped by Faraz Hamzad, a powerful Afghan tribal leader. With all three men claiming her as their daughter, Emily finds herself in an identity crisis that has dire implications.

Review: The first season of The Old Man was a unique take on the espionage drama, pitting the great Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow opposite one another despite not sharing the screen until the final episode. Truncated by Bridges’ cancer diagnosis and recovery along with a bout of Covid, the first season of The Old Man concluded with three episodes less than originally intended. Still, the series presented two of our best acting talents, complemented by solid performances from Alia Shawkat and Amy Brenneman, as the series set up an even more exciting sophomore run.

Ranking Every Black Mirror Season 6 Episode
Image
Black Mirrors sixth season has been available to stream on Netflix since summer 2023, along with the rest of the series. The latest installment brought fans more shocking content with five new episodes (two more than Season 5 offered), but how do they stack up. Each episode also has a varying length, with some stretching for close to an hour and others stopping short of the 40-minute mark.

Except for a few Easter eggs that suggest the events are interlinked, each episode has an independent story; viewers will have an easier time picking a favorite or simply selecting those theyd prefer to watch. While more Black Mirror is always a good thing for fans of the series, some episodes fall into old habits, while others push the series further into uncharted territory. With six seasons and a film to draw reference from, fans have come to expect a certain element from Black Mirror.

Stranger Things Director Reveal Hints Season 5 Will Continue An Awesome S4 Trend
Image
Stranger Things season 4 fully embraced horror, and season 5 is expected to continue this trend with a sci-fi twist. Dan Trachtenberg, known for his work in sci-fi and horror films, will direct an episode of Stranger Things season 5. Trachtenberg's previous works, such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, have been critically acclaimed, making him a promising choice for the series' horror theme.

Stranger Things is preparing for its fifth and final season, and it seems to be continuing the best trend of season 4. Stranger Things has stood out for its mix of fantasy and horror, as well as its many references and tributes to 1980s pop culture, but each season has brought a couple of changes to the series’ tone. Stranger Things seasons 1 and 2 were more about suspense, as they were introducing the audience to the Upside Down and its many mysteries, with season 3 adding more action and drama to the mix with the...
