Outer Banks season 4 concluded with the devastating death of JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow), and it means season 5 will see everything changed for one character. JJ's tragic death sets up Outer Banks season 5's most personal quest yet for Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey), who has now lost her boyfriend, and, for the first time, has a direct stake in the game. Previously, Kiara had tagged along with the Pogues on their treasure hunts for moral support, but has had little personal involvement until now.
Outer Banks season 4's treasure hunt for Blackbeard's shipwreck and fabled Blue Crown had personal stakes for JJ after he learns that his real biological parents are Larissa Genrette (Tommi Rose) and Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane). Larissa's father, Wes Genrette (David Jensen), believed his family was cursed with untimely deaths because an ancestor killed the notorious pirate Blackbeard and his wife, then buried her without her precious amulet.

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Outer Banks season 4, part 2.
It wouldn't be a season of Outer Banks without a memorable and diabolical villain, and Chandler Groff might be the show's worst antagonist yet. Netflix's action-adventure mystery teen drama revolves around the Pogues John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo who often (aka all the time) find themselves in trouble as they have become expert treasure hunters over the years. As a result, the Outer Banks characters have encountered many villains, and a decent number of them happen to be their parents.
Netflix renewed Outer Banks for a fifth and final season just ahead of the season 4, part 2 premiere in November 2024. J. Anthony Crane is expected to reprise his role as Chandler Groff in the show's last episodes.
During Outer Banks season 4, part 1's ending, JJ learned that Luke Maybank wasn't his biological father. Groff and...

The full season of Outer Banks season 4 is now streaming on Netflix following the release of the final five episodes of the season on Nov. 7. Season 4 brought about a lot of change for the Pogues but as the adage goes, the more things change the more they stay the same.
While the Pogues start the season out riding high off their victory at the end of season 3 which saw them discover the lost city of El Dorado and escape with over $1 million in gold nuggets, they quickly came crashing back down to reality. With their earnings going down the drain in the blink of an eye, the Pogues once again found themselves pulled into a treasure hunt which brought about a new wave of obstacles to overcome and brought about new threats lurking around every corner.

After three seasons of high-stakes treasure hunts — in search of $400 million, the Cross of Santo Domingo and, most recently, El Dorado — the Pogues finally strike gold at the end of Outer Banks Season 3. Once deemed troublemakers on Kildare Island, the friend group are now celebrated as hometown heroes for putting an end to a 500-year-old mystery and finding El Dorado, the lost city of gold.
But that doesn’t mean their treasure-hunting days are over. In the season finale, 18 months after completing the biggest quest of their lives, the Pogues are approached by an elderly man Wes Genrette (David Jensen) at the commemorative ceremony. The gentleman pulls out a manuscript belonging to the infamous pirate, Blackbeard. It’s a captain’s log with records of the exact locations Blackbeard’s ship sailed to up until 1718, when it was shipwrecked. It’s thought that all of Blackbeard’s precious gold is...

Outer Banks revolves around a group of Pogues living in the Outer Banks, led by John B, and although they're young in the show, all the actors who play the main characters are older than their fictional counterparts in season 4. Some stars were around the same age as their characters when Outer Banks first premiered in April 2020. However, the timeline in the Netflix action-adventure mystery teen drama doesn't adhere to the one in real life. For example, even though season 2 dropped one year after season 1, only days passed by in the world of Outer Banks.
Production on Outer Banks season 4 started in June 2023 and didn't wrap until June 2024 due to work stoppages related to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
As a result, most of the Outer Banks cast are several years older than their characters. The 18-month time jump at the end of the season 3 finale certainly helped some stars get...

Outer Banks season 4, part 1 saw the death of a man on the beach, who bore a unique trident tattoo. As JJ Maybank, Kiara Carrera, John B. Routledge, Sarah Cameron, Pope Heyward, and Cleo Anderson of the Pogues find themselves caught in the crossfire of yet another mystery, they are met with dangerous opposition. This season of Outer Banks sees the group's main enemy as Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) and a group of mercenaries also after Blackbeard's Blue Crown and the amulet, but their backstory remains unclear ahead of the second half of the season.

Outer Banks season 4, part 1 introduces many new characters, like Larissa Genrette, who is never physically seen (outside of her portrait) but still significantly impacts the story. Season 4 jumps ahead 18 months after the events of the Outer Banks season 3 finale, aka when the Pogues found El Dorado. The six teens John B, Sarah, Pope, Kiara, JJ, and Cleo use their newfound fortune to build a business and a home for themselves. However, in the midst of their dangerous adventures, Hollis is securing a deal with Rafe Cameron regarding the ownership of the allegedly haunted Goat Island. The first half of Outer Banks season four ended with several cliffhangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season.
Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke (Gary Weeks). His birth parents are actually the late Larissa Genrette and Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) — making him the kind of person he hates, a Kook, and the grandson of Wes Genrette (David Jansen).

It all comes down to this! Only one episode of Outer Banks season 4 part 1 left, and it’s a good one.

In Outer Banks season 4 episode 5, “Albatross,” Shoupe questions JJ about the situation at the Break when JJ threatened the Kooks after Ruthie tried to run them over. Then, Shoupe asks JJ about what happened at the hyperbaric chamber.
Shoupe shows JJ some photos of the dead guy that turned up on the beach. JJ denies knowing the dead guy, which is true. Then, Shoupe asks JJ where they were on Saturday night, the night Wes Genrette (David Jensen) died.

It’s the Pogues vs. Sheriff Shoupe (Cullen Moss) in the first scene of Outer Banks season 4 episode 3, “The Lupine Corsairs.”
At the end of the second episode, the Pogues minus JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Kie (Madison Bailey) stumbled upon an active crime scene. Then, Shoupe starts interviewing John B (Chase Stokes), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant). They actually tell the truth, mostly. Of course, they left out the important part that they actually found Elizabeth’s amulet.
Then, the Pogues bump into the last person to see Wes (David Jensen) alive, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), his own son-in-law. And, let’s be real. He’s shady for real for real. He tells Pope and the gang that he intends to honor the deal that Wes made with the Pogues.
At this point in the series, the Pogues are getting pretty good at picking up vibes.

We saw that again in the season 4 premiere. For a time, it looked like they were just going to dive right in, but there’s a lot more to Wes’s interest in Blackbeard’s treasure.
The Pogues agree to find an amulet that belonged to Blackbeard’s wife, Elizabeth Outer Banks. (L to R) Anthony Crane as Groff, David Jensen as Genrette in episode 402 of Outer Banks. Cr. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix © 2024
Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), Wes’s son-in-law, takes them to Wes’s old estate on Goat Island. Immediately, Wes shares why he needs the Pogues.

The Outer Banks season 4 part 1 ending is definitely a big cliffhanger! Well, there are a few big cliffhangers actually in Outer Banks season 4 episode 5, "Albatross."
For most of the season, the Pogues were just interested in paying off their property taxes. After JJ gambled away the last of the money from the El Dorado gold, the Pogues were in a rough spot, and Wes Genrette (David Jensen), who we met at the end of Outer Banks season 3, threw the Pogues a lifeline.
In exchange for finding the amulet that belonged to Elizabeth Teach, the wife of Blackbeard, in Blackbeard's wrecked ship, Wes would give the Pogues $50K, more than enough to cover the cost of the taxes and get the business back up and running.
The plan was going so well until it hit a snag! Another group, a violent one, was also looking for the amulet, which holds clues...

I’ve always been interested and super curious about the whole Mk Ultra CIA Human Experiment story and have often found myself reading articles, listening to podcasts or watching the odd rare documentary diving into what is and is not known about the highly illegal but absolutely fascinating events. So a dramatisation of one man’s involvement was sure to get my juices flowing.
There was also an added interesting factor to Mk Ultra with the director being from an intelligence background. This may not make much difference in terms of a factual nature (although it couldn’t hurt) but you have to imagine it would make a difference in terms of aesthetic and the procedural nature of the story as we take an all too real,...

Bingo Hell is a movie directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero starring young upstarts called Adriana Barraza, Richard Brake, L. Scott Caldwell and Bertila Damas among other promising cast members.
The screenplay was written together by Shane McKenzie, Gigi Saul Guerrero and Perry Blackshear. And, apparently, they had a blast writing this.
Plot
Some seniors live a peaceful life caring for their community and spending hours playing bingo until things change: a new owner, with greater and more infernal prizes has arrived at the district to change the way this entertainment is experienced from now on.
About the Movie Bingo Hell (2021)
I was recommended this film as one of the worst films to write about and I will disagree: Bingo Hell is infernal entertainment, and very well made visually (at least the choices they have made). It is tacky, kitsch or whatever you want to call it, it has a neon...

"Are you ready to begin?" Cinedigm has revealed an official trailer for an intriguing psychological thriller titled Mk Ultra, from filmmaker Joseph Sorrentino. This is a superbly on-the-nose title for a film that is based around and set in the time of the Mk Ultra experiments in the 60s, but that's how they have to sell films these days. Based on the infamous CIA drug experiments, this psychological thriller follows a brilliant psychiatrist, played by Anson Mount, who unknowingly becomes entangled with a dangerous government entity fixated on mind control using psychedelic substances. This thriller exposes the experiments the US conducted on its own citizens. Mk Ultra also stars Jaime Ray Newman, Alon Aboutboul, and David Jensen. It's amusing that they turned the Mk Ultra tests into fodder for an intense thriller, I don't think it ever got this crazy. Or… did it? "Politics and science make the worst of friends,...

One of the lesser-sung items among umpteen offbeat little ’70s movies was Larry Yust’s “Homebodies.” That 1974 black comedy on the cusp of horror was about a community of frail old retirees who turn out to be surprisingly vigorous — even homicidal — in defending their homes from the callous forces of market-driven “progress.” A similar premise is the starting point for “Bingo Hell,” which alongside “Black as Night” kicks off the second quartet of genre features premiering under the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” umbrella on Amazon Prime. This first full-length solo directorial project for Gigi Saul Guerrero exchanges the Cincinnati grit of “Homebodies” for the hotter palette of a Southern California desert town.
The comedy and horror elements get amped up as well — maybe too much so. In any case, what starts out looking like another caustic commentary on gentrification at the expense of the elderly soon takes a turn into half-baked Stephen King territory,...

L. Scott Caldwell will star in Blumhouse and Amazon’s “Bingo,” the latest thriller on the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” slate.
The Tony Award-winning actor, known for her roles as Rose in “Lost” and in “The Fugitive” will star as Delores, the “witty, loyal and tough grandmother” at the center of “Bingo’s” story.
Caldwell joins previously announced stars Adriana Barraza (Oscar nominee for “Babel”), who plays Delores’ best friend Lupita, and “The Good Lord Bird” breakout Joshua Caleb Johnson, as her grandson Caleb.
Set in the barrio of Oak Springs, the film follows a strong and stubborn group of elderly friends who refuse to be gentrified. Lupita is the leader of the group, keeping them together as a community, a family, but little do they know, their beloved Bingo hall is about to be sold to a much more powerful force than money itself.

"You know, Joe, there ain't no roadmap to being a daddy. We're just doing the best we can..." Quiver Distr. has debuted an official trailer for a southern drama titled Walkaway Joe, marking the feature directorial debut of actor Tom Wright. The trailer makes it seem like a billiards hustling film similar to Rounders, with some interesting characters dealing with their own demons in this. Walkaway Joe is the story of an unlikely friendship between a young boy searching for his father in pool halls across the country, and a wandering loner hiding from his past. In their encounter with each other they experience the power of a second chance, and a shot at redemption. Starring David Strathairn, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Julian Feder, with Julie Ann Emery, David Jensen, and Susan Gallagher. Looks a bit cliche, but still maybe worthwhile. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Tom Wright's Walkaway Joe,...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details about tonight Queen Sugar Season 4 finale
“As we’ve gone through the four seasons it’s been a juggling act to make sure that this feels relevant, but also has the intimacy of the black family dynamic that so many of us who work on it know to be true and want the show to be even more representative of,” Queen Sugar creator Ava DuVernay says of tonight’ Season 4 finale and the heart of the NAACP Image Awards winning Own series.
Certainly the “I Am” episode penned by showrunner Anthony Sparks was dynamic, to put it mildly. Coming off a season that packed more into 13 episodes than most series do into their entire run, there was an election, a diary, a corrupt revelation, reconciliation and forgiveness between Rutina Wesley’s Nova Bordelon and Kofi Siriboe portrayed brother Ralph Angel. Amidst a politically inspired arrest,...

The story of Mildred and Richard Loving could easily have become a sledgehammer epic about social injustice. Writer-director Jeff Nichols instead sticks to the facts and recounts their ordeal with a quiet subjectivity that neither exaggerates nor sanctifies. The result is a marvelously affecting demonstration of how a civilized, progressive America rights a wrong. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton are terrific as just plain folks oppressed by an obsolete law.

Loving is wonderful, warmly romantic drama about the couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, whose Supreme Court case struck down laws that prevented interracial couples from marrying. Although the court case is part of the story, the film is really about the couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, childhood sweethearts whose deeply romantic love story is the heart of this excellent, touching film.
Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special) directs this fine, realistic, gentle romance story, with fine performances by Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton as the couple. The couple’s beautiful love story is the heart of this film.
Audiences expecting a courtroom drama and in-depth legal discussions about the pivotal Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court case may be surprised by Loving.

Director Jeff Nichols talks to us about the making of his sci-fi gem Midnight Special and moving onto making a big-budget movie...
A boy with extraordinary powers. Government agents and other sinister forces pursuing the boy and his family across America. Such a story might imply a noisy, aggressive chase thriller, but director Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special offers up something far more thoughtful and intelligent. Sure, there are guns, stunts and some quite breathtaking images courtesy of those otherworldly powers possessed by the young Alton (Jaeden Liberher), but Midnight Special is also as dramatically involved and delicately crafted as Nichols’ earlier movies, which include the superb Take Shelter and Mud.
Midnight Special’s subtlety might explain why, despite its almost universal appreciation from critics, didn’t quite enjoy the box office success it deserved. In a multiplex landscape increasingly dominated by grand spectacle, Nichols’ sci-fi seemed almost...

Family and encroaching doom seem to be staple themes in Jeff Nichols’ filmography thus far with Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter and Mud all dealing with ideas of how the familial unit can be disturbed or destroyed but each of his films have had a different feel and approach to them which has made them feel legitimately different. With Midnight Special he does this again, with sci-fi of the 1980’s having a direct sway over its thriller narrative throughline but also in its attention to character amid the wonder.
Starting with a disconcerting in media res jolt, Midnight Special intrigues from the beginning with Nichols cleverly introducing two men, a father and his friend, already having supposedly kidnapped a child and on their way...

Slowly but surely, filmmaker Jeff Nichols is becoming one of the more popular names in independent cinema. In fact, some pundits already claim that he’s one of the new masters of the medium. This week, he takes his first step towards the mainstream with the science fiction film Midnight Special, a unique movie that could introduce him to a wider audience. Nichols makes hard to define cinema, and this is certainly the case as well. There are genre trappings, but this is as much about the nature of faith and fatherhood as it is a sci-fi tale. It’s not perfect, but Midnight Special is one of the more interesting releases of 2016 so far. The film is a strange animal, but certainly doesn’t lack for ambition. As it begins, we’re introduced to Roy (Michael Shannon), who is in a hotel room with Lucas (Joel Edgerton) and young...

Much larger in sponsorships, this year's Napa Valley Film Festival (November 11-15) has become so popular that the main road between Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga is jammed and the smaller theaters are playing to Sro crowds. The St.Helena Cameo Cinema is the longest running single screen theater in the United States, going back to 1913 and “featuring 400 seats, 150 opera chairs, a modern stage and two standing sets".
Culinary, wine and film mix well here. This year we were invited to dine with second-generation vintner Ron Nicholsen, at his estate, Kelham Vineyards, where chief Tyler Rodde from Oenotri, the southern Italian restauranteur from the town of Napa served us his finest food. And at every screening, the best of wines are tasted, In the morning we could (and I did once) practice yoga on the vineyard banks of the river running through the valley. Afternoon and evenings wine pours freely and people mix as they go to movies or to the parties and receptions. My big discovery was White Stone Wine grown on the shores of the mighty Lake Roosevelt in the shadows of Whitestone Rock. I award it for its white chalky stone accent on its bold red wines.
Jury and audience awards were given to the winners at the Uptown Theatre on Sunday, November 15, 2015. The Festival had screened 120 new independent films in 12 unique screening venues in the four postcard-perfect towns of Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga.
David Glasser, COO and President of The Weinstein Company presented awards on behalf of the third annual Lexus Short Film Series. Lexus’ Media Director Teri Hill and TWC announced the four winners, Alexis Michalik, Byoung-Gon Moon, Damian Walshe-Howling and Pippa Bianco. Look for my blog about this event.

Creature (2011)
Written by: Fred Andrews, Tracy Morse
Directed by: Fred Andrews
Cast: Dillon Casey (Oscar), Serinda Swan (Emily), Mehcad Brooks (Niles), Lauren Schneider (Karen), Aaron Hill (Randy), Amanda Fuller (Beth), Wayne Pere (Bud), David Jensen (Jimmy), Daniel Bernhardt (Grimley Boutine/Lockjaw), Sid Haig (Chopper)
The creature feature genre is often the most neglected of all the horror subgenres. It takes a back seat to more bankable premises such as slasher and paranormal horror. A new good creature feature is about as hard to find as the creature in the movie itself. Back in the day (way, way, back) in the 1950’s, the creature feature held the lion’s share of what any horror fan would want to see. In my humble opinion, it’s the biggest gamble for anybody that has plans to make a horror film now. Out of the gate, it has two strikes against it.

The Last Exorcism Part 2 is a somewhat incongruous title and the film itself bears little resemblance to the first instalment from 2010, produced like this effort by Eli Roth, a sleeper hit which made over 10 times its initial production budget in its opening weekend in the Us alone. On the back of mixed to positive reviews and name recognition that all film studios like, The Last Exorcism gets a second parts which somewhat takes away from the title of the first film, but does tries to shake things up a bit, certainly more than most horror franchises do.

Chicago – “The Last Exorcism, Part II” is just nonsense. When the title was revealed, much mockery was made of a moniker that includes the words “Last” and “Part II” but the funniest word may be “Exorcism.” Believe it or not, there isn’t even the threat of one for over an hour. It’s almost like the legendary “Troll 2” (which has no trolls). It’s just indicative of how utterly pointless this venture is, completely devoid of style, horror, character, personality, and logic. At one point, the characters watch part of Daniel Stamm’s effective original online after the found footage from that film goes viral. Just that little part of the first movie is the best part of this one.

Title: The Last Exorcism Part II Directed By: Ed Gass-Donnelly Starring: Ashley Bell, Spencer Treat Clark, Louis Herthum, Muse Watson, Julia Garner, David Jensen, Tarra Riggs, E. Roger Mitchell Dropping Nell in an entirely new environment and nixing the found footage format put “The Last Exorcism Part II” on track to becoming a fresh-feeling sequel to the original, but that’s about as far as director/co-writer Ed Gass Donnelly gets. “Part II” picks up where the first film left off. Nell (Ashley Bell) is the sole survivor of the cult massacre in the woods and is shipped off to a home for struggling girls in New Orleans. She actually manages to [ Read More ]

A few days ago we shared a new TV spot and three new images from The Last Exorcism 2, which comes from director Ed Gass-Donnelly and opens next month. As you already see – today it’s time for us to share the latest poster for the whole thing. It looks pretty creepy, and once again we have a little warning: God asks – the Devil commands. We’ll see about that!
Ed Gass-Donnelly directs the movie from a script he co-wrote with Damien Chazelle and the story picks up where the 2010 first film left off.
In other words – we have Nell Sweetzer who, unable to remember the events of the previous months, begins the process of starting a new life, but… the evil force that once possessed her has quite different plans for the poor woman!

Director Ed Gass-Donnelly co-wrote the script with Damien Chazelle, and as we said – the movie once again stars Ashley Bell as the possessed woman named Nell Sweetzer, who awakens shortly after the fiery finale in which her father failed to stop an occult ritual.
Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer is found terrified and alone in rural Louisiana. Back in the relative safety of New Orleans, Nell realizes...
