The Cinema Audio Society has its new board of directors and officers.

Peter Kurland, who quit the Movie Academy last year over its plan to cut Best Sound and seven other categories from the live Oscarcast, was elected president of Cas, replacing Karol Urban. VP Steve Venezia, Secretary Frank Morrone and Treasurer Lee Orloff were re-elected to their respective posts.

Magnolia Pictures has released the official trailer for “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” Lisa Cortés’ latest documentary, which focuses on the iconic rock n’ roll musician Richard “Little Richard” Penniman.

The film explores how Little Richard and the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll founded the whitewashed canon of American pop music. The documentary follows how Richard contributed and created a self-expressive art form for musicians that ultimately would shape the music industry throughout the following decades. “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” interview subjects include the musician’s family, Black and queer scholars and celebrity subjects including Billy Porter, Mick Jagger, Sir Lady Java, John Waters, Nile Rodgers and many more.

Founded in 1964, the Cinema Audio Society is a philanthropic, nonprofit organization for film and TV sound professionals.

Venezia, who also serves as vice-chair of the Television Academy, is an independent sound engineer who has worked with ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on the audio production of 16 Oscar broadcasts. Most recently he was senior director of worldwide production and post-production services at Dolby, where he worked for over 22 years covering sound mixing and advancements in audio technologies.

Sound Editors Planning Silent Protest at Oscars Over Live Telecast Cuts

Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.

A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.

Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”

More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.

TV Academy Elects Frank Scherma As New Chairman & CEO
The Television Academy’s board of governors has voted vice chairman Frank Scherma to become its new chairman and CEO, a post he will take over from the outgoing Hayma Washington. The election was held Thursday night at a board meeting at which the TV Academy’s annual officer elections were also held.

Scherma, the president of RadicalMedia whose producer credits include music documentaries, Errol Morris’ The Fog of War, Broadway’s Shrek the Musical and IFC TV’s Stan Against Evil, was the lone candidate to step forward by the deadline when Washington said in October he would not seek a second term. Washington was the first African-American leader in the organization’s 70-year history.

Engineering Emmy Awards: Wendy Aylsworth, Avid Among 2018 Honorees
The TV Academy today unveiled recipients of its 70th Engineering Emmy Awards, which honor an individual, company or organization for developments in broadcast technology.

Among the honorary winners is Wendy Aylsworth, the longtime Warner Bros and Disney tech exec and former chair (and current member) of the Academy’s Engineering Emmy Awards committee, who will receive the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award. Also honored is Avid, which won The Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award.

A total of five Emmys and one Emmy plaque was awarded this year. Winners will be honored October 24 at an awards gala at the Jw Marriott Hotel at L.A. Live downtown, with Criminal Minds‘ Kirsten Vangsness returning to host.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors have re-elected Bobbi Banks as president for a third term. Other officers are Frank Morrone, vp; Paul Rodriguez, treasurer; and Mark Lanza, secretary.

The board voted Glenn Morgan, sergeant at arms. Film seats on the board will be held by Mike Draghi, Scott Haller, Hal Levinsohn and Bernard Weiser; TV seats will be held by Ruth Adelman, Jason Arnold, Maciek Malish and Chris Reeves.

Banks has served on the board of directors for 16 years and is the first woman to serve as president more than two terms at the organization.

2009 Emmys Light on Horror Nominations
Despite being nominated for Best Drama and having its star Anna Paquin win Best Actress in a TV Drama at this year's Golden Globes, "True Blood" was shut out of the major categories for the 2009 Emmy Awards, which announced its nominees earlier today. Bobbi Banks has been elected for a second term as president of the Motion Picture Sound Editors.

Banks is the fourth woman to be president of the 54-year-old organization. Officers include vp Frank Morrone (also his second term); Marc Perlman, treasurer; Mark Lanza, secretary; and Solange Schwalbe, sergeant-at-arms.
