'I Don't Want to Do This': The Flash Star Reveals Which Episode Made Him Leery
Image
Grant Gustin revealed his initial reaction to The Flash's "Duet" episode. Fans consider that Supergirl crossover a highlight of the Arrowverse, especially Kara Danvers and Barry Allen's musical number.

The Flash was the best show in The CW's Arrowverse. Fans went through a rollercoaster of emotions across nine seasons of The Flash, especially its crossover episodes. Season 3's "Duet" caught audiences by surprise, however; the plot involved Kara Danvers and Barry Allen trapped in a musical dreamworld. "Duet" was surreal because it broke from the show's grounded narrative, but audiences loved the novelty. Critics praised "Duet" for its lighthearted tone and endearing ensemble, but Grant Gustin had reservations about filming that episode; he told Michael Rosenbaum that "Duet" was an odd turn for the show.

The Flash Star John Wesley Shipp Recalls 'Immediate Connection' With Grant Gustin
Image
The CW's The Flash Star John Wesley Shipp has talked about the immediate connection he had with his co-star and fellow Barry Allen actor Grant Gustin. Shipp starred as the titular DC character in 1990's The Flash CBS series before returning to play Gustin's father, Henry Allen, in the Arrowverse.

The Flash franchise veteran Shipp discussed the length of his tenure as the Scarlet Speedster and his relationship with his co-star Gustin at Megacon. In response to Cbr's question about how long he has been involved with the character, he stated, "35 years. As many years as Grant Gustin has been alive." Shipp continued, "It was an immediate connection. This is a guy who's a truthful actor. He knew I'd been the Flash, and I knew what he was taking on." In addition to playing Barry Allen in CBS' The Flash and Henry Allen in The CW's iteration, Shipp also starred as Jay Garrick,...

'The Only Reason I Did a Decent Job': Grant Gustin Explains How He Kept The Flash Fresh
Image
Having played the iconic DC character the Flash longer than anyone, Grant Gustin has now given insight into how he kept the Scarlet Speedster fresh for so long. Gustin played the Barry Allen incarnation of the character in The CW's The Flash for nine seasons and also appeared in crossovers and other shows across the Arrowverse.

Gustin told Cbr at Megacon that the show retained its freshness because he took the responsibility of playing the Flash seriously. "It was never an intentional thought about how to keep it fresh," he began. "I'm a very scene-by-scene actor. I wanted to keep it realistic. The only reason I did a decent job with the show is I took it very seriously. Try not to suck." TV Shows With The Best Pilots And The Worst Finales
Image
When a TV show has an unforgettable pilot episode, it instantly pulls viewers in for what's to come next. Whether it be the characters, the high-quality production, or the unexpected twists, people grow curious about where the story will go. However, if the series finale is disappointing and poorly conceived, the ending could leave a noticeable stain on the show's legacy and become a part of television infamy.

Shockingly, these TV shows had the best of both worlds since they started so strongly to pull viewers in, only for the final episode to cause them to question whether the investment was worth it. They became the proper definition of having a journey that is far better than the destination. While that first episode will always remain a classic, fans prefer not to think about the underwhelming finale. These criteria are applied to multiple popular shows, such as Game of Thrones,...

10 Great "What If...?" Episodes Of Famous TV Shows
Image
A recent trend that has been appearing in many popular movies and TV shows is the idea of alternate universes; that is, different realities which contrast heavily with the established world thanks to at least one key change occurring somewhere in the past. Movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have dedicated themselves to diving deep into the idea, exploring numerous alternate realities that could have existed just as easily as the ones the characters live in.

However, while many major motion pictures have been entirely focused on this idea, there are also numerous TV shows that have diverged from their main narrative in order to consider alternate realities as well. After all, it can be very enjoyable for the creators and actors of the show to consider how different the lives of their characters could have been. While they all approach the subject in different ways,...

Lori Petty in Tank Girl (1995)
Tank Girl (1995) - 37112 Blu-Ray Review by Donald Munro
Lori Petty in Tank Girl (1995)
The 2024 Blu-ray release of Tank Girl by Eureka will let you enjoy this feminist 1995 pop culture classic. The movie itself is in full HD. It looks and sounds great. The title screen looks good and is in keeping with the film. There is a single menu for the main feature, the audio and special features. It is well laid out and easily accommodates all of the elements within it. Also it integrates well with the artwork on the title screen, which was done by Greg Staples.

Beyond the movie there are the special features. The audio commentary with Lori Petty (Rebecca Buck/Tank Girl) and the director Rachel Talalay is engaging. Talalay talks a lot about the difficulties with the studio, from big things like them deleting scenes to them objecting to tracks sung by female vocalists.

There are a number of interviews and short documentary pieces. They do of course.

This Unpopular Nightmare On Elm Street Sequel Is Smarter Than You Think
Image
Over the course of seven A Nightmare On Elm Street installments in ten years, supernatural slasher Freddy Krueger became an icon, loved by adults and kids alike. Creator Wes Craven was compelled to make the final film, New Nightmare, with his original cast playing themselves in a story of how Freddy Krueger had taken over popular culture. However, the same experiment had already been done in the previous film, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, in a subtler but cleverer way.

Series producer Rachel Talalay, who also had credits in John Waters movies and the satirical Tank Girl, made her directorial debut with the sixth A Nightmare On Elm Street film. Fans didn't appreciate the film's goofiness, feeling that it took Freddy's dark humor too far. However, this comic focus facilitated a clever examination of Freddy's infiltration of everything from video games to rock 'n' roll. The least popular sequel is...

Sci-Fi Movie Flops That The Creators Still Stand By
Image
The capacity for sci-fi to pack imaginative exuberance, political richness, and sheer pulpy excitement into a dazzling cinematic adventure has been yielding masterpieces since the early days of the film medium, and it has allowed directors from Stanley Kubrick to Andrei Tarkovsky to Lizzie Borden to Denis Villeneuve to create some of their finest, most enduring work. At the same time, big-budget sci-fi can be a tough sell -- the greater the worlds and setpieces and ideas being put forth, the higher the risk of financial underperformance.

Unsurprisingly, film history is peppered with sci-fi movies that flopped upon release, only for them to be reappraised and re-emerge as cult favorites years later. That was true of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," the grandfather of all go-for-broke sci-fi monuments, and it has been true of countless ambitious and unique cinematic visions in the century since. No matter how hard the movies below may have flopped,...

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of those franchises that, despite its roller-coaster of quality across the series- is just too damn iconic to fall out of the favor of us horror fans. From 1984 and all the way up until today- audiences remain invested in the potential for such a unique and powerful monster. And we still are holding out hope for a new silver screen outing soon. So, whether you’re re-watching the original film for the millionth time- or you’re slogging your way through the 2010 remake for… some reason- the fact remains that Freddy and his status as a slasher icon will never truly die. Spider-Mans Jon Watts Wants to Direct A Nightmare on Elm Street

When Wes Craven first penned the screenplay for 1984s A Nightmare on Elm Street, he wanted to give it a happy ending. Luckily, the films producer, Bob Shaye, pushed back, and, voil, audiences were left with one of the most entertaining jump scares in cinematic history and a franchise that would span a total of eight movies and one remake (so far). Over the years, the film series has seen a rotating door of directors like Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger) and Rachel Talalay (Tank Girl) put their own spin on the character made famous by Robert Englund, with Craven even returning for 1994s Wes Cravens New Nightmare giving Freddy Krueger the meta touch that the late director was famous for.

Pour Yourself a Tall Glass of ‘Tank Girl’: Bi-Coded Sci-Fi Bubbles Over with the Lori Petty of It All

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Justice for Lori Petty!

One of cinema’s greatest action heroes is a fiercely feminist freedom fighter captured by an oppressive regime controlling the water supply of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Seeking revenge after her family was ripped from her, the heroine escapes the grasp of the army by stealing a vehicle of war, and ventures across the vast post-punk deserts of Australia with the ultimate goal of eventually slaying the white-haired tyrant who ruined her life.

One Broadway Musical Has Become The Horror Movie Gateway We Never Saw Coming

"Who is Matilda Wormwood if not Carrie White without religious trauma?" This is a joke I made when interviewing "Abigail" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for the /Film Daily podcast after complimenting them on their decision to cast Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" star Alisha Weir as their titular ballerina vampire. "Matilda" is one of author Roald Dahl's most beloved characters, offering children both the fantastical wish-fulfillment of having telekinetic superpowers, as well as the ever-important message that reading is cool. The 1988 novel has been adapted multiple times across various media, most notably the 1996 feature film directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson, the two-part BBC Radio 4 special, the stage musical featuring music by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, and the Netflix film adaptation of said musical.

"Matilda" consistently ranks as one of the most important children's novels and she was even given a Royal Mail...

90s Horror Movies With Awful Reviews That Are Actually Worth Watching
Image
Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.

However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.

While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Doctor Who's 60th Anniversary's Biggest Burning Questions

The following contains major spoilers for the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, now streaming on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer.

Doctor Who turned 60 in spectacular style, marking the occasion with three 60th Anniversary specials penned by returning showrunner Russell T Davies, featuring returning stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate. Tennant, best known and loved by Doctor Who fans for his portrayal of the Tenth Doctor, burst back onto the scene in a surprising regeneration that saw him become the Fourteenth Doctor. The Correct Order To Watch The Friday The 13th Movies
Image
The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.

In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
The 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who are coming to feature-packed DVD and Blu-ray releases in December.

At the time of writing, the first of three Doctor Who 60th anniversary special episodes has been broadcast. They’ve seen David Tennant return to the Tardis, accompanied by Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.

The three episodes – The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle – have also marked Russell T Davies’ return to the showrunner job on Doctor Who. He’s been busy scribbling the new episodes, that have been going out back in a Saturday night slot.

Furthermore, just as when Davies brought Doctor Who back in 2005, we’re getting some feature-packed discs to go with the show. The BBC will be releasing the 60th anniversary specials on DVD and Blu-ray, just in time for Christmas.

The release date, lest you think this is one of the endless modern news stories...

The Star Beast Fixes Doctor Who's Donna Noble Problem
Image
Donna Noble is back on Doctor Who — and so is David Tennant as the titular Time Lord. The past few years of the series were a narrative flatline, but in The Star Beast, the first of three 60th anniversary specials, the long-running genre show explodes with new life, as if freshly regenerated like the Doctor himself.

Russell T. Davies begins his second stint as showrunner with a familiar Doctor and companion, yet nothing about The Star Beast feels stale or safe. Together with director Rachel Talalay, he blows the doors off with a fun, thrilling cinematic adventure.

Doctor Who Fans Have Crowned the Best Episode – Do You Agree?
Image
Choosing your favourite Doctor Who episode feels a bit like choosing your favourite child, except you probably don’t have 800-plus children, so maybe it’s even worse.

But that’s exactly what Doctor Who Magazine inflicted on fans earlier this year, sugaring the pill ever so slightly by combining all the multiple-episode stories into one, which helpfully narrowed the choice from over 800 episodes to 300 “TV adventures”.

Who fans were tasked with rating all episodes out of ten – narrowing it down to 37 stories – and then asked to pick their top five from this list. After much number crunching, the top 10 TV adventures were revealed.

And there was one clear winner: “Heaven Sent”.

This 2015 Peter Capaldi-era episode was certainly powerful and memorable. The Doctor was grieving Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), after she was executed in the previous episode, “Face The Raven”. In “Heaven Sent”, The Doctor is trapped in a strange castle,...

Doctor Who Anniversary Air Dates Confirmed!
Image
Praise Russell T Davies and his list of demands – Doctor Who is coming back to Saturday nights!

There’s no more guesswork required as to when the three 60th anniversary specials will air; the BBC has confirmed that we’ll get one a week starting from Saturday November 25, two days after the show’s official birthday on Thursday 23, and continuing on Saturday December 2 and Saturday December 9.

The exact BBC One time slots have yet to be announced, but common sense says that we’re looking at the pre-Strictly Come Dancing six to seven pm hour in the UK. If Disney+ is synchronising the streaming release worldwide, that would make it somewhere around lunchtime in the US. We’ll update as soon as the time slots are confirmed.

Each new extended special was written by Russell T Davies, with music by returning composer Murray Gold, and will be an hour long.

‘Doctor Who’ Trailer: The British Series Gets 60th Anniversary Specials on Disney+ This November
Image
“Doctor Who” is looking back at its past. The long-running British sci-fi touchstone is celebrating its 60th anniversary with three new specials that bring back important figures from the show’s run, while making a big move outside the UK to Disney+. Now, the streamer has shared the full trailer for the 60th anniversary specials, ahead of their November premiere.

First premiering in 1963, BBC’s “Doctor Who” follows the titular Doctor, a mysterious adventurer from an alien Time Lord species who travels through the galaxy and time in his Police Box-disguised Tardis machine. Originally played by William Hartnell, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate into new forms upon death, and the character was portrayed by six other actors before the original run ended in 1989. After a 1996 TV film starring Paul McGann as the Doctor, the show was properly revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the lead. The series has...

‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Specials Get Disney+ Premiere Dates, New Trailer
Image
Specials marking the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who have set their premiere dates.

The three specials, which will feature the return of David Tennant as the Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Temple-Noble, are set to roll out over three weeks beginning Nov. 25 — two days after the actual 60th anniversary of Doctor Who’s first ever episode. The specials will stream on Disney+ (which grabbed streaming rights to the series in 2022) worldwide with the exception of the U.K. and Ireland, where they’ll air on the BBC.

Disney+ has also released a new trailer for the specials, following a first trailer in September that showcased the saga’s main antagonist, Neil Patrick Harris’ Toymaker — a villain first seen on Doctor Who in 1966 in a now mostly missing run of episodes.

The specials find the Fourteenth Doctor (Tennant, who also played the Tenth Doctor from 2005-10) reuniting with Donna as they battle the Toymaker.

Here's Where You Can Watch Every A Nightmare On Elm Street Movie
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. The series also attracted interesting and notable directors who went on to other projects. Chuck Russell directed part 3. Renny Harlin director part 4. Stephen Hopkins directed part 5. And Rachel Talalay directed "The Final Nightmare."

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" marathons are common around Halloween, and steamrolling through all nine extant "Nightmare" films is an experience the series' fans have likely forced themselves through at least once. Having done it,...

David Tennant's 14th Doctor Performance Teased By Legendary Doctor Who Director
Image
Rachel Talalay praises the new sonic screwdriver design and how it fits in with the aesthetic of previous eras, while also complimenting David Tennant's stylish handling of the device. Speculation arises about how Tennant will approach portraying the seemingly all-new incarnation of the Doctor, as previous returns have maintained consistency with the character and mannerisms of the Tenth Doctor. The upcoming 60th-anniversary story promises thrilling adventures with chaotic crowds, nighttime alien skirmishes, and an energetic performance from Tennant, leaving viewers excited for what's to come.

Returning celebrated Doctor Who director Rachel Talalay teases David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor performance ahead of his 60th-anniversary return to the show. Talalay directed numerous episodes throughout Peter Capaldi's tenure as the Twelfth Doctor from 2014 to 2017, including the widely-praised season 8 penultimate episode "Heaven Sent" and the first episode of the three upcoming anniversary specials, "The Star Beast." Freddy Vs Jason's Original Ending Set Up A Sequel We Never Saw
Image
Ronnie Yu's 2003 film "Freddy vs. Jason" -- simultaneously the eighth film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series and the eleventh film in the "Friday the 13th" series -- finally brought together two of the most popular characters of the 1980s slasher boom and had them wail on each other in a series of supernatural monster fights. Most slasher fans would have appreciated a "Freddy vs. Jason" film about a decade earlier, but there was still magic in the air in 2003; Yu's film made over $116 million on a $30 million budget.

It also, in a very utilitarian way, gave audiences exactly what they wanted. There was a decent-enough retinue of teenage victims to slaughter (led by actress Monica Keena). The story hung together juuuust well enough. And the final fights between Freddy (Robert Englund) and Jason (Ken Kirzinger) addressed any late-night, heavily intoxicated concerns horror fanboys might have posited.

Two Of Star Trek's Most Prolific Writers Took On A Draft Of Freddy Vs Jason
Image
In 1984, Jason Voorhees (Ted White) finally met his end in Joseph Zito's "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter." He was finally dead. In 1991, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) finally met his end in Rachel Talalay's "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare." He was finally dead. In 1993, Jason Voorhees met his end again in Adam Marcus' "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday." He was finally dead again. In 1994, Freddy Krueger finally met his end again in "Wes Craven's New Nightmare." He was finally dead again.

The two monsters were once again somehow alive to face off in Ronny Yu's excitable 2003 battle royale "Freddy vs. Jason," a film that felt like it came too late to bank on the popularity of the characters, but that was a massive hit nonetheless. Longtime fans of 1980s slasher movies were eager to see two of the most popular monsters of its heyday (played...
