Subhash K Jha revisits Shoojit Sircar’s directorial debut Yahaan, which released 20 years ago in a new installment of This Day That Year series.
Beautiful faces, smiling faces, saddened faces, perturbed faces… The Kashmir that we see in debutant director Shoojit Sircar’s Yahaan is a valley of mystery and joy. Cinematographer Jakob Ishre has used blue-tinged lenses to highlight the mood of doom and beauty.
There have been at least two other films earlier where love has unfolded in the clammy clasp of Kashmiri militancy. Neither Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir nor Ashok Pandit’s Sheen got the the sur of romance-in-the-times-of-ravages.

Director Raj Kumar Santoshi talks with Subhash K Jha on his 2002 drama The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, why he choose Ajay Devgn for the lead role and much more.
Why was the making of The Legend Of Bhagat Singh so important to you?
I’ll be very honest with you. When I was a child of 13 or 14, I remember asking my father (the late filmmaker P.L.Santoshi) about Bhagat Singh. As the evening fell in Lonavala my father told me all the details about Bhagat Singh’s life . That evening’s conversation with my father remained in my mind . While working with Govindji (Nihalani), I picked up this fine habit of reading . Any city I’d go to, I’m sure to pick up books. That’s how I familiarized myself with Bhagat Singh’s life. Then, during the time I made my early films like Andaz Apna Apna,...

Long before the fabulously fertile bucolic fable Dupahiya, Sonam Nair directed this sassy feature film, Gippi, for the visionary producer Karan Johar.
Meet Gippi then. She is free-spirited, unaffected, overweight, and under-confident, though not willing to show it(her lack of confidence, that is). Gippi’s story could well have become a trite, pedestrian exercise in clichéd sequences woven around the acne-ridden years of awkwardness and self-discovery. Instead, debutant director Sonam Nair gives us vibrant vignettes from a young, defiant teenager’s life in a posh school (beautifully shot by cinematographer Anshuman Mahaley) on the hills with her single mother and her kid brother who seems to like all the girlie things more than Gippi does.
Fearless and without inhibitions, Nair’s narration takes us through Gippi’s life of unfettered self-discovery. The film is littered with reams of well–written scenes where we see Gippi going through situations that help her grow up.

Not to be confused with the Shammi Kapoor starrer of the same name, Tumse Achcha Kaun Hai was a fairly engaging watch that never got its due. Decency and good taste dribble out of Deepak Anand’s mildly diverting romantic musical. We may not think much of another coming-of-age film about an innocent rustic’s rise and fall in the Big Bad City. But Anand’s film conveys a certain artless charm that keeps us smiling to the very end, even if we know all along how the story of the innocent abroad is going to end finally.
Right from the time when Raj Kapoor made Shree 420, the theme of a migrant’s dreams in the city of concrete nightmares has fascinated mainstream Hindi filmmakers. Like Rk’s...

I was only 24 when I met Manmohan Desai. Just eight years later, this man who was full of joie de vivre was gone.
How? The suddenness of this happy-go-lucky man’s death drove all of us movie buffs up the wall. To me Manji, still seems like the least likely candidate for self annihilation.
Though his aching back was against the wall, literally, he held forth on man movies and life with an infectious zest. His comments on offbeat films and filmmakers had me in splits. His films were kitsch art, though catch him admitting to anything arty about his works! His cinematic world encompassed a utopia where high melodrama resolved itself magically. To his abiding exasperation critics insisted on searching for logic in his films.
The maverick moviemaker said to me, “Do they realize how much brains and money are needed to make my kind of films? I really enjoy what I’m doing.

In this fascinating feature, Subhash K Jha looks back at the incredible career of writer, director and actor, the brilliant Lekh Tandon.
Recently Anil Kapoor spoke about how the 1980 film Ek Baar Kaho changed the course of his career. The long post made mention of everyone, from the film’s luminous leading lady, Shabana Azmi, to the producers, Rajshri Productions. But Anil forgot to mention Lekh Tandon, who directed Ek Baar Kaho!
This was the story of Lekh Tandon’s life: his films got recognition. He didn’t. Lekh Tandon was one of our most prolific and underrated directors. His range stretched from the playful Professor to the magical Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaye to the illogical Jahan Pyar Mile. His most celebrated film was the historical Amrapali (1966), which recreated the legendary romance between Amrapali, the courtesan, played by Vyjayanthimala, and Ajayshatru, the emperor of Magadh, played by Sunil Dutt.

It is one of Hindi films’ most cherished and eternal romantic songs, featuring the urbane Guru Dutt and the ethereal Waheeda Rehman, but the dream-like music for “Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho” was scored by its composer within 10 minutes and its opening lyrics took even lesser time. Music director Ravi, to whom we owe this melody, revealed the tune came to him as he was returning home from work and it took him “just 5 to 7 minutes” to refine it.
Stopping there, he called up lyricist Shakeel Badayuni and recited “Chaudvin ka chand ho…”. In a minute, Shakeel responded with “Ya aftaab ho…” and after another couple of minutes, added “Jo bhi ho tum khuda ki kasam, laajawab ho”.
“Chaudvin ka Chand” (1960) proved to be a pace-setter for Ravi, who was born in Delhi on this day (March 3) in 1926, for it established his reputation, and he went on to score for many...

Suniel Shetty, who is a judge on the reality show, ‘Dance Deewane’, took lessons in making reels from contestants Varsha Kawale and Srirang Sakharam. He said, “Main khud reel banaunga.” In a nostalgic nod to retro Bollywood, Varsha and Srirang hit the floor with a performance to the iconic Mohammed Rafi-Asha Bhosle track ‘O Haseena Zulfon Wali’ from the 1966 film ‘Teesri Manzil’. The song was originally picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Helen.
Dressed as the yesteryear stars, Varsha and Srirang stunned judges Madhuri Dixit Nene and Suniel Shetty, along with star guest Bhagyashree.
Apart from dancing, Varsha brought the art of making viral reels onstage, giving tips to her dance companion Srirang.

Her incandescent beauty, innocent sensuality, and effervescent persona still send hearts aflutter and earned her the sobriquet of “Venus of Indian films”, but Madhubala’s enigmatic and beguiling smile and charm masked a lifetime of pain and suffering.
Madhubala, who passed away on this day (February 23) in 1969, earned tributes that have rarely been matched, leave alone surpassed.
She acted in a film named after her when she was not even midway through her career, was being copied or parodied when she was still acting, and is possibly the only Indian, film or otherwise, with a song dedicated to her being played at the Olympics.
She was also compared to the near-contemporary Marilyn Monroe – the two would pass away within a few years of each other, both aged 36, but did not welcome this as she did not consider herself a sex symbol.

Notorious for terrorising at least two generations of top heroes – in reel life – with just his trademark glare, steely voice, and facial expressions ranging from ferocious to sneering, he especially stood out for his film relations with Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, whom he once bested onscreen with two words.
In one standard of the lost-and-found potboiler genre, Amitabh, with his role’s habitual insouciance, asks a stern-looking, impeccably-dressed character: “Aap kaun hai mai-baap?”. Pat came the terse reply: “Tumhara baap”.
This was “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977) – one of the 11 that Pran, born on this day (February 12) in 1920 – did with the Big B, playing with his father two times more or a reluctant ally. Of these, at least 9 are intrinsic to the Bachchan legend, including “Zanjeer” (1973), “Don” (1978), “Naseeb” (1981), “Kaalia” (1981), “Sharaabi” (1984), and “Shahenshah” (1988)

I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

Amitabh Bachchan’s Film With Subhash Ghai Was Shelved After A Showdown & Then Boney Kapoor Pitched Ram Lakhan (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Old-age Bollywood is an era where a lot happened and was never revealed. Most of the stories were slid under covers, and many of them were shared and remembered in memories but weren’t published ever. One such story happened on one of the elaborate sets of Subhash Ghai’s film that starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead.
The angry young man was the muse for the showman of the industry, and they were working on a film titled Devaa. The shoot began in 1987. The film also starred Raaj Kumar, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Shammi Kapoor, and Ila Arun, and the music was given by Laxmikant Pyarelal. However, the film was eventually shelved. Guess why? Because of Big B, cheating Ghai and their regular ego-clashes.

It was still some years before he attained iconic status as a Bollywood villain while revealing his real identity to the bemused hero in his trademark soft yet menacing drawl, but before Ajit, whose birth anniversary falls on January 27, became the “Loin”, he had to receive a salutary lesson in dealing with big cats onscreen – from Balraj Sahni.
Ajit recalled they were shooting for costume swashbuckler “Dharti” (1970) – a remake of Tamil film “Sivandha Mann” with Rajendra Kumar stepping into the shoes of Sivaji Ganesan, and a scene had him, as the evil Diwan, coming down on a lift with a tiger on a leash to where Sahni was waiting.
However, Sahni refused to go along, noting that he had agreed to “work with humans, not beasts”, and the scene had to be shot without him.
After this, Ajit, in an article for Urdu film magazine ‘Shama’ in 1975, said that he...

Animal Box Office Day 1 Rampage: Ranbir Kapoor Beats Footfalls Of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, 63.80 Crore Vs 75 Crore… (Picture Credit: IMDb)
“Animal is a different beast, and it won’t accommodate in your tiny cage,” remember when Shammi Kapoor said, “Yeh bada jaanwar hai, yeh aapke chote pinjre mein nahi samayega, yeh apni duniya banayega,” about Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar, he meant it. Animal box office collection is on a rampage mode, and Rk has done the unimaginable.
When Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan collected historical figures on day 1, many people commented how it would take years for other actors from Bollywood to match this. Cut to a few months later, a star who has never played in the commercial zone (apart from a very forgettable Besharam) comes in and shatters everything.
Yes, with the opening day of 63.80 crores, Ranbir Kapoor has not only surpassed Pathaan’s day...
