This Upcoming Stranger Things Replacement Is a TV Remake of 1 of the Creepiest Movies of the 1980s
Image
Italian horror maestro Dario Argento is known for ultraviolent, hyper-stylized spectacles that are among the greatest genre films ever made. His most excitingly bizarre effort is easily 1985's Phenomena, starring Jennifer Connelly as a schoolgirl with a secret straight out of a Stephen King story. The legendary Italian production company Titanus has just announced their intention to turn the story into a TV series — which, if done well, could be very exciting for fans of Stranger Things and Yellowjackets.

In Phenomena, a savage serial killer stalks the students of a Swiss boarding school, and teen outcast Jennifer Connelly has one major line of defense: her psychic connection to insects. Her power helps her close in on the murderer and navigate the perils of private school, all in the course of a feature film — but a series-length expansion of this unique story could be the perfect replacement for Stranger Things after its 2025 finale.

Kevin Costner Wishes He Was A Better Actor In One Of His Movies
Image
At the outset of 1987, Kevin Costner was best known as the cocky gunslinger Jake in Lawrence Kasdan's Western romp "Silverado." This was a make-good role from the director, who'd cut Costner out of "The Big Chill" because his portrayal of the deceased Alex didn't play well with test audiences; basically, the ensemble cast had done such a great job of building up Alex's significance that the then unknown Costner couldn't live up to the legend. And while it was a nice gesture on Kasdan's part, "Silverado" didn't quite catch fire at the box office in the summer of 1985.

So when Costner landed the plum role of Eliot Ness in Brian De Palma's 1987 gangster saga "The Untouchables," Paramount Pictures mounted a publicity offensive to sell the appealing 32-year-old actor as a major movie star who'd at long last arrived. Decked out in fine Giorgio Armani threads and armed with razor-sharp David Mamet dialogue,...

Rome Mia Market: True Colours Founders Talk Move Into TV Sales Under New Managing Director Elliot Gustin-Hollman, Announce Lineup (Exclusive)
Image
Nearly 10 years after its launch, Italian sales company True Colours is branching out from feature films into the TV content space under the new management of Elliot Gustin-Hollman, formerly with Paris-based distribution powerhouse Newen Connect.

The move into TV sales is being made by True Colours – which is co-owned by Italy’s Indigo Film and Lucky Red – after these companies increasingly ventured into scripted dramas over the past decade. And these Italian shows, made by indie producers, need to be sold outside of Italy with the proper dedication and curation.

“Ten years ago we saw the opportunity to start a film sales company and it paid off,” said Indigo Film partner Carlotta Calori, adding that True Colours has become a reliable international film distributor not just for them but for other Italian producers. And “over in time, even for producers outside Italy.”

“Now we are looking to do the same thing with TV shows,...

How Paul Schrader “Persuaded” Barry Diller to Replace John Travolta With Richard Gere in ‘American Gigolo’
Image
Paul Schrader, at the age of 78, is getting a bit philosophical, a trifle introspective and, if the truth be told, extremely pessimistic about the future.

The legendary former film critic turned screenwriter-director — his long list of credits includes, as screenwriter, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980) and, as writer-director, American Gigolo (1980), First Reformed (2017) and this year’s Oh, Canada — will arrive in Tuscany this week, as a special guest of the Lucca Film Festival. On Sept. 25, he will teach a master class to university students, and the day after, on Sept. 26, he will receive a lifetime achievement award. There will also be a retrospective of his greatest films.

THR Roma caught up with Schrader in New York, just before he hopped his flight for Italy. Before dishing the dirt, and talking about the trials and tribulations of John Travolta, Schrader went all metaphysical.

Paul, you are coming to Lucca.

David Fincher Was ‘Booted’ Out of Town for Fight Club While Brad Pitt Was Stoned to Heaven: ‘We were fairly run out of town for being fascists’
Image
In Hollywood history, only a few films have left a lasting impact like the 1999 Fight Club. With characters like Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden, Helena Bonham Carter’s Marla Singer, and even Edward Norton’s The Narrator, the film has gone on to become a cult classic. However, the David Fincher movie was not always seen as an iconic one. In fact, when it first premiered 25 years ago, critics who got to see it at the Venice Film Festival were not too impressed.

With the film’s rather edgy behavior, the infamous midnight screening of the Pitt movie ended with the director and actors being booed as the curtains closed.

David Fincher discusses the 1999 Fight Club premiere

Just last year, the iconic director, David Fincher made his way back to the Venice Film Festival for the first time in 24 years.

Martin Scorsese Is a Perfectionist Auteur in Meta Kith for Giorgio Armani Ad — Watch
Image
Martin Scorsese was already a fashion icon. Now, he’s reveling in that spotlight.

The auteur leads the latest campaign for streetwear brand Kith, which famously selects iconic stars such as Willem Dafoe and Steve Buscemi to lead their ads. Think Skims level marketing genius, but even Kim Kardashian can’t top anything with Scorsese starring.

The “Killers of the Flower Moon” director appears in the debut ad for Kith for Giorgio Armani, marking the first-ever collaboration in Giorgio Armani’s history.

“Through his revolutionary and era-defining work in cinema, Mr. Scorsese is an artistic icon,” the official release reads. “He is also a longtime friend of Mr. Armani, which led him to direct ‘Made in Milan’ — a documentary about the designer’s life and the growth of the brand. His steadfast representation of his hometown, New York, is a value shared and respected by fellow native, Ronnie Fieg. For these reasons and more,...

Armani Hosts Star-Studded Soiree at Venice Film Festival With Richard Gere, Cate Blanchett
Image
This is the seventh year that Armani has been the official beauty sponsor of the Venice International Film Festival, getting actresses from Cate Blanchett to Sydney Sweeney red carpet ready. The festival kicked off on Aug. 28 and will continue until Sept. 7, with stars including Blanchett, Clara Galle, Kaya Scodelario and Ncuti Gatwa — as well as some festival guests — touched up in the brand’s Luminous Silk line.

Armani is hoisted up with its own luxurious beauty suite at the Excelsior Hotel on the island of Lido. This year the brand’s beauty products on display are the Luminous Silk foundation and the Luminous Silk Acqua highlighter — which hasn’t launched yet but was a pre-launch just for the festival. It works to blend the complexion, giving it a glow, while the Prisma Glass lip gloss with its oil-in-glass technology gives the face multidimensional volume and shine.

On Saturday night, Armani...

Review: Paul Schrader’s ‘American Gigolo’ on Limited Edition Arrow Video 4K Uhd
Image
Many of the shots that open American Gigolo are angled far above high-price escort Julian Kay (Richard Gere) as he goes about his date. The bird’s-eye view on him captures the materialistic glamor in which he walks—designer clothes, a Mercedes convertible—while also placing it at enough of a distance to remove any identification or pleasure on our part. All at once, Julian is defined both as a man who delights in consumer culture while being a product himself, a person who’s constantly using himself as a model for the very things he buys.

Writer-director Paul Schrader routinely emphasizes this detachment in further sketching out the details of Julian’s life and demeanor. The man lives in a spacious apartment with modern decor, but the ample negative space of the flat stresses how it feels less like a home and more like a showroom for a lifestyle.

Richard Gere Comes Full Circle With Cannes Title ‘Oh, Canada’
Image
It’s been more than four decades since Paul Schrader and Richard Gere worked together on the seminal American Gigolo. Some 40 years after they impressed upon audiences the power of a well-tailored Giorgio Armani suit, the director and star have reteamed for Oh, Canada.

The film, which is premiering in the Cannes Film Festival competition and is being sold out of the fest by Arclight Films and WME Independent, sees Gere play Leonard Fife, a renowned muckraking documentarian who, as he is dealing with a terminal illness, decides to sit for a documentary to tell the truth about his own life story while his wife and longtime filmmaking partner, Emma (Uma Thurman), listens in the wings. The story flashes back to his younger, unmoored self (Jacob Elordi) who stumbles into a career as a documentarian and travels to Canada under the auspices of dodging the Vietnam draft, but is revealed...

What’s the Story Behind the ‘I Told Ya’ T-Shirt in ‘Challengers’?
Image
When Zendaya attended a screening of her new sultry tennis drama Challengers this week, she wore a gray T-shirt with the words “I Told Ya” printed in bold black letters. The casual shirt was a noticeable change from the crisp whites and sour greens of the tennis-themed couture the star has donned during the Challengers international press tour, but it too was a callback to the movie.

The “I Told Ya” tee is something of a character in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers — a film that follows tennis prodigy Tashi (Zendaya...

Giorgio Armani Weighs in on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
Image
Giorgio Armani is not Donatella Versace. He doesn’t like politics. He doesn’t like controversy. He never gets out of line on current political events. He loves to talk only about fashion. Most of all, his own.

Donatella Versace, for her part, often takes a stand. Her speech on the stage of Milan’s La Scala Theater during the Fashion Awards last year was memorable. A harsh frontal attack on Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni for her discriminatory policies toward same-sex parents, it was heard around the world.

Although he might be sensitive to the topic, Giorgio Armani, on the other hand, for one of his show finales a few seasons ago, paraded five couples — each composed only of a man and a woman, couples ostensibly heterosexual and traditional — down the runway. “It’s a precise choice I wanted. To see an attractive, serious couple again,” the designer admitted...

Giorgio Armani’s Couture Show During the Venice Film Fest Draws Sophia Loren, Kerry Washington and Jessica Chastain
Image
A highlight of the first weekend of the 80th Venice International Film Festival was seeing Giorgio Armani appear on the catwalk, visibly excited, moved, smiling and proudly satisfied with his work. He then advanced graceful and happy, in his impeccable blue tuxedo holding hands with the model Agnese Zogla.

The moment was experienced by the more than 500 guests at Armani’s One Night Only event, where the world of cinema flocked to pay homage to King Giorgio, with guests including Sophia Loren, who has always been his beloved friend, accompanied by her son Edoardo Ponti, actor Benicio Del Toro, actress Jessica Chastain, and directors Ang Lee, Gabriele Salvatores and Giuseppe Tornatore.

The standing ovation lasted several minutes from an audience composed of numerous couples from the Italian film star system: from Sergio Castellitto and Margaret Mazzantini and Pierfrancesco Favino and Anna Ferzetti to Raul Bova and Rocio Munoz Morales to Kasia Smutniak and Domenico Procacci.

Venice: Luxury Brands Plan a Full Schedule of Parties — Even With Fewer Stars on the Lido
Image
Just as the Venice Film Festival was establishing itself as one of the most thrilling red carpets on the festival and awards show circuit — in 2022, The New York Times called its fashion parade the “most glamorous” of the year thanks to wow appearances from Timothée Chalamet, Tessa Thompson and Florence Pugh — the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are stamping out a significant portion of the Hollywood star power and its attendant style at the 80th edition of the event.

“The real appeal is brought by the American stars without a doubt,” Piero Piazzi, the president of Women Management modeling agency, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There can’t be a definitive comparison; it all depends from years to year depending on the films and stars present. [But] Cannes will certainly be considered more prestigious this year as the strike by American actors was not underway in May.”

In the last few days though,...

Ke Huy Quan’s Stylist Talks About His “Classic, Timeless” Oscars Look (Exclusive)
Image
Few awards season runs have matched Ke Huy Quan’s winning streak this year, with the actor capturing trophies at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild and Independent Spirit Awards for his supporting role in 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once. Little did the actor and his stylist, Chloe Takayanagi, know that it would all culminate at the 2023 Oscars when they first worked together when the film’s press tour kicked off.

“Ke’s first appearance for the film was at SXSW [in 2022], and nobody knew anything about the movie at the time,” Takayanagi recalls. “So yes, it was a little difficult to get clothes for those early premieres, though I remember Thom Browne and Giorgio Armani generously loaning from the start.”

What a difference a year makes. As the film has gained traction and buzz, Takayanagi says other designers and brands were happy to jump in with pieces.

Giorgio Armani Evacuates From Island Off The Coast Of Sicily After Sudden Wildfires
Image
Giorgio Armani, the luxury fashion designer, had to make a quick escape in his yacht along with some neighbors and a crowd of guests visiting his summer villa after two wildfires broke out on the Italian island of Pantelleria.

The island, off the coast of Sicily, suddenly caught fire in two places reasonably soon after one another, causing police investigating to suspect arson as the cause.

Armani and his guests evacuated the island overnight safely and went to Sicily, and no one else was hurt in the blaze. Local police say the fire was stopped before destroying any property, including the designer’s multi-million dollar summer home.

Other celebs have had villas on the island as far back as 2003 when Pantellaria actually came under scrutiny for allowing people like Sting, Madonna, Armani and Julia Roberts to erect massive homes in potential violation of usual building regulations.

Firefighters worked through the...

The Untouchables 4K
Image
This big screen, big star crowd-pleaser is a whopping entertainment yet too disjointed to satisfy as a gangster movie. It can ignore history to make its points, but what is gained by killing off the only characters we really love? Audiences didn’t feel shortchanged: Sean Connery and Robert De Niro deliver strong characterizations and Ennio Morricone’s music is ideal. Brian De Palma’s visual instincts are at full strength too; the show is marvelous to look at. It’s a real winner, at least when its not running in knee-jerk Scarface overkill mode.

2022 Oscars Red Carpet: Jessica Chastain, Zendaya and More (Updating Live)
Image
The red carpet has commenced on Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. The 94th Academy Awards kick off Sunday evening at the Dolby Theatre and nominees are dazzling before the show. Among those nominated, Variety highlighted Ariana DeBose, Kristen Stewart and Jessica Chastain as some of the year’s best dressed. Previous appearances this season included “West Side Story” star DeBose in a daring Giorgio Armani suit during the film’s L.A. premiere and Stewart’s silky ensemble at the Venice premiere of her intense turn as Princess Diana in “Spencer.”

Even as the Oscars celebrate cinema, the ceremony is no stranger to bold political statements. From stars donning the colors of the Ukrainian flag to vocal condemnation of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, the year has been rife with protests both on and off the carpet.

Expected arrivals include “Coda” star Troy Kotsur, who could...

Hollywood is out and about in the days and nights leading up to the Oscars. Here, Variety reporters go inside the hottest parties and events.

How Zz Top Conquered MTV With the ‘Eliminator’ Trilogy
Image
The world is mourning today for the late, great Dusty Hill of Zz Top, who died Tuesday. He was a beer drinker, hell-raiser, sharp-dressed broom duster, and bassist in the same trio for more than 50 years. But Dusty was more than just a legendary bluesman — he and Zz Top helped define music videos in the early Eighties, conquering MTV with their Eliminator Trilogy. Tina Turner shares her ‘guilty pleasure’
Tina Turner in Brother Bear (2003)
Legendary singer Tina Turner says she misses her son Craig as much as ever. He had committed suicide in 2018.

"I was in Paris with Erwin (her husband) to celebrate our anniversary and attend our friend Giorgio Armani's fashion show. He was close to his younger brother, but he suffered in silence. It wasn't until his sudden death I began to understand that Craig faced serious mental health challenges," she added.

Craig's death came after Tina herself had battled suicidal thoughts, and even attempted to take her...
