It’s not just Newport society balls that need to be perfectly on theme and planned to a T. The de rigeur grandeur and opulence of “The Gilded Age” is the result of months of planning, very careful maneuvering, and miles of fake marbling. But the visual language of the show has ever so slowly expanded over the HBO series’s three seasons to be larger and more dynamic. The trick to making “The Gilded Age” even more transporting, according to cinematographer Manuel Billeter, has been to enhance our perspective both outwards and inwards.
Billeter has been behind the camera on “The Gilded Age” since Season 1, and started out by using lens choices to follow the show’s demarcation between the “Old Money” Van Rhijns and the “New Money” Russells. Scenes where the former powered the story — usually, let’s be real, Christine Baranski’s Agnes — were shot on anamorphic lenses,...

A near death. Two shocking engagements. Sisters finally reconciling. The Gilded Age Season 3 is officially behind us, which means it's the perfect time to dive into its future Emmy chances.
Remember, the Television Academy's eligibility period runs from June 1 of one year to May 31 of the next, which means the third season of HBO's buzzy, soapy costume drama will contend at the 2026 Emmys. The eight-episode installment wrapped on Sunday to great fanfare, and a fourth season has already been ordered.
In the Season 3 finale, George Russell (Morgan Spector) survives a gunshot wound thanks to the quick work of Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica), who happened to be next door visiting his love interest, Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). Despite the violence temporarily bringing George and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) together, he ultimately decides to separate from his wife because of the way she always puts her own interests ahead of his — i.

The Gilded Age creator Julian Fellowes, who is also responsible for bringing Downton Abbey to life, is speaking out about that upsetting season three death.
Spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched the episodes.
Keep reading to find out more…
Julian was asked about the decision to kill off Oscar’s secret lover John Adams, played by Claybourne Elder.
The death caused great turmoil and pain for Oscar (Blake Ritson), and led to a scene where he almost came out to his mother Agnes (Christine Baranski), aunt Ada (Cynthia Nixon), and cousin Marian (Louisa Jacobson).
When asked about killing off John Adams, Julian told Deadline, “Well, we wanted to explore in different ways the difficulties of being homosexual in that period when it was still illegal. And of course for me, I can remember when it was still illegal when I was young. It’s not long ago, any of this.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “The Gilded Age,” now streaming on HBO Max.
Now that HBO’s “The Gilded Age” has steamrolled audiences with a grand third season finale, we’re left mitigating the fallout of marriages and social alliances (all while trying to define the word “geegaws“). But there’s a clear winner in this year’s turn-of-the-century New York rat race created by Julian Fellowes: Jack Trotter.
Played with confident sweetness by actor Ben Ahlers, Jack has been a beloved “downstairs” member of the cast since day one — a footman brimming with American ingenuity, who creates the world’s first alarm clock and gets rich in the process. But Ahlers’ Jack is not content to become a nouveau riche nightmare, having spent the bulk of recent episodes dragging his feet about leaving the home and his employers, Agnes and Ada (Christine Baranski...

Any actor will tell you that it's a tall order to convincingly play drunk; try too hard and you can come off as insincere, but it can also ring false if you don't go far enough with the act. According to Jessica Radloff's 2022 book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series," star Johnny Galecki, who played Leonard Hofstadter on Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady's beloved CBS sitcom for 12 years and the same number of seasons, had a tricky way to convincingly fake his intoxication.
"Acting drunk is really hard to play, so I would ask Scott London, our prop master, to cut up a dish sponge into pieces, soak it in whiskey, and put it in a disposable coffee cup with a lid on it and give it to me," Galecki revealed to Radloff in the book. I would just smell that...

This post contains spoilers for "Wednesday" and "Addams Family Values."
It's a new school year rife with woe, as "Wednesday" season 2 promises even more scares and mysteries for its titular protagonist. By the time the season picks up, Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) has undergone quite the transformation since she first arrived at Nevermore Academy. Indeed, she's far more receptive now to having friends and has (unwittingly) even gained some social footing after defeating season 1's big bad, Tyler (Hunter Doohan).
But normalcy is a foreign concept for an Addams, which is why Wednesday has to contend with fresh horrors in season 2, part 1, which includes hunting down a persistent stalker who has been tailing her since the season 1 finale. Juggling this issue with the sudden presence of her family on campus, Wednesday is forced to navigate some complicated emotions as she finds herself having to decide between sticking to her isolationist...

Harry Richardson has been a delight portraying Larry Russell, the only son of Bertha and George Russell, especially on this third season of The Gilded Age.
As his relationship with Marian or Ms. Brook (Louisa Jacobson) has blossomed into a beautiful romance, their coupling has become a fan favorite. From knowing glances to stolen kisses, viewers have also become engulfed in their love — as well as in their agony. Marian has struggled with finding love, particularly one accepted by society norms of the day. Her Aunt Agnes (Christine Baranski) doesn’t think the young Mr. Russell is a proper suitor. But fortunate for Marian, her Aunt Ada (Cynthia Nixon), as well as good friend Peggy (Denée Benton), have been on board.
And that boded well for Larry until Marian discovered he lied to her and her aunts about going to dinner with his buddies at a restaurant and instead visited “a place of ill repute.

The Gilded Age just keeps reaching new heights as it heads toward its Season 3 finale.
The penultimate episode drew 4.6M viewers in the three days since it debuted on HBO on Sunday, setting another series record, per Warner Bros. Discovery. This is now the fourth consecutive week that the third season has managed a new series high audience.
Ahead of Sunday’s finale, the show is apparently drawing in new viewers at a record pace. The company says that The Gilded Age is currently adding viewers at a rate nearly 50% higher than in previous seasons.
Of course, newcomers are playing catch up, so much of this viewership is actually boosting the previous seasons, too. Wbd says that Season 1 viewership was up approximately 30% last week compared to the same week leading into last season’s Episode 7.
This bodes incredibly well for the show’s fourth season, as it has already received a renewal from HBO.

By the time Season 3, Episode 7 of The Gilded Age, had aired, the period drama left the fate of one key character hanging in the balance. In the third season's penultimate episode. The patriarch of the show's main family, Morgan Spector's George Russell, has spent much of Season 3 trying to save his business. While it seems like he might have been able to ultimately achieve that, the enemies he has made along the way might just be too many. Season 3, Episode 7, titled "Ex-Communicated," provides a bigger blow for audiences as George Russell's (Spector) fate is left unclear following a gunshot before the screen cuts to black. This follows the sudden death of John Adams' (Claybourne Elder) in the previous episode. So that begs the question. Will we have to endure two major deaths in one season?

HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age has given a shocker of an episode to the fans, only a week after killing off the fan-favorite John Adams last week. The period drama centers around the Russell family, a ‘new money’ family of the upper class in New York in the 1880s. The show chronicles their financial dealing as well as their personal lives with various socialites in the neighborhood.
John Adams was one of the other socialites in the same circles, who was in a relationship with Oscar van Rhijn. Their relationship was largely a secret, and they had not come out to anyone. Writers Julian Fellows and Sonja Warfield mentioned that Adams’ death was necessary to the story (via TV Line).
None of the upcoming developments [for Oscar] would have been achievable if John Adams had lived. We were quite careful to kill him with a straight accident, not with anything with political overtones.

For a number of viewers, The Gilded Age looked — or rather, sounded — a little different last night.
According to some social media users, the latest episode of the Emmy-winning HBO period drama debuted on streamer HBO Max with an accidental language swap that automatically played the episode in Spanish despite being on the English-language setting.
“. @hbomax The Gilded Age is currently only playing in Spanish on my app and I cannot follow what is happening to Señora Russell. Help! Ayuda!” wrote The Daily Beast’s Kevin Fallon in one viral post.
The glitch, as some quickly figured out, was easily resolved by tooling with the platform’s settings — ironically, by changing the audio to “Spanish (Latin America)” for the English version. Deadline confirmed that the issue has since been resolved.
Earlier today, both the platform and star Carrie Coon poked fun at the snafu online.

Yes, Sunday’s episode of The Gilded Age ended on a dramatic (and potentially fatal) note for a key member of the show’s cast — but that’s actually not the heartbreaking storyline we’d like to discuss right now.
Instead, we need to talk about Oscar, who discovered that his lover John Adams left him a house upstate, following his own tragic death by speeding horse carriage. When he returned home in a puddle of grief, he lashed out at Agnes, essentially outing himself in the process. Here was their exchange:

[This story contains major spoilers from season three, episode seven of The Gilded Age, “Ex-Communicated.”]
The seventh episode of The Gilded Age‘s third season, titled “Ex-Communicated,” literally ended with a bang. Somebody shot George Russell. Or at him. Viewers aren’t sure, as we saw a bullet headed for George and then the screen went black.
The Gilded Age executive producer and director Salli Richardson-Whitfield, who helmed this episode and the finale, is not giving up those goods to The Hollywood Reporter. But she does speak on other pivotal developments, and there are quite a few.
As harrowing as the prospect of losing George (spectacularly portrayed by Morgan Spector) is, a lot happened in this episode. Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane) released a fictional book about New York society that contained thinly veiled details of the lives of Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy), Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) and more, and thought he could just carry on as before. The following reveals major plot points from tonight’s episode of HBO’s The Gilded Age, “Ex-Communicated.”
The Gilded Age has always kept viewers in the loop about Oscar van Rhijn’s (Blake Ritson) sexuality; however, his family is another matter.
In last week’s episode, Oscar’s former lover and friend, John Adams (Claybourne Elder), was tragically killed after a runaway horse and carriage accidentally ran him over. It was a heartbreaking and shocking moment for Oscar and viewers of the series, which is not known for killing people off like many other shows.
Oscar is dealing with extreme grief in “Ex-Communicated” and trying his hardest to seem as minimally affected as possible in an attempt to hide what John really meant to him. He leaves home as normal, with his mother Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski), aunt Ada Forte (Cynthia Nixon), and cousin Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) seeing him off.

[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers through Episode 8 of Season 3 of “The Gilded Age”]
We’ve come a long way on “The Gilded Age” from the marquee moment of drama being Agnes (Christine Baranski) crossing from one side of the street to the other. Season 3 of the HBO series has traveled from Arizona to across the Atlantic, with of course plenty of time spent in our favorite old (and new) homes in New York. That presents a new kind of challenge for production designer Bob Shaw and his team, now that they’ve mastered the miles of marbling and ostentatious opera house decorations of Seasons 1 and 2.
The Russell Mansion and the show’s New York backlot live on Long Island — it feels appropriate that, by contrast, the Van Rhijn house is in Queens. And of course, the “The Gilded Age” production design and locations team is still getting through their wishlist of period-appropriate homes and mansions around the East Coast. But...

Tomorrow, Netflix is premiering Leanne, a new sitcom. Some will think of this as a vehicle for stand-up comic Leanne Morgan, which is fair: It is her name in the title, she’s credited as a co-creator and the show revolves around her character, also named Leanne, navigating a midlife split from her longtime husband Bill (Ryan Stiles). Some will categorize it among the many multicam sitcoms for which its co-creator, Chuck Lorre, is known, including Two and A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Dharma & Greg. But discerning viewers will have marked “New Kristen Johnston show” on their calendars as soon as Morgan, during her guest co-host stint, threw to a preview clip on Today’s fourth hour.
For any who doubt whether Johnston should always be considered a headliner — including in Leanne, where Johnston’s character Carol is undeniably the sidekick to her sister, the show...

Chuck Lorre is basically the king of sitcoms, and honestly, if you’ve spent any time watching TV over the past three decades, you’ve probably laughed at his work. The guy’s been cranking out hit after hit since the ’90s, mastering that perfect blend of heart and humor that keeps us coming back for more.
From his early days dealing with network drama to becoming the mastermind behind some of television’s biggest phenomena, Lorre’s shows have this uncanny ability to find the funny in life’s messiest moments. With 12 original series spanning multiple networks and the streaming world, his work has evolved with the times while keeping that signature Chuck Lorre magic intact.

[This story contains spoilers from season three, episode six of The Gilded Age.]
It’s hard to believe The Gilded Age is winding down. The latest episode “If You Want to Cook an Omelette” is number six of just eight, yet the drama is not de-escalating — only revving up, especially with the just-in news of a season four renewal.
In the latest episode, Bertha (Carrie Coon) traveled to England to “fix” things for Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) who expressed her unhappiness to her father George (Morgan Spector) who, of course, let his wife have it. Intriguingly, her visit made a huge impact not just on Gladys, but perhaps on how fans view her actions. Could Bertha have been right about Gladys marrying the Duke all along?
Just as Gladys and Hector (Ben Lamb) may be finding their groove towards happy matrimony, there appears to be trouble brewing for Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Bertha, and George’s son Larry (Harry Richardson) who just became engaged,...

There's some great news to share straight out of 1800s New York City, and by that, of course, I mean HBO has revealed the fate of the underrated hit series The Gilded Age. As season 3 continues to increase the show's ratings year over year, the cable network announced the season 4 renewal two weeks ahead of the upcoming season 3 finale on Aug. 10.
According to HBO, on-the-night viewership has increased for all five weeks during season 3, growing by 20% compared to the numbers from season 2. Christine Baranski absolutely rocks, and that's a fact. Ever since the 1980s, Baranski has been a staple of the screen and stage, winning her first Emmy for playing the hard-drinking sidekick Maryann Thorpe on "Cybill" and two Tony awards as of this writing (for Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing" in 1984 and Neil Simon's "Rumors" in 1989). You might know her from the "Mamma Mia!" movies, as Diane Lockhart on either "The Good Wife" or "The Good Fight," or from HBO's luxurious drama "The Gilded Age," but fans of "The Big Bang Theory" know that she played Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who's the mother of Johnny Galecki's Leonard Hofstadter, on the series. Baranski ultimately picked up four Emmy nominations for the guest role, but how did she get involved in the first place?
