NBC has recently added one of the most beloved movies ever made, The Shawshank Redemption, to its Peacock streaming service. This classic 1994 prison drama has long been praised for its powerful story and memorable performances, and now Peacock subscribers can watch it anytime.

The Shawshank Redemption is based on a novella by Stephen King called Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The movie tells the story of Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, a banker who is sent to Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover—crimes he insists he did not commit.

While in prison, Andy forms a close friendship with Ellis “Red” Redding, a contraband smuggler played by Morgan Freeman. Together, they navigate the harsh realities of prison life. The film also stars Bob Gunton as the corrupt prison warden, Samuel Norton, with strong supporting roles from William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore.

Why Brad Pitt Rejected Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

There are few movies as widely beloved as director Frank Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption." Based on Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," the 1994 film has been the top-rated movie on IMDb's top 250 list for going on two decades. That's in no small part thanks to the film's stellar cast, which is led by Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Red. However, it seems the movie's ensemble could have been even more impressive in retrospect as Brad Pitt, who was one of Hollywood's brightest rising stars in the mid-1990s, very nearly signed on for it.

In a 2019 piece by USA Today celebrating the 25th anniversary of "The Shawshank Redemption," Darabont discussed how he originally cast Pitt in the movie as Tommy, a young punk who's been in and out of prison...

But what exactly happened? Why did Brad Pitt not star in the film? Was he offered a lead role? And who finally played that part? Read on to find out.

Alert: Missing Persons Unit season 3 premiere is almost here (and here's everything to remember)
Image
Alert: Missing Persons Unit is coming back for season 3, so here’s a quick refresher on what to know about the show!

Premiering on Fox in January 2023, Alert: Missing Persons Unit focuses on the Philadelphia police department’s Missing Persons Unit, which, as the name implies, hunts for missing folks in the city.

The central characters are Captain Nikki Batista (Dania Ramirez) and her ex-husband, Detective Jason Grant (Scott Caan). The two had been married only to break up following the abduction and apparent murder of their son, Keith. They were thus overjoyed when the now-teenage Keith appeared to turn up alive.

Season 1 took various twists and turns before the finale revealed that “Keith” was actually Max, a youth pushed by his criminal mother to pose as Keith to trick Nikki and Jason out of money. Having come to care for them, Max didn’t want to go through with...

‘Snow White: A Tale of Terror’ – Revisiting the 1997 Horror Adaptation Starring Sigourney Weaver
Image
Cinderella’s stepsisters mutilating their feet so they can fit into slippers, a heartbroken mermaid taking her own life, Red Riding Hood unknowingly cannibalizing her grandmother — these and other upsetting details tend to be omitted from modernizations of classic fairy tales. This kind of watering-down, often called “Disneyfication” for obvious reasons, may be seen as a problematic practice, but as it happens, the commercial and sterile variants only make their darker counterparts more effective.

One such case is 1997’s Snow White: A Tale of Terror, a most aberrant fairy tale adaptation.

Fairy tales and suchlike are eternal in show business, yet in and after the 1990s they were especially prolific, due in large part to Disney’s enviable success with the model. And it wasn’t just animated adaptations getting the greenlight either; live-action takes were also popular. However, Michael Cohn’s flesh-and-blood treatment of the always-fashionable “Snow White” story...

‘You Might Also Like’ – Revisiting Osgood Perkins’ Episode of ‘The Twilight Zone’
Image
While the average anthology series doesn’t require a proper conclusion to tie up loose ends, it only seemed fitting for the third and most recent revival of The Twilight Zone to seek some sense of finality. After all, the 2019 take never shied away from acknowledging its progenitor, directly or otherwise, and that reverence became a sort of throughline.

In the Jordan Peele–produced and hosted update, tribute to Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone was routinely made via easter eggs, or remake in the case of “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet,” however, Osgood “Oz” Perkins’ episode “You Might Also Like” was something of a sequel to a beloved Serling story. In what ultimately became the finale for Peele’s short-lived show, the director of Longlegs and The Monkey not only brought back iconic characters from the original series, he also offered a considerable glimpse into his own future as both a filmmaker and storyteller.

Dcu Actor Sean Gunn Explains the Differences Between His and Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lords
Image
Sean Gunn may voice Weasel and G.I. Robot in the animated series Creature Commandos, but regarding live-action, DC fans are going to recognize him as the DC Universe's Maxwell Lord. The character was previously played by Pedro Pascal in 2020's Wonder Woman 1984, although Gunn isn't worried about stepping into the role so soon after Pascal.

During an interview with The Kristian Harloff Show (via X), Gunn opened up about how his take on Maxwell Lord would differ drastically from Pascal's version in WW84. "I can tell you that the one obvious thing is it's me playing the role. It doesn't just mean I'm going to give a different interpretation," the actor started. "Your own body is the vessel for what you're doing, so obviously...no one is gonna confuse me and Pedro Pascal's performance. So we're obviously going to do something different."

‘Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark’ Is Leaving Netflix Next Week
Image
An underrated gem of a horror movie from producer Guillermo del Toro and director André Øvredal will be leaving Netflix by December 31, 2024, and it's definitely worth watching. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark premiered August 9, 2019, and became a worldwide hit, earning nearly $105 million from a $21 million budget.

The film is based on the classic children's series of horror anthology books of the same name by author Alvin Schwartz. Del Toro and Øvredal (Troll Hunter) delivered an instant classic that follows teenager Stella (Zoe Colletti) and her friends after they enter the haunted Bellows family home. The unsuspecting residents of Mill Valley must contend with the terror that's been unleashed.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a respectable 78% critical and 72% audience rating. It also did well enough at the box office to receive a theatrical re-release that October to capitalize on Halloween.

Suits is one of the best legal shows out there, but there are more to enjoy for fans of the series!

Suits has been one of the bigger TV success stories of the last few years. The original series ran on USA Network from 2011 to 2019, a great run that made it a huge rating smash. In 2023, the series hit Netflix and soon rocketed to the top of the viewing charts. That’s led to plans for a new revival series on NBC.

The show rests on the fun of the legal antics combined with great character work, such as the romances and fun banter of the characters. It joins a long list of legal dramas, many of them classic stuff like Law & Order centering on major cases. Yet others are fun in how they have a mix of great characters, sometimes offbeat cases and even some humor. If you’re a fan of Suits,...

Tim Robbins Says Ted Turners Efforts Saved Stephen King movie The Shawshank Redemption from Failure
Image
Frank Darabonts cinematic masterpiece, The Shawshank Redemption, has etched its place as one of the most beloved movies of all time. Released 30 years ago, it remains iconic and there is good reason for its enduring appeal, two of which are the profound narrative and the stellar performances of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. In a recent interview with The Guardian newspaper, Robbins revealed the name of an unexpected catalyst who played a vital role in helping The Shawshank Redemption find its audience Ted Turner.

We live in an era where streaming platforms dominate our viewing habits. It has changed the landscape for movies drastically, because now, algorithms decide which movie will be a blockbuster and gain widespread recognition. In his interview, Robbins reflected on these challenges and candidly acknowledged that his 1994 movie would not have found the same level of success had it been released today.

10 Movies That Changed The Book And Made Something Better
Image
Every movie adaptation of a book has to make a few changes, and these changes can often be beneficial. It seems as though it's become common practice for fans of a book to lament the changes that filmmakers make. It's much less common for people to highlight the times when a movie improves upon its source material, although this happens more frequently than people might think.

Some of the best book adaptations do much more than recreate the story as faithfully as possible. While directors and actors can add their own distinct flair, some movies benefit from fundamental changes to the books. Altering characters, cutting unnecessary subplots and changing the ending can all improve an adaptation. Making such drastic changes risks angering the fans of the book, but if it pays off, it can be a huge improvement.

Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption Named Best Movie of 1994
Image
1994 was a heck of a year for movies. From Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump, to The Lion King and The Crow, audiences were as the kids like to say eating well at the theater. However, there was one film that seemingly came out of nowhere to surprise everyone whose legacy still lives on to this day, as is evident by a recent Rotten Tomatoes fan poll that just crowned The Shawshank Redemption as the best movie of 1994.

Based on the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the Frank Darabont picture beat out some hefty competition in the poll to take the top spot, including Whoopi Goldbergs Corinna, Corinna, the coming of age dramedy Reality Bites, Wes Cravens New Nightmare, Jim Carreys The Mask, Disneys The Lion King, and finally, Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. 'Marginal Failure': The Shawshank Redemption Director Recalls Disappointing Theatrical Run
Image
The Shawshank Redemption remains a cinematic classic 30 years after its theatrical release. Director Frank Darabont credited the film's enduring success to critical acclaim and mounting support from audiences.

Director Frank Darabont said the critical praise boosted The Shawshank Redemption's eventual success. Initially snubbed at the box office, the film only gained a following (via word of mouth) after earning multiple nods at the Oscars. "Its initial release wasn't that successful," he told The Daily Beast. "In fact, I wouldn't even call it a success. It was kind of a marginal failure in 1994 yet it became the most rented video of 1995. I think that was for a number of reasons, primarily because it was nominated for seven Academy Awards." That turnaround has since fueled the film's appeal to audiences. "We didn't win a stinking award but it really piqued people's interest," he added.

The Shawshank Redemption Review: One Of The Most Faithful & Effective Stephen King Adaptations Ever
Image
Long before he brought the world of The Walking Dead to screens, Frank Darabont was establishing himself as one of the best Stephen King adaptation directors, particularly with The Shawshank Redemption. The 1994 prison drama was Darabont's second adaptation of a King story, preceded by his short film directorial debut with The Woman in the Room. He would go on to continue this trend with fellow prison drama The Green Mile and 2007's The Mist, both of which are certainly excellent movies, though they still didn't surpass The Shawshank Redemption.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark sequel has stalled

More than four years have gone by since it was announced that director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were re-teaming for a sequel to their cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books. Last year, Øvredal confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was still in the works and a script has been written, the project had just been slowed down by the pandemic, the making of his Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and the Hollywood strikes. We heard in December that writers/producers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman were fighting to get the sequel made… but now they have given a disappointing update to the folks at Collider: the sequel has stalled.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Writers Share Sequel Update With a Pun
Image
A sequel to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark continues to languish in development hell. While a screenplay has been finished, the writers don't know any more than the fans at this point about when the movie will be made.

Directed by Andr vredal, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was based on the iconic book series of the same name by writer Alvin Schwartz and illustrator Stephen Gammell. Dan and Kevin Hageman wrote the screenplay for the feature film adaptation, which presented an original story while utilizing some of the characters and tales from the books. Per Collider, the Hagemans revealed the current status of the sequel, confirming that they'd finished and turned in their screenplay. From that point, the two are just as much "in the dark" as the fans, using part of the movie's title to make the point.

‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’ Renewed for Third Season on Fox
Image
Fox will keep its Missing Persons Unit on the job for another season.

The network has renewed the drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit for a third season in 2024-25. The series will remain in production after season two wraps, which will bank episodes leading into next season and potentially serve as a hedge against a possible IATSE strike in the summer.

Alert is one of just two dramas Fox has aired in 2023-24 as the network relied heavily on its unscripted and animated rosters, which weren’t affected by last year’s dual strikes. Fox has yet to make a call on the other drama, The Cleaning Lady.

Alert stars Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez as Philadelphia detectives who head the city’s missing persons unit and work to find missing or abducted people and reunite them with loved ones. Adeola Role, Ryan Broussard and Alisha-Marie Ahamed also star...

‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’ Renewed For Season 3 By Fox
Image
Exclusive: Fox has given a Season 3 pickup to Alert: Missing Persons Unit. The renewal of the procedural drama, starring Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez, has been expected.

To make filming more cost-efficient for series producers Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment, Alert will remain in continuous production, segueing from the abbreviated-by-the-strikes second season to Season 3, whose episode count is still Tbd, I hear. There is an additional benefit to filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back — Fox will have fresh episodes of the series in case production is disrupted by an IATSE strike this summer.

There is no word yet on Fox’s other outstanding drama series, The Cleaning Lady. As Deadline has reported, it also is looking good for renewal.

'This Is So Easy': The Shawshank Redemption Star Finally Explains Famous Plot Hole
Image
One of the stars of The Shawshank Redemption has addressed what has often been described by fans as a glaring plot hole. Tim Robbins, who starred in the movie alongside Morgan Freeman, says that it's not a plot hole at all and actually has a very "easy" explanation.

Inspired by a Stephen King story, The Shawshank Redemption stars Robbins and Freeman as inmates at a maximum security prison. Robbins' character, Andy Dufresne, successfully escapes through a tunnel that was dug out of his cell that he'd kept hidden by hanging a poster. Some fans have questioned how the poster stayed on the wall after Andy's escape, and this was even asked by Freeman when the actors reunited at the TCM Film Festival.

“Chucky” Season 3: Episode 7 Review – The Show’s Bloodiest Episode to Date!
Image
Not even death can slow Chucky in “There Will Be Blood,” the penultimate episode of “Chucky” Season 3. With the killer receiving a mortal blow in the last episode, Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) can now take full advantage of the White House’s bizarre supernatural purgatory, leaving him free to continue his current reign of terror as a ghost. While that spells trouble for Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), it makes for an outrageously satisfying bloodbath heading into next week’s finale.

“There Will Be Blood” covers a lot of ground in short order, with Charles Lee Ray confronting his maker over his failures before he can continue his current path of destruction. Lexy, Jake, and Devon continue their desperate bid to find Lexy’s sister, which means seeking answers from the afterlife. They’re in luck, considering Warren Pryce (Gil Bellows) enlists...

“Sort of unnecessary and overkill”: Morgan Freeman Refused to Film 1 ‘Asinine’ Scene in The Shawshank Redemption as Movie Celebrates its 30th Anniversary
Image
Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins’ The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one of the best films released in 1994, the same year when Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were released. While the latter two managed to nab some Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption shockingly went empty-handed, but, it hasn’t undermined its reputation of being one of the best films of that decade.

Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption

The inspiring and heartwarming prison drama told the story of one man’s resilience and eventual freedom from being put into prison despite claims of innocence. The ending of the film saw the emotional reunion of Freeman and Robbins’ characters. It seems the original treatment of the film was slightly different, one which Freeman was vehemently against.

“Chucky” Season 3: Episode 6 Review – Ghosts and Gore Plunge the White House into Chaos and Terror
Image
The story threads converge in “Panic Room,” the sixth episode of “Chucky“ Season 3. In the previous episode, a death row-bound Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) demanded that a dying Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) “go down in a blaze of glory and take as many with you on your way out.” Considering the last episode also ended with the gruesome eye gouging of President James Collins (Devon Sawa), “Panic Room” plunges the White House into chaos and terror as Chucky lays the groundwork for his most ambitious plan yet.

Warren Pryce (Gil Bellows) continues to reveal his true colors, giving First Lady Charlotte Collins (Lara Jean Chorostecki) no room to grieve, let alone process what’s happened, before he enlists a clean-up crew to cover up the President’s death. Charlotte attempts to shield her children from the truth, even as she can barely hold it together, but finds herself plagued by...

“Chucky” Season 3: Episode 5 Review – Mid-Season Premiere Hysterically Lets Old Man Chucky Loose
Image
The back half of Don Mancini’s “Chucky“ Season 3 has finally arrived, which means the metaphorical training wheels are off. The first half of the season introduced new slaying grounds for the killer Good Guy doll, thrusting Chucky into the White House with its complicated tenants. Episode 5, “Death Becomes Her,” wastes no time addressing Episode 4’s massive dangling threads while barreling toward what’s sure to be an unpredictable battle for control.

The Halloween bloodbath at the end of Episode 4 did poor President James Collins (Devon Sawa) no favors, both for his career and declining mental health. Mistaking a disguised Chucky (Brad Dourif) for his deceased son Joseph has left him deeply troubled and convinced he’s haunted. First Lady Charlotte Collins (Lara Jean Chorostecki) is left to pick up the pieces while navigating her guilt, which is made worse by tricky CIA agent Warren Pryce (Gil Bellows).

Meanwhile, Jake Wheeler...

Image
Unthinkable, starring Samuel L. Jackson, has gained newfound popularity on Netflix with its controversial themes and intense scenes of torture. Despite mixed reviews, the movie's bold approach to its divisive topic and strong performances have attracted viewers to its resurgence. ‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’: First Look at New Boss Braun’s ‘Love-Hate Relationship’ With Team (Video)
Image
There’s a new boss in town in Alert: Missing Persons Unit Season 2, and as TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek with a first look at Gil Bellows as Inspector Hollis Braun shows, he’s not a fan of one of the members of Nikki’s (Dania Ramirez) team. In the clip from the Season 2 premiere (airing March 5), Braun introduces himself to Nikki. “Disregard the mustache, I lost a bet,” he says. “It’s very Commissioner Gordon,” she tells him. Quickly, their conversation turns to the work. He knows that “Mpu’s closure rate is excellent, truly stellar. But the Jason Grant situation—I know you two have history, but he’s a lawsuit waiting to happen,” Braun says of Scott Caan‘s character. “Jason Grant is also the best cop in Philly,” Nikki argues. “My team, all of us, we focus on getting the job done.” Watch the full...
