Hollywood needs better tax incentives, more solidarity from the stars and greater openness to new faces, if it is to survive and may yet be scuppered by algorithms and Silicon Valley.
This was the conclusion of a group of veteran L.A.-based producers exploring Hollywood’s future at the producer-focused Avp Summit in northern Italy this week.
“We all came here in our 20s. We all made our mark in entertainment, and we’ve seen Hollywood go from what was clearly the entertainment capital of the world to a city as the crossroads,” commented Primal Fear, Million Dollar Baby and Underworld producer Gary Lucchesi as he opened the debate.
The former Paramount Pictures President of Production and Lakeshore President was joined on stage by ex-hbo Films President Len Amato, who now produces under the banner of Crash&Salvage; The Fisher King and Erin Brockovich producer Stacey Sher; Lori McCreary,...

As fall festival lineups are revealed, the awards race comes into focus. This week saw major announcements from the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, making the rest of the year for Oscar watchers a bit clearer on which movies will be vying for the top awards.
But some mysteries remain. As release dates loom and Telluride remains tight-lipped as usual, a number of presumed Oscar contenders are question marks at the moment.
Here are the questions we're asking as we look ahead at the end-of-the-year film festival line-ups.
Will A House of Dynamite blow up?
The fall release with equal amounts of buzz and mystery surrounding it has to be Kathryn Bigelow's first film in eight years, A House of Dynamite. The movie, which stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, and Greta Lee, was announced by its distributor, Netflix, a little over a month ago with...

Few films embody the term "lightning in a bottle" quite like Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven." This remake of the famous Rat Pack flick of the same name was a surprising pick for Soderbergh's follow up to his blockbuster 2000. Having broken onto the scene with the Palme d'Or winning "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" in 1989, Soderbergh worked his way through the studio system making a series of film's that struggled to recapture the heat of his debut picture.
That all changed in 2000, when Soderbergh didn't just blow up the box office not just once, but twice. First, with the Julia Roberts vehicle "Erin Brockovich," telling the true underdog story of a paralegal with a push up bra taking on the powerful California gas company Pg&e, followed shortly thereafter with "Traffic," a three-pronged story about the illegal drug trade in the United States.
Both films grossed over $250 million worldwide. "Erin Brockovich...

Quentin Tarantino had strong praise for a Hollywood classic that will be getting a new streaming home just in time for its big anniversary. While audiences eagerly await news on Tarantino's final movie, the filmmaker continues to show that he is not shy about sharing his own opinions on movies. Sometimes, this can lead to some controversial takes, including Tarantino criticizing Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest. However, he has also shared plenty of love for movies that truly excite him.
Tarantino has always had an eclectic taste in cinema. He has drawn inspiration from foreign movies and filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, but he has also praised blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and even the Toy Story movies. It is that varied view on cinema that led to him offering his intriguing praise of a classic movie, which he notes may not be the best "film" ever made, but...

Tom Girardi, husband of Real Housewives star Erika Jayne, has been sentenced to prison.
Girardi, 86, is a lawyer based in California, most notable for inspiring the Erin Brockovich story. In August 2024, he was accused of embezzling millions of dollars from his clients.
Now, he has been sentenced to 7 years and 3 months in prison and must pay $2,310,247 in restitution along with a $35,000 fine. The sentencing was handed down in a Los Angeles courthouse by Judge Josephine L. Staton.
Girardi has also been ordered to surrender himself to federal authorities by July 17.
The charges were filed against him after multiple clients came forward, including survivors from a 2010 gas pipeline explosion and victims of a 2018 Lion Air collision.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli spoke out about the sentencing in a press release.
“This self-proclaimed ‘champion of justice’ was nothing more than a thief and a liar who conned his vulnerable clients out of millions of dollars,...

Wonder Project, the production banner behind faith-based film and TV shows such as the Biblical House of David, has partnered with Stand Together Trust to launch a screenwriting fellowship that will give writers the chance to tell true-life stories in the mold of The Blind Side or Erin Brockovich.
Stand Together, the grant-making organization that has ties to hundreds of charities, is underwriting the program. It will pair emerging screenwriters who have distinct points of view and unique lived experiences with the Stand Together community’s national network of nonprofits to tell true stories of human hope and progress. The goal is to generate feature film screenplays that “reflect an intrinsic hope in humanity and bring the spirit of resilience to moviegoers worldwide,” per a statement from the two companies.

There are movies that we remember seeing and shaping our lives from a young age. And for many of us, we can look to one man: Steven Spielberg. Whether it’s E.T. flying past the moon or Indiana Jones being chased by the boulder or the shark popping out of the water in Jaws, Spielberg has created some of the most seminal works in cinema history. Yet, we have wondered if we take him for granted, that we just expect him to churn out memorable images that will shape our and future generations.
Steven Soderbergh recently sat down to chat with Deadline on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Jaws. And while Jaws obviously marked the coming out party for Spielberg, Soderbergh says Spielberg would have hit the scene in a huge way one way or another. “He’s a singular talent…He was unstoppable. Tom Cruise In Mission Impossible 2 Still (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is finally here, bringing the action saga of the past 29 years full circle. The franchise, which—like its eighth and latest installment—was launched on Memorial Day weekend in 1996 to great success, didn’t truly expand on the big screen until its first sequel four years later.
Mission: Impossible 2 Redefined Action & Shattered Franchise Records
Mission: Impossible 2, the sophomore entry, marked the return of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames’ Luther, alongside several new additions and Hans Zimmer as the composer. With director John Woo at the helm, the film elevated its action choreography, which largely overshadowed the original’s spy espionage and complex interpersonal dynamics.
While not a critical hit, the movie proved to be a colossal box office success—and one of the biggest in Cruise’s career when adjusted for inflation.

Toxic Town Has A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score ( Photo Credit – Netflix )
There are just a few shows on Ott that boast a perfect Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of 100%. Today, we will tell you about one such miniseries that quietly started streaming on Netflix a few months back and hit the bullseye with the critics.
Here’s Why You Should Watch This 100%-Rated Netflix Series
We are talking about the British drama miniseries Toxic Town, which was released on the streaming giant Netflix on February 27, 2025. The show is set in a four-episode format, and it’s based on the true story of the Corby toxic waste case. The case is also often described as the British version of Erin Brockovich (which was made into a film starring Julia Roberts). If you like disaster aftermath-centric shows like the widely acclaimed series Chernobyl, then Toxic Town is definitely worth checking out.

When Julia Roberts attended the French Césars this March, Jean-Pascal Zadi was given the task of introducing the Erin Brockovich Oscar-winning actress.
The comic actor and director had Roberts in fits as he drew comparisons between their big toothy smiles and explained she could apply for political asylum if she were feeling the heat back home, suggesting she could get tips from actor Abou Sangaré, who was sitting a few seats behind.
Guinea-born Sangaré, who won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard Best Actor prize in 2024 for his performance as an undocumented migrant in Souleymane’s Story and would be feted with Best Male Revelation that evening, had just escaped deportation from France after securing a work permit in January.
The tone of the humor was typical of Zadi, who four years previously also won Best Male Revelation for Simply Black, his riotously, impolitically correct comedy tackling the experiences of Black people in France.

Patricia Clarkson is an actor who always hits the true note, but it’s been quite a while since she nabbed a movie role as full-scale and invigorating as the one she has in “Lilly.” The movie, which opened yesterday, is a whistleblower drama, based on the life of Lilly Ledbetter, who was the image of a homespun citizen — an Alabama wife and mother working as a supervisor at the local Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plant — when she became an activist almost in spite of herself.
At Goodyear, Ledbetter started out in 1979 slinging tires on the factory floor. She then climbed the managerial ladder, only to keep getting knocked back down. Her work record was top drawer, but she was the only supervisor at the plant who was a woman, and that made a lot of people around her nervous. Near the end of her 20 years there, she learned she...

Julia Roberts is no stranger to playing the girl next door. Since starring in her debut romcom, Mystic Pizza, Roberts had made the role of everyone’s dream gentle girl her own, cementing her legacy with roles in Notting Hill and Pretty Woman.

Albert Finney had an acting legacy including triumphs on stage and television. He was primarily known worldwide for his career, which lasted over half a century, as a film actor, equally adept in lighthearted musicals and complex dramas.
Finney's work has been heralded in all three media. He won London's Olivier Award for "Orphans" on stage, and won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for his performance as Winston Churchill in TV's "The Gathering Storm." But it was in film that Finney was most honored. In 2000, Finney scored a rare double at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for his work in Steven Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," and even though he had little more than a cameo part in Soderbergh's "Traffic" later that year, the role was big enough for him to win a second SAG Award that night as part of the film's ensemble cast.

Andy Serkis has unveiled the voice cast for his animated adaptation of the classic George Orwell allegory “Animal Farm.” It’s a film that Serkis has wanted to direct for over a decade, and it’s finally becoming a reality.
The cast of the film includes Seth Rogen (“The Studio”), Gaten Matarazzo (“Stranger Things”), Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empire”), Glenn Close (“Fatal Attraction”), Laverne Cox (“Orange is the New Black”), Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”), Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), Andy Serkis, Kathleen Turner (“Peggy Sue Got Married”), and Iman Vellani (“Ms. Marvel”).
A classic novella first published in 1945, “Animal Farm” is a satirical political allegory about anthropomorphized animals who rebel against their human farmer owners in the hopes of creating a new society, but the story shows how new challenges can emerge and that revolution is just the beginning. Rogen leads the cast as the cunning pig named Napoleon.

Prolific director Steven Soderbergh (“Black Bag”) has made a career making mid-budget and smaller films, but is now sounding the alarm that the future of those kinds of films might be in serious trouble.
The filmmaker recently spoke with The Independent, where he revealed disappointment and a troubling revelation about the box office results for his latest film, “Black Bag,” as the spy thriller, budgeted at a reported $50 million, only was able to muster $37.7 million worldwide.

Despite standing less than five-feet tall, Danny DeVito is a giant of the entertainment industry. With literally dozens of credits to his name, DeVito has towered over the film and TV worlds through sheer force of his talent for more than half a century, with no signs of slowing down. While he has made his name and earned his fame as an actor, he's also an accomplished director and a prolific producer. Heck, he has credits for screenwriting, editing, and even soundtracks! DeVito's a cinematic "Renaissance Man," and not just because he starred in a 1994 comedy with that name.
Despite DeVito's gargantuan cinematic contributions, this multi-talented, multi-hyphenated filmmaker has never won an Academy Award, and has only been nominated once, for producing "Erin Brockovich." Yet even while watching his buddies Jack Nicholson and Michael Douglas roll in gold, DeVito stays in good spirits, because that's the guy he is. Well,...

For decades, Steven Soderbergh was the king of the hill when it came to the “one for them, one for me” model. We’re talking following up one of the highest-grossing movies of its year, Ocean’s Eleven, with the $2 million Full Frontal, along with balancing the Ocean’s trilogy with indies, classic Hollywood homages and four-plus-hour biopics on Argentine revolutionaries. More than 35 years into his career, Soderbergh has been the champion of mid-budget fare. But when it doesn’t succeed as intended, what’s the reaction?
Speaking with The Independent, Steven Soderbergh said it’s a bit of a disappointment that movies like his most recent, Black Bag — which had a budget around $50-$60 million — don’t have big turnouts at the theatre. “This is the kind of film I made my career on. And if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age...

Academy Award-winning Steven Soderbergh recently reflected on his latest project, the buzzy and well-reviewed espionage thriller Black Bag, lamenting the dissonance between its critical success versus its lackluster draw at the box office.
The prolific filmmaker sat down with The Independent to discuss his disappointment and disillusionment with the waning attendance at theaters, seeing it as a negative harbinger for the entertainment industry.
“This is the kind of film I made my career on,” he began. “And if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age of 25 years old to come out to theaters — if that’s truly a dead zone — then that’s not a good thing for movies. What’s gonna happen to the person behind me who wants to make this kind of film?”

Cate Blanchett announced earlier this week that she is considering stepping away from acting. In a recent interview with Radio Times, the two-time Oscar winner revealed, “My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. [There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
While Blanchett has remained busy with high-profile projects — including Disclaimer for Apple TV+ and Jim Jarmusch’s upcoming film Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, c0starring Adam Driver — she sounded sincere about stepping away from the business. Fame, she admits, has never felt entirely natural.
“When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see sound bites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud. I’m not that person,” she explained. “I make more sense in motion – it’s been a long...

No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story ("Erin Brockovich") and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey ("The Girlfriend Experience").
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie "Behind the Candelabra" (which isn't included on this list of big screen outings). He's also been nominated twice as a director on "The Knick," as a cinematographer on "Behind the Candelabra" and as a producer on "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," "His Way" and "Godless."
Take a tour of our photo gallery of Soderbergh's 11 greatest films, and see if your favorite topped the list.

Steven Soderbergh has done everything, from heist flicks to artsy experiments and everything in between. With a decades-spanning career, this Oscar-winning director has made films that are as wildly diverse as they are memorable. Whether it’s the sleek charm of Ocean’s Eleven or the gritty realness of Traffic, Soderbergh has a knack for keeping us guessing. One minute, he’s giving us big-budget blockbusters; the next, he’s diving headfirst into indie territory with handheld cameras and tiny crews. Who does that? Steven Soderbergh, that’s who.
Ranking the movies of the Swiss Army knife of filmmakers feels almost unfair because each one carries its own unique vibe. From star-studded casts to experimental narratives, there’s always something surprising in his work. Love action-packed thrillers? He’s got you covered. Prefer something slow, cerebral, and artsy? He’s got those, too. And let’s not forget his playful, offbeat...

Julia Roberts was born to play Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman just as Robert Downey Jr. was born to play Tony Stark. The actress got her breakthrough in Hollywood because of the romantic comedy and she became a staple of the genre for a few years before she concentrated on dramatic acting in films like Erin Brockovich and Mona Lisa Smile.
While Pretty Woman is one of the most celebrated rom-coms of all time, it was reportedly a huge task to get it into production. A different tone, a production company that went under, and a director who wanted a different actress all caused significant production delays. Roberts even almost missed out on the role.

To be honest, I am not a huge rom-com guy.

A new spy movie starring Michael Fassbender and Pierce Brosnan has pulled off a box office feat. Fassbender is a versatile actor who is perhaps best known for playing the young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies beginning with 2011's First Class. However, in addition to starring in big-budget genre movies such as the superhero franchise, Assassin's Creed, and Prometheus, he has starred in a variety of dramas such as Shame, A Dangerous Method, Song to Song, Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave, the latter two of which earned him Oscar nominations.
While Pierce Brosnan does not have any Oscar nominations under his belt, he does have ample experience in the spy genre, having starred in four James Bond movies between 1995 and 2002. He played the iconic superspy in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, stepping into the role after the two-movie tenure...

Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment The real-life Erin Brockovich was a local folk hero after winning a nine-figure settlement for the townspeople of Hinkley, California, but her story wasn’t widely known until the movie Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts, was released. That happened 25 years ago, and the film wound up winning Roberts a Best Actress Oscar for her performance. Of course, the movie wouldn’t have done as well as it did had the real-life Brockovich not been such a compelling character herself. When the movie originally opened, Roberts talked to us about how she sought to do justice, so to speak, to her character. Steven Soderbergh has had one of the most enviably cool careers in Hollywood. Since the Atlanta-born director burst onto the scene with Sex, Lies, and Videotape in 1989, he has managed to sustain an indie sensibility in his approach to filmmaking while also attaching huge stars to his projects. In 2011, Soderbergh, along with writer Scott Z. Burns, created the eerily prophetic film Contagion, which stars Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, and Gwyneth Paltrow. In a recent interview with Variety, Soderbergh talked about the status of a possible sequel in the post-Covid spread world and working with Burns again:
"We’ve talked about it. It would have to be about something new, but also something that’s plausible. Part of the reason people were able to find resonance in that movie when it opened, and then 10 years later when the pandemic happened, was it was rooted in reality.

David Henry Hwang was already a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his comedy Yellow Face back in 2007, but the acclaimed play only just landed on Broadway this season courtesy of Roundabout Theater Company. The plot borrows elements from Hwang’s life, namely his infamous protest around the casting of Jonathan Pryce in Miss Saigon, as well as his Broadway flop Face Value. Hwang met with Gold Derby to discuss this 2024 revival and reexamine the ways in which laughter can help guide audiences through sensitive subject matter.

Jack Quaid-led action comedy “Novocaine” will vie with last weekend’s champion “Mickey 17” for the top spot on box office charts.
Based on projections, “Novocaine” should lead the way with $10 million to $12 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. The film, from Paramount Pictures, cost $18 million. In “Novocaine,” Quaid plays an introverted everyman with the inability to feel pain, which he uses to his advantage after his dream girl is taken hostage in a bank robbery.
Those ticket sales should be enough to topple “Mickey 17,” which is expected to decline by 55% to 60% from its $19 million debut, putting second-weekend revenues around $8 million to $9 million. So far, the dystopian sci-fi comedy from Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson has generated $20.5 million domestically and $54 million globally. Those grosses aren’t bad for an original, offbeat film in this theatrical landscape — except that “Mickey 17” cost $118 million...

The charismatic and endearing Aimee Lou Wood is steadily proving herself to be one of Hollywood's most dynamic performers, with the talented actress having first skyrocketed to stardom when she headlined the fan-favorite British teen dramedy Sex Education. Wood has been able to continue showcasing her impressive acting prowess in fellow shows like Alice & Jack and Daddy Issues and movies such as The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, Living, and Seize Them!, and in January 2024 it was announced that she would be joining the star-studded third season of the HBO knockout anthology series The White Lotus.

Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp again deliver greatness with Black Bag, a crisp spy thriller and whodunit that will keep you guessing until the very end. Their second feature of the new year, after the creepy Presence, and third collaboration overall (including 2022's Kimi), boasts an all-star cast in a twisting odyssey of murder, betrayal, and lust. Black Bag skillfully avoids lame genre clichés by keeping the narrative taut and firmly grounded in realism. There are no overblown action scenes, silly gadgets, macho heroics, or slinky femme fatales here.
The opening scene introduces George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a senior British intelligence officer, at a roaring London nightclub. He clandestinely meets Meacham (Gustaf Skarsgård), a colleague assigned with a specific task. Meacham confirms that a top-secret program has indeed been stolen from the government. He hands George a list of five possible suspects with the clearance, aptitude, and opportunity to commit the crime.

Steven Soderbergh’s true story of a paralegal who takes on corporate villains seems a little old-fashioned 25 years on
Re-released 25 years on, this is the true story of David-and-Goliath underdog heroism that was repurposed for the movies by screenwriter Susannah Grant and director Steven Soderbergh. Brockovich is the gutsy working-class woman, played by the Oscar-winning Julia Roberts, who gets a job as a paralegal and senses that local people are getting exploited – so without any professional training becomes the American Boudicca of class-action lawsuits, leading the charge against a Californian utility company that is poisoning the groundwater and causing hundreds of families to get sick. Her affectionate, exasperated boss Ed Masry is played with vigour by Albert Finney; Aaron Eckhart is her on-off boyfriend George, and Brockovich herself has a cameo as a waitress.
Revisited now, Erin Brockovich looks like an old-fashioned Hollywood A-list vehicle. It is essentially a feelgood,...

A set of giant Netflix billboards have been erected in the UK today promoting factual drama Toxic Town, but not everyone walking past will be able to see them.
Netflix is attempting to raise awareness of Britain’s poor air quality problem by making some of the billboards harder to view than others, depending on the air quality levels of the city they are in.
“If the air quality is ‘good’ you will see a full poster for the series. If the air quality is ‘poor’, we are sacrificing our billboards to be covered in a cloud of white smoke,” said a Netflix tweet promoting the billboards earlier today. “Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening,” added Netflix of the nation’s growing issue of poor air quality.

Toxic Town is a new limited series that fictionalizes the true story of one of the biggest environmental scandals to occur in the UK, and the subsequent fight for justice. It’s a narrative centered around several women who could be called unlikely warriors: a tight-knit group of mothers who want answers about what has happened to their children — and why.
The women at the heart of the series — Susan McIntyre (Jodie Whittaker), Tracey Taylor (Aimee Lou Wood), and Maggie Mahon (Claudia Jessie) — are fighting a true David and Goliath-style battle as they seek accountability from the Corby Borough Council. It’s no wonder the story has been called a “British Erin Brockovich,” as both the film and the series present dramatized accounts of real legal battles, and hit on common themes of empowerment and fortitude in the face of corruption.

The Academy Awards over the years have garnered a strange reputation. Every year, without hesitation, fans will turn on their televisions to watch the pompous program, and celebrities will flock to the Dolby Theater to take part in it. Despite the awards banquet remaining a huge deal to virtually everyone, it truly seems like no one is happy with the state of the program. A mountain of complaints have been leveled against the Academy over the years, from "#OscarsSoWhite" to complaints of sexism, to allegations of xenophobia. The most common complaint, however, is far less serious and far more avoidable, and it concerns the "Consolation Oscar."
A consolation Oscar is a term for when an award is given to a legendary actor who is deserving of an Academy Award for their body of work, but isn't quite deserving of the one they received the award for. It is a collective...
