Exclusive: A book about the rise and fall of Barneys is about to become a TV series.

Shiny Penny Productions and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment are developing Gene Pressman’s forthcoming memoir They All Came to Barneys, which comes out September 2 from Viking Books/Penguin Random House. Beth Schacter will write, while Joe Wright (The Agency) will direct the adaptation that will follow the three-generation saga about Pressman’s family’s fashion retail empire.

Shiny Penny’s Stacey Sher and Five All’s Douglas Banker and Alex Garinger will executive produce alongside Noah Levy, Francey Grace, Sophie De Rakoff, Pressman, Schacter and Wright.

Few films embody the term "lightning in a bottle" quite like Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven." This remake of the famous Rat Pack flick of the same name was a surprising pick for Soderbergh's follow up to his blockbuster 2000. Having broken onto the scene with the Palme d'Or winning "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" in 1989, Soderbergh worked his way through the studio system making a series of film's that struggled to recapture the heat of his debut picture.

First, with the Julia Roberts vehicle "Erin Brockovich," telling the true underdog story of a paralegal with a push up bra taking on the powerful California gas company Pg&e, followed shortly thereafter with "Traffic," a three-pronged story about the illegal drug trade in the United States.

New movies from directors Steven Soderbergh and Nia DaCosta have been added to this year’s Toronto Film Festival lineup.

TIFF organizers announced on Thursday the first five titles of its official selection, all of which are set to world premiere in Canada. They are Soderbergh’s “The Christophers,” DaCosta’s “Hedda,” Alejandro Amenábar’s “The Captive,” Sung-hyun Byun’s “Good News” and Chandler Levack’s “Mile End Kicks.”

Soderbergh, the prolific filmmaker of “Ocean’s 11,” “Contagion” and “Erin Brockovich,” was at the last edition of TIFF with his ghost thriller “Presence.” His newest film, “The Christophers,” is described as a black comedy set in the art world and stars Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning, and James Corden.

Tom Girardi, husband of Real Housewives star Erika Jayne, has been sentenced to prison.

Girardi, 86, is a lawyer based in California, most notable for inspiring the Erin Brockovich story. In August 2024, he was accused of embezzling millions of dollars from his clients.

Now, he has been sentenced to 7 years and 3 months in prison and must pay $2,310,247 in restitution along with a $35,000 fine. The sentencing was handed down in a Los Angeles courthouse by Judge Josephine L. Staton.

Girardi has also been ordered to surrender himself to federal authorities by July 17.

The charges were filed against him after multiple clients came forward, including survivors from a 2010 gas pipeline explosion and victims of a 2018 Lion Air collision.

Wonder Project, the production banner behind faith-based film and TV shows such as the Biblical House of David, has partnered with Stand Together Trust to launch a screenwriting fellowship that will give writers the chance to tell true-life stories in the mold of The Blind Side or Erin Brockovich.

Stand Together, the grant-making organization that has ties to hundreds of charities, is underwriting the program. It will pair emerging screenwriters who have distinct points of view and unique lived experiences with the Stand Together community’s national network of nonprofits to tell true stories of human hope and progress. The goal is to generate feature film screenplays that “reflect an intrinsic hope in humanity and bring the spirit of resilience to moviegoers worldwide,” per a statement from the two companies.

The show is set in a four-episode format, and it’s based on the true story of the Corby toxic waste case. There are a lot of movies leaving Netflix in May of 2025, but thankfully, only 1 TV series right now!

The streamer released their list of all the titles that are being expired, and it’s unfortunately lengthy in the month of May.

Some fan favorite romantic movies and rom-coms like Notting Hill, Definitely, Maybe, and Maid in Manhattan are all leaving, along with some Oscar faves like Apollo 13 and Erin Brockovich.

In addition, numerous Spider-Man movies are being taken away as well!

Finally, only 1 TV show will be leaving. That show is all 6 seasons of Madam Secretary, which starred Téa Leoni in the lead role.

Andy Serkis has unveiled the voice cast for his animated adaptation of the classic George Orwell allegory “Animal Farm.” It’s a film that Serkis has wanted to direct for over a decade, and it’s finally becoming a reality.

A classic novella first published in 1945, “Animal Farm” is a satirical political allegory about anthropomorphized animals who rebel against their human farmer owners in the hopes of creating a new society, but the story shows how new challenges can emerge and that revolution is just the beginning. A new spy movie starring Michael Fassbender and Pierce Brosnan has pulled off a box office feat. Fassbender is a versatile actor who is perhaps best known for playing the young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies beginning with 2011's First Class. Steven Soderbergh has had one of the most enviably cool careers in Hollywood. Since the Atlanta-born director burst onto the scene with Sex, Lies, and Videotape in 1989, he has managed to sustain an indie sensibility in his approach to filmmaking while also attaching huge stars to his projects. In 2011, Soderbergh, along with writer Scott Z. Burns, created the eerily prophetic film Contagion, which stars Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, and Gwyneth Paltrow. In a recent interview with Variety, Soderbergh talked about the status of a possible sequel in the post-Covid spread world and working with Burns again:

"We’ve talked about it. It would have to be about something new, but also something that’s plausible. Part of the reason people were able to find resonance in that movie when it opened, and then 10 years later when the pandemic happened, was it was rooted in reality.

David Henry Hwang was already a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his comedy Yellow Face back in 2007, but the acclaimed play only just landed on Broadway this season courtesy of Roundabout Theater Company. The plot borrows elements from Hwang’s life, namely his infamous protest around the casting of Jonathan Pryce in Miss Saigon, as well as his Broadway flop Face Value. Hwang met with Gold Derby to discuss this 2024 revival and reexamine the ways in which laughter can help guide audiences through sensitive subject matter.

Jack Quaid-led action comedy “Novocaine” will vie with last weekend’s champion “Mickey 17” for the top spot on box office charts.

Based on projections, “Novocaine” should lead the way with $10 million to $12 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. The film, from Paramount Pictures, cost $18 million. In “Novocaine,” Quaid plays an introverted everyman with the inability to feel pain, which he uses to his advantage after his dream girl is taken hostage in a bank robbery.

Those ticket sales should be enough to topple “Mickey 17,” which is expected to decline by 55% to 60% from its $19 million debut, putting second-weekend revenues around $8 million to $9 million. So far, the dystopian sci-fi comedy from Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson has generated $20.5 million domestically and $54 million globally. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp again deliver greatness with Black Bag, a crisp spy thriller and whodunit that will keep you guessing until the very end. Their second feature of the new year, after the creepy Presence, and third collaboration overall (including 2022's Kimi), boasts an all-star cast in a twisting odyssey of murder, betrayal, and lust. Black Bag skillfully avoids lame genre clichés by keeping the narrative taut and firmly grounded in realism. There are no overblown action scenes, silly gadgets, macho heroics, or slinky femme fatales here.

The opening scene introduces George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a senior British intelligence officer, at a roaring London nightclub. He clandestinely meets Meacham (Gustaf Skarsgård), a colleague assigned with a specific task. Meacham confirms that a top-secret program has indeed been stolen from the government. He hands George a list of five possible suspects with the clearance, aptitude, and opportunity to commit the crime.

A set of giant Netflix billboards have been erected in the UK today promoting factual drama Toxic Town, but not everyone walking past will be able to see them.

Netflix is attempting to raise awareness of Britain’s poor air quality problem by making some of the billboards harder to view than others, depending on the air quality levels of the city they are in.

“If the air quality is ‘good’ you will see a full poster for the series. If the air quality is ‘poor’, we are sacrificing our billboards to be covered in a cloud of white smoke,” said a Netflix tweet promoting the billboards earlier today. “Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening,” added Netflix of the nation’s growing issue of poor air quality.
