With news of a possible Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot (sequel?) series coming to Hulu in the future, fans of the series are cautiously excited, especially since Sarah Michelle Gellar has expressed interest in reprising her iconic role. But, we are also obviously a little worried that our favorite Chosen One may not be treated in the way we want her to be, right?
The ground-breaking series ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, even changing networks at one point, and fans like yours truly were along for the entire exhilarating ride. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was unique in a number of ways. It was a spinoff of a film with the same title, which was written by Joss Whedon – a film that received lackluster reviews. Whedon himself was very unhappy with the changes that were made to his original script, and was thrilled at the chance to make it what he had originally envisioned.

There are few details about the proposed reboot yet, but it appears Joss Whedon isn’t in the picture.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is frequently found on lists of the best TV shows of the 1990s, and with good reason. The series was a model for other shows of the period, with its season-long story arcs and its strong female lead. Now, a new report from Variety indicates that the show could be nearing a return, with a reboot starring Sarah Michelle Gellar nearing a pilot order at Hulu.
Key Details: Gellar would reprise her role as a recurring character rather than the show’s lead. Original “Buffy” creator Joss Whedon is not expected to have a role in the show’s creative team. A pilot order doesn’t mean the show will get a full season, but it’s an important step in that process. 30-Day Free Trial $9.99+ / month hulu.

On one level, the return of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with Sarah Michelle Gellar — the news of which Variety broke today — is the most 2020s thing that could happen. Updating a beloved TV series from the last four decades with at least some of the original cast has become a central pillar of our current popular culture. From “And Just Like That” on Max to “That ’90s Show” on Netflix to “Star Trek: Picard,” “Frasier” and whatever new version of “Dexter” is streaming on Paramount+, we’re habitually invited now to live in updated versions of our TV pasts.
A new “Buffy,” however, feels more totemic. There are all the TV history reasons, of course: Dismissed when it premiered on the nascent network The WB in 1997 as a mid-season replacement, “Buffy” rapidly roundhouse kicked itself into the vanguard of both television form and content. Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to return to reprise her most iconic role, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, in a new sequel/reboot series.
My fellow Slayers, this is not a drill. Buffy Summers is set to return to our screens and slay some more vampires in the near future.
That’s right, a new series of Buffy The Vampire Slayer is in the works. Deadline reports that Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to return as Buffy Summers, Sunnydale’s loyal vampire slayer, in a new sequel series that’ll also act as a reboot for the iconic 90s horror show.
If that piece of news hasn’t blown your mind yet, here’s another shocker. The series is reportedly being written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and Nomadland director Chloé Zhao is being eyed for directing duties for the pilot. Deadline’s sources also seem to think other old cast...

Two months ago, we reported that Sarah Michelle Gellar was open to reprising her role as the iconic vampire slayer Buffy Summers in a potential Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Well, it looks like that reboot might actually happen, as we just learned that Hulu is close to handing out a pilot order for a follow-up series to the beloved supernatural drama.
And guess what? Gellar is reportedly expected to make a return in the pilot as Buffy. I mean, it wouldn't be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot without the original character coming back! We learned of this good news from Deadline. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who is best known for being behind the drama film Nomadland and the superhero flick Eternals, will helm the pilot from a script written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face).

We have been in need of some good news, and Sarah Michelle Gellar just delivered the most unexpected but necessary batch of good news ever. As reported by Deadline, there's a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in the works at Hulu. Yes, you read that correctly. A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. In the works. In the year 2025. Buffy is back, baby! Well, maybe.
Hulu has yet to officially order a pilot, but the development process has taken great shape as of the announcement to the press. Gellar will reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers, which she played for all seven seasons of The WB/Upn original classic. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Gellar will likely recur as Buffy as she takes a young new slayer under her wing.

Sadly this question with new looks behind curtain of beloved works that have revealed disturbing surprises. It sucks this is the case for a TV series that was part of the television renaissance era

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Charisma Carpenter rejects a revived fan theory, asking for an explanation. Though she'll be known to generations of fans for Cordelia's growth and evolution on the spinoff Angel, it is less appreciated that Cordelia was a part of what's often thought of as Buffy's best era. It's in those first three seasons, those high school years, that Cordelia is positioned alternatively as the frenemy and shadow self of Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Summers.
While responding to comments on TikTok, Carpenter sounded doubtful about a fan's idea that Cordy was a better friend to Buffy than her Scooby Gang, likely meaning Willow, Xander, and Giles. In the quote below, Carpenter refers to the idea as an “unpopular take” and asks commenters to provide evidence of Cordy being a good friend to Buffy. The quote is below:
Oh, this is such an unpopular take. This is gonna cause some controversy.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer guest star Kal Penn reflects on filming one of the worst episodes of the show. Before breaking out in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Penn appeared in his first speaking role in season 4, episode 5 "Beer Bad." Penn is one of many Hollywood stars who guest-starred on Buffy the Vampire Slayer prior to becoming a household name. Despite having a positive experience, Penn acknowledges that the episode he appears in is considered a low point in the series.
Appearing on an episode of Pod Meets World, Penn recalls filming his guest role. The actor is quick to acknowledge that the episode has been poorly received since it aired over two decades ago in 1999 and is often on lists as the worst or one of the worst episodes of the show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a monster-hunting fantasy series that ran from 1997-2003; it's been over a for a long time now, but in an age of constant reboots and revivals, it's surprising that it's never come back in one form or another. "Into every generation a slayer is born," we're told in the intro. It's been over 20 years. Where's the next one?
Well, there actually was a reboot in development at one time, executive produced by original Buffy creator Joss Whedon with Monica Owusu-Breen serving as showrunner. But so far as we can tell, it's dead. Why? Well, it might have something to do with Whedon being excommunicated from Hollywood after allegations of his toxic workplace behavior surfaced, with multiple stars on his shows and movies — among them Justice League star Ray Fisher and Angel star Charisma Carpenter — coming forward. Not every character from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe has the luxury of being as adored as its title character. Xander Harris has been largely considered the worst, while some fans hated Dawn just as much. However, few Buffyverse characters drew as much ire as Angel's Connor, the son of the spinoff's lead.
The comic book continuation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe, particularly the Angel series from Idw Publishing, was a saving grace for Connor. Played by Vincent Kartheiser during the show's last three seasons, the half-demon son of vampires Angel and Darla constantly fought an internal (and external) battle with a father he was trained to hate in a hell dimension.
While Connor's story could've been a compelling arc, it largely amounted to some icky storytelling that even Cordelia's Charisma Carpenter calls problematic. The show never had the opportunity to truly expand on Connor's redemption story,...

An early story on Supernatural for Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) shared many aspects with another storyline within the Buffy The Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel. Many of Supernatural's best episodes focused on the fantastic monsters, lore, and action as well as the unbreakable bond between the Winchester brothers, weaving the two together often to increase the series' emotional and even physical tension. However, the Winchester's individual stories also helped amplify that tension, with Sam's ever-shifting arc shaping many of the early events of the series.
Sam's story in Supernatural often seemed to mirror Dean's (Jensen Ackles), especially as the two brothers were used by Heaven in Hell in the first few seasons of the show. Sam's associations with Hell not only complicated his arc but also allowed the series to naturally increase the stakes as both angelic and demonic forces closed in on the brothers. One particular aspect of that storyline was Sam's prophetic visions,...

Audiences can be very quick to judge TV characters, to the point that their first impression can often turn out to be entirely wrong, with the realization that they were great all along. This can easily happen to characters who oppose the protagonist in some way, as viewers naturally root for the lead and see anyone who is blocking their goals as a threat. However, as the characters' motivations become clearer, everyone soon comes to the realization that they harshly and unfairly judged them.
Many of the best TV characters ever started off unpopular yet managed to redeem themselves throughout the series. In some cases, annoying TV characters managed to become fan favorites as viewers got to know and understand their backstories, motivations, and likable characteristics. We could possibly be seeing another beloved television series get the reboot treatment soon, and this show is one many fans have been hoping to see return in some way. It's the hit supernatural horror series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the show's main star recently announced that she'd be down to reprise her role as the titular character.
During a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Christian Slater and Sarah Michelle Gellar sat down with host Drew Barrymore to discuss their new show, Dexter: Original Sin. At one point during the interview, Barrymore asked Gellar if she'd be open to returning for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Of course, this question got the audience immediately clapping as they awaited her response.
This wasn't the first time that Gellar was asked this question. When she was asked about a Buffy reboot in the past, she pretty much shut down the idea.

The Angel spin-off featured several characters who first appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where their potential was often wasted. Both the Buffy and Angel shows had large casts with memorable characters, and the running themes in both series had attractive young women chasing the monsters rather than vice versa. This new take was extremely popular with audiences then, and Angel took these themes to a darker setting, expanding on the Buffyverse while being a very different show. This tone change gave the characters in Angel the chance to shine in a more serious show.
Buffy was often more comedic than Angel, which was popular among its audience but occasionally led to problems with its character development. When somebody became a "comic relief" character in Buffy, it was difficult for them to break away from that role. Some TV shows have had a lasting legacy, creating characters or worlds so popular that they simply must be explored. A reboot, a spinoff, or a prequel could allow writers to show how a character came to be, explain what happened after the final scene, or explore more of the universe that had been created in the original show. Certain stars are happy to return for more adventures, some smaller parts get expanded, and abandoned storylines can be revisited.
Over a few seasons, quite a lot is bound to happen. Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed teenager Buffy Summers as she trained to become the Vampire Slayer, battling against supernatural threats during the show's seven-season run. Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired from 1997 to 2003 and stands proudly as one of the best-known fantasy television shows of all time. The show focused on Buffy and her friends during their high school years and also featured an array of supernatural allies and foes.
In the show's initial season, Buffy starts her sophomore year at Sunnydale High, having just left Los Angeles following an incident with a group of vampires. Shows with teenage protagonists tend to cast actors who are older than the characters, as filming with underage actors requires them to be tutored, which can slow down the production process. The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer varied in age compared to their characters, with some age differences spanning centuries.

I absolutely loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I only watched the entire thing from start to finish in 2024, and I learned a lot. After years of seeing random episodes out of order and watching clips on social media, I finally sat down and consumed the show in full, and now I understand the hype. Buffy Summers role as the Slayer is intriguing, but as I watched her grow up and embrace her fate, I was excited to start season 1 all over again. Buffy the Vampire Slayers defining moments drew me in, but the underappreciated parts kept me engaged.
Now that Ive seen it, like many other viewers, I hope that the revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will happen. Sarah Michelle Gellar was astounding as the titular character, and I was surprised to find out that there were other actors who almost played Buffy Summers.

Joss Whedon was inevitably one of the most commendable talents in the entire entertainment industry before the series of allegations came crashing down on him in recent years. While accusations from his own ex-wife were one thing, this controversy didn’t stop there as the screenwriter cum director was met with severe claims of mistreatment from the people he worked with as well.

If that wasn’t enough, there were some of his own comments that later left him wishing he had been silent instead. For one, while giving a speech after receiving an award for his tremendous feminism, Whedon once even went as far as calling his mother “sexy.” Of course, this didn’t sit well with anyone, but unfortunately for him, it wasn’t the only mistake people seemed to catch.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was the star of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" but the cult series really was an ensemble show — especially as it went on. The main characters in "Buffy" grew from the titular slayer and her "Scoobies" to an extensive cast of beloved favorites who became just as integral to the show's success and its enduring status as one of the great TV shows of the late-'90s/early aughts.
In that sense, it's not surprising that while Gellar was the lead, there were several other cast members who appeared in almost as many episodes as the star herself. Across seven seasons and 144 episodes, Buffy was joined most frequently by her close friends Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon) — the original Scooby gang. Then, there was her Watcher, Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), Scooby adoptee Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), and "big bad"-turned ally Spike (James Marsters). All these characters,...

If you didn't grow up on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and happened to catch "one of the best horror movies of 2024 in "I Saw the TV Glow," much of Jane Schoenbrun's film might have gone over your head. The film is indebted to "Buffy" in many ways, most obviously with its show-within-a-film "The Pink Opaque," which takes its cues from the beloved WB/CW series. But there's also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from Amber Benson, who for three seasons of "Buffy" played witch Tara Maclay.
Alongside co-star Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg, Benson would depict one of TV's first serious relationships between two women. "Buffy" never treated Willow and Tara's love as anything other than serious and meaningful, and steered well clear of using it as some sort of punchline or curio. As such, Benson has become a beloved figure of LGBTQ empowerment ever since. This is partly...

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was defined by Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, making it hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Cordelia Chase played by Charisma Carpenter and Harmony by Mercedes McNab were crucial supporting characters. Katie Holmes and Natasha Lyonne were also considered for the role, showcasing the potential alternate paths for the series.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer was defined by the central role of Buffy, the protagonist and titular vampire slayer who audiences couldn't get enough of. For seven seasons, Sarah Michelle Gellar played Buffy, and it's almost impossible to envision another actress taking on the role. While recasting Buffy for a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot is a fun exercise, it's unlikely that a new series would retread ground from the original series, as those episodes and seasons are iconic. However, things could have looked very different for the TV show if a different actor had been cast as Buffy.

Long-running TV shows like Buffy, Lost, and Modern Family keep audiences engaged for hours on end with a mix of chaos, comedy, and adventure. The best binge-worthy series like Supernatural and Parks & Rec have strong plots and lovable characters that make viewers feel at home with every watch. Familiar favorites like The Office and Friends offer a comforting experience with memorable characters and timeless humor that stand the test of time.
There's nothing quite like a long and binge-worthy TV show. With so many episodes, it's great to return to the same characters and journey through the chaos, comedy, and adventure of years worth of content. This has only increased in the age of streaming since it's now possible to hit play and enjoy hours on end of series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Modern Family, Friends, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Outdated TV tropes like "bury your gays" impacted popular shows like Buffy, hurting LGBTQ+ representation and character development. Antihero characters in shows like The Sopranos led to a trend of flawed protagonist copycats, with leads lacking moral compasses. TV shows often depicted foreign characters stereotypically for comic relief, relying on outdated humor for laughs.

While TV show tropes have always been a common occurrence, some have aged rather badly. In past decades, TV shows have implemented several tropes and stereotypes about their characters, settings, and even episode formats. However, while many were timeless, some TV tropes became so painfully out-of-date. Even the best TV shows of all time were guilty at one point or another of using poorly aged tropes.

Angel's exit marked a turning point for Buffy, leading to a spin-off series and viewer shifts. Riley as a love interest divided viewers due to his bland character compared to Angel. The Initiative storyline in Season 4 almost ruined the show for many, leading to viewer drop-off.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the most beloved television series ever, but several moments made some viewers stop watching altogether. As a powerful feminist story about the teenage vampire slayer Buffy Summers and her battles against vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness, Buffy was a groundbreaking television series for its depiction of strong female characters, LGBTQ+ themes, and incredible worldbuilding. However, other moments werent as well received, and certain aspects led audiences to stop following the adventures of the Scooby Gang.

What do we want from a spinoff? More time with a favorite supporting character, as with Frasier or Better Call Saul? An expansion of a compelling mythos, as with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or House of the Dragon? Or perhaps a deeper exploration of some potent themes, as with Rugrats offshoot All Grown Up?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel fulfilled all of those criteria and more.
Premiering in 1999, with its first four seasons running concurrently with Buffy, Angel’s eponymous hero was a reformed vampire, the ex-lover of his parent show’s titular Slayer. The spinoff imported several other characters from Buffy, transplanting them from the small town milieu of Sunnydale to the sinister sprawl of Los Angeles, a darker, more complex setting where demons and vampires rubbed shoulders with high powered lawyers and politicians. It occupied an interesting position in the cultural landscape, airing alongside shows like...

One of my favorite "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" characters is Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield), the Vengeance Demon turned human. She's introduced as the villain of the season 3 episode "The Wish," in which Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) wishes for a world where Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) never came to Sunnydale. When Anya makes Cordelia's wish come true, vampires end up ruling the town in the Slayer's absence.
Restoring the proper timeline robbed Anya of her powers; she's stuck as just another teenager attending Sunnydale High (and flunking math). Initially resentful of her new life, she eventually falls for Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and by season 4, she's part of the Scooby gang, sharing duties with her boyfriend as the show's comic relief.
Anya is hilarious; much of the humor in "Buffy" is sardonic, but she's oblivious. Having spent centuries as a vengeance demon, modern socialization skills escape her. Anya can be just as cutting or rude as the others,...

No one can play Buffy Summers, the girl chosen by fate to be a vampire Slayer, better than Sarah Michelle Gellar. She's not the only one who's tried though.
For starters, Gellar is actually the sophomore Slayer — Buffy was first played by Kristy Swanson in the original "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie from 1992 (that's been soundly displaced by the TV series in pop culture). For the TV series, Charisma Carpenter originally auditioned for Buffy, but ultimately played Queen Bee Cordelia Chase instead, the part that Gellar turned down. The whole point of Cordelia is that she's what Buffy was before she became the Slayer (an acerbic popular girl), so casting Gellar and Carpenter made sense. In another world, they could pull off each others' parts.
Carpenter wasn't the only runner-up to play Miss Summers. Back in 2001, when "Buffy" was still ongoing and sensation, Natasha Lyonne appeared on "The Howard Stern Show...

Some TV characters destroy their own reputation with one unforgivable crime, no matter how beloved they were before. Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer sexually assaulted Buffy and his reputation plummeted. Rachel Berry in Glee sends another talented singer to a crack house out of jealousy, showing her unethical behavior and blurring the lines of morality. Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones undergoes a drastic personality shift and becomes the Mad Queen, damaging her character and the overall storyline.
Warning: This article contains mentions of sexual assault, death, and violence.

Killing off a major character can be a turning point for a series and allow for the development of other characters. The way a character dies is just as important as when, as it should serve a narrative purpose and not feel forced or unnecessary. Bringing back a character after seemingly killing them off can undermine the impact of their death and suggest a lack of creative ideas.
Moving forward after the death of a main character can be a struggle for television shows, but if the show is too careful not to kill off a character, or does it at the wrong time, it can be just as ruinous to the series. The death of a major character can be an exciting turning point for a series, as it presents the opportunity for a tone shift and the development of the other characters in the show. "The Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon may be long banished from the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, but his influence remains seeped into the whole enterprise. The screwball, genre-aware dialogue Whedon writes is now the McU's house style — if not a hindrance. Other writers have been aping it to diminishing returns ever since.
The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Gavin Edwards, Dave Gonzales, and Joanna Robinson details how Marvel Studios first hired Whedon. His gain was another writer's loss; Zak Penn had already written a script for "The Avengers," but Whedon threw his version out and started from scratch. "There was a script. There just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of," Whedon said. This move is an early harbinger of how Whedon would make his style into Marvel's own.
As "MCU" notes, this wasn't the first time this had happened to Penn.

It's safe to say the early aughts WB series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was a smash hit — among other accolades, it produced a five-season spin-off, "Angel," and launched several storied careers, including that of its controversial creator, Joss Whedon. A few of the "Buffy" characters returned in "Angel" after departing from "Buffy," including the British Watcher Wesley and Sunnydale High's resident mean girl Cordelia. Even Spike, who was killed off in the "Buffy" series finale, returned for the final season of the spin-off. However, not all of the cast members were so keen on reprising their roles after the original series ended.

In the years since it wrapped up, loving "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has become complicated. Specifically, the legacy of the seminal '90s series has been somewhat tarnished after multiple allegations against creator and showrunner Joss Whedon surfaced. Not only did several members of the "Buffy" crew accuse Whedon of fostering a toxic set, but numerous other colleagues and even his ex-wife came out to claim that he had acted unprofessionally at best, and abusive at worst.
The most vocal of all the "Buffy" cast was Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia on the show and later its spin-off "Angel." Carpenter alleged that Whedon was "cruel" to her and others on-set and that his behavior caused her to suffer from a "chronic physical condition." Thankfully, the "Buffy" sequel series — an audio show called "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story" — finally brings some justice for Carpenter. But she wasn't the only one who struggled behind the scenes of "Buffy.

Not every show gets a satisfying conclusion, but the most important part is if each season concludes the narrative arc. Season 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 30 Rock, Grey's Anatomy, Sex and the City, and Game of Thrones are particularly standout seasons with strong storylines and character development.

It's hard to imagine the smash-hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" without Sarah Michelle Gellar as the titular lead. But believe it or not, the actor was almost cast in a totally different role in the series. Thankfully, she held out for the brave-hearted protagonist, but it almost cost her both roles on the show. She ended up scoring the part she wanted in the end, but she was up against some stiff competition -- including the actor who ended up playing Cordelia!
When the "Cruel Intentions" star first got the call to audition for "Buffy," she had just wrapped a movie in Australia and was excited to stay in the country for Carnival, she revealed in a 2002 interview.

Giles's understanding of Buffy's youthful and obstinate attitude is what allows her to trust him and for their relationship to help her develop her demon-hunting abilities in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
