We’ve all witnessed inconsistencies on our favorite TV shows, something out of the ordinary that just doesn’t match what we knew about them before. We’re talking betrayals to the character and, really, the audience’s commitment. But David Duchovny wouldn’t stand for anything like this when making The X-Files, calling out the showrunners any time he felt they weren’t being true to Moulder.
On his Fail Better podcast (via EW), David Duchovny noted that such inconsistencies are a true problem, saying, “It was a bit of a pet peeve of mine when I was doing X-Files — not so much the other shows that I’ve done — but, as with Bones, it’s episodic, but every episode is pretty high drama. It can be life and death.”
Despite The X-Files relying on sci-fi and the supernatural, David Duchovny knew that was no excuse to not stick to basic logic.

The X-Files star David Duchovny needed to call out a massive Mulder plot hole in The X-Files season 1. The mystery series, created by Chris Carter, has developed a loyal following since debuting. Originally airing for nine seasons and releasing multiple feature films, The X-Files was revived from 2016 to 2018.
The show is centered on FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who investigate various supernatural phenomena and investigations. Along with Duchovny and Anderson, The X-Files cast includes Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Tom Braidwood, and more.
During an episode of Fail Betterwith David Duchovny (via Entertainment Weekly), the actor discussed one plot hole he had to call out on The X-Files. There is a season 1 episode where Mulder admits to being afraid of fire. However, Duchovny recalled that Mulder experienced a large fire earlier in the show, and realized that it might not make sense for his character. Check out his...

The X-Filesstar David Duchovny explains what piece of lore he called out creator Chris Carter over.
Per TVInsider, Duchovny opened up about calling Chris Carter out on the set of The X-Files early on when what seemed like a key continuity error became a main plot point. Duchovny discussed the episode "Fire," which dealt heavily with his Agent Mulder's crippling fear of fire, which hadn't been an issue in previous episodes. "I remember, like, in the middle of the episode, I had this thought," Duchovny said. "I think I went up to Chris Carter, who wrote that episode, I believe, and I said, 'Didn't Mulder and Scully [Gillian Anderson] watch a building burn down in the pilot? And I think Mulder was fairly cool with it. You know, it didn't bother him.'"
Duchovny went on to discuss his personal "pet peeve" of inexperienced The X-Files writers having inaccurate takes on his character.

David Duchovny said he was the “curator” of FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, his character on the hit sci-fi series The X-Files, and he even had to tell creator Chris Carter about a continuity error on the Fox drama. In a new episode of his Fail Better podcast, Duchovny and Bones star Emily Deschanel discussed how they sometimes knew their characters better than the writers of the shows. And Duchovny related an anecdote from filming “Fire,” a first-season X-Files episode in which Mulder confronts a debilitating fear of fire while pursuing a serial arsonist. “I remember, like, in the middle of the episode, I had this thought,” the actor said. “I think I went up to Chris Carter — who wrote that episode, I believe — and I said, ‘Didn’t Mulder and Scully [Gillian Anderson] watch a building burn down in the pilot? Actress Emily Deschanel was a guest on the podcast episode. During the episode, David talked about how The X-Files compares to Emily‘s show Bones in that both shows have a high amount of drama per episode.
“Sometimes the directors would come on and they’d know they had a great script and [since] this was on The X-Files, this could happen, you know? Like, ‘Holy s—, this is a great script,’ and they really wanted to kill it.

"This Is Not True": Stardew Valley Fans Resurrect ConcernedApe's Debunking Of A Common Misconception
An old misconception about Stardew Valleyhas resurfaced, only to be debunked with some help from creator ConcernedApe himself. While there's a lot to discover in Stardew Valley, from obscure secret events to game-changing glitches, every so often, a fan hears a rumor that just isn't true. Stardew is opaque by design. Its tutorial explains only the broadest details of gameplay, then leaves you to experiment with the rest of the system to figure out how everything works. That can lead to incredible moments of discovery, but sometimes, those discoveries just don't hold water.

When you think about The X-Files, a few things instantly come to mind. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s paranormal-investigating FBI agents shining their flashlights into a void. The glow of the Cigarette Smoking Man’s cancer stick. The “I Want to Believe” UFO poster. “The Truth Is Out There” tagline. And the theme music.
Composed by the prolific Mark Snow, the theme was first played in the second episode and would gone to appear in all subsequent episodes of the original series, the two feature films, and the 2016-18 revival.

Fresh off the news that ’90s tough-guy actor Michael Madsen has passed away comes word that another major figure from the decade’s pop culture has also died. Mark Snow, the composer behind The X-Files’ iconic theme music, has passed away at the age of 78.
Of the thousands of TV theme songs out there, few are as instantly recognizable as Snow’s haunting composition for Chris Carter’s groundbreaking supernatural series. The theme became an indelible part of the show’s identity, running throughout its original 1993–2002 run, as well as in both feature film spin-offs—which Snow also scored—and the revival series from 2016–2018. In the ’90s, the eerie whistling melody was everywhere—it even became a chart hit in the UK.

Fortniteand developer Epic Games are paying out a huge refund of over $126 million this week as the result of a previous settlement agreement, and you might be entitled to part of it. Back in December 2022, Epic Games was sued by the Federal Trade Commission for two different issues: allegedly violating children's privacy laws and allegedly knowingly tricking users into making unwanted monetary charges to bank accounts and credit cards with deceptive practices. Now, the FTC is sending out more refunds as part of the settlement.
As reported by CBS News, the FTC has reopened claims submissions and has said it will send nearly 970,000 money checks and PayPal payments to consumers who file a valid refund claim. The FTC began sending refunds yesterday and will send more today. In December 2024, the first round of payments was made to eligible customers and was estimated to be around $22 million, according to the agency.

The X-Files is celebrating its 32nd anniversary in 2025, having originally premiered on Sept. 10, 1993.
Over the past three decades, Fox's Emmy-winning sci-fi series has remained relevant thanks to its initial nine-season run from 1993 to 2002, two big-screen movies in 1998 and 2008, two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, and an in-progress diverse reboot from filmmaker Ryan Coogler. Not to mention, series stars David Duchovny (as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully) make headlines every time they talk about their sometimes-rocky relationship behind the scenes.
All told, a whopping 218 episodes were produced for television — think of all those discarded cigarette butts! In Gold Derby's photo gallery below, we rank the 32 best episodes in honor of the 32nd anniversary. Do you agree with our No. 1 choice?

Tuesday on David Duchovny's Fail Better podcast, the actor reunited with The X-Files creator Chris Carter to rehash the good times and also the "difficult times" during their time working on the Emmy-winning sci-fi hit about FBI agents Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) investigating unexplained phenomenon. The program aired on Fox from 1993 to 2002, with two feature films in 1998 and 2008, and a two-season revival in 2016 and 2018.
Duchovny began by saying that it's "obvious history" that his "entire career was made possible by The X-Files." The actor then delved into the troubles behind the scenes when he left after Season 7. (Mulder appeared in half of Season 8 and in the original series finale in Season 9).
"Something lost in the times that we've done a reboot of the show, twice now, and even the second movie, goes back to me leaving the show," Duchovny declared. "We don't have to, like,...

How Bryan Cranston’s The X Files Role Connects To Breaking Bad! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Before Walter White ever cooked in an Rv, he was in the passenger seat of a speeding car, screaming for his life, and Bryan Cranston made sure we couldn’t look away! I’ve always believed Walter White didn’t start in Breaking Bad’s pilot. He started in The X-Files. Specifically, Season 6, Episode 2 — Drive. That’s where Cranston first became the man you were scared of, but couldn’t stop rooting for, albeit in the form of Patrick Crump.
That episode didn’t just showcase his range; it convinced Vince Gilligan that Cranston could carry a series built entirely on moral gray zones. The man was hateful, unhinged, spewing bile from the backseat—and yet, by the end, he broke your heart. And Gilligan remembered.
It wasn’t just another X-Files one-off. Back then,...

Back in March of 2023, /Film reported that Ryan Coogler, most recently the director of the hit vampire musical "Sinners," and Chris Carter, the creator of the seminal 1990s conspiracy thriller series "The X-Files," were collaborating on a 2020s update of Carter's series. It was unclear at the time if Coogler's "The X-Files" was going to share a continuity with the original show or if it was going to be a hard reboot with an all-new cast and a newly restarted continuity. The only word they used was "remounting," which could have meant anything.
More recently, on an episode of "The Last Podcast on the Left," Coogler expanded on his ideas a little bit, saying that the project was still very much alive. He had been busy finishing the blockbuster "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," and then moved on to "Sinners," and he was relieved to have a blank slate where...

The truth is out there, and Gillian Anderson is ready to find it again, but only with the right person at the helm. The X-Files icon, who brought the skeptical yet soulful Dana Scully to life, recently dropped a bombshell about the upcoming reboot of the beloved sci-fi series.
Speaking on ITV1’s This Morning, Anderson revealed she has had talks with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, calling him the “perfect person” to revive the show. After years of saying no to revisiting Scully, Anderson’s excitement for Coogler’s vision could give a new life to The X-Files reboot.

Gillian Anderson is teasing whether she would return for Ryan Coogler’s planned X-Files reboot.
The actress who played Agent Dana Scully in the original series recently shared during an appearance on ITV1’s This Morning that she spoke to the Sinners filmmaker.
“I spoke to [Coogler], and what I said was, ‘If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person, and best of luck,'” Anderson said, adding that she told Coogler, “Call me.”
As to whether The Salt Path actress would genuinely consider returning for the reboot, Anderson kept her response vague, saying, “At some point, if the phone rings and it’s good and it feels like the right time, perhaps.”

Much like the Cigarette-Smoking Man, The X-Files just won't die.
The Emmy-winning sci-fi hit about FBI agents who investigate unexplained phenomenon originally aired on Fox from 1993 to 2002, with two feature films in 1998 and 2008. The network later revived The X-Files for two more seasons in 2016 and 2018, bringing its tally to 218 total episodes. In 2023, creator Chris Carter shocked the fandom when he claimed Ryan Coogler was planning to "remount" the show "with a diverse cast," but 20th Century Fox Television wouldn't confirm or deny. Then in 2025, while promoting his red-hot vampire flick Sinners, Coogler admitted that the rumors were true and weren't, to borrow a term from the series, humbug.
Read on for everything to know about The X-Files reboot.

Two years ago, The X-Files creator Chris Carter spilled the beans during an interview on the show On the Coast, revealing that a reboot of The X-Files was in the works, with Ryan Coogler at the helm. A couple of weeks ago, Coogler confirmed to Last Podcast on the Left, “I’m working on X-Files. That’s what’s immediately next… I’ve been excited about that one for a long time and I’m fired up to get back to it, and that, you know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary.” Coogler also said that he has spoken with Gillian Anderson, who starred in the original series as Agent Dana Scully, about the project. “She’s incredible, and fingers-crossed there. “Sinners” director Ryan Coogler is currently at the top of Hollywood off the success of his IMAX-shot vampire epic, which has so far grossed more than $168 million worldwide.
But the “Creed” and “Black Panther” franchise filmmaker has said that his next project will indeed be returning to another piece of I.P., a long-rumored revival of “The X-Files,” the beloved Emmy-winning Fox series about FBI agents investigating the U.S. government’s collaboration with extraterrestrials.
Gillian Anderson, who played FBI agent Dana Scully in the series that wrapped on Fox in 2002 but returned for two subsequent seasons in 2016 and 2018, has now revealed she’s open to appearing in another version. Especially with Coogler — the “perfect person” to remake it, as she says — at the helm.
Anderson said during ITV1’s “This Morning” in the below clip that she contacted “Sinners” filmmaker Coogler after it was rumored in 2023 he would be reviving the series.

Now that Sinners is playing in theaters (and performing exceptionally well), filmmaker Ryan Coogler is pvioting to a different project: a reboot of the long-running and hit sci-fi series The X-Files. Well, recently, Dana Scully herself, Gillian Anderson, chimed in on Coogler's idea for a revival and she's very supportive of the Sinners director taking charge.
During a recent appearance on This Morning, via Digital Spy, the actress said she spoke with Coogler and gave him her blessing.
"What I said was, 'If anyone were to do it, I think you would be the perfect person,'" Anderson revealed to This Morning hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley. She also told Coogler he could call her and wished him luck with the project.

When it comes to The X-Files, one of the first things that comes to mind is the unforgettable chemistry between FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Their dynamic, with a blend of intellectual tension, emotional depth, and unspoken attraction, became one of the show’s defining features.
But according to the creator of the series, Chris Carter, that iconic spark wasn’t always obvious. In fact, early feedback on the show questioned whether there was any romantic energy at all.

It cannot be understated how huge "Baywatch" was. It was a goofy show with lightweight drama, resting somewhere on a matrix that incorporated soap operas, "Gilligan's Island"-like sitcoms, and 1970s "jiggle" shows like "Charlie's Angels." The central appeal of "Baywatch" was, of course, witnessing attractive people in swimsuits running dramatically down the beaches of Los Angeles. David Hasselhoff's star stayed high in the sky thanks to "Baywatch," and many of his co-stars -- notably Pamela Anderson -- became world-famous.
"Baywatch" debuted in 1989 and ran a powerful 241 episodes over 11 seasons, finally drawing to a close in 2001. The final two seasons were relocated to Hawai'i, and the title of the show was changed to "Baywatch: Hawaii," even though it retained the same cast and premise.
Weirdly, as soon as "Baywatch" ended, its cultural clout dried up. "Baywatch" was almost instantly seen as a curio of the 1990s, and 2000s audiences...

When the general public looks back on The X-Files, they picture a dark and serious 1990s show about aliens and government conspiracies. But die-hard fans know that some of the series’ best episodes were a laugh riot.
The show began to churn out a few episodes per season with a comic bent, beginning with the circus freaks episode “Humbug” in Season Two. And “Humbug” writer Darin Morgan, who also wrote a few funny episodes in Season Three, is generally credited with the comedic relief of the early seasons. Morgan, however, only wrote for the show for two seasons (although he returned in 2016 when the show was briefly revived). The writer responsible for the later funny episodes was Vince Gilligan.
Gilligan’s first largely comedic episode was “Small Potatoes,” a caper in which a pathetic man with a tail named Eddie Van Blundht impregnates several women in town by morphing into exact duplicates of their husbands.

To be a fan of The X-Filesmeans accepting the most difficult truth:the universe created by Chris Carter often suffered from incomplete, unsatisfying or downright confusing endings. Even with more than its share of flawless episodesthe show was neither perfect nor beyond critique.
Many great storylines in The X-Files went nowhere, either forgotten by storytellers or used so often that the "answers" are more confusing than the original question. Truth is a matter of perspective in this saga, but there are, arguably, examples of how, even when the show missed the target, it still captured fans' imaginations.
The Mysterious Men in Black and Their Relationship to Alex Trebek Were They Real, Part of 'Majestic 12' or Did Viewers Just See the Planet Venus?
As serious as the show could be, some of its best stories were the funniest The X-Files episodes. "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" is one such instance, and...

David E. Kelley's unusual primetime drama "Picket Fences" debuted on CBS in 1992, and it was, like a lot of media of the 1990s, an aggressive takedown of the previous generation's tropes. The title, "Picket Fences," was meant to evoke the placid serenity of the post-War Baby Boom, describing a common yard feature in the then-new 1950s suburbs. The series, however, took place in Rome, Wisconsin, a place that was anything but placid. The stories surrounded bleak and sometimes unexplained crimes, and the show regularly tackled sensitive and political topics like abortion, sexual assault, polyamory, and the place of faith in the modern world.
"Picket Fences," with its soapy stories and unusual tone, was clearly a knockoff of (or merely following the trends started by) David Lynch's 1990 series "Twin Peaks." That show also aimed to deconstruct placid 1950s media images with dark violence and surreal mysteries.

The X-Files is a mystery in its own right because not only did it manage to pioneer a new sub-genre of sci-fi in the early '90s, but it also managed to collect an abundance of new fans every day. The show centers around Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, two FBI agents who spend their days uncovering the dark underbelly of the supernatural and strive to bring it to light. Thus, it's easy to say that this show has everything: monsters, aliens, and a ferocious slow-burn romance plot.
Even when the show returned in 2016 for two limited seasons, fans were impressed with how easily David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were able to slip into their roles again. As such, fans, new and old, often rave about their favorite episodes and discuss why The X-Files had such a big impact on popular culture. However, audiences would be lying if they said...

The release of The Monkey marks a continuation of Stephen King's long and weird film career. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film reaches far back into King's past for material, now joining the ranks of other King adaptations like Carrie, The Running Man, and The Shining. However, as it turns out, Perkins isn't the first to bring this supposedly untouched short story to life. Kudos to you X-File fanatics who recall the episode “Chinga” in 1998, which used this same plot.
As part of a special series in Season 5, creator Chris Carter recruited some ringers to guest write. The result was an unofficial adaptation of King’s 1980 short story, “The Monkey,” swapping out the cymbal-clutching monkey for a creepy, haunted, Victorian Doll. Perhaps for legal reasons, the story was modified, concealing the origins. But enough of the core elements remain to trace the provenance of "Chinga." That short story is...

Anyone flinging pencils at the ceiling while keeping one eye on the SAG Awards on Sunday night would no doubt have bolted upright at the sight of The X-Filesco-stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who gave fans an unexpected reunion when they appeared onstage at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles to present an award together.
As reported by The Mirror, the actors presented the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Drama Series, which went to FX's Shōgun, but not before the pair exchanged some back-and-forth banter, reminiscent of their days as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on The X-Files. Duchovny kicked proceedings off by introducing the award with a quick quip: "'Ensemble,' I believe that's a French word that means: 'Thank God I only have to work three days a week.'"

This reunion was ... out there.
On Sunday, The X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunited at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards. And they nearly ruined their moment in the spotlight when they opened up the winner's envelope for the Best Drama Ensemble category before ever announcing the nominees.
"Ensemble," Duchovny began after stepping out on stage. "I think that's a French word that means, 'Thank God I only have to work three days a week.' It's great to see you, Gillian. You look ..."
Anderson finished his sentence: "Younger than you last saw me when we shot 218 episodes?"
Duchovny and Anderson talked about "what makes great drama," and then answered at different times, "Timing" and "Chemistry," respectively.
When the audience only gave them a mild chuckle, Anderson shouted, "We still got it! Hilarious! We did that so well."
And Duchovny added, "Let's get out of here as soon as we can.
