‘I Am Beyond Vomit’: Tom Segura’s Mom Told Him That His New Show Is ‘An Insult to Humanity’ On Camera
Image
Stand-up and podcasting star Tom Segura’s new dark comedy series Bad Thoughts will premiere on Netflix tomorrow, May 13th, just 48 hours after he used it to ruin Mother’s Day.

Segura’s relationship with (and impression of) his mother, Rosario “Charo” Lazarte, is one of the foundational elements of his indulgently offensive brand of comedy. From torturing her with morbid hypotheticals to “treating” her to a macrodose of marijuana edibles, Segura’s playfully mean-spirited sense of humor has always found a target in his poor mother, and on the eve of the Your Mom’s House host taking a big next step in his comedy career, Segura shared in the “joy” of his first self-starred TV series by subjecting his dear mom to a dose of disgusting comedy that she found less digestible than four gummies.

To celebrate and promote tomorrow’s premiere of Bad Thoughts, Netflix helped Segura to...

Tom Segura’s Mom Roasts His Netflix Comedy ‘Bad Thoughts’: ‘It’s an Insult to Humanity’ (Exclusive)
Image
Netflix has gifted fans a truly unhinged Mother’s Day treat: Tom Segura’s Peruvian mom Charo, absolutely eviscerating his new sketch comedy series, “Bad Thoughts.”

In a riotous promo released to Variety exclusively, the “Your Mom’s House” comedian invites his actual mother to a private screening — equipped with a reaction device to track her feedback. What follows is pure comedy gold.In the video, Segura gently instructs his mother to use a three-button device: a plus sign for approval, a thumbs down for disapproval, and a red button if something is so offensive she’d turn it off completely. By the end of the screening, she’s ready to disown him.

“No, Tommy. That’s not funny. This is so disgusting. I am beyond vomit,” she says, wincing as one sketch dives into jaw-dropping inappropriate territory. And that’s just the start.

“You can be a good comedian without being that disgusting,...

CBS Cancels New Sitcom With 86% Rt Score After 1 Season
Image
CBS has decided which shows will not return for another season. Despite positive reviews, Poppa's House was canceled before its first season aired in full.

Per Deadline, CBS axed not just one, but two shows: Poppa's House and The Summit. The sitcom that comes from Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr. premiered in October 2024 to positive reviews. However, that wasn't enough to keep it on the air. With a season finale set for release later this month, Poppa's House will end after 18 episodes.

Poppa's House was created by Wayans Sr. and Kevin Hench. The series starred Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr. as a father and son duo. Essence Atkins and Tetona Jackson also had main roles Dr. Ivy Reed, Poppa's new co-host, and Nina, respectively. It followed legendary radio host and happily divorced Poppa, who struggles when a new female co-host is hired, all while dealing with parenting his adult son.

Bruce Vilanch on the Worst TV Moments in History, from the Wookiee Christmas ‘Star Wars’ Special to a ‘Brady Bunch’ Blowout
Image
Since getting his big break crafting jokes for Bette Midler in the early 1970s, Emmy-winning comedy writer and personality Bruce Vilanch has found success writing for the small screen and stage. But by his own admission, the scribe behind 25 Academy Award ceremonies and more than his fair share of Miss Universe and USA pageants has also penned some real flops.

In his new book, “It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time: The Worst TV Shows in History and Other Things I Wrote,” Vilanch walks readers through some of the most ill-conceived projects he’s been attached to over the years — from 1978’s “The Star Wars Holiday Special” to the now infamous 1989 Oscars ceremony that opened with Rob Lowe and Snow White pirouetting to “Proud Mary.”

“‘It was a terrible idea, and I shouldn’t have gotten involved’ didn’t even occur to us at the time,” Vilanch told IndieWire on a Zoom call,...

When Guest Stars Were Actually Exciting: The Magic of Seeing Your Favorite Actors Pop Up on Classic TV
Image
There was a time when TV guest stars were pure magic, popping up like hidden gems in your favorite shows.

Long before social media spoiled every surprise, guest appearances felt like little events that brought something extra to our screens.

You’d be watching a familiar show, and out of nowhere, a face you knew and loved would walk on, adding an unexpected thrill to the episode.

Mark Harmon on The Love Boat (ABC/Screenshot)

These weren’t ratings gimmicks or social media stunts; they were genuine surprises that made TV feel alive and unpredictable.

For me, The Love Boat and Fantasy Island were cozy weekend rituals, especially when I watched with my grandma.

It wasn’t about knowing every guest star — it was about the fun of seeing who would pop up next, making each episode feel like a surprise package.

You’d sit down, and suddenly there was...

‘The Love Boat’: 33 Oscar-Winning Guest Stars
Image
Has any entertainment scripted project ever featured more Oscar winners? Tour our special Valentine’s Day photo gallery to see which 33 Academy Awards champs made appearances on the very popular Aaron Spelling show “The Love Boat.”

For one full decade of 1977 to 1987, ABC could count on its comedy/drama series “The Love Boat” to bring in millions of audience members on Saturday nights. The show would have multiple story arcs (often three for a one-hour episode) with five to 10 celebrity guest stars each time. Some arcs were playing out for laughs, others for romance and the remainder could take on tough issues. The show airs daily on the Decades network and on Sunday afternoons for Me-tv. You can also stream every episode on Paramount+.

Regular cast members would either take command of some segments or be in the backseat on others. The charming actors throughout the decade were Gavin MacLeod...

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 16 episode 6 recap: ‘Welcome to the DollHouse’
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 9 with the sixth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode five, Amanda Tori Meating wowed her peers and the judges with her dancing skills in the “Girl Groups” challenge, but a miss on concept on the runway landed her in the bottom two anyway. In a Lip Sync for Your Life to new-to-the-bottom Q, Amanda lost out and became the third queen to leave the competition.

This week, the remaining 11 queens return to the sewing machine for what Ru refers to as a “design, branding and storytelling” challenge to create a customized doll version of themselves. Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 6 titled “Welcome to the DollHouse” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Ts Madison, and legendary stylist Law Roach as the extra special guest.

The queens still...

‘Highly Trans, Highly Goddess’: Sasha Colby on Her Historic ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Win

The second Sasha Colby was cast on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15, she was already a frontrunner. The former Miss Continental was already deemed a legend within drag communities, but Colby’s star power reached a new level on Friday when she was crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar by RuPaul.

She noticed the change almost immediately. “A beautiful older lady was eating ice cream and she stopped me and said, ‘Oh my God, you are Sasha Colby. It’s so nice to meet you. My friends are going to die.

‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race 15×11’ Review
Image
I have to say that last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race was one of my personal favourites. I don’t know if it is the fact that I thought that I could have done better in the challenge than ninety per cent of the remaining competitors or that we saw the full scale of success (from queens absolutely nailing it to very obviously struggling) or a combination of the two but I think this was one of the better hour-long episodes! The queens were grouped together to complete a series of interviews with some of TV’s most eccentric personalities and saw Sasha Colby excel after throwing her queue cards in the air during an interview with the queen of the “cuchi cuchi” Charo! On the bottom end of the competition however, we saw Malaysia Babydoll Foxx and Selina Estities battle it out to the iconic “Single Ladies...

‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race 15×10’ Review
Image
Last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race marked the two hundredth episode of the American version of the show and so to celebrate the entire episode was dedicated to celebrating some of the most iconic moments in the show’s fifteen-year history! This included a mini-challenge where the queens photo-bombed attention-grabbing moments from previous sessions, the queens discussed their favourite moments and a ball maxi challenge with one category being focussed on re-imagining previous ball categories! I really enjoy when the producers of the show decide to tie sections of the show together as it helps to create a cohesive viewing experience for anyone watching. After putting up a good fight (to the surprise of everyone) in the lip-sync, Spice was sadly told to sashay away which means that both twins are officially out of the competition. At the top end of the episode was Sasha but the...

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 15 episode 11 recap: ‘Two Queens, One Joke’
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 15 continued on March 10 with the next step in the competition toward discovering “America’s next drag superstar.” Last week, the queens wore their journalism hats in celebrity interviews with Charo, Love Connie, and Frankie Grande. The one-on-ones got the best of Malaysia Babydoll Foxx and Salina EsTitties who fell to the bottom two with Malaysia being asked to “sashay away.”

This week, the final seven work take the stage in comedy duos in front of a live audience. Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 11 titled “Two Queens, One Joke” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, judge Ts Madison, and comedy actress Ali Wong.

The seven queens still in the competition are: Anetra, Loosey Laduca, Luxx Noir London, Marcia Marcia Marcia, Mistress Isabelle Brooks, Salina EsTitties, and Sasha Colby.

42% of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ fans say Malaysia Babydoll Foxx was the right queen to ‘sashay away’ in episode 10 [Poll Results]
Image
By the end of episode 10 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 15 on March 3, Salina EsTitties found herself lip synching for her life for the third time. This week she was pitted against Malaysia Babydoll Foxx in the ultimate Beyoncé-off to “Single Ladies.” Aside from the Lalaparuza in episode 9, this was Malaysia’s first time lip synching for the judges, but once again they favored Salina in the Lsfyl and Malaysia was sent packing.

We asked in a recent poll if Malaysia was the right queen to “sashay away” and a majority of fans think that the judges did in fact get it right. 42% of fans polled believe that Malaysia was the queen most deserving of elimination compared to the 34% that thought Salina would have been the right one to go. Salina earned a majority of votes in our episode 9 poll, but this week she evaded the chop despite her prior...

Drag Race RuCap: "50/50's Most Gagworthy Stars"
Image
Nathaniel R: Hello queens, I'm crashing your party this week for the RuCap because I have opinions too..  In fact, I came in with every intention of stirring the pot and having a completely different take but after this 10th episode "50/50's Most Gagworthy Stars"... perhaps I won't be able too, since my some of my favourites didn't do that well. But... did anyone? This interview challenge with special guests Charo, Frankie Grande, and Love Connie was an excellent one. The challenge offered up multiple interview formats  and whatever you think of the three interviewees, none of them are lacking in personality (the hardest interviews are with introverts!). In short there was ample opportunity for all remaining queens to blind us with their charisma, but there was seriously little shining... the best we got was a bit of luster.

Which is not to say that it wasn't an enjoyable episode!

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 Episode 10 Review: 50/50's Most Gagworthy Stars
Timothy P. Rinaldi in RuPaul's Drag Race (2009)
Can the queens pull out their interview skills in front of the cameras? That was the big question on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 Episode 10.

Drag Race has done "interview" Maxi Challenges in the past; it's a great game to test the queens' charisma and ability to think of their feet. Showing off their personality can be the trick to shining and wowing the judges.

But if a queen gets overwhelmed, they can't turn away from the cameras. It's a live challenge!

"50/50's Most Gagworthy Stars" proved that many of the queens from RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 can have careers as interview hosts. Many of them did a great job!

The round was cheeky, fun, and completely unpredictable. The celebrity guests kept these queens on their toes; it was hilarious for us viewers and surprising for the queens, just like an actual interview.

Before getting into the Maxi Challenge, we must...

Drag Race Episode 10: Which 'Safe' Queen Really Belonged in the Bottom?
Image
Loosey Laduca may be the official punching bag of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15, but after processing the results of Friday’s episode, I’d like to direct my attention to a far more deserving queen.

Episode 10 transformed the remaining contestants into TV news hosts, putting them face-to-face with (and occasionally against) three dynamic celebrity personalities — flamenco queen Charo, Ariana’s brother Frankie Grande, and the incomparable Love Connie. (Side note: Did you know Connie played the “Bend and snap? Works every time!” guy in Legally Blonde? Because I sure didn’t!)

‘The View’ Hosts Dress Up as Charo, Moira Rose, Carrie Bradshaw and More for Halloween Episode (Photos)
Image
The hosts of “The View” always go all out for Halloween, and this year was no different. On Monday morning’s show, the theme was “iconic TV characters.”

Ahead of Monday’s episode, the show’s official Twitter account teased that the hosts were “getting into character for a television event decades in the making!” It was a fitting hint, as they opened the episode with a skit in black and white, depicting a dinner party at Joy Behar’s house.

Unfortunately, Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t attend, because she was hosting an episode of “The Twilight Zone.” But with that, she confirmed that this year’s costume theme was classic TV show characters. Introducing each host was a set of opening credits.

Sunny Hostin dressed as Queen Charlotte from “Bridgerton,” while Alyssa Farah Griffin showed up as Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City.” According to the host, she was...

‘The View': Whoopi Goldberg Advocates for Abortion Rights With ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Halloween Costume (Video)
Image
“The View” host Whoopi Goldberg sent a pretty strong message on Monday, using her Halloween costume for the show to advocate for abortion rights.

The theme of this year’s holiday episode was “iconic TV characters,” with each host dressing up as a character they love from throughout the decades. Sunny Hostin dressed as the queen from “Bridgerton,” Alyssa Farah Griffin showed up as Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City,” host Joy Behar appeared as Peggy Bundy from “Married With Children,” Ana Navarro dressed as Charo from “The Love Boat” and Sara Haines arrived as Catherine O’Hara’s character Moira Rose from “Schitt’s Creek.”

To round out the group, Goldberg dressed as June Osborne from “The Handmaids Tale.” Emblazoned on the back of her red cloak was a series of phrases: “My body, My morals, My life, My Choice, Not Yours.”

How Amy Poehler Brought the Love to Documentary ‘Lucy and Desi’
Image
Every woman in comedy idolizes Lucille Ball — and the men should, too — but Amy Poehler got to make a movie about her. Long an accomplished comedian, actress, producer, and director, it’s no surprise that Poehler knocked it out of the park with her first documentary directing job, the warmhearted and jam-packed “Lucy and Desi.” Though she was initially apprehensive to tackle such an oversaturated subject, Poehler was determined to make her mark with a unique angle on the beloved pair. What makes “Lucy and Desi” stand out from most biopics is its focus on Ball’s underlying humanity, including her dedication to family and relationship with her husband, “I Love Lucy” star and producer Desi Arnaz.

“One of the things I started thinking about early on was this idea that they are so famous and funny and successful, but over the years, they’ve kind of become very 2D.

Lucy And Desi – Review
Image
(Original Caption) Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz going over business matters. Picture from Lucy’s personal file.

So here’s the perfect companion to one of the big feature film “docudramas” from the last weeks of 2021. You may even consider it a “super bonus extra” for a proposed home video release. Ah, but it’s so much more than that. It delves into the history and legacy more thoroughly than any “squeezed into a brief timeline” big-screen treatment. Sure there are lots of clips from this duo’s greatest collaboration, which is still being adored by fans all over the planet every day, but there are historical artifacts that many of us have never seen and heard before. And happily, there are the early, early”pre-superstardom” snippets as the careers of these two began to converge and meld. These gems along with archival footage have been assembled by a talented...

‘Lucy and Desi’ Director Amy Poehler Says Ball and Arnaz Were ‘The First Ultimate Power Couple’
Image
A beloved television powerhouse hailed for her keen comedic instincts on-screen as well as having a shrewd producer’s eye for nurturing behind-the-scenes projects and bolstering the talents of others — that’s the eternally iconic Lucille Ball in a nutshell. But it also aptly describes Amy Poehler, which may be why the true-life story of Ball and Desi Arnaz’s relationship and profound impact made an ideal project for Poehler to make her debut directing narrative non-fiction in the new Amazon Studios documentary “Lucy and Desi.”

“I had great respect for her and her comedy, but I didn’t really have any idea what she was like as a person,” Poehler told Variety at the film’s premiere at the Directors Guild of America headquarters on Tuesday. “I just knew her as her character, and then — like I hope most people will when they watch to the film — I was...

Sundance Review: Amy Poehler Directs A Touching Documentary Portrait Of ‘Lucy And Desi’
Image
Apparently it is the season to celebrate the iconic marriage and professional relationship of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Aaron Sorkin wrote and directed a penetrating, funny, revealing, and ultimately moving film, Being The Ricardos which covers a lot of ground in the Lucy/Desi world using dramatic license to place several real events in their lives all in the course of one week of production on I Love Lucy. Although starring Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as the iconic pair, it felt quite real and actually was as you discover watching Amy Poehler’s marvelous love letter to their lives and times in Lucy And Desi, which like Ricardos will be available on Amazon Prime, the perfect companion piece to Sorkin’s film, and a compelling documentary portrait all on its own.

Poehler clearly is an admirer and she has been given the keys to the kingdom here with...

Peacock Debuts ‘Bel-Air’ Teaser (TV News Roundup)
Image
Peacock debuted a trailer for “Bel-Air,” the upcoming drama series that reimagines the ‘90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” “Bel-Air” is set to premiere in 2022.

Based on Morgan Cooper’s viral fan film of the same name, “Bel-Air” stars Jabari Banks as Will, the role played by Will Smith in the original sitcom. The series follows Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. Adrian Holmes, Cassandra Freeman, Olly Sholotan, Coco Jones, Akira Akbar, Jimmy Akingbola, Jordan L. Jones and Simone Joy Jones also star.

In the teaser, Smith gives a dramatic reading of the theme song from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in voiceover as Banks’ Will is shown underwater, surrounded by motifs from the original show: basketballs, fuzzy dice, a crown, etc.

Executive producers include showrunners T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson, director and co-writer Morgan Cooper, Smith, Terence Carter,...

‘The Sacred Spirit’ Review: This Puckish Spanish Debut Imagines Dark Goings-On Among UFO Believers
Image
There’s a moment in “The Sacred Spirit,” Chema García Ibarra’s beguiling feature debut shot on 16mm, when viewers get uncomfortable wondering if the director realizes the playful tone he’s taking makes light of a deeply troubling situation. The concern is unwarranted — Ibarra fully understands what he’s doing — but the fact that the film keeps defying expectation while invariably hitting the right note is a testament to his flair for quirky storytelling combined with a terrific eye. Fascinated by the ways science fiction and the paranormal burrow inside people looking for meaning in an anarchic world, the filmmaker weaves an idiosyncratic story of a group of UFO believers oblivious to a darker element in their midst. A Locarno festival standout, the film should be snapped up by other festivals and showcases.

The tone is set right from the start when little Verónica (Llum Arqués) does an in-class...

Kelly Clarkson, Elton John Help Project Angel Food Raise More Than $700,000
Image
In a sign of what may be seen as an emerging, successful alternative to expensive red carpet charity events, Saturday night’s two-hour Lead With Love: Project Angel Food Emergency Telethon, which aired live on Ktla 5, smashed its fundraising goal. The virtual event exceeded its $500,000 goal by nearly $200,000, totaling more than $700,000 during the all-star event, at very little cost to the Hollywood-based nonprofit Project Angel Food.

A-list names, including Sir Elton John, David Furnish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Matt Bomer and Sharon Stone, contributed brief segments celebrating Project Angel Food’s contributions to Hollywood’s underserved community. Furnish and Curtis both mentioned bringing their families with them to volunteer at the facility, which prepares and delivers tens of thousands of meals each week to people in need.

The list of musical names was fierce, with taped performances from Kelly Clarkson (U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking...

Daytime Emmy Awards’ Most Memorable Moments
Image
Throughout its almost 50-year history, the Daytime Emmy Awards have delivered as heartfelt and, at times, humorous moments as the shows the ceremony itself celebrates. This year, in honor of the upcoming 47th annual kudofest, Variety is looking back on some of the most memorable parts of events past.

Although later admitting some of the struggle he has faced while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, here “Jeopardy” host Trebek was all gratitude and his signature wit, joking that it was a “sympathy” win and quoting Sally Field’s, “You like me, you really like me.” Seeing him step on stage looking so healthy felt like a win in and of itself.

14. Dick Clark & "American Bandstand" tribute

(37th annual ceremony)

Lyle Waggoner in The Carol Burnett Show (1967)
Lyle Waggoner, who starred on “The Carol Burnett Show” and in the 1970s “Wonder Woman” series, has died at 84, Variety has confirmed.

In a statement released by Waggoner’s family it was revealed that the “loving husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, and actor passed away peacefully at home on March 17th at the age of 84 with his wife at his side. The cause of death was cancer.”

Waggoner may have become best known for his roles on “The Carol Burnett Show,” where he started as the announcer in 1967 but stayed on with the sketch show through 1974. Some of his most notable sketches include being interrogated by a Nazi and his finger puppet and playing a love-lorn man in “As The Stomach Turns,” a slave master in “The Oldest Man,” Olympian Mark Spitz to Burnett’s Charo, and an alien known as the Jolly Green Thing.

But that show was hardly his only claim to fame.
