The 14 Worst Supergroups, Cast Ensembles and Collaborations of All Time
Image
You may think it’s cute, but NFL players only shuffle like that when they’re distressed.

14 Damnocracy

A band based on TV ratings and wordplay is doomed to fail from the start. The short-lived VH1 show Supergroup stuffed Sebastian Bach, Jason Bonham, Scott Ian, Ted Nugent and Evan Seinfeld into a Las Vegas mansion. They produced seven episodes of television and exactly zero albums, despite staying together for four years.

13 Andrew W.K. x Glenn Beck

The rock-n-roller had a radio show on the perpetual fascist pedophile apologist’s radio network in 2015. Their little odd couple routine was intended partly to highlight conversations between folks with opposing viewpoints, and partly to launder TheBlaze’s dogshit reputation.

12 ‘The Counselor’

Written by Cormac McCarthy. Directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt. This is 2013 pop culture in a bottle, but they made Diaz hump a...

12 SNL Stars Who Had A Rough Time Working On The Sketch Comedy Show
Image
Earlier this year, "Saturday Night Live" celebrated its 50th anniversary with a star-studded anniversary special on NBC. Among all the best moments from the "SNL 50" anniversary special, one that might stick out to casual fans of the show is the SNL Digital Short in which Bowen Yang and Andy Samberg sing about the fact that "everyone who ever worked at 'SNL' had anxiety."

The reason this short's premise may be surprising is that "Saturday Night Live" seems like the dream job. However, if you keep up with any of its stars after they leave the show, a lot of them have been open about how difficult of a workplace it really is. Little sleep, tons of pressure, and the eyeballs of America on you can ruin the fun for even the most beloved "SNL" stars.

For these 12 former cast members of "SNL," they owe a lot to Lorne Michaels and NBC,...

Dan Aykroyd Explains Why He Skipped SNL 50, Reveals the Moment That Made Him Emotional at Home
Image
Dan Aykroyd is opening up about why he decided to skip SNL 50!

The 73-year-old was one of the original members of the Saturday Night Live cast in the 1970s, but he was notably missing from the 50th anniversary special earlier in 2025. At the time, Dan explained that he skipped the episode in order to watch at home with his family.

Now, Dan is elaborating on his decision to watch from home instead of taking part in the special episode.

Keep reading to find out more…

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday (July 25), Dan explained his decision.

“I wanted to be at home and I wanted to watch the show beginning to end,” Dan said and explained that he wouldn’t be able to watch the whole thing if he was in the show. “I knew if i was there, I’d be in a dressing room,...

Dan Aykroyd gives reason for his absence at SNL 50th anniversary special
Dan Aykroyd
Live from New York, it’s…not Dan Aykroyd. There were several key players missing from this year’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of SNL, including Dana Carvey, Bill Hader and the aforementioned Dan Aykroyd. And while it was previously reported that Aykroyd wouldn’t be taking the stage at Studio 8H due to a scheduling conflict, he is debunking this and providing a totally relatable reason for his absence.

As Dan Aykroyd told Entertainment Weekly about why he snubbed the SNL event, “I wanted to be at home and I wanted to watch the show beginning to end…I knew if i was there, I’d be in a dressing room, I’d be working. I wanted to see it live. I’m a fan of the show today, and I watch it all the time. I love these new players; I think they’re just great. I...

Is Being Fired by ‘SNL’ the Key to Awards Success?
Image
It seems as though Hollywood stars will do almost anything to win major acting awards that in no way resemble golden popcorn buckets.

In addition to going on media blitzes, attending gala events and straight-up suck-uping to voting bodies, one potentially unsung method of achieving awards recognition just might be getting shitcanned by Lorne Michaels.

Among the most recent crop of Emmy nominees is the great Jenny Slate, who was recognized for her work in Dying for Sex in the “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie” category. Slate was famously let go after just one season on SNL (but not for dropping the F-bomb that one time as some folks mistakenly believe).

Obviously Slate is nominated because of her exceptional acting, but we can’t help but notice that she isn’t the first person who’s gotten recognition from the Television Academy after being fired by SNL.

‘The Residence’ Star Uzo Aduba Receives Comedy Actress Emmy Nomination After Series Cancellation
Image
Uzo Aduba picked up a best comedy actress Emmy nomination for The Residence after the Netflix murder mystery was canceled after one season.

Aduba starred as eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp, who was enlisted to help solve the murder of White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito) during a White House state dinner. Aduba as Cupp was billed as the “greatest detective in the world.”

Had The Residence gone to a second season, the plan was for the whodunnit to become an anthology series with Cupp taking on a new case each season. Aduba won an earlier Emmy in 2014 for outstanding guest actress in a comedy for her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on Orange Is the New Black, and a year later took the Emmy for outstanding actress in a drama for the same role.

Then in 2020, Aduba was awarded the win for best actress in a...

Netflix adding a slew of SNL favorites in July in time for Happy Gilmore 2 release
Image
Happy Gilmore 2 tees off on Netflix July 25. To celebrate, the streaming service is launching a collection of movies featuring Sandler and fellow Saturday Night Live alumni.

Sandler returns to one of his most iconic roles for the first time in almost 30 years. Stars returning from the 1996 comedy classic include Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald. Several actors from the Saturday Night Live family are also onboard for Happy Gilmore 2, including Kevin Nealon, Ben Stiller, Marcello Hernandez, Jim Downey, and Martin Herlihy.

But Netflix isn't waiting until July 25 to let fans stream their favorite SNL stars. Here's a breakdown of what's coming to Netflix in July, featuring SNL stars past and present (via Collider).

To no surprise, Happy Gilmore kicks things off. The film premiered just a year after Sandler left Saturday Night Live and has since become a cult classic. In addition to Nealon and Stiller, the original also...

‘The Residence’ Canceled at Netflix After 1 Season But the Story Was Just Getting Started
Image
The lights are out and doors have closed on The Residence, as Netflix has canceled the White House-set murder mystery after just one season. Starring Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the “greatest detective in the world,” Shonda Rhimes‘ whodunnit joins freshman medical drama Pulse on the chopping block of canceled shows. Also starring Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Bronson Pinchot, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, Edwina Findley, Mary Wiseman, and Jane Curtin, news of the cancellation broke on July 2. Deadline first reported the news. The Shondaland-produced mystery followed detective Cordelia Cupp (Aduba) as she investigated a murder during a state dinner. Across eight episodes, she questioned staff and guests to uncover hidden motives while exposing personal dramas inside the presidential residence. But what could have been had the show continued? If the series had gone forward, the show would have become an anthology with Cupp at the center, taking on a new case each season.

‘The Residence’ and ‘Pulse’ Canceled at Netflix
Image
Netflix has canceled a pair of first-year series, The Residence and Pulse.

The two shows both premiered in the spring and had four-week runs in Netflix’s internal, worldwide top 10 rankings, with The Residence lasting a bit longer than than in Nielsen’s U.S. streaming charts. As usual, Netflix does cost-benefit analysis in making renewal or cancellation decisions.

The Residence is a White House-set murder mystery starring Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the “greatest detective in the world.” The series hails from Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland and creator/showrunner Paul William Davies (Scandal). Had the series gone forward, the plan was for it to become an anthology with Cupp taking on a new case each season.

The cast for the first (and now only) season also features Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Edwina Findley, Bronson Pinchot, Mary Wiseman, Julieth Restrepo, Al Mitchell, Mel Rodriguez, Ken Marino, Jason Lee and Jane Curtin,...

Check Out Buck Henry’s Brutal Roasts of the Original ‘SNL’ Cast Members
Image
Of all the members of Saturday Night Live’s Five Timers Club (those celebs so hilarious that SNL asked them back to host at least five times), Buck Henry is clearly the most obscure. While Henry did his share of acting, he’s most well-known as a comedy writer, the pen behind classics like The Graduate, Catch-22 and Get Smart. But besides Steve Martin, Henry was the original cast’s most popular host, headlining the show 10 times between 1976 and 1980.

In 1979’s Rolling Stone Visits Saturday Night Live, Henry introduced the Not Ready for Prime Time Players. “Personally, I have never thought that they were very funny,” he explained. “What they have engaged, by doing whatever it is that they do, is not so much my admiration as my sympathy.”

Here are Henry’s scorching-hot roasts of each of the early SNL comedians…

Image

Factoring in Live+7 across all platforms, the late night sketch show averaged 8.1 million viewers during the 2024-2025 television season, up +12% vs. Season 49 and marked the show’s best numbers since Season 47 (2021-2022).

Eddie Murphy’s Takeaway From ‘SNL50’: ‘Everybody Was Real Old’
Image
Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary show was mind-blowing for Eddie Murphy, for all the obvious reasons. But one fact in particular caught his attention. “It was a trip,” he told Jennifer Hudson this week on her eponymous talk show. “Because everybody was real old.”

No kidding. Octogenarian Lorne Michaels produced the show, a birthday party attended by 77-year-old Jane Curtin, 81-year-old Chevy Chase and 88-year-old Garrett Morris. Murphy appeared in comedy sketches with youngsters like Will Ferrell and Tracy Morgan, both of whom are pushing 60. Murphy himself is 64, an age that qualifies him for Denny’s senior breakfast menu.

“I got on that show when I was 19 years old,” Murphy said. “I went back, and I saw all these people 40 years later. It was just a trip.”

“I felt like I was part of something,” the comedian continued. “That show was on for 50 years, so it's this American institution.

5 Ways ‘Saturday Night Live’ Missed the Moment in Historic Season 50
Image
There was no way SNL Season 50 could live up to the hype.

For the past three or four years (at least), Saturday Night Live has been treading water as it geared up for its historic golden anniversary, a landmark that no other comedy show has come close to realizing. Sure, the show was stuck in mediocre mode, but watch out when SNL blew off the doors for Season 50! There’d be four documentaries, Olympics cameos, an anniversary concert, books, commemorative T-shirts and a parade of the biggest comedy stars of the past half-century.

But unfortunately — and inevitably — SNL failed to meet the moment. While oversized expectations meant the show was doomed to disappoint, SNL still managed to find multiple ways to screw up the biggest year in TV comedy history. Here are five ways Saturday Night Live missed its most significant moment…

1 Where Were the Classic Cast Members?

‘SNL’ Denies ‘Formal Apology’ to Aimee Lou Wood, But This Cast Member Sent Flowers
Image
Just when it seemed like the “Morgan Wallen left 15 seconds early” story would be the weirdest, refuse-to-die Saturday Night Live controversy of the year, “Aimee Lou Wood’s teeth” sauntered up to the bar and said, “Hold my beer.”

Getting you up to speed in case you missed it: SNL poked fun at the extended Trump family in an HBO parody called The White Potus. Most of the gags were aimed at political figures, but the character of Chelsea, played by Aimee Lou Wood, was turned into a dental joke. Sarah Sherman popped in some enormous fake chompers to imitate Wood’s toothy smile, a bit that inspired Wood to call out SNL on social media for “mean” humor. Within hours, Wood reported that a) she’d received a lot of online support and b) “I’ve received apologies from SNL.”

But as with many things SNL-related, stories that...

Before The Pitt, Noah Wyle Launched An Epic Made-For-tv Fantasy Franchise
Image
Some actors are, for whatever reason, best suited to television stardom. There's no clear reason why folks like Tom Selleck, Kate Jackson, or Ted Danson couldn't be movie stars, but once you've had a long-running success on the small screen, viewers closely associate you with quality TV. So when they join the cast of a new series, networks and streamers can be fairly certain that a built-in fan base will be joining them.

In terms of television drawing power, few actors have been more reliable over the last 30 years than Noah Wyle. Though George Clooney was the breakout star of "ER" when it premiered on NBC in 1994, it didn't take long for viewers to fall in love with Dr. John Carter, the wet-behind-the-ears medical student who rose through the institutional ranks of Cook County General Hospital over 11 unforgettable seasons. Wyle could've dipped out of "ER" and made a go out of it in film,...

Agatha Christie Fans Will Love Netflix's New Chart-Busting Murder Mystery Series
Image
Several years ago, TV powerhouse Shonda Rhimes left her original home at ABC behind and signed a major development deal with Netflix, marking a new era for the creator of shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal." Arguably, "Bridgerton" has been her biggest credit on the streamer yet — though it was created by Rhimes acolyte Chris Van Dusen, she does serve as an executive producer — but now, a new series by Paul William Davies with Rhimes' name attached as an executive producer is making waves on Netflix in its own right.

"The Residence" is a madcap, high-octane, and very funny murder mystery conceived by Davies and centers around a murder at the White House during a state dinner honoring Australia; when the Chief Usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito) is found dead in the game room, everyone is trapped inside of the presidential residence until the culprit is caught. That's where...

7 Sitcom Spin-Offs That Never Made It Past the Pilot Stage
Image
For fans of King of the Hill, Monsignor Martinez is about as cool as you can get. Seen regularly on the television of the Hill family, Monsignor Martinez is a fictional priest who always seems to be wrapped up in melodramatic life-and-death adventures in the telenovela named after him. In King of the Hill, the ridiculous clips of Monsignor Martinez are always good for a quick laugh, but if the television gods had complied, we could have gotten a lot more of him.

In 2000, King of the Hill writers Mike Judge, Greg Daniels and Jim Dauterive crafted a half-hour live-action pilot based on the character. Sadly, Fox didn’t proceed with the series. According to an interview transcript posted to the FilmBoards forum in 2004 (the original interview doesn’t appear to be online), King of the Hill actor Dave Herman reportedly said Fox didn’t want a show where “a...

Shonda Rhimes is famous for the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy, as well as Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder. She also founded the television production company Shondaland, which produced all her titles, and since 2017, she has had a close relationship with Netflix.

Rhimes' biggest recent title was the Bridgerton adaptation, which is a major hit on Netflix. Now, her company produced the mystery drama The Residence, created by Paul William Davies. Shortly after the release of the star-studded series, The Residence quickly became a hit on Netflix, per Tudum.

The series premiered on the platform on Mar. 20, and for the week between Mar. 17 and 23, it reached the second spot in the global charts, as well as the U.S. Although it didn't have a full week to make an impression, Shondaland's new title had 6.4 million views and 49.5 million hours viewed.

‘The Residence’ Creator Unpacks Netflix Mystery’s ‘Mischievous’ Resolution
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from Netflix’s “The Residence.”

“The Residence” took Netflix viewers through an elaborate tour of the White House — via a complicated but comedic murder mystery.

Created by Paul William Davies and based on the non-fiction book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House” by Kate Andersen Brower, the mystery of who killed White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito) was revealed by the end of Episode 8. Detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) found that Lilly Schumacher, the President’s social secretary played by Molly Griggs, was the person responsible for the murder.

Things get complicated from there, as at least five of the 157 potential suspects had a hand in moving Wynter’s body from where the murder took place, to where Nan Cox (Jane Curtin) first found him and kicked off the investigation.

‘The Residence’ reviews: Critics hail Uzo Aduba’s ‘magnetic presence,’ but call the whodunit ‘overstuffed’
Image
Move over, Benoit Blanc. Netflix has a new detective in town. Uzo Aduba stars as Cordelia Cupp on The Residence, the streamer's new whodunit, all eight episodes of which dropped on Thursday. But is this murder mystery a killer one?

As of Thursday afternoon, The Residence has a generally favorable score of 66 on Metacritic based on 20 reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it's 81 percent fresh based on 16 reviews.

"Although there is an ensemble vibe, it remains Aduba's show, and rightfully so. She is a magnetic presence and The Residence takes full advantage of that," writes The Guardian's Lucy Mangan. "This is not television that is going to change the world, but it is going to give you eight hours of fantastic escape. Enjoy."

"'Fun' is absolutely the watchword of this comic thriller," says Rolling Stone's Alan Sepinwall.

Created by Scandal writer Paul William Davies and produced by Shondaland, The Residence follows Cordelia,...

‘The Residence’ Review: Uzo Aduba Leads a Sharp Ensemble in Netflix’s Excellent Whodunnit
Image
Some things are universally true, like Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation or the fact that water is wet. Also true: TV viewers love a murder mystery.

There’s a reason, after all, that there are so many of them on TV at any given time, from long-running procedurals like “Law & Order” to soapy dramas like “Pretty Little Liars” to dark and prestigious limited series like “True Detective.” TV viewers even like ‘em funny, like the recent “Matlock” reboot, “Only Murders In The Building” or Kaitlin Olson’s hit “High Potential.”

You have to think that’s why Netflix and Shondaland teamed up once again to make “The Residence,” its new 8-episode whodunnit set (of all places) in the White House. With a bang-up ensemble cast that includes everyone from Randall Park to Bronson Pinchot to Kylie Minogue, and a series of twists and turns that practically requires a binge-watch,...

The Residence episode 1 brings the laughs to a White House whodunit (recap and review)
Image
This post contains spoilers from The Residence episode 1 from this point forward.

Welcome to the whimsically humorous world of The Residence, Netflix's murder mystery series that takes place in the White House. From Grey's Anatomy and Bridgerton mastermind Shonda Rhimes, the series stars Orange Is the New Black star and Emmy winner Uzo Aduba as the eccentric but world renown detective Cordelia Cupp. She's almost as excited about figuring out whodunnit as she is about seeing all the birds the White House grounds have to offer.

In episode 1, we learn that the White House's chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito) has been found dead by the president's mother-in-law Nan (Jane Curtin), and even though the president's chief adviser Harry Hollinger (Ken Marin) wants to quickly rule the death a suicide given the cuts on his wrists, Cordelia knowns there's much more to the story. The death happened during...

Late in the new Netflix limited series The Residence, a character complains, “People like a murder mystery! They think they’re fun!” After a beat, though, he can’t help but admit, “And it is fun.”

“Fun” is absolutely the watchword of this comic thriller, created by Paul William Davies and produced by Shonda Rhimes, which cross-pollinates Davies and Rhimes’ work on Scandal with the DNA of lots of classic whodunits, from Miss Marple all the way through to the Benoit Blanc/Knives Out trilogy. The Residence wears all of...

‘The Residence’ Review: Uzo Aduba Solves a Murder at 1600 in a Netflix Mystery That Amuses and Exhausts in Equal Measure
Image
When Jennifer Euston was casting Orange Is the New Black, it stands to reason that she was selecting interesting performers first and, given the show’s evocative opening credits, interesting faces second. But somewhere on the opening page of criteria, there must have been a listing that read: “Must also be capable of fronting a Columbo-esque mystery procedural.”

In the case of Kate Mulgrew, she’d already starred in the iconic spinoff series, Mrs. Columbo.

Natasha Lyonne is weeks away from the return of her Emmy-nominated turn as human lie detector Charlie Cale in Peacock’s Poker Face.

New to the murder-solving fray is Uzo Aduba, exceptionally eccentric in Netflix’s new Shondaland-produced The Residence. The show is the latest entry in both the burgeoning Orange Is the New Forensic Investigation genre and the even more burgeoning The World’s Greatest Detective Is a Weirdo genre.

The Residence is an entertainingly chaotic goof,...

Dolly Parton Was Game for an ‘SNL’ Sketch That Raquel Welch Refused to Do
Image
Raquel Welch and Saturday Night Live weren’t a match made in comedy heaven. The actress was assigned a “babysitter” to keep her out of Lorne Michaels’ hair when she hosted in 1976, according to Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live. Welch was attempting to make the transition from 1960s sex symbol to Vegas-style dynamo. What could SNL do with a talent like this?

Welch had ideas, like this bizarro, high-kickin’ musical number. SNL viewers must have felt like they were watching a hybrid of a Donny and Marie variety show and a late-night Skinemax movie.

Of course, SNL writers had their own pitches, mostly centered on her cleavage. Chevy Chase had a brilliant idea — every time Welch was on-screen, he wanted the camera to slowly drift from her face to her breasts. Even funnier (to Chase): No one would tell Welch this was happening, though she...

The ‘SNL50’ Moments That Made Bill Murray Bawl Like A Baby
Image
Bill Murray expected to laugh as an honored guest at SNL50, but crying wasn’t on his agenda. That’s on you, Bill — who attends a reunion with longtime friends without getting a case of the feels?

“It was surprisingly emotional," Murray told Sway Calloway on SiriusXM's Sway in the Morning, per Entertainment Weekly. “I wept three times in the show. It really got to me.”

What started the waterworks? “Oh, there were sketches that were dying,” Murray replied (and he wasn’t wrong). “No, I’m kidding.”

The moments that actually got to Murray were those filmed tributes that featured former castmates who’d passed away. “I was watching, and there's a lot of video and history that they’re showing,” he explained. “And I didn’t see it coming, but there was Gilda up there dancing with Steve Martin.”

Mardi Gras Was the Site of ‘SNL’s Most Disastrous Show
Image
In the annals of “things that have gone wrong on Saturday NIght Live” — Ashlee Simpson’s lip-synching disaster, Charles Rocket’s inopportune F-bomb, slam dancers destroying Studio 8H during a Fear performance — no individual episode can compare to the debacle surrounding the show’s live, prime-time special from Mardi Gras in 1977.

Saturday Night had become the hottest show on TV, and NBC was ready to cash in on that early success with a primetime special. Lorne Michaels was eager to take his show on the road, using iconic cities’ architecture as urban comedy sets. When someone suggested New Orleans as a possible destination, Michaels was all for it. “Let’s go get steeped in it!” he proclaimed, according to Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live.

The cast was stoked as well. Who wouldn’t want to escape New York’s winter for a week or two in the sunshine?...

'I'm Sorry if I Slammed You': Saturday Night Live Star Denies Condemning Tom Hanks Over SNL50 Joke
Image
Former Saturday Night Live star Victoria Jackson has denied "slamming" Tom Hanks for a joke in the SNL 50 special. Hanks angered some conservatives by reprising his role as Maga supporter Doug in a "Black Jeopardy" sketch at the anniversary show.

Jackson was initially reported to be angry over the suggestion that Donald Trump's supporters are racist, telling TMZ that she thought the sketch was "stupid." The comedian has since released a statement on Instagram to deny that she had any issue with Hanks, specifically.

Dan Aykroyd Praises ‘SNL50’ as ‘Triumphant’ After Skipping Due to ‘Prior Commitments’: I Smiled ‘From Start to Finish’
Image
Original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Dan Aykroyd did not make an appearance on the series’ 50th anniversary special on Sunday, but he nonetheless enjoyed watching it from home.

“All Heads up toasting triumphant SNL 50th,” Aykroyd wrote in a post on X. “Advantage of not attending — got to see every second of concert and show on TV. Quote from my children: ‘Look at daddy’s smile!’ Had it from start to finish. Congratulations Lorne. Well done as usual.”

Aykroyd bowed out of the live broadcast due to “prior commitments,” his representative told Variety. He was the only surviving original cast member to miss out — Garrett Morris appeared on stage, Laraine Newman was in a pre-taped sketch, and Jane Curtin and Chevy Chase were in the building.

Still, Aykroyd posted that day on X: “Cracking a Head with pride at having been a co-founder of SNL along with everyone we...

Jack Nicholson Introduces Adam Sandler’s ‘SNL’ Tribute Song During 50th Anniversary Special
Image
Adam Sandler performed a song that paid tribute to Saturday Night Live’s 50 years on the air during Sunday night’s anniversary special, but not before he was introduced by retired Hollywood veteran Jack Nicholson.

Nicholson introduced the Grown Ups actor before he began his referential track, where he highlighted infamous SNL moments, pondered when Lorne Michaels will retire and quipped about “finding out your favorite musician is antisemitic.”

Sandler kicked off his performance saying, “everyone in this room has something in common,” pointing out that “all of our lives were changed by the show” before poking fun at some lighthearted moments. He questioned who would “take over the show when Lorne retires” in his lyrics before he appeared to joke that Speedy Rosenthal, a longtime member of SNL’s music department, would be the one to take over Michaels’ spot.

The comedian and actor also seemingly threw a jab at Kanye West,...

The Residence Trailer and Key Art From Netflix
Image
Netflix and Shondaland have revealed the official trailer and key art for the upcoming series The Residence, which will launch on the streaming service on March 20, 2025.

132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.

Uzo Aduba stars as Cordelia Cupp, a consulting detective for the Metropolitan Police Department. Known for her wry humor, relentless pursuit of truth and a sharp eye for human behavior, Cupp is the most sought-after detective in the world—and an avid birder to boot.

Joining her is Randall Park as Special Agent Edwin Park of the FBI, who is tasked with partnering with Cupp during a high-stakes State Dinner. While Park harbors skepticism about Cupp’s unconventional methods, their dynamic promises to...

‘The Residence’ Trailer: Uzo Aduba and Randall Park Investigate a Government Murder in Crime Comedy
Image
A White House-set whodunnit from Shonda Rhimes? We’re seated.

The latest Netflix series from mega-producer Rhimes is a mix of “Only Murders in the Building” meets “Knives Out,” with Rhimes and executive producing partner Betsy Beers reuniting with “Scandal” alum Paul William Davies to go back to D.C.

The screwball crime comedy stars Uzo Aduba as Metropolitan Police Department consulting detective Cordelia Cupp, who is tasked with solving a murder alongside FBI Special Agent Edwin Park (Randall Park). The duo are billed as a modern-day Sherlock and Watson and ”Odd Couple” team, as Aduba’s Cupp is the most sought-after detective in the world but Park remains skeptical about her unconventional methods.

As the character description teases for Aduba’s role, Cupp is “an astute observer of human behavior, with a distinctive and – to some, unsettling – conversational style. As she dives deeper into the evening’s events and key suspects,...

The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, A24 and Cairo Cowboy, and stars Youssef, Alia Shawkat, Mandy Moore, Chris Redd, Salma Hindy, Randa Jarrar, Akaash Singh and Whitmer Thomas.

Why Dana Carvey, Bill Hader and More ‘SNL’ Legends Skipped 50th Anniversary Show
Image
(Updated with new information from Dan Aykroyd’s reps.)

“Saturday Night Live” icon Dana Carvey has frequently returned to Studio 8H this season to play President Joe Biden, and even revived his famed Church Lady character in December. So why wasn’t he seen on Sunday’s “SNL50: The Anniversary Special”?

Variety has learned that Carvey had been struck with a “bad flu” and was too under the weather to attend. That would explain why he wasn’t there, but his buddy (and podcast partner) David Spade did participate. It’s likely Carvey (who was an “SNL” regular from 1986 to 1993 but has guested many times since then) will share more on what happened when the duo release the next episode of their podcast “Fly on the Wall With Dana Carvey and David Spade,” which normally comes out on Wednesdays.

Because he had been so active recently on this season of “SNL,...

In the lead-up to the 50th anniversary special, Peacock released a four-part docuseries, “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” to honor the legacy of the sketch series, with over 60 contributors, including “SNL” alumni. Amy Poehler and Bowen Yang were just two of the documentary’s subjects,...

My Night With the Blues Brothers
Image
In the history of Saturday Night Live, was anything as secretive and anticipated as the moment this season right before Timothée Chalamet appeared onstage to sing the first of three Bob Dylan numbers? Which songs would they be? How would he sound? For me, it was all strangely familiar — a throwback to the moment when a lucky bunch of us in the SNL audience witnessed a complete-unknown music moment of its time, and from an equally unexpected source.

I can’t remember how we knew about it, but in the...

‘SNL50’: EP Lorne Michaels Gets Shout-Out As He Joins Curtain Call Alongside Original Cast Members
Image
While SNL50: The Anniversary Special was not a regular episode, it ended the way every Saturday Night Live show for the last 50 years has, with a curtain call. This time, it was supersized, with the stage of Studio 8H packed by representatives of five decades of SNL casts, hosts and musical guests.

Former cast member and five-time host Martin Short took on emcee duties, acknowledging original cast members Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris and Laraine Newman on stage, with Curtin and Newman holding up a photo of their late colleague Gilda Radner.

“They paved the way,” Martin said of the group, with fellow Og Dan Aykroyd noticeably missing from the festivities. (Fans also took to social media to react to more recent cast member Bill Hader — and his hugely popular character Stefon — being Mia from the special.)

“And finally, the reason we are all here, the man who made our dreams come true,...

‘SNL50’: Bill Murray Names Top 10 Weekend Update Anchors, Leaves Out Colin Jost

Former Weekend Update anchor Bill Murray returned to Saturday Night Live on the show’s 50th anniversary special to list his top 10 anchors — none of whom were the man next to him, Colin Jost.

First, Murray poked fun at how there has only been one Black anchor of the segment: Michael Che, who has had the role alongside Jost since 2014.

Jack Nicholson Makes Rare TV Appearance at ‘SNL50,’ Introduces Adam Sandler’s Heartfelt Song Honoring the Show’s History
Image
Adam Sandler’s performance at Sunday night’s “SNL50: Anniversary Special” was one of the most memorable moments of the night — even before it began. The performance was introduced by Jack Nicholson, who received loud applause inside Studio 8H.

“Everyone in this room has something in common. All of our lives were changed by the show,” Sandler, who spent five years on “Saturday Night Live” from 1991 to 1995, began. His song highlighted many behind-the-scenes jokes, including calling out “Drunk Wally” for holding the cue cards upside down and thanking “Nurse Teresa” for the many doses of Pepto Bismol.

“50 years of writers seeing Spielberg at Lorne’s monitors, not laughing at one of their sketches that he obviously hated,” Sandler sang. “50 years of those same writers getting wasted at the after party and loudly telling everybody that ‘Jaws ‘was overrated.”

Sandler joked about how each cast feels they’re the best,...
