Jaime Pressly's 15 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Jaime Pressly movies and TV shows contain an interesting mix of genres but she always stands out when she gets her chance to shine. Presley started her career as a teenager when she got involved in modeling while also training as a gymnast. By the time she was 15, she dropped out of high school and moved to Japan to further her modeling career. This led to her first TV appearance, where she had an uncredited role on Baywatch, which then led to her first major breakout.

In 1997, the 20-year-old Presley was cast as the lead in Poison Ivy: The New Seduction, the third movie in the franchise that starred Drew Barrymore and Alyssa Milano before her. From there, her career started to pick up steam, although she almost found herself typecast in similar roles in movies like Joe Dirt and TV shows like My Name is Earl. Despite this,...

Why Cabin Fever's Pancakes Scene Is So Weird
Image
The Cabin Fever pancakes scene might be the strangest in the Eli Roth debut horror movie, and it still makes very little sense all these years later. Roth has had a varied directorial career, and whether one loves or hates his films, it's hard to deny that they're usually at least memorable. That began with Cabin Fever (2002), a bizarre blend of horror and comedy. One minute, a character shaves their leg's skin off due to a terrifying flesh-eating virus; the next, Roth makes a cameo as a stoner. The tone of Cabin Fever is all over the place.

How much of that odd sensibility was informed by Roth himself becomes quite apparent when watching the 2016 Cabin Fever remake, which stuck to the original very closely but seemed to lack any of its charm or heart. As much weirdness as can be found in Cabin Fever, the award for the oddest scene goes to the "Pancakes!

30 Best Horror Movies Set In The Woods
Image
Woodlands and forests are effective backdrops for horror stories, offering unique close-to-nature scares and allowing filmmakers to be more provocative. The best horror movies in the woods span various sub-genres of horror and feature gore, ghosts, monsters, psychological horror, and post-apocalyptic survival horror. Movies like "Annihilation," "The Ritual," and "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" demonstrate how a single forest location can be used in limitless ways within the horror genre.

Woodlands and forests are one of the most effective backdrops for horror stories, and the best horror movies in the woods use the unique close-to-nature scares only a forest or jungle can bring. They also tend to be more provocative, shocking, and experimental with their ideas. Some of the most well-known horror movies set in forests span various distinct sub-genres of horror and can boast some of the most notorious horror movies ever, thanks to movies like The Blair Witch Project,...

10 Horror Movie Remakes That Toned Down The Brutality Of The Original Films
Image
Modern horror movie remakes often tone down excessive violence from original films for various reasons. Some remakes, like Cabin Fever (2016) and Suspiria (2018), may lose impact by reducing gore. The Last House On The Left (2009) remake, while polished, may lack the shocking brutality of the original.

Warning: This article contains discussion of sexual violence and disturbing themes

Although it's often assumed that audiences' tolerance for violence has increased over the years, many horror movie remakes prove that, in reality, earlier films can be even more brutal than later projects. While, in general, it's true that viewers have become more exposed to violence than they were when cinema was in its infancy, modern horror films do not have a monopoly on brutality. In fact, some of the most violent and shocking movies ever made have been substantially toned down in their remakes.

There are many reasons why a horror movie remake might...

Cabin Fever (2002) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re preparing for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited slasher Thanksgiving – which reaches theatres this Friday, November 17th – by looking back at his 2002 feature debut Cabin Fever (watch it Here). To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above.

Directed by Roth from a screenplay he wrote with Randy Pearlstein, Cabin Fever has the following synopsis: Bert, a college student vacationing with friends in the mountains, mistakenly shoots a local man with a skin infection while hunting in the woods. Panicking, he abandons the scene and leaves the man for dead. When the man stumbles into a reservoir, he infects the water supply, and soon one of Bert’s friends becomes infected. The friends struggle to stop the contagious, flesh-eating disease while on the run from a group...

Why Cabin Fever Made Eli Roth the Next Big Thing In Horror
Image
Cabin Fever stood out in the horror genre with its clever blend of claustrophobic paranoia, dark humor, and social commentary on urban vs. rural societies. The film's timely commentary on how society treats each other during fearful situations resonated even more during the Covid-19 pandemic. Director Eli Roth refused to compromise his vision for Cabin Fever, which set it apart as a refreshing throwback to classics while still being innovative for the future.

Every so often, the horror genre will have a filmmaker emerge as a breath of fresh air. From Mike Flanagan to Ari Aster, there are always new directors who change the game in the world of horror and take it to the next level. In 2002, it was a man named Eli Roth and it was a little movie called Cabin Fever. The director himself once recounted how a last-minute screening of the film that year completely changed his life,...

‘Clinton Road’ Review
Stars: Ace Young, Erin O’Brien, Cody Calafiore, Katie Morrison, Lauren Lavera, James DeBello, Sarah Pribis, Ice-t, Eric Roberts, Vincent Pastore, Carlos Leon, Bo Dietl, Margo Urban | Written by Derek Ross Mackay | Directed by Richard Grieco, Steve Stanulis

When a films starts with a simple narrative explaining the movie or what is about to happen, with the text showing on screen, I always have a quick smile. There’s some classic horror that has started this way and I think I mostly remember it from the begining of The Blair Witch Project. Because of that my hopes are always a little higher when I see this, for some reason I forget the dozens, possibly hundreds of movies that I’ve seen with this opening that haven’t been so great. As you’ve probably guessed, Clinton Road starts this way.

Clinton Road has three fairly well known acting names that star.

Blu-ray Review: Cabin Fever – 2016 – (Scream Factory)
I don’t like to write negative reviews, so I’ll keep this short and sweet. I realize that Eli Roth is a divisive topic, and that he gets that hipster blood a-boiling, but when I heard they were remaking his film Cabin Fever, I felt a little boil in the blood myself. And this is me we’re talking about here. I’m usually the one defending these remakes from attacks and charges of sexually assaulted childhoods. But goddamn it, this is one of the most unnecessary things I’ve ever seen. Even if you weren’t a fan of the original, you can’t think that a remake of such a recent film is a good idea, especially one that is widely considered to be awesome, and already in the English language. But that’s exactly what they did. I had my suspicions when more information started to trickle in,...

The Fp

Stars: Jason Trost, Lee Valmassy, Art Hsu, Caitlyn Folley, Nick Principe, Brandon Barrera, James DeBello, Sean Whalen, James Remar | Written by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost | Directed by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost

It seems everyone and their uncle is trying to make instant cult movies these days. Whether they be grindhouse-inspired genre flicks or retro movies that throwback to the heyday of VHS, it seems “cult” is the new cool. However trying to make a cult film and succeeding at making a cult film are two very different things…

Thankfully The Fp falls into the later category, with what can only be described as a mash-up of Escape From New York and Step Up!

Set in a dystopian future, where a relentless turf war rages. The Fp sees two rival gangs feud for control of the rural wasteland Frazier Park (the Fp of the title) in the deadly arena...

Full Details for Charm from the Producers of Last House on the Left, Hills Have Eyes
Jonathan Craven (son of Wes) and Cody Zwieg - who previously produced The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes remakes - are back with a new thriller entitled Charm, from director Ashley Cahill.

Cahill also stars in ths film alongside Rebecca Dayan, Jennifer Murray, James DeBello and Jake Hoffman.

Kirsten Dunst apparently makes a cameo as well.

Cahill plays Malcolm, a young man whose principle interests are movies, New York, and mass murder.  He's a New Yorker who gets tired of how gentrified, tepid and antiseptic it's all become.  So, he decides to take matters into his own hands by personally starting a crime wave which he hopes will catch on and drive real estate value down, opening up the city to bohemians, artists and a swell of creativity, just like the supposed good 'ole days of the 1970s and '80s. The only problem is: Nobody is paying attention.

Red-Band and Green-Band Trailers for The Fp
Last week, the red-band trailer for The Fp went online, and today Drafthouse Films has released the green-band version.  Both trailers do a good job of setting up the movie's premise: With an 80s-style vibe, the plot pits two gangs against each other, and their differences are settled by playing "Beat Beat Revolution" (based off the real-world rhythm-dance game Dance Dance Revolution).  The red-band version is heavy on the swearing, but it also does a better job of showing off the fun dialogue and intentionally corny lines like "He wasn't expecting the unexpected!"  The Fp may seem like a commercial or a comedy sketch gone on too long, but I'm going to trust the positive word from the film's premiere at last year's SXSW Film Festival. Hit the jump to check out the trailers.  The film stars Jason Trost, Lee Valmassy, Art Hsu, Caitlyn Folley, Nick Principe, Brandon Barrera, James DeBello,...

10 Years Later Movie Review – Dances With Films
Aaron Michael Metchik
Title: 10 Years Later Writer-director: Aaron Metchik Starring: Rachel Boston, Jake Hoffman, James Debello, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Senta Moses, Aaron Metchik, McKinley Freeman, Colin Fickes, Lee De Broux There’s a natural drama and tingly anticipation that marks all reunions of once thick-as-thieves adolescents, which is why of course the subgenre of movies that specifically trades in anniversary gatherings is so healthy and robust. Another filing in this category arrives in the form of writer-director Aaron Metchik’s ’10 Years Later’, a low-budget, character-based thriller of sorts in which a high school reunion goes awry, and ends up with a kidnapping. Indie Horror Month - 25 Milestones in Independent Horror Filmmaking: Part 5
Welcome back to the last installment of Dread Central’s look back at the 25 milestones that shaped the landscape of independent horror filmmaking over the last 100 years. I apologize for the delay on the last five milestones as I had no idea just how busy I’d be while in Austin covering the South by Southwest Film Festival (which also champions the independent spirit of filmmaking most of the time) so I am glad to be back now and have the opportunity to pay homage to these last five moments in indie horror history.

We’ve already celebrated 20 milestones through 1987, and today we start in 1999 with one of the most innovative independent modern horror films that not only acted as a game changer in the horror genre but also was one of the first movies to effectively use the Internet as a marketing tool.

1999- The Blair Witch Project Breaks...

Cabin Fever (Overrated? - A review)
2002 - 93 mins. - Rated R

D: Eli Roth

C: Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, James DeBello, Cerina Vincent

Group of college aged friends staying at a remote cabin are infected by a flesh eating virus.

Cabin Fever does have some good moments. There are moments of laugh out loud humor. There are moments of sickening gore effects. There are moments that are highly stylized. There are moments that recall the horror films of yesteryear. The problem is that Cabin Fever only has moments. It doesn't come together to form a cohesive whole. The film simply doesn't gel. It's too all over the place. Cabin Fever is an indulgent mess of a movie that tries to have it every which way possible mixing elements of retro, slapstick antics, off the wall humor, character study elements, over the top gore and stylized vignettes. There are some innovative ideas and, as said earlier, some good moments.

There's No Time to Fear this Latest Trailer
The trailer, artwork, and plot crunch have arrived for Michael Korbic's new indie slasher flick No Time to Fear, and we've got all the goods for you right here in one blood-stained package.

Synopsis

On an overdue camping trip a group of life-long friends decide to change their lives by moving from California to the East Coast. The trip ends abruptly for Celine, Jake (James DeBello, Cabin Fever), Derek (Daniel Kountz, Halloweentown II), Rachel, and Nate when Nate shoots an ominous statue hidden in the woods.

The friends are launched into upheaval when Nate shoots himself in the head after seeing a corpse-like double of himself. Celine resents her boyfriend, Jake, accusing him of being uncompassionate about Nate's suicide. Rachel fights with Derek over his brewing friendship with Celine.

As the remaining four friends prepare for a new life, they find themselves under assault by an evil spirit that...

With This Trailer, There's Nothing to Fear
James DeBello should know to stay out of the woods. Especially after what happened to him in Cabin Fever . Nevertheless, he's back on another camping trip with a new group of friends/victims in Nothing to Fear , a film by Michael Korbic and written by Leonardo Barthel. Fear looks to tread a lot of familiar territory as it tells of an excursion in the woods that leads to the destruction of an archaic statue and doppelgangers. We'll update you when this finds distribution. For now, watch the trailer.

2001 Maniacs:field Of Screams Exclusive Interview: Jimmy Evans Vs. Brian S
Jimmy Evans is new to the horror world but his first swan dive into film is Tim Sullivan's 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams! That's not too shabby being his first film and the cool way he got involved! Check out the really fun interview we did below and remember 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams will be out on July 20th. Brian  S- First off, how did you get involved with 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams?

Jimmy- Well, I've always been a huge fan of horror movies. I used to film my own horror movies in the woods with my cousins all of the time. James DeBello's role as Bert in "Cabin Fever" is kinda what got me into wanting to act. He's the fuckin' man in that movie. I hope to someday play a character just like Bert. And Tim Sullivan is my cousin, and he knew that I've been wanting to work in film.

Exclusive: David Hillenbrand Takes Us on an Unrated Trip Through Transylmania
David Hillenbrand takes us on an unrated trip through Transylmania

Transylmania, the latest comedy outing from Dorm Daze creators David and Scott Hillenbrand, is finally making its long awaited DVD debut on April 27th. The film reunites the cast from National Lampoon's Dorm Daze franchise, and finds a motley crew of college students embarking on the wildest, sexiest, most outrageous semester abroad ever at famed Romanian cultural outpost Razvan University. Located deep in the heart of the "cursed land" of Transylvania in a centuries-old castle, Razvan isn't your typical institution of higher learning. And the black leather-clad professors, three-foot-tall dean, instruction in crucifix-wielding, and topless vampiresses lurking in dark corners are just the start in this laugh riot that ignites the screen with sexiness. We recently caught up with David to find out more about the film. Here's our conversation with Mr. Hillenbrand:

Most modern spoof films are truly awful.

Blu-Ray, DVD Review: Awful ‘Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever;’ Original Available in HD
Chicago – Horror fans heard the buzz surrounding “Cabin Fever” for months before it came out and the film launched Mr. Eli Roth to the “Hostel” films and even a role in the multiple Oscar nominee “Inglourious Basterds”. That film has now been released on Blu-ray to coincide with its straight-to-dvd sequel “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever,” itself directed by an already-acclaimed new horror director, “House of the Devil“‘s Ti West.

“Cabin Fever 2” DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0

“Cabin Fever” Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

“Cabin Fever” undeniably had a twisted, dark sense of humor but West’s “Cabin fever 2” takes it several steps further, practically pitching his sequel as a comedic spoof of ’80s teen horror flicks. He moves the action to a high school and keeps the flesh-eating action in place, but his tone is severely tongue-in-cheek from the animated opening credits to exaggerated faculty members to the appearances by over-the-top personalities like Mark Borchardt,...

[DVD Review] Cabin Fever
The work of Eli Roth provides something of an interesting litmus test. His horror films are regularly out-grossed by his Saw competitors, a fact which is reflected by the general popular appraisal of his films (the first Hostel has a 5.7 rating on IMDb.com, whereas the first Saw has a 7.7). On the other hand, the man has garnered an auspicious group of industry fans (which includes Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, John Landis, and Robert Rodriguez), whom are all too happy to continue to fund and support his work. For better or worse, Roth’s career began with Cabin Fever, and he has not deviated from the trajectory that it set him on since. While the film showcases everything that makes him a technically proficient director, it also shows with gale force everything that makes him unpalatable to a larger audience.

The set up is familiar,...

Monthly Movie Preview – December 2009
This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.

First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.

Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

But, Up In the Air...

Critics Consensus: Everybody's Fine Is Just Ok
This week at the movies, we've got a fractured family (Everybody's Fine, starring Robert De Niro and Drew Barrymore); a sibling rivalry (Brothers, starring Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal); an inside job (Armored, starring Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne); and vampire hilarity (Transylmania, starring Patrick Cavanaugh and James DeBello). What do the critics have to say? Sometimes a film contains such good acting that one is willing to overlook its other faults. One example might be Jim Sheridan's Brothers, a film critics say often works despite being frequently overwrought. Robert De Niro has an intensity and presence that shines through...
