Did John Mulaney Lie About This Classic ‘SNL’ Moment?
Image
John Mulaney never really came across as the most truthful of comedians. After all, his closing bit in the breakthrough special New in Town was all about how he falsified medical symptoms in order to get prescription drugs, which plays a lot differently now. He also told a story about how he once told a classmate that he wasn’t at a party that got out of hand, when, in fact, he was, you know, like a liar.

But we all trusted Mulaney when it came to stories about his time at Saturday Night Live. Specifically, in his special Kid Gorgeous at Radio City, Mulaney recounted how his favorite instance of an SNL host introducing a musical guest was when “the great Sir Patrick Stewart” threw it to popular hip-hop group “Salt… N-pepa!”

“Like he was surprised by Pepa,” Mulaney explained. “Like minutes before they had been like, ‘Sir Patrick...

Patrick Stewart sprinkled on the Salt and... Pepa, and John Mulaney can't forget it
Image
Pass the salt and… pepa! How could we forget about this one? Sir Patrick Stewart, then still merely Patrick Stewart, hosted Saturday Night Live. It was February 5, 1994, the 12th episode of the long-running show’s 19th season. As part of his hosting responsibilities, he had to introduce the episode’s musical act, in this case Salt-N-Pepa, the popular hip-hop group led by Cheryl James (Salt) and Sandra Denton (Pepa). Stewart, best known at the time as the super-serious Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation and as a respected Shakespearean performer, seemed particularly jazzed, and almost giddy, to introduce both of their performances that evening.

And, between Stewart’s evident excitement, his very British accent, and the singular word “Pepa,” the actor delivered introductions that live on in people’s minds and… on the internet, which forgets absolutely nothing. Which brings us to February 16, 2025, when Stewart took to...

American Music Awards: 7 Things You Didn’t See on TV
Image
While almost three dozen fan-voted honors were given out at the American Music Awards on Monday, only a small handful made it to the two-hour live broadcast — the same can be said for the best moments of the evening. The Hollywood Reporter was there for the celebrity run-ins, secret conversations and head-scratching sights before and during the ceremony in Sin City.

JLo’s Encore

After an opening medley where she danced for six minutes to 23 hit songs and engaged in sultry smooches with both male and female dancers, Jennifer Lopez wrapped a night of hosting at the 2025 American Music Awards by unveiling plans for a new Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. As the curtain fell, she announced via Instagram that “Up All Night Live in Las Vegas” will open New Year’s Eve week with four shows and an additional eight in March 2026. This long-rumored return...

This Bizarro MTV Short Film Was Turned Into The Network's First Movie
Image
MTV was best known for its music videos, of course, but credit should be given for its initiative in promoting and exhibiting short films. In between its Missing Persons videos and "Weird Al" Yankovic videos, the channel would present the (often strange) art of rising filmmakers and animators, just to add some variety to its 24-hour programming. It wasn't uncommon to turn on MTV in 1991 and see full-bore live-action short and bizarro animated bumpers in between blocks of music videos. Many new artists found their toehold within the cracks. Eventually, MTV launched "Liquid Television" as a showcase for its animated ventures, with its live-action shorts remaining randomly scattered throughout.

John Payson's live-action short film "Joe's Apt." first debuted on MTV in 1992, and it caught everyone's eye, mostly because it was kinda gross. In the short, Mark Rosenthal played Joe, an average dude living in a filthy New York apartment...

‘Bandidos’ Season 2 Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Was Regina Arrested?
Image
Bandidos Season 2’s ending was centered around the titular group trying to retrieve a precious jewel called the Tear of Fire from the clutches of Regina. Why? Well, the story goes something like this. Lili, whose original name was Carlota, was Regina’s stepsister, and the former had killed Regina’s biological father and gone on the run. After discovering her whereabouts, Regina compelled Lili to use her friends to get the Tear of Fire as a form of reparation. Fearing for their lives, Lili, Miguel, Octavio, Ines, Lucas, and Citlali spent the entire show searching, failing, and then searching some more for this fabled treasure. When they eventually got to the cave that housed the costly piece of stone, Regina, Ariel, Pepa (the gangster who belonged to the Mayan tribe that was the rightful owner of the Tear of Fire), and the landowner whose wife had cheated on him...

‘Bandidos’ Season 2 Netflix Review: Treasure Hunting Series Suffers Sophomore Slump Due To Lili
Image
Stories about treasure hunting are awesome. Way before I was introduced to the world of movies, I was reading Treasure Island, Sinbad the Sailor, and the purposefully anticlimactic Sonar Kella. Then there were the Tintin comics and the amazing 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin, that absolutely enthralled me. Mackenna’s Gold and King Solomon’s Mines were brought up in every conversation with my parents so many times that I have lost count at this point. Despite the tacky nature of the franchises, the Lara Croft and The Mummy movies were hugely influential. Animated feature films like Treasure Planet, The Road to El Dorado and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were on repeat in my household. Despite the problematic nature of its lead, there’s no denying the effect that the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films had on me. One Piece, the manga and the anime, is another great example. And even...

Goya Nominations Include Pedro Almodóvar, Julianne Moore & Tilda Swinton, But Leave Their Golden Lion Winner ‘The Room Next Door’ Out Of Best Picture Race
Image
Spain’s Academia de Cine has unveiled its list of nominations for the 39th Goya Awards, the country’s equivalent to the Oscar. Leading the field is Marcel Barrena’s biographical drama El 47, with 14 mentions. It’s followed by thriller La Infiltrada (Undercover) at 13.

Also in the mix is Segundo Premio (Saturn Return) with 11 nods. The movie about real-life rock band Los Planetas was Spain’s submission for the International Feature Oscar, though it did not make AMPAS’ shortlist cut which was revealed yesterday.

Meanwhile, Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, The Room Next Door, scored 10 nominations including Best Director and a pair of Best Actress nods for Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. It did not surface in the Goyas’ Best Picture race, despite taking the top prize Golden Lion in Venice earlier this year, his first ever top A-list festival prize.

The Goyas will be handed out on February 8 in Granada.

I'm Convinced Buck & Bobby Fans Are Overlooking 9-1-1's Best Relationship

Quick Links Bobby Nash Helps Eddie Through His Grief Both Bobby and Eddie Avoid Anger Through Self-Destruction By Season 5 of 9-1-1, Eddie Diaz is in Disarray Bobby and Eddie's Stories Are Too Similar to Ignore

ABC's 9-1-1 follows the personal and work lives of the firefighters who work under Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) at Firehouse 118, as well as their LAPD counterparts, like Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett) and the people who work at 9-1-1 dispatch. As a longtime lover of procedurals, even with all of their pro-police problems, 9-1-1 has become one of my favorite shows. I particularly love that Peter Krause has taken to referring to the show as "a comic book come to life about first responders," which is really the only way to refer to a show with epic events like a tsunami that takes out the Santa Monica Pier, a sinking cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean,...

Encanto Live-Action Images Imagine Mirabel, The Madrigal Family & Their Magical House In Stunning Detail
Wilmer Valderrama, Angie Cepeda, María Cecilia Botero, Carolina Gaitan, Stephanie Beatriz, Diane Guerrero, Adassa, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Rhenzy Feliz, Jess Darrow, and Mauro Castillo in Encanto (2021)
Instagram user Arada gives audiences an idea of what a live-action Encanto movie could look like with images of Mirabel, the Madrigals, and their Casita. Encanto was a massive success for Disney when it was released in November 2021. While it struggled in theaters due to the pandemic, it blew up once it hit Disney+ that December. Despite Encanto's success, Disney has been surprisingly mum about its future, and Encanto 2 has not been announced at this time. However, Disney has shown its commitment to the franchise in other ways an Encanto ride is in the works at Animal Kingdom.

While Disney may not have announced a follow-up to Encanto yet, that hasn't stopped Instagram user Arada from imagining a live-action version of the story. The account's art depicts key members of the Madrigal family: Mirabel, Abuela, Isabela, Bruno, Pepa, Luisa, Antonio, and Dolores. Many images feature the family's beloved Casita,...

Encanto: Every Character's Power Ranked
Image
In the magical world of Encanto, each member of the Madrigal family is gifted with a unique power. Some are more useful than others, however. Judging how powerful a gift is in Encanto also means taking into account the setting. Since the Madrigal's aren't superheroes, how useful the power is to the inhabitants of their village is also an important factor. While some family members, like Pepa, have abilities that seem incredibly powerful on the surface, their gifts are also determined by their emotions, which limits their use somewhat.

Disney's Encanto features the Madrigal family, who live in a magical house in a secluded Colombian village, and in Encanto, powers are also a part of the Madrigal family. In the Disney animated movie, each member of the Madrigals is granted their own power with the help of a magical candle and a magical house that opens a door to their...

Dolores Was Secretly The Villain Of Encanto - Theory Explained
Image
In Encanto, Mirabel stands out for not having a magical gift like her family, causing tension with Abuela Alma. While Dolores is suspected of being the villain in the story, the lack of a traditional antagonist makes Encanto unique. Abuela, with her controlling nature, comes closest to being the antagonist by stifling her family's individual growth for the sake of tradition.

Disney's Encanto, which tells the story of the magical Madrigals, doesn't have a bad guy, but one theory speculates Dolores was the secret villain. Mirabel Madrigal is the only Madrigal family member in Encanto who doesn't get a magical gift. Unfortunately, this strains her relationship with Abuela Alma, who is worried about losing the miracle and letting her family and their village down, so she doesn't always treat Mirabel well. However, when the family's magical house begins to crack, Mirabel's lack of powers drives her to figure out the...

Here is what Yogesh said to Ken Jennings, and how the Jeopardy! host got back at him for it.

Yogesh Corrects Ken Jennings On Camera

Yogesh was competing in Jeopardy! The Masters when he stopped host Ken Jennings and corrected his pronunciation of a word. The word was “Everest.”

The clue was: “In 1823, this eponymous man was elevated to superintendent of the survey of India.” When Yogesh answered “Everest,” he pronounced it as “Ee-ver-est.” Ken said that Yogesh was right and pronounced it as “Ever-est.” Yogesh immediately fired back, “He pronounced it Ee-ver-est.”

Ken just chuckled at the clapback. However, Ken got...

Will Smith was ‘most terrified' on his 'one and only date' with Pepa of Salt-n-Pepa
Image
Hollywood star Will Smith invited the iconic hip-hop duo Salt-n-Pepa on his Class of 1988 podcast for a chat about their ascension towards rap superstardom in the 1980s, and to reflect on how he was rather smitten with Sandra “Pepa” Denton, 57, at the time.

On the episode, Smith and the rap star reminisced about the “one and only date” they went on together, and how “terrified” the Fresh Prince himself was throughout the experience, reports People magazine.

Smith said that they went on a date “sometime in early 1988” after he had been crushing on the performer for quite some time.

“I always had a thing for Sandy, but she was always dating somebody else,” the Grammy winner shared. “Now, she was single. We were both going to be in Los Angeles at the same time, so Imma shoot my shot.”

Missy Elliott became the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Elliott was the final inductee of Friday night’s ceremony. Encanto's Core Theme Makes Several Spinoffs Possible
Image
Encanto's exploration of generational trauma makes it a viable option for a sequel or spinoff, as audiences of all ages resonate with the story's themes of expectations and trauma. Each member of the Madrigal family in Encanto handles generational trauma differently, providing ample opportunity for spinoffs focusing on characters like Isabella or Luisa. The most impactful spinoff would be one that delves into the experiences of Bruno, Julieta, and Pepa, Abuela's triplets, as they were the first to receive magical gifts and were deeply affected by Abuela's trauma.

Encanto cleanly wrapped up its story so that a sequel wouldn't be necessary, but with the Disney film's unique central themes, a spinoff could always be possible. Mirabel's story may not have been a box office success (thanks to its 2021 release), but the film's societal impact speaks for itself. Something about a story that outlines the damages of generational trauma and...

Ji.hlava Award Winner Pepa Lubojacki Calls for Compassion in ‘If Pigeons Turned to Gold’: ‘You Can Love People Also as Addicts’
Image
Pepa Lubojacki’s “If Pigeons Turned to Gold” was named the most promising European project at Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival.

The Czech-Slovak co-production follows four family members, including Lubojacki’s own brother and cousins, unhoused for over a decade and struggling with addiction.

“I don’t use the word ‘homeless,’ because it has really negative connotations. Once you say ‘unhoused resident,’ it implies they are still a part of this society,” says the director.

“At times, I felt guilty I was better off than my brother. I wanted to rip off a part of me and just give it to him. But it’s not another depressing story, because I am fed up with them. There was always love in this film.”

Granted post-production services valued at €15,000 and €5,000 – courtesy of Upp and Soundsquare – the Ji.hlava New Visions Award winner is produced by Claw’s Wanda Kaprálová and Klára Mamojková.

Patrick Stewart Thinks His SNL Episode Is A Total Disaster – Except For Two Bits
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Back in the late '80s and early '90s, the success of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" skyrocketed Sir Patrick Stewart into newfound fame. Eventually, that fame would reach even greater heights after he took on the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the "X-Men" film franchise. But that wouldn't be until 2000. Years before that, as "The Next Generation" was coming to an end, Stewart suddenly found himself venturing away from the final frontier into new territory.

As Stewart recounted in his recently released memoir, "Making It So," his pop culture fame resulted in many wanting to see the actor play against type and shed his "Shakespearean eloquence," as he puts it. That included the honor of hosting "Saturday Night Live," a coveted opportunity that isn't afforded to every actor out there. Unfortunately, when Stewart looks back on the...

How ‘Encanto: Live at the Hollywood Bowl’ Came Together in 72 Hours
Image
Transforming Disney’s award-winning animated feature “Encanto” into a live experience at the Hollywood Bowl in front of an audience of 17,000 people was no easy feat, with factors such as the pandemic, limited access to the venue and unexpected weather conditions all in play. But the production team, cast and crew pulled it off in under 72 hours, delivering a Broadway-quality experience.

Unlike a Broadway show, the original voice cast, scores of dancers and production team did not have the luxury of rehearsing at the Bowl. Gabe Turner, executive producer of the event, said, “We could only gain access to the Bowl for four days before we were due to welcome our dancers, orchestra and cast into the space.”

“This meant we really only had 72 hours where we had everyone in the same place, rehearsing and stepping through numbers before we were due to open doors,” said producer Sally Wood.

Encanto Theory: Mirabel's Lack Of Gift Is Due To Abuela's Mistakes
Image
The biggest mystery in Disney’s Encanto is why Mirabel didn't get a gift, and a theory suggests it’s all due to Abuela's previous mistakes. Years ago, while fleeing from an armed conflict in Colombia, Alma Madrigal a.k.a. Abuela (María Cecilia Botero) lost her husband and was left alone with her baby triplets. Through an unexplained miracle, Alma's candle attained magical qualities, keeping them safe from their pursuers and building a sentient house — Casita — for them. Since then, the candle has burned and protected Casita, the family, and the whole town, while also granting special gifts to each Madrigal descendant, except for Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz).

Being the only one without a gift made Mirabel feel left out of the family and led her to discover many family secrets, especially those about her mysterious uncle Bruno (John Leguizamo). Surprisingly, Mirabel wasn't granted a gift like those...

Every Deleted Scene In Encanto
Image
While the movie, Encanto, shocked with its themes of generational trauma, there are four deleted scenes released that would have provided different perspectives on the Madrigal family. In the film, Alma and her husband, Pedro, had to run away from armed forces attacking their village in Colombia, but Pedro was killed before Alma found the magical Encanto, a safe place to raise her family. Each of her children gained powers. However, while most their children, Isabela, Luisa, Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio, Mirabel was the only one who didn't, leading to her becoming an outsider in her own family.

With its complex yet relatable themes, Encanto has earned widespread praise, as well as support for Encanto 2 or another spinoff. Encanto earned more than $250 million globally (via Box Office Mojo) and won the respective categories for Best Animated Picture at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, among other accolades. Since the movie's release,...

Last Night, the Grammys Turned Back Into an Awards Show
Image
“Don’t even think of it as an awards show,” Trevor Noah said at the Grammys last year. “This is a concert where we give out awards!” That was the Grammy-night game plan for the past two years — emphasizing live music, letting the performers run wild, cutting out all the dead weight that makes award shows boring. That’s why the 2021 and 2022 bashes were the best ever for Music’s Biggest Night, by an absurd margin. But this year, the Grammys turned back into an awards show — too much shtick,...

Questlove
The 2023 Grammy Awards honor the 50th anniversary of hip hop this year with a tribute performance co-curated by Questlove and label Mass Appeal. Before the event, Questlove teased audiences would see “some of the biggest names from the genre coming together to celebrate hip-hop history — its past, its present, its future,” and the performance surely didn’t disappoint. Following the introduction of the Dr. Dre Impact Award, LL Cool J introduced the tribute performance, which began with Black Thought taking the stage. Soon after came Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, then Run Dmc and LL Cool J himself (with a rapid wardrobe change). The performance transitioned with some DJ scratches from Jazzy Jeff before Salt N Pepa took the stage. Rakim spat a few bars; then Public Enemy took the stage before passing it off to LL and Thought once again. The Ghetto Boyz’s “Straight from da Ghetto...

First Graders Pick Favorite Madrigal Gift In Adorable Encanto Homework
Image
A first-grade teacher reveals the adorable results of a recent homework assignment in which her students were tasked with choosing their favorite Madrigal gift from Encanto. Disney's Academy Award-winning animation, Encanto, tells the story of the Madrigals, a Colombian family blessed by magic. Each of them boasts a unique gift, except Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), who is the exception to this long-standing family tradition. Encanto became an instant hit with audiences and critics upon its 2021 release, with the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" quickly becoming a global sensation.

With Encanto having become so beloved, first-grade teacher Annie Hendricks recently set her students a homework project inspired by the film. Now, she has shared the adorable results on social media.

Encanto Hidden Detail Makes Bruno & Dolores Different From Every Madrigal
Image
Bruno and Dolores are different from the rest of the Madrigal family, and one detail in Encanto illustrates how. The 2021 Disney movie turned the Madrigal family members into some of the more popular Disney characters in recent years. The story may have revolved around Mirabel, but the other magical members of the Madrigal family also played prominent roles. This includes Mirabel's future-seeing uncle Bruno and her super-hearing cousin Dolores, who each had various opportunities to use their powers.

Neither Bruno nor Dolores are the center of Encanto's story, but the movie gives audiences plenty of insight into their lives thanks to the exploration of the Madrigal family. The animated Disney film takes time to explore a bit about the family history and how each Madrigal family member gets unique powers to help the family and surrounding community. This is possible thanks to a transformation that takes place when a Madrigal...

‘That ’90s Show’ Soundtrack: All the Songs in the Netflix Series
Topher Grace
With almost 20 years since the last episode of “That 70’s Show” aired, Netflix has revived this instant classic from the dead. “That ’90’s Show,” streaming on Netflix, pays homage to the original – delivering a fresh yet nostalgic spin-off, where original fans will find something to like.

All of the same actors and characters have returned for the spinoff and deliver the same brand of warm-hearted, light humor that we once came to love. This is nothing short of a miracle, with even cast members themselves doubting the producers could make it happen, with Topher Grace stating in an interview – “It would be so hard to bring that crew together. For me, I’d do it if no one ever saw it. Just ’cause it would be great to hang out with them for a week or something.”

“That 90’s Show” is set in the summer of 1995 and centers on Leia,...

Mirabel's Secret Encanto Power Is Deeper Than You Realize
Image
Mirabel is the only Madrigal in Encanto without powers, but she has a secret ability that is more significant to the family. Abuela Madrigal was blessed with a miracle after the death of her husband, and the magic created the town of Encanto. From then on, each member of the Madrigal family was given a powerful gift from the miracle, except for Mirabel, who was seemingly given no power at her candle ceremony.

Given the town reveres the Madrigals and appreciates all the help they provide with their gifts, it might seem improbable that the town may grow to fear the magical family. There are darker connotations to Encanto's characters’ gifts, however, which could lead to the town fearing them the same way they did Bruno. Mirabel's lack of powers is a crucial factor behind the citizens in Encanto never reaching that point. In fact, Mirabel not having a gift...
