As fans get excited for Starfleet Academy, one famed Star Trek star is detailing how his character will be changing for the show!

As Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues on its third season, fans are already looking ahead to Starfleet Academy. The upcoming series picks up from the end of Discovery as in the 32nd century, a rebuilt Federation is forming the first new Starfleet Academy class in a hundred years.

The show will have a fresh-faced cast as the cadets with some veterans mixed in. That includes Oscar winner Holly Hunter as Nahla Ake, the chancellor of the Academy. There are also going to be appearances from Discovery stars such as Tig Notaro and Oded Fehr.

In development since Kurtzman’s original deal with CBS back in 2018, the series has gone through many iterations and timelines before settling on the future setting used since Discovery’s third season.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set to begin its freshman term early next year, and has already been renewed for a sophomore season. But how long will it take before the series graduates? Collider's Steve Weintraub spoke with the show's cast and crew about the show's long-term academic prospects at San Diego Comic Con this weekend. The series takes place in the 32nd century after the events of “Star Trek: Discovery,” with Starfleet relaunching the titular educational institution outside of San Francisco after the Federation’s absence on Earth for more than 120 years.

“We look at the generation now that is inheriting all of this division and all these major issues,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said on the Hall H stage. “We wanted to create a show that anchored us back to [Gene] Rodneyberry’s essential vision of hope. Star Trek’slatest TV series doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but ahead of a July 26 panel at San Diego Comic-Con, several new photos from the set of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy have been revealed. The series, starring Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, and a slew of young “cadets,” is set to premiere on Paramount+ sometime in 2026.

Per Entertainment Weekly,Starfleet Academy’s showrunner Alex Kurtzman is also teasing what Trek fans can expect from the new series when it eventually does debut. The series has already received an order for a second season.

In an exciting reveal, fans get a glimpse at Giamatti’s villainous new character. “He had such a great time putting on the makeup. He loved sitting in the chair,” Kurtzman said of Giamatti. “We were worried it was going to take too much time, but he said, ‘No, I love it. It really lets me drop into the character.

Paul Giamatti is a big Star Trek fan, and he finally got the chance to live out his dream when he joined the cast of Starfleet Academy. Star Trek franchise producer Alex Kurtzman said they started seriously considering Giamatti when the actor revealed that he always wanted to play a Klingon during The Holdovers press tour. “We looked at each other and we went, ‘Is he kidding?! Well, let’s call his agent and find out,’” Kurtzman said. “Within, I think, less than an hour, [his agent] called back and said he would love to meet.”

The series tells the story of David (played by Michael Iskander) and his rise to become a powerful and celebrated king of Israel.
