Writing with a specific actor in mind is not unheard of in Hollywood. Sometimes it’s a matter of circumstance that the right people behind the show want to make sure they have a key player among their cast. When it came to the upcoming Paramount+ Star Trek spin-off, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, showrunner Alex Kurtzman stressed that it was Holly Hunter that the crew wanted to make sure they had on the call sheet. Hunter plays Nahla Ake, a Starfleet Captain and the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy. Kurtzman told Collider’s Steve Weintraub at San Diego Comic Con that Hunter was “the voice in our heads” during the show’s development. He explains:
"So we wrote this part for Holly Hunter before we knew Holly Hunter. And as we were developing it, because I am, like, an obsessive fan of all of her films. I’ve never told you this,...

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set to begin its freshman term early next year, and has already been renewed for a sophomore season. But how long will it take before the series graduates? Star Trek's newest series, Starfleet Academy, will open its doors early next year. But before that happens, Collider's Steve Weintraub was on the scene at San Diego Comic Con to talk to the show's cast and crew. The 1999 film, The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr is on both formal and informal lists of importance. The 26-year-old film is considered a classic for many millennials, even with it only sporting a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans look past the 90s CGI and instead focus on the story and iconcism of Fraser and Weisz performances as Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan. Now, those same fans have allowed the film to join an important list on the social media platform, Letterboxd. According to a social media post, the film has now joined the One Million Watched Club. The list is as the name implies: it's been marked as "watched" by at least 1,000,000 Letterboxd users. The logline for The Mummy is as follows:
"The Mummy is a rousing, suspenseful and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925. Stumbling upon an ancient tomb,...

After almost three decades, Brendan Fraser has reunited with his former co-stars from his over $400 million blockbuster hit. As a recent Oscar winner whose career has seen a major resurgence following his Academy Award for Best Actor in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale in 2023, Fraser hasn’t lost sight of the roles that made him a star to begin with.
The Mummy signalled Fraser’s true breakout success as a leading man, following earlier appearances in films like Encino Man and George of the Jungle. As the beginning of a major franchise that remade a 1932 classic, Fraser reprised his role as Rick O’Connell in the sequels The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The 1999 cinematic classic, The Mummy, is an iconic piece of film — and for good reason. Everyone has their own logic behind what made the Stephen Sommers-helmed adventure flick such a hit, but up there at the top is certainly the performances carried out by its leading cast, which included Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr. The legends about what Fraser went through and what damage he did to his body in order to bring the blockbuster to screens could make a movie of their own. Now, thanks to one of his castmates, we have a better understanding of how things ended up that way for the actor.
During a reunion panel for The Mummy at Fan Expo Denver, which was hosted by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, Fehr answered a fan question regarding the most difficult part about the stunts and over-the-top action sequences. Pointing to Fraser’s legacy,...

Brendan Fraser has finally spoken out about why Tom Cruise’s The Mummy crashed and burned, and it’s just in time because a brand new reboot is on the way with Lee Cronin at its helm. We still remember Fraser’s 1999 classic fondly because it was such a thrilling adventure.
But the 2017 reboot featuring Cruise was widely considered an infamous misfire. So, now as we gear up for the next chapter, it’s worth digging into why Fraser’s movie worked while the Top Gun star’s didn’t, and what the upcoming version is promising to bring us.

If someone asked you to name a movie about the classic Universal monster The Mummy, then chances are thoughts would instantly turn to Brendan Fraser’s much-loved combination of Indiana Jones and…well, more Indiana Jones. The 1999 action adventure with a touch of horror is still one of the most successful movies to feature the ancient Egyptian creature, and that means Fraser is best positioned to share his view on why Tom Cruise’s 2017 version didn’t just create a box office bomb, but killed the franchise it was supposed to kick off.

Before The Mummy launched the Dark Universe into a coffin-sized crater at the box office, it was Brendan Fraser’s swashbuckling 1999 version that had fans clinging to their seats — and loving every second of it. At Fan Expo Denver, The Mummy cast — Fraser, John Hannah, Patricia Velasquez, and Oded Fehr — reunited on stage, moderated by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, to look back at the franchise’s enduring appeal. Naturally, the conversation turned to Universal’s failed attempt to build a cinematic monster universe with The Mummy (2017), Dr. Jekyll, The Invisible Man(almost), and…well, that’s about it.
When asked if any sort of crossover was ever on the table during their era — possibly even one with Hugh Jackman’sVan Helsing — Fraser made it clear that whatever the ambitions of the newer version were, they didn’t quite understand the assignment. “I really don’t know. I know Tom Cruise...

From Ghostface to a paranormal DJ? Deadline reports that the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) are teaming up with Paul Giamatti for a biopic about the late Art Bell. Best known as the founder and original host of Coast to Coast Am, Bell would field unscreened calls from all sorts of people, listening to stories of alien abduction, conspiracy theories, strange creatures, and just about everything you could imagine.
According to Deadline, several studios, including Universal, Amazon, and Warner Bros., are bidding on the Art Bell biopic. Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves are writing the script. This is a bit of a different project from the team that has given us Ready or Not, Abigail, and two Scream movies, but it has the potential to be quite interesting. Plus, I could watch Paul Giamatti do just about anything.
