The Carters: Hurts to Love You Review: Angel Carter’s Courageous Testament to Surviving Family Dysfunction
Image
In an era where streaming platforms increasingly mine celebrity trauma for content, “The Carters: Hurts to Love You” arrives as something different—a documentary that refuses to exploit its subjects’ pain for entertainment value. Soleil Moon Frye’s two-part Paramount+ series centers on Angel Carter Conrad, the surviving twin of Aaron Carter, who died in 2022 at just 34. Through Angel’s eyes, we witness the systematic destruction of a family that produced two of pop music’s biggest stars: Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys and his younger brother Aaron, whose solo career began when he was barely old enough to tie his shoes.

The Carter family story reads like a cautionary tale written in real time—Nick’s meteoric rise with one of the world’s biggest boy bands, Aaron’s push into stardom at age 10, and the devastating losses that followed: Leslie Carter in 2012, Aaron in 2022, and Bobbie Jean Carter...

‘The Carters’ Director on Her Bond With Angel and Addiction Stigma: “She Knew That Aaron, in His Healthiest State, Would Want to Help Others”
Image
Soleil Moon Frye, director of The Carters: Hurts to Love You, hopes others will see a piece of themselves in the Carter family story.

That was her mission, she tells The Hollywood Reporter when setting out to make the film on the family’s battle with mental health and addiction issues.

Frye’s task was also, she says, to help Angel, twin sister of the late Aaron Carter, share her truth after losing three siblings to addiction. Aaron passed from an accidental drowning after taking drugs in November 2022; Leslie and Bobbie Jean (B.J.) from drug overdoses, as well, in 2012 and 2023.

The Paramount+ documentary, streaming Apr. 15, utilizes a wealth of archival footage from home videos and tapes of siblings Nick, Aaron, Leslie, Bobbie Jean and Angel to offer up an intimate glimpse into how the Carter’s dealt with global fame. The two-part doc tracks Nick’s Backstreet Boys stardom,...

‘The Carters’ Director Soleil Moon Frye on Capturing Angel and Nick Carter’s First Conversation About Losing Aaron, Going ‘All In’ on Mental Health Awareness
Image
Soleil Moon Frye knew Aaron Carter when he was just a teenager. “He was just this vivacious, bubbly, bright, beautiful light,” she says of the late singer.

When she met Angel Carter Conrad, Aaron’s twin, a few years ago, they connected immediately.

“She had already lost two of her siblings and her father, and in the process of our journey, lost her third sibling,” Frye says. “From the moment that I met her, I was blown away by her courage, her strength, her grace, her love and her beautiful heart. And I really wanted to create a safe space for her to share her story. And I remember saying to the team, ‘If you let me make a documentary that, at its core, is around mental health awareness and addiction told through this incredible, moving story of Angel and the tragedies that her family had gone through, I’m all in.

Wes Craven's 10 Most Underrated Movies
Image
Wes Craven is widely known for shaping the horror genre with hits like Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, but his lesser-known works reveal a filmmaker with a more nuanced approach to storytelling. Although many of his movies didn't achieve the same level of success, they highlight the director-writer-producer's ability to explore deeper themes and push the limits of genre filmmaking, particularly horror movies.

Craven’s work outside his most famous titles often explored darker, more experimental ideas, combining horror with psychologically intense themes. Some of his most underrated movies are not merely about shocking and scaring the viewer; they also examine human nature, fear, and the consequences of societal issues. Titles such as Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and The People Under the Stairs demonstrate Craven’s potential to innovate and challenge expectations, all while continuing to offer a still-fresh perspective on what horror can be. With much-deserved praise for his most popular works,...

‘Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Ami Dolenz, Andrew Robinson, Soleil Moon Frye, J. Trevor Edmond, Hill Harper, Alexander Polinsky, Mark McCracken, Steve Kanaly, Gloria Hendry | Written by Constantine & Ivan Chachornia | Directed by Jeff Burr

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings was originally released in the UK at a time when I was heavily getting into horror yet was, legally, still too young to rent 18-rated titles from the local video shop (a shop which to this day I credit with the formative years of my movie tastes). It was also at a time when Jeff Burr was being hailed, at least in some corners of the UK and US horror press, as the future of the genre. After all, he had helmed the fan-favourite Vincent Price-starring horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream and then the very successful sequel The Stepfather 2, before hitting the “big time” as director on the third film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

The Correct Order To Watch The Pumpkinhead Horror Franchise
Image
Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss.

Winston also directed a few notable projects. He directed the music videos for Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Winston also helmed the amusement parks-only 3-D "Terminator" interquel "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time" in '96. Winston only ever directed two feature films: the very, very, very odd cop-teams-up-with-a-gnome comedy "A Gnome Named Gnorm" in 1990, and the horrifying monster revenge thriller "Pumpkinhead" in 1988.

Sean Penn’s Core Raises $1.4M at Pre-Oscars Benefit, as Star Warns Against “Growing Disaster of Division” in U.S.
Image
Amid a very busy week of Oscar events, Sean Penn’s relief organization Core took a moment to shift the focus from toasting this year’s top films to raising money for ongoing crises around the world.

At Core’s Pre-Oscars Benefit on Tuesday — sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter and Dodge — $1.4 million was raised to finance the group’s humanitarian work, with support from a star-studded group of attendees. Penn, Core CEO Ann Lee and CAA’s Bryan Lourd (who is both Penn’s agent and a Core board member) co-hosted the event, held at a private residence in Laurel Canyon, while Bill Burr served as the night’s emcee.

“This is such a wonderful organization — I’ve done so many benefits in my stand-up career where the charity was B.S., like 10 percent of 10 percent went to something,” Burr told guests at the beginning of the night. “This is actually...

‘Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings’ at 30: Fun Sequel Delivers Halloween Atmosphere and Gory Kills
Image
Don’t ever assault a possible witch, light her house on fire, dig up her Pet Semetary backyard and use the vial of blood you found next to her book of the dead to resurrect the town monster, K? Equally, don’t ever watch Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings right after watching the original Pumpkinhead. It’s not meant to happen that way.

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings forgoes the typical sequel that actually tries to live up to its predecessor and goes straight for the fourth-to-seventh sequel package. It does not pass go nor collect $200 but rather heads straight to video and parks its barely running, smoke engulfed 1993 Ford truck on Camp Avenue. Many hate it for that reason. I understand.

I also happen to enjoy the ever lovin’ shit out of it.

While Stan Winston’s Pumpkinhead featured amazing practical effects and an original monster that was frightening as hell,...

Soleil Moon Frye, Melissa Joan Hart Team Up for Lifetime’s Latest Bid to Blow Up Commercial Breaks
Image
Pharmaceutical giant Gsk is going to dramatic lengths to get consumers thinking about the challenges of Meningitis B.

Rather than pepper Lifetime’s TV schedule with traditional ads about the disease, Gsk has commissioned a short film on the subject, in which actor Soleil Moon Frye talks to parents and experts. Her efforts will show up in a three-minute vignette that appears during certain Lifetime movies; a 17-minute film made available via a bespoke digital site; and in “snackable” lengths via social and other venues. Melissa Joan Hart, who was, like Frye, a popular child actor and is a regular in Lifetime’s movies, will also appear in the vignettes, which will appear on digital outlets first and then on the cable network starting June 25.

“This isn’t a manufactured moment,” says Maura O’Donovan, vice president of ad sales partnerships at A+E Networks, in an interview. “It really is something that is authentic.

“Roger Corman Presents”: Remember When Corman and Showtime Made Cult Cinema Together in the 1990s?
Image
For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.

Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.

Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (1994) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Kerry Remsen in Pumpkinhead (1988)
A couple months ago, we looked back at the 1988 film Pumpkinhead with an episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series. Now we’re moving on to an examination of the 1994 sequel Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (watch it Here) – and since this isn’t exactly one of the most popular sequels around, we’re covering it in an episode of our The Black Sheep video series. To find out why we think Pumpkinhead II deserves more appreciation, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by Jeff Burr from a screenplay written by Constantine Chachornia and Ivan Chachornia, Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings has the following synopsis: In a small Kansas town in 1958, a group of teenagers torture and kill a disfigured orphan named Tommy. After 35 years, another gang of teens robs the cabin of an old witch. Using some blood and a spell taken from her house, the...

This article contains Twin Peaks: The Return spoilers
