The 12 Best Marvel And DC Animated Shows, Ranked
Image
Live-action superhero movies may dominate the box office, but there's something to be said about adapting a beloved hero into an animated television series. A 22-episode season (remember those?) allows for a greater variety of stories to be told week to week (instead of waiting years on end to get a sequel). And while Marvel has (somewhat) perfected the idea of a cinematic universe, an animated series can dive into the wilder, often stranger mythos of these characters without getting bogged down in questions like, "Will this alienate a wider audience?"

With that in mind, it's no wonder why there have been so many acclaimed DC and Marvel cartoons over the years. Some might say these animated adaptations are the definitive source for these characters, perfectly translating them into another medium without losing what made them special in the first place. With an equal representation from each of the big...

Two decades after ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’ Bryan Cranston could finally win his first Emmy for a comedy series
Image
Bryan Cranston won four Emmys for playing a power-hungry drug kingpin on AMC's landmark drama series Breaking Bad. But when he's not masquerading as the ruthless "one who knocks," the actor also enjoys showing off his comedic side.

Two decades ago, he received a trio of Emmy nominations for his role as Hal, the carefree husband and father on Malcolm in the Middle. He also earned laughs playing dentist Tim Whatley on Seinfeld, therapist Dr. Templeton on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and a heightened version of himself on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Now, he's yucking it up as The Studio's Griffin Mill, the outlandish CEO of Continental Studios, who's never met a psychedelic mushroom he didn't like. Cranston is nominated in Best Comedy Guest Actor alongside last year's winner, Jon Bernthal as Michael Berzatto for The Bear, plus four people from The Studio who are playing comedic versions of themselves: Dave Franco,...

Image
About a year ago, Ray Romano and Brad Garrett teamed up on Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, cruising through questions until they hit a wall at the $250,000 mark. The question stumped them, and it was all about a Christopher Nolan movie.

Nolan’s a big deal—most folks love his work, from The Dark Knight to Dunkirk. But when Ray and Brad faced a question about one of his iconic films, they couldn’t crack it.The question was: To make a super realistic farm without any CGI, Christopher Nolan planted a 500-acre cornfield in western Canada for which movie?

The options were Oppenheimer, Tenet, Inception, or Interstellar. Brad, joking around, threw out “Field of Dreams” before the choices even popped up.

Via 2waytraffic

Ray thought it was either Inception or Interstellar but leaned toward Inception. They didn’t risk it, walking away with $125,000. The right answer? Interstellar.

Ray Romano & Brad Garrett Lost $250K Over Tricky Christopher Nolan Question
Image
Almost a year ago, Ray Romano and Brad Garrett teamed up for an episode of Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The two were doing great, making their way up the ladder without much trouble, until they reached the $250,000 question. That’s when things got tricky.

The question they faced was: “To create a realistic-looking farm without using CGI, Christopher Nolan had a 500-acre cornfield planted in western Canada for which of his films?”

Via 2waytraffic

The options were Oppenheimer, Tenet, Inception, and Interstellar. Before the answers even popped up, Brad Garrett joked, “Field of Dreams.” Romano thought it was either C or D. But instead of risking it, the two decided to walk away with $125,000. If they had to guess, they would have gone with Inception. Unfortunately, the right answer was Interstellar.

Christopher Nolan, the director of Interstellar, is famous for avoiding CGI whenever possible. Known for his...

A Live-Action Disney Superhero Movie Was A Parody Of A Beloved Superman Character
Image
I need my fellow Gen-Xers to chime in:

"When criminals in this world appear / And break the laws that they should fear / And frighten all who see or hear / The cry goes up both far and near / for Underdog!"

Those are the lyrics to the theme song for the 1964 animated series "Underdog," a series about a canine named Shoeshine Boy (Wally Cox) who would occasionally transform into the eponymous flying, super-strong superhero to protect his girlfriend, Polly Purebred (Norma McMillan), from the evils of the mad scientist Simon Bar Sinister (Allen Swift). "Underdog" was in heavy syndication for years, so those of a certain age likely saw multiple episodes without trying. Underdog was an appealing character because he seemed mild-mannered even while in hero mode, and because he always spoke in rhyming couplets. Curiously, Underdog seemed to get his superpowers by popping "super energy pills," which sounds narcotics-adjacent to the modern ear.

Why Elio shouldn't be ignored as another Pixar gem!
Image
The box office failure of Elio shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying one of Pixar’s better recent films!

It seems hard to believe how Pixar has suffered in the last five years. Perhaps it was a poor omen that Onward became the first movie that fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Just one week after the fantasy film opened, movie theaters started shutting down, killing its box office.

That would sadly also send Soul to Disney+ along with Luca, and a bit understandable then, with theaters still mostly closed. However, Turning Red more than deserved a theatrical release rather than going to Disney+, while Lightyear was Pixar’s first major flop.

Elemental had a rough start but grew legs to succeed, while Inside Out 2 was a hit. Sadly, it appears Pixar’s latest, Elio, isn’t going to reach those heights. The sci-fi comedy opened with a weak $30 million,...

Leaning Into Loneliness Saved ‘Elio’
Image
[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for “Elio”].

Pixar’s “Elio” is the latest reminder of how hard it is for original animation to succeed theatrically, especially with the kind of personal stories being made under Pete Docter’s leadership. The storytelling struggle was so difficult, in fact, that it prompted a course correction. First-time director Adrian Molina (“Coco”) departed his alien abduction comedy-adventure to rejoin Lee Unkrich on “Coco 2” as co-director once again. But he tapped “Coco” story artist Madeline Sharafian to succeed him, trusting her to complete his pet project.

Molina was in good hands: Sharafian deeply connected with “Elio’s” theme of loneliness and the search for belonging, and contributed some wonderful early concept drawings. She even stuck up for Molina during meetings with the Brain Trust when there was pushback.

“I remember being in some of those later meetings with Adrian fighting for some of the scenes in the movie,” Sharafian told IndieWire.

Elio: Pixar’s Box-Office Failure Indicates the Saddest Trend After Its Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Disney’s Pixar animated movies are experiencing a decline in popularity, with their original titles failing to score big at the box office. The studio recently released its latest feature film, Elio, in theaters. The sci-fi adventure movie garnered positive reviews from critics, resulting in a strong Rotten Tomatoes score.

However, the critical success did not translate to box office success, which is quickly becoming a sad trend for Pixar movies. As a result, Elio‘s middling box office numbers suggest that original Pixar movies are bound to struggle to draw large numbers. Here’s why that might be bad news for cinema.

Elio‘s impressive Rotten Tomatoes score fails to score big at the box office

Margaret Cho and 5 Other Guests Who Have Talked About Ellen DeGeneres After Career Ending Accusations
Image
For the longest time, Ellen DeGeneres was known to be the lovable talk show host who believed in her “be kind” mantra. Even on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she came across as someone you would want to be friends with. However, she found herself in the middle of a career-ending controversy when she was accused of creating a toxic work environment.

Ex and then-current staff members spoke against Ellen DeGeneres, and many celebrities weighed in on the matter, too. While her defendants are more in number in Tinseltown, there are a few who aren’t on her side, including comedian Margaret Cho, who recently opened up about her experience with the host. Let’s take a look at her words, and then what others have had to say about Ellen DeGeneres.

Peter Boyle, Brad Garrett, Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, and Ray Romano in Everybody Loves Raymond (1996)
Everybody loves Raymond — but not a reboot of it; Brad Garrett shuts down any hope for a follow-up
Peter Boyle, Brad Garrett, Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, and Ray Romano in Everybody Loves Raymond (1996)
When they say everybody loves Raymond, they weren’t kidding. Nine seasons, 200+ episodes and one of the most nominated comedies in Primetime Emmy history, Everybody Loves Raymond remains one of the most beloved sitcoms ever. And while it lives on in reruns, don’t expect it to get the reboot treatment.

Some of the most popular comedies of the ‘90s and ‘00s have seen reboots and revivals — we’re talking Frasier, That ‘70s Show, Scrubs, etc. And despite some fan support, a favorite on Everybody Loves Raymond says one of his show just isn’t going to happen. According to Brad Garrett — who played Ray Romano’s brother Robert to much acclaim — “There won’t be [a continuation]. And I’m just saying that because that’s something that Ray and Phil [Rosenthal, the show’s creator] have always said.” Garrett is referring to the numerous times that Romano has shut down...

Pixar's Elio Falls Short at the Global Box Office Despite 91% Audience Score
Image
Disney and Pixar’s newest animated film is breaking a long-standing record for the studio, and that’s not a good thing. Per Variety, Elio, which debuted in theaters on June 20, has earned just $35 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Of that figure, $14 million came from overseas markets.

The $21 million debut outing domestically is now Pixar’s worst-ever behind films like Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo. Elio took third place at the domestic box office. The 1995 Toy Story earned just over $29 million in its first weekend in theaters.

Disney’s 2023 film Elemental held the title of lowest-grossing international debut with $14.9 million from overseas markets until Elio. Elemental did go on to earn nearly half a billion dollars globally during its theatrical run due to word of mouth.

Critics & Audiences Praised the Film

Elio’s box office performance is surprising, as the film has had good reviews from critics and fans alike.

Elio North America Box Office Day 1: Off To A Disappointing Start, Achieves An Undesirable Feat In Pixar’s History
Image
Elio North America Box Office Day 1 Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Pixar’s Elio’s opening-day gross is not very impressive, and it debuted at #3 in the domestic box office chart. However, since it is an original animation, it will depend on word-of-mouth, and it is too early to decide its faith. The film’s opening-day collection at the box office in North America is on the depressing side. Keep scrolling for more.

On a positive note, the animated feature received rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics gave it 85% and stated, “Catapulted by its theme of building self-esteem, Pixar’s latest cosmic wonder boasts a fanciful world of original creations to dazzling effect.” The audience also agrees with the critic’s rating, rather a little more, as they gave it 91% on the aggregate site. It will suffer because of Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon since they are...

Elio 2 Sequel Hopes Shared by Pixar Movie Star Yonas Kibreab
Image
While Elio has no confirmed sequel, audiences generally always want to see the story of Pixar's renowned worlds go on, and that's no different with the studio's latest release. Thankfully, star Yonas Kibreab knows precisely what he would want to see next.

His first film, now playing in theaters worldwide, saw Kibreab's titular character desperate for a place to fit in. This led him to be abducted by aliens and let into an alien society deep in space. There, he also ran into Brad Garrett's Lord Grigon, a warlord recently denied access to the same community that Elios was being quickly accepted into.

The Direct sat down with Yonas Kibreab to discuss Pixar's latest animated adventure. The actor touched on the important themes of friendship while sharing what he wants to see in Elios's next story.

Elio Will Break a Box Office Record Toy Story Has Held Onto Since 1995 (But Pixar Isn't Celebrating)
Image
Elio has just broken a major Pixar box office record. Unfortunately, it's not one that is worth celebrating.

Per Deadline, after earning $3 million in Thursday previews, Elio is looking at an opening weekend in the range of $22 million. Even if Elio manages to make a few million more than expected, it is not likely that the movie will gross more than the opening weekend of Toy Story ($29.1M), meaning that the latest Pixar movie will become the new record holder for the worst domestic debut in the history of the animation studio.Elio's box office struggles come despite receiving largely positive reviews from critics and audiences. The movie has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 85% approval rating from critics, and received an excellent A overall CinemaScore.

Elio isn't the first Pixar movie in recent memory to flirt with posting the worst opening weekend for the animation studio. Two years ago,...

Pixar's New Movie Suffers Worst Box Office Opening In Studio History
Image
Elio has broken a longstanding Pixar box office record after three decades. The new animated movie, which was directed by Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian, and Adrian Molina, follows alien-obsessed kid Elio (Yonas Kibreab) being abducted by aliens and befriending the worm-esque Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who helps him defend the intergalactic collective known as the Communiverse when his father Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett) attempts to take it over. The Elio cast also includes Zoe Saldaña as Elio's aunt Olga, Shirley Henderson as liquid supercomputer Ooooo, and Jameela Jamil as Communiverse ambassador Questa.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Elio is projected to close out its opening weekend at the domestic box office with a 3-day debut total of just over $22 million. This will place it at No. 3 on the domestic box office chart for the weekend, behind the new release horror movie 28 Years Later at No. 2 and the live-action remake How...

James Gunn Reveals How Supergirl Movie Plans to Use Jason Momoa's Lobo
Image
James Gunn has revealed exactly how the upcoming Supergirlmovie is going to use Jason Momoa's character of Lobo. The actor has already been confirmed to be making a cameo appearance as the fan-favorite alien bounty hunter, after previously playing Aquaman in the Dceu.

Speaking on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, Gunn talked about Momoa's casting and how the character of Lobo will impact Supergirl's story. "The comic is very much a bunch of little stories," he said. "We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story, so Lobo helps us to do that." Supergirl is scheduled to be released as part of the Dcu's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters on June 26, 2026.

Gunn went into further detail about using Tom King's original ideas for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and using them to push the movie forward. "Tom, he's one of the guys I trust, that we talk about possible things.

On-Air Film Review: Taken to the Leader in Pixar Studios ‘Elio’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson for Wbgr-fm on June 19th, 2025, reviewing the new animated film “Elio,” another standard bearer for the Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Studios partnership. In theaters on June 20th.

Yonas Kibreab is the voice of Elio, a precocious pre-teen science nerd who recently lost both parents. He is obsessed with contacting life in other galaxies, which perplexes his guardian Aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña), an officer in the air force. Since Aunt Olga is working the satellite system for the military, Elio is able to sneak into the facility when an obvious close encounter occurs. His hastily typed out message gets to tan alien race, who are looking for an earth leader … as in “take me to your leader” … and assumes it’s Elio. When he is picked up by a spacecraft and taken to the peaceful planet – as...

28 Years Later Outpaces Pixar's Elio at Box Office in Thursday Previews
Image
Early box office previews of 28 Years Later and Pixar's Elio show a strong start for both films, with the new zombie horror film pulling ahead. Neither film is currently predicted to top the box office.

Variety reports that 28 Years Later opened with an impressive $5.8 million in Thursday previews, with Pixar's Elio pulling in significantly less with $3 million. The difference between the two numbers is likely due to Elio being a family film, with families typically heading to the cinemas on weekends. Current predictions show 28 Years Later likely to open in the $28-30 million range, with Elio expected to narrow the gap and gross between $25-30 million, too. The live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake is believed to still hold on to the top spot at the box office, with an estimated $40-43 million coming in on its second weekend.

28 Years Later is the third...

Elio – Review
Image
They’ve had their time in the sun, so move over live-action adaptations, and make room for a fully animated feature film (so the humans are behind the microphones). After scoring lasr Summer with the box office juggernaut Inside Out 2, the artists of Emoryville, California, are back. But, hold on to your computer monitors, this weekend’s new release is indeed “new”, as in not a sequel. Really, this is a bit of both, or all, worlds as much of this adventure begins on Earth, birthplace of the story’s focus, Elio.

When we first meet the title character, a pre-teen lad called Elio (voice of Yonas Kibreab), he’s having a tough time adjusting to life without his recently departed mother and father. But luckily, he’s been taken in by his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldana), an Air Force major stationed at a base that tracks space debris.

Elio's Cute Credits Scene Gives The Movie A Necessary Emotional Payoff
Image
As the people of Earth say: Okay, bye, I love you. This article contains spoilers for "Elio."

Pixar has been making movies since roughly the time I was born, so it's a little odd to engage with debates over whether the studio has become long in the tooth and is now struggling for relevancy in its old age. Sure, the so-called Golden Era from the late '90s to mid 2010s might be receding further and further into the rearview mirror. But many of its movies in the pandemic era have compiled solid reviews, are considered box office hits, and fill an important niche among kids that very few competitors seem interested in doing anymore. "Elio," which I reviewed quite positively for /Film here, likely won't go down as a Major Turning Point™ in any regard. It's a fun, cutesy, and emotionally engaging adventure that appeals to all the nerds...

Where to Watch ‘Elio’: Is the New Pixar Movie Streaming?
Image
Pixar is back with a new animated film, and this time the legendary studio is taking viewers back to outer space. “Elio,” Pixar’s latest offering, comes from studio veterans Adrian Molina (“Coco”) and Madeline Sharafian (“Burrow”) and “Turning Red” director Domee Shi. It is a coming-of-age adventure film about an eccentric young boy whose dream of getting abducted by aliens miraculously — and unexpectedly — comes true.

Whether or not “Elio” will be bursting with the same Pixar magic present in many of the studio’s past hits remains to be seen. For now, here is how, when and where you can watch “Elio.”

When does “Elio” come out?

Disney is set to release “Elio” on Friday, June 20.

Is “Elio” streaming?

Pixar’s straight-to-streaming era is over for the time being. “Elio” is a theatrical release, which means it will only be available to see in movie theaters for the first...

‘Elio’ Is Pixar’s ‘E.T.’, Played in Reverse
Image
Pixar has a knack for coming up with good opening salvos, and Elio, the animation company’s latest movie, kicks off with a strong one. When we meet the 11-year-old kid, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, who gives this sci-fi dramedy its title, he’s nestled under a commissary table and in state of mourning. His parents have died. His aunt, Olga (Zoe Saldaña), has taken over the role of caretaker for the boy. She’s a career military woman who’s given up dreams of training to become an astronaut...

Elio Review: Pixar’s latest movie is another misfire
Image
Plot: An eleven-year-old boy obsessed with aliens accidentally makes contact and is beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization consisting of different alien species from across the galaxy. Passing himself off as the ruler of Earth, he accidentally becomes embroiled in a conflict that could lead to an interplanetary war.

Review: As has become increasingly common with Pixar movies lately, Elio has the feel of a film that’s been reworked endlessly. Originally set to be directed by Adrian Molina, who helmed Coco, he was replaced at some point by directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi (Turning Red), to the point that the finished film bears little resemblance to the well-received teaser trailer that came out two years ago, which featured an introspective, relatable, and sweet-natured lead character in the titular Elio, as voiced by Yonas Kibreab.

Instead, Elio, as presented in the film, is another off-the-wall, overly comic kid character,...

Elio Review — Pixar’s Latest is a Refreshing Intergalactic Gem
Image
Elio, like its title character, is somewhat of an outsider. As much of Disney’s output across its various divisions has, for good or ill, shifted focus to prequels, sequels, remakes, reboots, and pre-established franchises, Pixar’s output in the 2020s has remained steadfastly dedicated to original works, save for last year’s Inside Out 2 and its TV spin-off Dream Productions, as well as the spin-off/prequel/reboot/misunderstood masterpiece that is Lightyear.

Indeed, if you don’t count a handful of critical darlings courtesy of 20th Century Studios’ “Searchlight” imprint, Elio is the only feature film across all of Disney’s 2025 releases to not be based on an existing intellectual property. So, does Pixar’s latest trek into the realm of science fiction, and the first to heavily feature aliens, live up to the kind of wonder and innovation we’ve come to expect from the studio? I...

‘Elio’ Review: A Bright, Fun, and Visually Stunning Space Adventure
Image
A scene from Disney and Pixar’s ‘Elio’ (Photo © 2025 Disney/Pixar)

Is there life out in space amongst the stars? That’s the question humans on earth have been asking for thousands of years. It’s also on little Elio’s mind in Pixar’s animated adventure Elio.

Not having any friends and being obsessed with space and aliens, young Elio (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) is desperate to be abducted by aliens and start a new life off of planet Earth and away from his aunt and guardian, Olga. Olga’s an Air Force officer who he believes would be happier without him.

After numerous botched attempts to be abducted, including lying on the beach in a big drawn circle with the words “Aliens… Abduct Me!” Elio sneaks into a top-secret meeting being held by Olga. When it ends, he records a message: “If any aliens are listening, please come and get me.

Pixar's Elio Actor Brad Garrett Admits Getting Bullied as a Child Influenced His Villain (Exclusive)
Image
In Elio, Brad Garrett plays Lord Grigon, a villainous figure who is more complicated than one might think. The character first crosses paths with the titular child (played by Yonas Kibreab) shortly after Elios becomes a candidate for membership into the alien society known as the Communiverse—something Grigon previously attempted to be a part of.

The Direct spoke with Brad Garrett in an exclusive interview, during which he broke down his space warlord in Disney Pixar's Elio. The actor compared Grigon to "that obnoxious guy at all the Little League games who's yelling at the umpire, that's yelling at his kid, that's yelling at the other players."

The character's real form is also protected by an intense exo-suit of armor, which works on a literal and metaphorical level. "I think I had that shell a great part during my childhood," Garrett admitted, explaining how if people don't work out certain things throughout life,...

Disney and Pixar on Their Way to Another Hit as Elio Debuts With Enthusiastic Reviews
Image
Disney and Pixar have a new project coming out: Elio. After the massive success the two had last year with Inside Out 2, the new animation comes under a lot of pressure.

However, it looks like Elio can handle it. The original story follows the titular 11-year-old boy into outer space, where he is searching for a bigger meaning as he forms new bonds with alien lifeforms. Ahead of its release in theaters on June 20, Elio debuted with an enthusiastic 83% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. One day ahead of its release on Friday, its scores were even more delightful and in line with other Pixar hits: it officially received the Certified Fresh badge, alongside an 88% approval score out of 90 reviews.

Elio is Pixar's 29th film, and is on its way to becoming a new hit for the studio, as well as its parent company, Disney. "For centuries, people have called...
