Republicans Once Again Have No Clue What to Do About the Speakership
Image
War has erupted between Israel and Hamas, another government shutdown battle looms in the not-so-distant future, and the House of Representatives remains paralyzed by Republican infighting over the speakership.

A closed-door GOP meeting on Monday to discuss the party’s strategy for electing a new leader devolved into a grievance-laden “therapy session” over last week’s vote to remove Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker, according to a report from Politico.

Republicans, who hold the slimmest of majorities in the House, are determined to avoid the kind of humiliating spectacle that...

Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Bfg’ Comes to Life in New Trailer and Full Cannes Press Conference
Following the Cannes premiere of Steven Spielberg’s follow-up to Bridge of Spies, his adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s The Bfg, Disney has released a new full-length trailer for the adventure, giving away much more of the titular character’s fantasy-filled world. Coming from the late E.T. scribe Melissa Mathison, the story follows a young girl, Sophie, who guides the Queen of England and the Bfg (Mark Rylance, coming off his Oscar win for Spielberg) — a big, friendly giant — to stop Bloodbottlers, the big and unfriendly sort, from eating children.

Unfortunately, we were mixed on the film, saying in our review from the festival, “CGI loses the day in Steven Spielberg’s The Bfg, a partly motion-captured, eco-minded adaptation of Roald Dahl’s adored children’s book that leans so heavily on green-screen trickery that even Mark Rylance’s kind eyes — squinting out from that computer-generated abyss — can’t save it from mediocrity.

First Trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Roald Dahl Adaptation ‘The Bfg’
After helming the more adult-geared drama Bridge of Spies, as Steven Spielberg is known to do, he also went ahead and shot a family-friendly tentpole before his Tom Hanks-led feature even made it to theaters. His adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s The Bfg comes from the late from E.T. scribe Melissa Mathison, and it follows a young girl, Sophie, who guides the Queen of England and the Bfg, a big, friendly giant, to stop Bloodbottlers, the big and unfriendly sort, from eating children.

The first trailer is much more of a teaser, thankfully not revealing too much footage yet. However, with its magical tone and wonderful-looking design, this looks to be the most fun Spielberg’s had in awhile, and we can’t wait to see it next summer. (It also looks to be a great double feature with A Monster Calls.) Featuring the cast of Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill,...

Jemaine Clement Joins Steven Spielberg's The Bfg
David Jason and Amanda Root in The BFG (1989)
Because he sometimes enjoys finishing one movie while starting another (see Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List), Steven Spielberg is kicking off work on Roald Dahl adaptation The Bfg even as he puts the final touches to Cold War thriller Bridge Of Spies. He’s now added Jemaine Clement, Penelope Wilton and Rebecca Hall to the cast. And they’re not the only new additions, as David Adamthwaite, Daniel Bacon, Chris Gibbs, Adam Godley, Jonathan Holmes, Paul Moniz de Sa and Olafur Olafsson have all been hired to join Mark Rylance’s titular character, Ruby Barnhill as young heroine Sophie and Bill Hader, who is playing one of the less charming giants. While most of the other roles remain cloaked in mystery we do know that Wilton will be the Queen and Hall her maid. Royal Wilton: admit it, you knew it was headed that way.Adapted by E.T.’s...

Toxic Skies, Deadly Diseases, and Government Cover-ups
What is more scary a violent slasher, or a film that feeds paranoia about big companies and corrupt governments? Toxic Skies has a premise that incorporates capitalist deception and a disease that is brought about by chem trails. Chem trails are the deliberate release of chemicals at high altitudes to detoxify, or toxify the general public below. Toxic Skies deftly utilizes the public's fear of the potential of this phenomenon and provides, what looks like, an entertaining piece of cinema. The film stars Anne Heche (Spread), Daniel Bacon (39 Steps), and Barclay Hope (Cruel Intentions 2). The DVD date for the release is March 23, with Image Entertainment helping with distribution. More info' below.

A synopsis for Toxic Skies:

"A mysterious disease is spreading across the country, killing people with alarming speed in this pulse-pounding, action-filled thriller. Toxic Skies co-stars Anne Heche and James Tupper. These two reignite their chemistry as...
