Tim Allen is getting back in the garage. ABC has officially confirmed that Shifting Gears is returning for a second season — and now, thanks to a new filming update, we also know when it hits the air. Season 2 of the multigenerational family comedy begins production on Monday, August 19, with live studio audience tickets already distributed for the taping of the premiere episode. That gives fans a pretty good idea of how quickly things are moving — especially now that ABC has locked in a Wednesday, October 1 at 8Pm debut for the second season.
The show, which stars Allen as Matt, a widowed mechanic suddenly living with his adult daughter Riley (played by Kat Dennings) and her two kids, ended its ten-episode freshman run on a cliffhanger back in March. There's nothing better than an unexpected action hero, and while the latest addition has thrown a fist before, he’s best known by far for his comedic timing rather than his gunfighting prowess. Well, that’s all about to change, as American Pie star Seann William Scott breaks bad as your new favorite action antihero in the first trailer for Bad Man, which you can check out below.
Bad Man marks the debut feature from director Michael Diliberti, with the filmmaker working from a script he co-wrote with JJ Nelson. Alongside American Pie’s Seann William Scott, the action outing is brimming with comedic talent, including Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Late Bloomer star Johnny Simmons, Saturday Night Live alum and 21 Jump Street star Rob Riggle, and Waiting... and Accepted star Kaitlin Doubleday, as well as Chance Perdomo, Lovi Poe, Marcelle LeBlanc, Erik Audé, and John Patrick Jordan.

The Seann William Scott action comedy Bad Man was filmed in the state of Alabama during December of 2023 and January of 2024, so it will be premiering at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, Alabama on August 24th – but those of us who aren’t able to make it to Sidewalk won’t have to wait long to see the movie. Vertical is planning to give the film a theatrical release in North America sometime in the fall, and Vertigo Releasing will be giving it a digital release in the UK on September 15th. Bad Man will be available to watch through Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Sky Store on that date – and in anticipation of that release, a trailer has dropped online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Matt fights with his nemesis Eve (Jenna Elfman), who works next door to him and hits his car with his door. By the end of the episode, the enemies become lovers and share a shocking kiss. 28 years after the release of Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler is back with his sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Set 29 years after Happy Gilmore won his first Tour Championship, he now returns to play golf for his daughter’s ballet school.
Just like the first film, the sequel is full of Sandler’s blend of potty‑mouth wit, underdog grit, and heartfelt redemption. The sequel brings back the beloved golf icon nearly three decades after the original, with nostalgic callbacks, the classic soundtrack, and a plot that finds Happy mentoring the next generation while still throwing fastballs (or golf tees) at anyone who gets in his way.
Reuniting Sandler with several of the original stars like Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Blake Clark, and Christopher McDonald, the film also stars several fresh faces like Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler. Although movies from the American Pie franchise have been available to stream in different regions on Netflix from time to time, not once has the sex comedy film series been available to stream properly in the U.S. Now, for the first time in over two decades, American Pie (1999) and American Pie 2 (2001) are reportedly coming to Netflix U.S. starting August 1, 2025.
The film series’ first installment, starring Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, andTara Reid, launched a franchise that helped redefine teen sex comedies in the early 2000s. The film circled around a group of high schoolers making an iconic pact to lose their virginity before graduation, and it went on to become a box office phenomenon, grossing over $235 million worldwide on an $11 million budget. As per Whats on Netflix, some of the other titles coming to Netflix in August are Fire Country Season 2, After the Sunset, and Megamind.

In 1999, teenagers came out in droves to see American Pie. Now, almost 30 years later, the comedy classic and its equally funny sequel, American Pie 2, are heading to Netflix.
Beginning Aug. 1, American Pie and American Pie 2 will be available to stream on Netflix. The coming-of-age sex comedy follows a group of teenagers — Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs), Chris "Oz" Ostreicher (Chris Klein), Kevin Myers (Thomas Ian Nicholas), and Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) — who make a pact to lose their virginity before they graduate high school. Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Owen, Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Mena Suvari, and Shannon Elizabeth co-star as their classmates, while comedy icons Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge play Biggs and Scott's characters' respective parents.
At the time of its release, American Pie received mostly positive reviews, with many critics calling it a well-done modern update to the teen sex comedy genre. However, as...

Start your engines — Matt Parker’s garage is reopening for business. ABC’s breakout comedy Shifting Gears is officially back in gear for Season 2, with Tim Allen returning to the role that has already cemented itself as another classic in his sitcom legacy, as the network has confirmed that the new season will premiere on October 1. Fans of the show — and of Allen’s well-oiled comedic formula — are revved up and ready. The series first premiered in January 2025, where it quickly became ABC’s most-streamed comedy premiere ever, pulling in a staggering 17 million cross-platform viewers in just seven days. While its live ratings cooled slightly over the season, the show’s strong delayed viewership and streaming performance were more than enough to guarantee another lap around the track.

It didn't cause too much of a stir when it was released in 2001, and critics weren't exactly blown away by it, but Ivan Reitman's sci-fi comedy film "Evolution" is actually lighthearted and fun. The film follows a team of nerdy, bickersome scientists, played by David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, and Julianne Moore, and a firefighter played by Seann William Scott, as they investigate a mysterious meteor that landed in the deserts of Arizona. The meteor contains remnants of extraterrestrial spores that they learn are evolving at a breakneck pace. It takes only days for the microbes to evolve into fungus, then flatworms, then fish. It won't be too long before vertebrates appear, followed by primates.
The lead characters all react with comedic incredulity, and their mood remains light, even as they discover that the rapidly evolving creatures could easily overtake the Earth within a matter of weeks. They will eventually...

ABC has posted the top two highest-rated shows for the 2024-25 TV season, including one that the network almost canceled. With the 2024-25 broadcast season over and the 2025-26 season imminent, there are many shows that have performed admirably, with ratings juggernauts like The Rookie continuing to be a huge success on ABC.
ABC rival shows such as CBS' Tracker season 2, and popular comedy Ghosts have also performed well in terms of ratings. But there are two ABC shows in particular that have left the rest of the field in their wake when it comes to performance and ratings among the 18-49 viewing demographic.
Per TV Insider, the network's shows High Potential and Shifting Gears posted the highest ratings for new dramas and comedies, despite the latter being almost canceled. High Potential was #1 for new dramas among adults 18-49, with a 3.85 rating, while Shifting Gears did the same for comedies,...

Some men climb mountains. The Rock seems content battling snakes, spirits, and stone-templed curses, all without leaving the jungle. With six separate movies set deep in foliage and danger, Dwayne Johnson’s cinematic résumé seems to have sprouted its own subgenre: The Rock Jungle Movie. But not all vines are worth swinging. Some of these adventures are well-created crowd-pleasers with stellar casts and clever writing, while others feel like overgrown relics or missed opportunities, lost in the underbrush.
In this rundown (no pun intended), we’re not just looking at jungle-set action; we’re diving into box office numbers, Rotten Tomatoes scores, directors, and performances to separate the classics from the cinematic compost. From Jumanji’s billion-dollar success to the forgotten misfire of The Rundown, here’s your definitive guide to which of The Rock’s six jungle odysseys deserve your time and which should be left behind with the mosquitoes.

Writer and producer Michael Diliberti is making his directorial debut with his upcoming movie Bad Man from Hemlock Circle Productions. In this Lethal Weapon-inspired film, the filmmaker worked with his hand-picked cast, including American Pie star Seann William Scott.
In Bad Man, Johnny Simmons stars as Bobby Gaines, a small-town cop who truly believes that all it takes to save the day is being a good guy. However, as his personal life worsens and a dangerous new criminal element settles down locally, it becomes too much for him to handle. Cue Sean William Scott's Bobby Gaines, a hotshot federal agent and bad boy who declares that he knows exactly how to fix the down problems—needless to say, things don't go as anyone expects.

You know it. You've probably quoted it. And now it’s back in the top 10. American Pie – the raunchy, heartfelt comedy that turned apple desserts into punchlines and band camp into cultural shorthand – is having a serious resurgence. As of this July 4th weekend, the 1999 teen comedy classic is sitting pretty at #9 on Peacock, proving that awkward high school horniness never really goes out of style. Now, as we eat hot dogs and light fireworks, fans are rediscovering (or discovering for the first time) what made American Pie such a surprise hit in the first place.

Broadcast TV has seen a surge in recent years. As streaming splinters the viewership of the United States even more, the good old broadcast model has been waiting in the wings to deliver some acceptable programming that's bringing more people on-board than ever before. But what makes a broadcast TV winner in the digital age? Is it banking on an old property that everyone loved about 30-40 years ago, or is there more to it than that? For Clayne Crawford, he definitely fell into that second camp, and audiences agreed with him on that point, or at least they did when it came to "Lethal Weapon" on Fox. The actor's disagreements with how the project was formatted played a massive role in his eventual exit from the well-liked TV procedural, and the behind-the-scenes details are fascinating.

Across four movies released over the course of more than a decade, "Lethal Weapon" cemented itself as a consistent and wildly entertaining franchise. In fact, despite Mel Gibson's issues over the years, there is still talk of a possible "Lethal Weapon 5" to this day. Whether or not that happens is another topic altogether, but in light of the continued popularity of the movies, it's perhaps not surprising that Fox brought Riggs and Murtaugh to the small screen beginning in 2016 with a "Lethal Weapon" TV series.
Starring Clayne Crawford as Martin Riggs and Damon Wayans as Roger Murtaugh, the show was a hit out of the gate for Fox, only for the network to cancel the series after three seasons in 2019. As Variety reported at the time, that was at least in part due to a pretty steep ratings decline.

Shifting Gears: Finale Kiss Between Matt & Eve Steals Spotlight From Real Romance (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Shifting Gears Season 1 ends with a bang or, more accurately, a kiss. Tim Allen’s Matt locking lips with Jenna Elfman’s Eve might’ve been a shocking moment, but it also sparks a serious issue: it threatens to steal focus from the real couple fans are rooting for — Riley and Gabriel.
That final episode twist was meant to be cheeky, unexpected, and fun. Kat Dennings, who plays Riley and also serves as producer, admitted (ScreenRant), “I actually squealed out loud watching it… I couldn’t believe it even though I knew it was going to happen.” But that “Omg” moment might come at a cost.

Christopher Walken may look intimidating on the set of Dune, but he gets really silly sometimes that he loves faking his own birthday on movie sets so the crew would buy him a cake. Seann William Scott revealed this during an interview and spilled all the details about the veteran star’s funny antics.
Walken is one of the most recognizable Hollywood stars today. He has a career spanning six decades and a lengthy portfolio with his works on film, television, and stage. He is often the go-to actor for menacing characters, but not a lot of people know that he’s got a goofy side.

The engine’s revving once again at Matt Parker’s garage — and yes, Tim Allen is behind the wheel. ABC’s breakout hit Shifting Gears has officially been renewed for Season 2, with all signs pointing to production ramping up soon. Allen himself confirmed the news with a simple post on Instagram stating: “Well well well......Back to work.” The multi-camera sitcom first premiered in January 2025 and quickly became ABC’s most-streamed comedy premiere ever, drawing a massive 17 million cross-platform viewers in just seven days. While live viewership dipped in later episodes, delayed viewership remained strong enough to ensure a second season, which fans have been clamoring for.
Created by Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully, with Michelle Nader as showrunner, Shifting Gears stars Allen as Matt Parker, a recently widowed gearhead who runs a high-end auto restoration shop. His world is turned upside down when his estranged daughter Riley (played...

If you take the time to examine every movie from "Anchorman" director Adam McKay, you'll eventually find provocative, self-serious satires of male-driven problems of power in our world, including "The Big Short" and "Vice." But years before this purposeful filmmaking shift, McKay left it all out on the field, saying everything he needed to say on the subject in the guise of a stupid, absurd, and improv-heavy buddy comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.
2008's "Step Brothers" is an immediate lightning bolt of laughter. It's bold, vulgar, and always chasing the most specific choice possible. It's a comedy for contemporary comedy nerds' dreams, playing with beloved concepts of sketch and improv to heighten games in ways never quite seen in studio cinema before. It's a constant barrage of body blows toward a post-George W. Bush world, reckoning with the soothsaying horrors of pre-recession capitalism and toxic masculinity...

Tim Allen knows he’s a bit of a throwback. The Home Improvementand Last Man Standing star has spent over three decades cracking jokes in front of a live studio audience, and in his latest series, Shifting Gears, he’s right back where it all began: center stage, with punchlines timed to laughter and stories built for the long haul. And apparently, that formula still works – even in the era of binge-drops and algorithm-driven content. Speaking about the surprising success of Shifting Gears, Allen shared how surreal it feels to still be making multi-cam sitcoms in the age of swipes and streams.
“You don't know what's going to happen. I feel like I'm in an antiques show because I'm on linear TV, remember that? A live studio audience,” Allen said to Entertainment Tonight ahead of the Disney upfronts earlier this week. “It's all of us vintage guys on Shifting Gears...

Jason Biggs wants to make another 'American Pie' movie. The 47-year-old actor is "very proud" of the comedy franchise - in which he played Jim Levenstein - and how it shaped his career, and after the cast last got together for 2012's 'American Pie Reunion', he'd love to reunite on screen with the likes of Eugene Levy, Jennifer Coolidge, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein, Tara Reid, Alyson Hannigan, Natasha Lyonne and Eddie Kaye Thomas once again.Asked about being part of a potential 'American Pie 5', he told People magazine: “Of course, of course, I would. I’ve always said I would 100% be down to work with those people again and to play that character again, and you know, it’s one of the best experiences of my life.“I’m very proud of it.“I’m proud that 26 years later people are still talking about it,...

Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, Dawson’s Creek, American Pie — these are some of the projects that you’d likely have spotted the cast of the original Final Destination in before the franchise-starting movie had its date with destiny in 2000. And, while Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, and Seann William Scott were all recognizable faces at the turn of the millennium, they weren’t quite as huge as, say, Kirsten Dunst or Courteney Cox — and that was the point. During an exciting live installment of Collider Ladies Night with Perri Nemiroff, which was preceded by a screening of Final Destination: Bloodlines, longtime franchise producer Sheila Hanahan Taylor spoke about the first casting decisions that allowed the movie to be not just entertaining but terrifyingly relatable.

Good news for American Pie fans. Two sequels from the theatrically released entries will be getting new physical media releases. The bad news is that these particular releases are from a British distributor, and the normal Blu-rays are Region B. However, American Pie 2 will get an Ultra-hd 4K remastering on a region-free Blu-ray so North American consumers can enjoy it as well. According to Blu-ray.com, 88 Films is releasing the first sequel and the last sequel to the 1999 teen virginity comedy. Both Blu-rays are due to hit retailers in June.
The description for American Pie 2 reads,
“The characters you love are back! One year after the prom-night misadventures immortalized in American Pie, the entire gang has reunited for the summer. Now, an innocent-looking beach house will be transformed into the ultimate party-central. Five guys will discover the powerful bonds of friendship… and Super Glue. Spoilers ahead for “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 4, Episode 9
Heading into the writers room for the fourth season of “The Righteous Gemstones,” series star, writer and producer Edi Patterson didn’t know this season was going to be the last for the HBO comedy. No one did.
“Even though I’m in on the writing, it was never a definite thing until after we finished the season. We started to get a feeling that maybe it was time to end the story,” Patterson told TheWrap.
For fans of the HBO comedy, the Gemstone family may seem like a ridiculous crop of people. They constantly scheme and lie, stealing money from their family’s megachurch and spending millions on harebrained schemes. They have some of the most vulgar mouths in TV history. One of Patterson’s favorite Judy lines happened in Season 1 after Judy tells her brother, “I’m gonna move to Malibu beach,...

Danny McBride, the creator of HBO's acclaimed comedy The Righteous Gemstones, has shed light on his decision to conclude the show with its recent fourth season finale. The series debuted in 2019 and follows the Gemstone family, a famous and affluent televangelist dynasty in South Carolina, led by patriarch Eli Gemstone (John Goodman). And now that the series is finally over, McBride is breaking down all of his thoughts about the maybe-not-so-holy series.
During a recent conversation with IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, McBride, who also stars in the series as Jesse Gemstone, shared that the decision to bring the show to a close with its fourth season wasn't set in stone.
"Even as I approached this season, I wasn't sure if I was going to make it the final season or not. This is a very awesome show to be able to work on. It's in my backyard. I love...

This article contains mild spoilers for the series finale of "The Righteous Gemstones."
After six years and four seasons, Danny McBride's hit HBO comedy, "The Righteous Gemstones," has completed its story. At least, the story audiences are permitted to see. The third HBO series from McBride and frequent collaborators David Gordon Green and Jody Hill under their Rough House Pictures banner following "Eastbound & Down" and the criminally underappreciated "Vice Principals," time will be incredibly kind to "The Righteous Gemstones," a show too smart, too funny, and too full of heart for its brilliance to be recognized on the scale it so rightfully deserved. The fact that the series (as of publication) never nabbed a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series is downright criminal and, in a just world, would be the only sign anyone needs to delegitimize the awards circuit. Some folks just don't appreciate the gift of Uncle Baby Billy Freeman,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the series finale of “The Righteous Gemstones,” now streaming on Max.
In the end, “The Righteous Gemstones” said goodbye as only “The Righteous Gemstones” could: with a masturbating monkey.
Though most of the HBO series’ final episode, “That Man of God May Be Complete,” takes place at the titular televangelist family’s palatial vacation home, the last scene actually filmed was from the prior episode. After Sunday services, the Gemstones and their entourage have decamped to Jason’s Steakhouse, the gang’s favorite place to hold court and hit the salad bar. There, Dr. Watson — the capuchin monkey who acts as a service animal for Bj Barnes (Tim Baltz), a Gemstone in-law who’s been paralyzed in a freak pole-dancing accident — pleasures himself and smokes menthol cigarettes as the crowd eggs him on. It’s a very “Gemstones” blend of creatively crude and strangely sweet.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 4, Episode 9.
Over the course of six years, “The Righteous Gemstones” took some wild turns. What started as a plot to steal money from a megachurch to cover up an affair morphed into a saga about a money-losing teenage Jesus show — or “Teenjus” — by Season 4. But even in its own wild universe, the series finale of Danny McBride’s HBO comedy feels surprising.
Most of Season 4 follows the Gemstone family facing off against Cobb Milsap (Michael Rooker), a former family friend who has grown to resent the Gemstones’ wealth. The penultimate episode sees Cobb dying in his own gator pit. In “That Man of God May Be Complete,” his son Corey (Seann William Scott) steps in to finish the job. After asking this family for $7 million, Corey goes on a rampage, shooting Jesse (McBride), Kelvin (Adam DeVine) and Judy (Edi Patterson) in their lake house.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 Episode 9, “That the Man of God May Be Complete.”] The Righteous Gemstones capped off a four-season run with quite a finale episode, particularly when it came to fan-favorite couple Kelvin (Adam DeVine) and Keef (Tony Cavalero), who declared their love for one another in an epic wedding ceremony. As viewers saw in the installment titled, “That the Man of God May Be Complete,” the Gemstones came together with Lori (Megan Mullally) and her son Corey (Seann William Scott) and his wife Jana (Arden Myrin) at their lake house, Galilee Gulch, as they reflected on their bonds following the death of Lori’s ex Cobb (Michael Rooker). But after some songs and bonding, Corey made things super awkward when he asked the Gemstones for seven million dollars to help buy his late dad’s alligator farm. When they refused to do so, the tension grew exponentially. Corey...

Fans have been shocked by a recent appearance of American Pie star Jason Biggsas he attended the 2025 City Harvest Gala: Carnaval on Tuesday in New York City. Why? Well, many still remember the 46-year-old actor from his American Pie days, and he is almost half the man he was back then – literally after revealing he has lost a huge 40lbs through some good eating and - jokingly - the “stress” of directing his first movie.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Biggs jokingly put down his dramatic change in appearance to working on his upcoming movie, Getaway, which he also stars in with Justin H. Min, Meaghan Rath, Arturo Castro, and Kamilla Kowal. He said:
'A part of it was I directed my first movie. Probably the most stressed I've ever been in my life, professionally anyway. So that contributed a little bit.”

Seann William Scott and ex-wife Olivia Korenberg may be launching a custody battle.
We’ve seen how these custody wars can turn out. But this one is a little atypical.
According to Korenberg’s court filing, her actor ex-husband is yanking an entire house — one that she spent money upgrading — out from under her and their daughter.
She says that she’s looking for a new place to live, but feels trapped — unable to move to a cheaper location, and unsure what kind of child support she’ll be getting.

Shifting Gears ended Season 1 on a few cliffhangers. The ABC sitcom follows Matt Parker (Tim Allen), a widowed father who runs a car repair shop and whose daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and grandchildren (Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis) move in with him after her marriage becomes on the rocks. The final episode of Season 1 saw Riley’s husband, Jimmy (Lucas Neff), come back into town and tell her that he was offered a spot to open for the Foo Fighters. But first, he asked if she wanted to get back together. Instead of answering him right away, Riley gave him divorce papers by the end of the episode. This led to her childhood best friend/brother’s friend/dad’s coworker, Gabriel (Seann William Scott), confessing his feelings to her. However, she didn’t hear him because she’d fallen asleep on her couch after drinking too much at a party.

Shifting Gears is coming back. ABC has renewed the Tim Allen-fronted sitcom for a second season.
Per TVLine, the renewal comes less than a week after it was reported that Shifting Gears was one of two ABC shows "on the bubble," an idiom used in the entertainment industry to refer to a show whose future on its network is uncertain. The other show, the Ryan Murphy-created drama Doctor Odyssey, remains on the bubble following ABC's string of renewals today. Besides Shifting Gears, the network picked up four of its hit procedural dramas — 9-1-1, Grey’s Anatomy, The Rookie, and Will Trent — for another season.

ABC is keeping the engine running on its newest family comedy. The network has officially renewed Shifting Gears for Season 2, giving fans more time with Tim Allen and Kat Dennings' delightfully dysfunctional father-daughter duo. Created by Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully, with Michelle Nader serving as showrunner, the multi-cam sitcom follows estranged father Matt (Allen) and daughter Riley (Dennings) as they attempt to rebuild their fractured relationship — with plenty of sarcasm, misunderstandings, and reluctant bonding along the way.
There initially seemed to be little chance of the show not being renewed when it debuted in January and quickly became ABC’s most-streamed comedy premiere ever, pulling in a whopping 17 million cross-platform viewers in just seven days, but doubts began to creep in as live viewership dipped as the season progressed, even though the show consistently saw solid gains in delayed viewing.

ABC has renewed freshman comedy series Shifting Gears, starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, for a second season. According to sources, the pickup is for 10 episodes, which is not atypical for a series that has launched in midseason and matches the sitcom’s Season 1 order.
Shifting Gears was one of two ABC series on the bubble this spring, along with fellow freshman Doctor Odyssey. The drama starring Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson now remains the only ABC scripted series in limbo as the network today also renewed — as expected — veterans Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, The Rookie as well as third-year drama Will Trent, which join previously picked up High Potential and Abbott Elementary.

ABC is renewing four dramas and one comedy series, Variety has learned.
The Disney-owned broadcaster has picked up new seasons of “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” and “Will Trent” as well as “Shifting Gears.” The renewals will bring “9-1-1” to Season 9, “Grey’s Anatomy” to Season 22, “The Rookie” to Season 8, “Shifting Gears” to Season 2, and “Will Trent” to Season 4.
ABC had previously announced renewals for both “High Potential” and the hit comedy “Abbott Elementary.” That means that the only current ABC show still awaiting word on a renewal is “Doctor Odyssey.” ABC has opted not to order any pilots this season, but did order the “9-1-1” spinoff “9-1-1: Nashville” straight-to-series, with Chris O’Donnell set for a lead role.
Of today’s renewals, only “Shifting Gears” was seen as a toss up for a new season. The Tim Allen-Kat Dennings multi-cam suffered a noticeable drop off in the ratings since its January debut.

Shifting Gears made waves back in January when it launched with a massive 17 million viewers across platforms in just seven days — which was actually the biggest multi-cam comedy debut in ABC history. But according to a new report from Deadline, the Tim Allen and Kat Dennings-led sitcom may be headed for an unexpected stall. Despite its strong start, the show is now at risk of cancelation due to declining ratings and the cost of its star-studded cast. Yes, a show that successful might not be renewed. Madness.
Created by Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully, with Michelle Nader as showrunner, Shifting Gears follows estranged father and daughter Matt (Allen) and Riley (Dennings) as they try to rebuild their relationship. The ensemble cast also includes Seann William Scott, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis.

Supplementing its lineup with reality fare, game shows, newsmagazines, sports and occasional Hulu series reruns, ABC has the fewest scripted shows of the broadcast networks that program three hours of primetime this season with nine: six dramas and three comedies including the six-episode final run of The Conners. Compare that to 18 for CBS, with 14 dramas and four comedies; and 15 for NBC (which like ABC has a night of NFL football in the fall), with 11 dramas and four comedies.
Unlike CBS or NBC, ABC does not have pilots — regular or planted spinoffs — in contention for next season. The network has picked up one straight-to-series drama for 2025-2026, spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville. With few scripted shows on the air, no pilots in the pipeline and an existing series, The Conners, departing as 9-1-1: Nashville is coming on,...
