Before he became the gravel-voiced patriarch of Yellowstone and the embodiment of frontier stoicism, Kevin Costnerwas cracking jokes, crushing fastballs, and falling in love in one of his most charming and emotionally layered roles. Now, thanks to Pluto TV, Costner’s iconic turn as Crash Davis in Bull Durham is available to stream for free — and it might just be his finest performance. Released in 1988 and written and directed by Ron Shelton, Bull Durham is more than just one of the best baseball movies ever made. It’s also the most alive Costner has ever felt on screen — a rare performance in which he balances swagger and self-doubt with perfect ease.

There's a bittersweet yet feel-good vibe in "Stick" — Apple TV+'s new underdog sports dramedy (which follows in the footsteps of "Ted Lasso") — that's sneakily endearing. On the surface, Jason Keller's show is shuffling variations of clichés ripped from classic sports films and new wave TV comedies (like jokes that draw on the divide between Gen Z and Gen X), but underneath its fairly predictable formula, there's a genuinely charming heart that caught me off-guard.
The setup is pretty simple: Pryce Cahill, a once-promising pro golfer turned golf club salesman, is broke and in the middle of a divorce with a pretty grim financial outlook toward his future. Strongly related to his money problems, he'll likely lose the home filled with memories and golf memorabilia he currently lives in. If there are two things that are synonymous with Kevin Costner's cinematic legacy, it's cowboy hats and home runs. While he's starred in a diverse range of projects throughout the years, he's particularly fond of Westerns and sports movies, with the latter mostly centering around baseball. As of this writing, the actor has starred in four baseball flicks, narrated a documentary about the game, and played a retired baseball player in the 2005 rom-com-drama "The Upside of Anger," so it's safe to say that he's a fan of the sport.
Of course, Costner is the perfect actor to recruit for any baseball-related entertainment. Prior to becoming Hollywood's ultimate dad actor, he pursued a career in the sport, but those dreams were scuppered after his Cal State Fullerton coaches dropped him from the team -- a decision that ultimately led to Costner taking acting classes and finding his true calling.

Way before Ted Lasso charmed us with its underdog charm and fish-out-of-water feels, Kevin Costner had already played a similar game, but back in the ’80s. Nearly 37 years ago, Costner starred in a sports flick that shared major Ted Lasso energy: heart, grit, and a whole lot of emotional payoff.
However, every studio flat-out rejected it. And while it didn’t have a mustache-wearing football coach at its center, it proved that feel-good sports stories don’t need hype to score big. Sometimes, they just need a heart.

Bull Durham brings the classic 1988 film to the stage. Veteran catcher “Crash” Davis is tasked with mentoring hotshot rookie pitcher “Nuke” Laloosh, while baseball muse Annie must choose her seasonal protégé. Directed by Marc Bruni (The Great Gatsby) and adapted by its original screenwriter/director, Ron Shelton, with music and lyrics by Susan Werner, this pitch-perfect musical delivers a winning blend of comedy, drama, and romance as passion, ambition, and America’s favorite pastime collide. The production will be choreographed by Joshua Bergasse. Vadim Feichtner serves as music supervisor....

Ron Shelton's "Bull Durham" is a shaggy wonder. It's a sports film that is wholly disinterested in winning or losing — at least when it comes to the playing field. There is competition in the film, but it's for a place in the bed of Susan Sarandon's baseball groupie/guru Annie Savoy, and even this competition is over pretty quickly. Kevin Costner's journeyman Crash Davis, a nearly washed-up catcher who once spent 21 glorious days in the majors (aka "the show"), cedes Annie to Ebby Calvin "Nuke" Laloosh, a fireball-hurling phenom with a "ten-cent brain," because he's appalled by her romantic interest in an imbecile. But Crash and Annie form a partnership of sorts via their shared education of Ebby Calvin. The sole reason Crash has been brought to the minor league Durham Bulls is to mold this knucklehead into a big-league stud.

Throw a bunch of movie buffs together in a room and ask them to arrive at a consensus regarding the top 20 list for any genre, and voices will be raised before too long. In the end, if these people are grown-ups, they will find common ground on widely beloved classics and maybe throw a bone or two to an offbeat favorite. Throw a bunch of movie buffs who also happen to be passionate sports fans together and ask them to name the 20 greatest sports films of all time, and punches might just get thrown.
For most people, sports movies are supposed to be inspirational, stand-up-and-cheer entertainments. They're rigidly formulaic underdog stories in which lovable losers pull together to win the big game against seemingly unbeatable juggernauts. Before Kevin Costner became the go-to guy for American epics, he was just an actor trying to prove he could swing like a pro. And for Bull Durham, he didn’t wait for the cameras to roll to show off his skills, he hit vodka, batting cages, and the parking lot to lock down the role of Crash Davis.
Writer/director Ron Shelton recalled the wild pre-filming ritual in an interview with The Ringer, Costner had already been brought onto the project, but he wasn’t exactly a household name. So, he decided to show, not tell, he had the grit and grace to play a washed-up minor leaguer with poetry in his soul and swagger in his stance.

At the outset of 1993, there wasn't a more bankable movie star than Kevin Costner. Dating back to Brian De Palma's "The Untouchables" in 1987, Costner had starred in at least one blockbuster every year. He possessed an earnestness and practical facility that recalled Gary Cooper, but he could place a sexy, ornery spin on the ball if need be (particularly as minor league catcher Crash Davis in Ron Shelton's masterful "Bull Durham"). He was such a winning presence onscreen and as a Hollywood concept in general that his Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences peers enthusiastically declared his "Dances with Wolves" the Best Picture of 1990 over Martin Scorsese's undeniable "Goodfellas." He also snagged the Best Director trophy, which felt like a statement of principle from the Oscars: let's make movies big and sweeping and morally upright again.

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
What’s the greatest chase scene in American movies? One could easily make a convincing argument for the lengthy action sequence that anchors Buster Keaton’s “The General,” or for the kinetic urban set pieces of “Bullitt” and “The French Connection.” Movies like “Duel,” “The Driver,” and “Speed” are essentially feature-length chases broken up by occasional dialogue sequences, and for sheer scale, the final act of “The Blues Brothers” is tough to beat.

In a remarkable career spanning over 60 years, Kurt Russell has just about done it all. He's been a Disney child star, an action hero, a serious dramatic actor, an unabashedly silly comedic lead, and Elvis Presley. Though Russell was never a box office titan on par with contemporaries like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis, he is worshipped as a god by genre fandom for having played such iconic s***kickers as Snake Plissken in "Escape from New York," R.J. MacReady in "The Thing" and Jack Burton in "Big Trouble in Little China." Those last two were flops theatrically, but they've gone from being cult favorites to bona-fide mainstream classics. As a result, Russell, at the age of 73, might be more beloved now than he's ever been.
For Russell fanatics, there's a lively discussion to be had over what his best performance outside of that aforementioned holy trinity of John Carpenter movies might be.

Known for his sports films such as White Men Can’t Jump and Bull Durham, writer-director Ron Shelton has shown time and again that he is more than capable of making a sports movie work. However, when his 1999 feature Play It to the Bone was released, it was a total box office flop despite having a massive cast of familiar faces. Critics panned it, fans were left unsatisfied, and the film wasn’t even able to break even on its $24 million budget. Essentially, it was a failure on every front. Today, it holds a miserable 11% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
After 25 years, though, it might be time to revisit the film. It’s not all bad — the story follows two aging boxers: Vince Boudreau (Woody Harrelson) and Cesar Dominguez (Antonio Banderas). When an opportunity arises for these two good friends to have one last fight, they happily take the chance. The...

The modern idea of Kevin Costner is vastly different from what it was back in the 1980s. Kevin Costner might be most known today for his long-form vanity projects, like Yellowstone and the four-part Horizon: An American Saga, but he was at one point an adaptable Swiss army knife of an actor and filmmaker. He dabbled in everything from disaster films to mob thrillers, all the way to classic comedies, but since the beginning, hes been particularly involved with two specific subgenres. He made his interest in Western epics known from the very beginning, with Dances With Wolves, JFK, and The Postman, but he also found a second niche that he managed to make entirely his own.
Kevin Costner is synonymous with the baseball movie, and for good reason.

For comedy fans of a certain age, watching VHS copies of the 1982 concert film “Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip” until the tape fell off of the spools was a rite of passage. Until Eddie Murphy‘s “Raw” dethroned it later in the 1980s, it was the most successful stand-up special of all time, and understandably so; marking Pryor‘s return to the stage after the freebasing accident that almost killed him, it was not only hilarious but revealing and poignant — the passage toward the end of the film in which Pryor personifies his crack pipe and acts out his own struggles with it is one of the most potent depictions of addiction ever put on screen.
The problem is that those VHS copies, as well as the blurry transfers on cable television where “Sunset Strip” was a staple for years, captured the greatness of Pryor’s performance but...

Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros Discovery's joint venture, Venu Sports, has hit a massive hurdle courtesy of a federal judge. Plans for this latest giant in the sports broadcasting industry were announced earlier this year, but another key player, Fubo, hit Venu with a devastating blow. Despite initial plans to come together for a one-of-a-kind sports offering, the collaborative effort will have to wait a while longer to potentially come to fruition. Following the press release in February regarding the new Disney streaming bundle, Fubo, a livestreaming service with a focalization on sports, filed a federal lawsuit to halt the venture. Unfortunately for the sports bundle, the judge swung her gavel on the side of Fubo, stating:
"Once the Jv launches, the Jv defendants have no reason to take actions that could allow for the emergence of direct competitors. Quite the opposite: the multi-year monopolistic runway they have created...

When Kurt Russell shed his Disney child star image once and for all as the leathery, laconic renegade Snake Plissken in John Carpenter's dystopian action hit "Escape from New York," he seemed poised for a long career as a handsome, rough-and-tumble leading man, the John Wayne-Steve McQueen hybrid America needed now that both had hit the soil. Russell, however, had other plans.
For starters, Russell didn't dig the laconic shtick. After a tonally similar performance as the perpetually cheesed-off R.J. MacReady in Carpenter's "The Thing," the actor sought to send up his tough-guy persona in goofball action flicks like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Tango & Cash." He also gleefully made a fool of himself in broad comedies (memorably/infamously in "Overboard" and "Captain Ron"), while playing in-over-their-heads everymen in thrillers like "The Mean Season" and "Unlawful Entry." He could still do the gruff act when...

Bring up the films of John Carpenter to any movie buff worth their weight in celluloid, and once they finish praying in the direction of Bowling Green, Kentucky, they'll start in on the essentials –- i.e. every movie in his oeuvre stretching from 1974's "Dark Star" to 1988's "They Live." From here, they'll single out 1994's "In the Mouth of Madness" as a return to peak form after the disappointing "Memoirs of an Invisible Man," and maybe share kind words about "Escape from L.A." "Vampires," "Ghosts of Mars," and, heck, even "The Ward." But that '74 -- '88 run is considered sacrosanct. You don't dispute this, and if you're fortunate enough to be a working filmmaker, you think long and hard about the wisdom of remaking one of these classics should a studio ever offer you the opportunity.
This is because Carpenter's aesthetic is inimitable. The widescreen compositions, the long takes,...

Ron Shelton's "Dark Blue" was a victim of impossible expectations. James Ellroy wrote the screenplay in 1993 (then titled "The Plague Season"), envisioning Kurt Russell in the role of racist LAPD Sergeant Eldon Perry. The story takes place in a jittery city awaiting the riot-inciting verdict of the Rodney King trial. We know what's coming in the macro, but the micro tale of Perry and his partner Bobby Keough (Scott Speedman) being forced to frame a couple of ex-cons for murders committed by informants loyal to their corrupt superior Jack Van Meter (Brendan Gleeson) could break either way. This being Ellroy, the master of corrosive neo-l.A. noir, we're expecting everything to go down twisted. But with the riots looming, Perry and Keough's errand feels destined to get extra messy.
Given its long road to a greenlight, "Dark Blue" acquired the aura of a passion project for Ellroy. And since he tended to spin sprawling,...

Is Bad Boys II Michael Bay’s best-worst movie? Is it the most entertaining, so-bad-its-good mainstream action movie ever made?
If the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing and expecting different results, then one could argue Michael Bay is downright certifiable. After all, who announces their directorial debut with a movie as bold and brash as Bad Boys and proceeds to repeat, nay, magnify the same screenwriting mistakes in the critically panned sequel Bad Boys II? Then again, does it even matter? Despite being released eight years after the original, Bad Boys II may have been eviscerated by critics but proved to be bulletproof among the moviegoing masses. Instead of taking precise measures to tighten the story and bolster the witty banter between Miami Narcotics officers Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, Bay doubled down on the explosive action set-pieces and visceral chase sequences. The bet paid off so...

Kevin Costner was on a roll with his baseball-based movies in the 1980s & ’90s, starting with the 1988 film Bull Durham. The film featured Costner in the role of veteran catcher ‘Crash’ Davis, who is brought in to teach rookie pitcher Nuke, played by Tim Robbins. The film was a critical and commercial success, but it was also a topic of discussion among some online fans for one scene in the film. It is rumored that Costner made a young bat boy cry during the film.

Kevin Costner has starred in over 10 sports-themed movies, with baseball being his most frequent focus. Costner's sports movies are not just about the sport itself, but aim to evoke emotions and connect with viewers on a personal level. Despite his success in baseball movies, basketball is actually Costner's first sports passion, and he has yet to star in a sports movie about it.
Kevin Costner is a renowned movie and TV star and an Oscar-winning director, but he is also the king of sports movies. Before the actor got to play iconic roles, such as Jonathan Kent, Superman's adoptive father in Man of Steel, and John Dutton in the western drama Yellowstone, he kept a powerful relationship with baseball, and although this career as a player didn't work out, he managed to bring his passion for the sport to the movies.

Susan Sarandon's best film is argued to be Bull Durham from 1988, where she delivers a captivating performance as Annie Savoy. "Bull Durham" is a quintessential baseball movie, evoking the magic of a small-town ballpark and featuring a strong ensemble cast. Sarandon's chemistry with Kevin Costner in the film is electric, and her portrayal of Annie showcases her talent for being sexy, funny, and powerful simultaneously.
One of the most interesting actors of her generation, Susan Sarandon, has been in so many blockbusters that it is hard to even keep count. Even now, she is making quality movies that people are clamoring to see. However, the debate rages as to which is her best film.
Even as she continues to leave her mark on Hollywood, her early work may be the best representation of her star power. One of her forgotten movies, Bull Durham, is still her best.
How Do I Know Susan Sarandon?...

Bull Durham is a 1988 sports romance comedy starring Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner in its lead roles, and there is real-life inspiration behind Costner's veteran baseball catcher Crash Davis. While Costner is better known today for taking on the complex role of John Dutton in the Western series Yellowstone, Costner starred in multiple baseball movies during the beginning of his career. Though his most well-known baseball flick is arguably Field of Dreams, Bull Durham is a close second in terms of its legacy, being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay and two Golden Globes.

Exclusive: Sad update on the plan to bring the story about the 2021 California School for the Deaf football team to the small screen; the limited series is not moving forward.
After several months in production, the project from ABC Signature and Disney Branded Television was shuttered earlier this year as part of the parent company’s massive wave of cuts.
The studio had partnered with the school and the California Department of Education to tell the story of the team’s historical undefeated season and how it earned a spot in the California State Championship game for the first time in school history. Historically a team that had never experienced anything close to a winning season, they went undefeated all the way to the state title game in their magical season.
The untitled project for Disney+ was set to star Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) as the team’s coach.

White Men Can’t Jump (2023) star Laura Harrier knows what it’s like to be the newcomer on set. After all, it wasn’t too long ago that she made what she considers to be her feature film debut opposite Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). So, in Calmatic’s new take on Ron Shelton’s 1992 classic, White Men Can’t Jump, Harrier found herself welcoming rapper Jack Harlow to his first movie set and serving as the more experienced scene partner.
Harrier plays Tatiana, a dancer and choreographer who begins to lose her patience with her longtime boyfriend, Jeremy (Harlow), as the former college basketball player just can’t let go of his hoop dreams. Fortunately, unlike their characters, Harrier and Harlow didn’t take long to get on the same page.

Harrelson was known for starring in Cheers, Snipes from Mo’ Better Blues, New Jack City, and Jungle Fever. Individually, they held a certain bravado and cocksure likability that allowed them, and in turn, White Men Can’t Jump, to reach great heights. The movie was a hit, capturing the zeitgeist of early 1990s sports, competition, and the love of a game, specifically basketball.
In the 2023 version of White Men Can't Jump, director Calmatic, coming off of House Party, never quite scores as big as the original, and even if you didn’t have that to compare it to, you don’t walk away from the outing feeling invigorated as much as you sense the filmmakers want you to be. Sure, this White Men Can’t Jump, which stars Jack Harlow and Sinqua Walls, can be enjoyable,...

White Men Can’t Jump, which was first released in 1992, has gotten the remake treatment. It isn’t the first film, or the last, from the last 50 years to be adapted for modern audiences. Nostalgia has dominated the public consciousness, or so the studios say. So, let’s picture this: You want to watch White Men Can’t Jump, and there are now two versions on Hulu with 2023 remake, which was directed by Calmatic from a screenplay by Kenya Barris and Doug Hall. The trend says that the choice is to watch the new one, but is that the right one?
The film follows two former NBA hopefuls, Kamal Allen (Sinqua Walls) and Jeremy (Jack Harlow). Kamal makes ends meet with a job as a delivery man to provide for his wife, Imani (Teyana Taylor), a hairdresser dreaming of opening a salon, and their son, Drew (Aiden Shute). Kamal has lost his...

During a fraught time for L.A., the team behind the 1992 original White Men Can’t Jump took a shot on a personal story about the bonds forged through pickup basketball.
Writer-director Ron Shelton — who had helmed 1988’s Bull Durham, earning himself an Oscar nom for the script — got the idea for the film from his weekday routine: After working on screenplays in the morning, he would head to the Hollywood Ymca near his office to shoot hoops at lunch. White Men producer David V. Lester recalls Shelton’s fascination with the athletes’ squabbles and chatter.
“It annoyed him at first because he just wanted a workout, but the writer in him saw the magic of these moment-to-moment relationships on the basketball court,” Lester tells The Hollywood Reporter.

A memorable scene from Ron Shelton’s 1992 hoops comedy White Men Can’t Jump finds a playground baller (played by former NBA great Marques Johnson) fuming after he falls victim to a hustle. First the big guy pulls out a razor. Then he decides he needs something a little stronger, so he heads to his car to retrieve his gun – at which point everyone scrambles madly for the exits. Based on a real-life chapter of basketball lore, the moment is both scary (perhaps even more so now, when all public space...

So, do you have an appetite for sports films after the entertaining true life-inspired Air from a few weeks ago? To be more specific do you have, as Cheech and Chong most famously proclaimed, a “basketball jones”? Oh, here’s the movie for you! Now unlike the earlier film, this isn’t set in the 1980s, though it has a connection to a previous decade. And it’s not “inspired by true events”. This is more of a rollicking “buddy comedy” and is a remake of a movie from over 30 years ago (the decade being the 1990s). Perhaps it will once and for all either prove this true or false per the still provocative title, White Men Can’T Jump.
