Demolition Man | Why Nigel Hawthorne hated making the film
Image
Nigel Hawthorne once wrote of his experience making Demolition Man opposite Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes – and it’d be fair to say he wasn’t a fan.

The late, great Nigel Hawthorne left behind following his death in 2001 a wonderful, cherishable collection of screen credits. What’s more, he wrote about them in his terrific memoir, Straight Face, that he completed shortly before his passing, and was published posthumously. The Madness Of King George and his role as Sir Humphrey in Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister took pride of place in a terrific list of credits.

But one film that Hawthorne wasn’t a fan of was his Hollywood debut.

He devoted in the aforementioned book just three pages to his experience of working on the 1993 science fiction blockbuster Demolition Man, a movie for which I confess to having no little love. It was fair to say that...

The opening scene of Predator 2 is awesome!
Image
The opening of a movie can make or break it. Too fast or show too much and the rest of the movie will struggle to match it. Too slow or not have a hook in the audience and you lose them permanently before the really good stuff hits. A sequel should have an easier time with it because when released theatrically anyway, it should have a bigger budget and know what the first movie did in the first place to be successful let alone be able to mimic some of the better scenes. One of the best to ever do it is a shocking choice, but the first 16 minutes of Stephen Hopkins Predator 2 are some of the best and most draw you in 16 minutes you’ll find. While the movie wasn’t nearly the smash success that its predecessor was with box office, critical reception, or even the fanbase for a while,...

Guy Ritchie at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Road House 2: Guy Ritchie drops out as director, leaving Amazon scrambling to find a replacement
Guy Ritchie at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Amazon MGM Studios will have to find a new director for Road House 2, as Guy Ritchie has reportedly dropped out of the project. No reason has been given for the exit, but the studio still plans on kicking off production this fall, so the search for a new director is underway.

After it was clear that Doug Liman wouldn’t return to direct the sequel, Amazon MGM Studios entered talks with Ritchie three months ago. He seemed like he would be a good fit for the franchise, and might even have been able to right a few of the wrongs fans had with the previous outing. Alas, it’s not to be.

Dave Bautista considering joining Jake Gyllenhaal in Road House 2
Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal will return for Road House 2, and Deadline hears that Dave Bautista may join him. At least, the offer is out there, but talks with the Guardians of the Galaxy actor haven’t begun.

Gyllenhaal facing off against Bautista — assuming they’re adversaries — would be something to see. Guy Ritchie will direct the Road House sequel for Amazon MGM Studios from a script by Will Beall (Bad Boys: Ride or Die).

The Road House remake was a massive hit for Prime Video, attracting over 50 million global viewers in its first two weeks of release. Despite the mixed reviews, getting the ball rolling on a sequel was a no-brainer. It’s clear why Doug Liman isn’t returning for the sequel, as the director was particularly vocal about his battles with Amazon over the company’s choice not to release the film in theaters.

Writer/Director Shane Black Teases Ideas For ‘The Nice Guys 2’ Amid Hollywood Challenges
Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in The Nice Guys (2016)
Photo Credit: Warner Bros If you’ve ever seen the 2016 buddy action/comedy masterpiece, The Nice Guys, you’re probably already nodding along. Starring the incredibly attractive duo of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, Shane Black—the undisputed king of the genre—delivered what many of us consider his most purely enjoyable film. Set in the gritty, groovy ’70s, it’s a detective mystery that’s equal parts humorous hijinks and riveting plot twists. So why, after years of passionate fan demand, are we still waiting for a sequel? As SlashFilm.com recently reported in an insightful piece diving into Shane Black’s latest updates, the path to The Nice Guys 2 is less a breezy car chase and more a tangled bureaucratic nightmare. The core issue? Money, of course. Black himself, in a featurette from the movie’s new 4K release, laid out the harsh realities. He highlights that despite...

‘Swordfish’ 4K Uhd Review (Arrow Video)
Image
Stars: Hugh Jackman, John Travolta, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle, Sam Shepard, Vinnie Jones, Drea de Matteo, Rudolf Martin, Zach Grenier, Camryn Grimes | Written by Skip Woods | Directed by Dominic Sena

Question… What do Hugh Jackman, John Travolta, Halle Berry and Don Cheadle have in common? No, we are not talking about how they have all been in comic book movies! They were actually all together in one film that has become a cult classic over the years.

In 2001, Dominic Sena directed an epic thriller entitled Swordfish. It is hard to believe, but this film is coming up on its Silver Anniversary. But before it gets to that anniversary, Arrow Video has decided to give Swordfish a just as epic 4K UltraHD release.

Former master hacker Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman) is on parole after getting caught infiltrating an FBI program. Even so much as glancing at a computer could send him straight back to prison,...

Swordfish: Does this “high tech” thriller hold up 24 years later?
Image
People may not appreciate now just how much of an impact The Matrix had on action films. It came out in the spring of 1999; by the summer of 2000, every movie was copying it. That’s why you had Jet Li doing wire-fu in Romeo Must Die, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt packing two pistols (and wearing a black leather trench coat) to Limp Bizkit performing the Mission: Impossible Theme in M:i:2, and the gals of Charlie’s Angels doing bullet time stunts. It changed the genre for a while, but one of the movies that owes the most to The Matrix is a little-remembered would-be summer blockbuster called Swordfish.

Not coincidentally, it was produced by Joel Silver, the man who produced The Matrix. It would include A Lot of nods to that film, including a massive opening bullet time explosion, a techno soundtrack by Paul Oakenfold (who had several tracks in...

The Matrix: This Deleted Scene Could Have Explained Neo’s True Role but Was Never Released
Image
The Matrix’s Secret Scene Exposed A Truth The Wachowskis Didn’t Want You To Know About The One (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

The Matrix was lightning in a bottle. A perfect blend of cyberpunk cool, philosophical intrigue, and revolutionary filmmaking. But somewhere between that first trench coat flip and the CGI chaos of Revolutions, things got messy. Why? Because the so-called “master plan” was never as bulletproof as they sold it.

We’ve all heard it — interviews, DVD extras, press tours: The Matrix trilogy was always meant to be a complete story. Neo’s journey, the twist about The One, and the Machine war was all part of one big, glorious narrative. That’s the official pitch.

Except… it’s not the truth.

The reality? The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions reek of retroactive storytelling. And the proof isn’t some Reddit theory. It’s in two key deleted scenes...

Jack Black Ruined His Role In A Sylvester Stallone Sci-Fi Movie
Image
When "School of Rock" debuted in 2003, it felt as if Jack Black just came out of nowhere to assert himself as one of the best comedic stars of the early 2000s. A man with his outsized charisma seemed like he could march into a Hollywood studio and charm the execs into giving him a leading role, and that's very much how it felt for kids who saw his breakthrough family comedy. In reality, of course, things didn't quite work that way.

Black's breakout role actually came three years prior with 2000's "High Fidelity," after which he showed up in films like "Shallow Hal" and "Orange County" before gifting us all with the unendingly charming classic that is "School of Rock," becoming a superstar in the process. He's remained in the spotlight ever since, most recently by leading the box office smash that is "A Minecraft Movie." But if you cast...

‘Die Hard’ Dream Team Almost Made ‘Sgt. Rock’ Until Clint Eastwood Botched It
Image
DC Comics Sgt. Rock is one of the most famous characters of all time, backed by a prolific comic book legacy. Despite several attempts to bring the character to live-action several times over the years, no such project has been able to make it past the development stage.

While DC Studios recently canceled a Sgt. Rock film under director Luca Guadagnino, there was once a time that the Die Hard team almost came close to making a live-action film. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the iconic character, the project unfortunately fell apart, all thanks to Clint Eastwood.

‘Die Hard’ Dream Team Almost Made ‘Sgt. Rock’ Until Clint Eastwood Botched It
Image
It’s truly a sad event for a fan when one of the most promising movies of the 80s never made it to the big screens, all because of a location request. That’s right, the same happened with Sgt. Rock. The movie has Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead, and the creative powerhouse team behind Die Hard to back it up.

With such a dream lineup, it was already promising to be a massive hit, but behind the scenes, a surprising twist derailed it all, and it also had a unique Clint Eastwood connection.

How did Clint Eastwood accidentally derail an Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster?

All the way back in the 1980s, Hollywood was all set to make a big action-packed movie called Sgt. Rock based on the popular DC comics character. Everything seemed to be on the right track with Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the biggest action stars of the time,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Almost Played DC's Sgt. Rock – And Then It Fell Apart
Image
Warner Bros. threw the film industry a curveball when it abruptly shut down pre-production on Luca Guadagnino's "Sgt. Rock." The DC Studios production carried a $70 million budget (reasonable for a studio war flick based on a comic book), had attracted a killer cast that included Colin Farrell (who took over the role from Daniel Craig) and Mike Faist and David Jonsson, and was set to shoot this summer. Some felt it was an odd choice for Guadagnino, but he's made a career out of odd choices. I still don't know if I like his earth-tone remake of Dario Argento's "Suspiria," but I respect the audacity. To his maverick credit, Guadagnino's "Sgt. Rock," which got greenlit primarily because DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran flipped for "Challenger" writer Justin Kuritzkes' screenplay, almost certainly wouldn't have been the "Sgt. Rock" movie I've been clamoring for since the late 1980s.

Guy Ritchie at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Get ready to put up your dukes and down some shots because Guy Ritchie is officially signed on the dotted line to direct Road House 2 at Amazon MGM Studios. Guy Ritchie directs Road House 2 from a script by Will Beal, whose writing credits include the screenplays for DC’s Aquaman and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Gyllenhaal will produce Road House 2 with Josh McLaughlin through their Nine Stories Productions studio with Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment. Plot details remain a mystery.

Guy Ritchie to Direct ‘Road House 2’ for Amazon MGM Studios
Image
“Road House 2” at Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Guy Ritchie to direct the follow-up action film that will star Jake Gyllenhaal, IndieWire has confirmed.

The sequel to 2024’s remake was announced way back in May of last year after the film got off to an impressive start of 80 million views in its first eight weeks on Prime Video, but this is the first update we’ve gotten since then.

Ritchie will take over for Doug Liman, who originally vented to IndieWire about his frustration that the film went straight to streaming rather than be released theatrically, which was a fallout of the film originally being greenlit at MGM before it was acquired by Amazon. Liman complained that the rug pull left people without compensation, though it was reported that Liman was offered a higher budget in exchange for making the film for streaming.

Luca Guadagnino’s DC Movie ‘Sgt. Rock’ Scrapped | Exclusive
Image
Well, there’s one less soldier on the DC Studios battlefield.

“Sgt. Rock,” to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by his “Challengers” and “Queer” collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, is no longer moving forward at DC Studios, TheWrap has exclusively learned. Colin Farrell, already a part of the DC Comics universe thanks to his role as The Penguin in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and the HBO spinoff series “The Penguin,” was in talks to play the title character after Daniel Craig dropped out.

The issue, one insider noted, came down to scheduling. The film, which would require a lot of exterior shoots, needed to start production this summer and wasn’t going to make its date. Budget didn’t appear to be an issue — it was meant to come in under $70 million, which for a high-priority comic book adaptation, is a bargain.

DC Studios had no comment.

The character, a...

Wtf Happened to The Last Boy Scout?
Image
Bruce Willis has made a career out of playing men who look like they haven’t slept since the late ‘80s, and The Last Boy Scout is no exception. Released in 1991, this action-packed, expletive-riddled, buddy-cop-adjacent flick directed by Tony Scott and written by Shane Black was basically Die Hard‘s rowdier, more foul-mouthed cousin. And yet, despite its A-list talent and explosive action, it somehow ended up as one of the most overlooked gems of the early ‘90s.

Now, let’s get one thing straight—I loved this movie growing up. So much so that I practically ran my VHS copy into the ground, forcing the poor tape to endure countless rewatches until it finally tapped out. Rip to that beautiful, plastic relic. Hopefully, the DVD holds out a little longer.

So, what the f*** happened? How did this film, with all its star power and razor-sharp dialogue, become more...

Romeo Must Die: Remember this hip hop Jet Li flick?
Image
It can’t be denied that in the eighties and nineties, the action movies coming out of Hong Kong revolutionized the industry. Marrying the kinetic style of seventies grid house martial arts epics with the technological innovations and kinetic energy of the best American action movies of the era, directors like John Woo, Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam, and stars like Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-Fat made a huge mark internationally. In the mid-nineties, and in the face of Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to China, many of the biggest names from the scene found their way to America, and outside of Jackie Chan and John Woo, arguably the most successful transition was made by martial arts superstar Jet Li.

A former member of the Bejing Wushu team, Li’s arguably became the biggest martial arts movie star since Bruce Lee. Sure, Jackie Chan movies maybe made more money, but they,...

The Penguin Star Colin Farrell In Talks To Play Sgt. Rock For DC Studios And Luca Guadagnino
Image
In a surprising turn of events, Colin Farrell - who plays Oz Cobb/The Penguin in Matt Reeves' BatVerse - is in talks to play the lead role in DC Studios and director Luca Guadagnino's Sgt. Rock movie.

Though Farrell has entered negotiations to play Sgt. Franklin John Rock in the WWII-set film. Deadline believes that scheduling "has to be balanced with his busy fall which includes the second season of AppleTV+’s Sugar and Edward Berger’s movie The Ballad of a Small Player."

Daniel Craig was said to be in talks to play the title role (though DC Studios co-head Peter Safran insists this was not the case), but reportedly passed due to a scheduling conflict and is now circling Greta Gerwig's Narnia movie. ‘Novocaine’ Directors on Paying Tribute to ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Lethal Weapon’ with a New Kind of Action Hero in Jack Quaid
Image
Directors Robert Olsen and Dan Berk are well known to horror fans for smart, scary, and sometimes quite funny thrillers like “Body,” “Villains,” and “Significant Other.” With their latest film, “Novocaine,” the precise and expressive visual style of those early films remains, but the genre is new: The story of a mild-mannered banker (Jack Quaid) on a quest to save his kidnapped new girlfriend (Amber Midthunder) is a full-on action movie packed with exhilarating set pieces.

For Berk and Olsen, getting the chance to play in Richard Donner and John McTiernan’s sandbox was a long-held dream finally realized.

“We’ve wanted to make an action movie for a very long time, but it’s really hard early in your career,” Berk told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “No one’s going to give you the 20-plus-million dollars you need to make an action movie for your first feature.”

Sylvester Stallone Starred In A Legendarily Bad Video Game Based On One Of His Hits
Image
By 1993, Sylvester Stallone's career was in a precarious place. The "Rocky" and "Rambo" star hadn't yet reached the stage where he could be described as washed up — a point he arguably reached by the early 2000s before reviving his career with the excellent "Rocky Balboa." But the early '90s were a tricky time for Stallone. His last "Rambo" movie, 1988's "Rambo III" had failed to make as much as its predecessor and his last "Rocky" movie, 1990's "Rocky V" was a historic low point for the franchise that originally made Sly a star. Once Arnold Schwarzenegger tricked Stallone into starring in the 1992 flop "Stop! Or my Mom will Shoot," the man's career was in serious jeopardy.

In 1993, however, Stallone had somewhat of a mini comeback, starting with mountain climbing action thriller "Cliffhanger," which was not only a commercial success but managed to impress enough critics that it seemed...

Challengers Star Mike Faist Rumored To Be In Consideration To Play Sgt. Rock
Image
Luca Guadagnino may not seem like the most obvious fit to helm a comic book/superhero project, but the filmmaker has now been confirmed as director for the planned Sgt. Rock movie.

Guadagnino is set to re-team with his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, who is on board to pen the script. The project is said to be a "period piece set during World War II."

Daniel Craig was said to be in talks to play the title role (though DC Studios co-head Peter Safran insists this was not the case), but reportedly passed due to a scheduling conflict. Now, scooper Mttsh is reporting that Mike Faist - who also worked with Guadagnino on Challengers - is being considered for the part.

If this is accurate, Faist (33) would obviously be playing a significantly younger take on the character.

We've been hearing whispers of a potential Sgt. Rock movie for quite a while,...

Revisiting Demi Moore’s “Tales from the Crypt” Episode ‘Dead Right’
Image
Star gazing is unavoidable whenever watching Tales from the Crypt. In this beloved anthology series, you typically find actors who were in the early days of their career, but there were also occasions where even more established celebs were dying to work with the Cryptkeeper. One notable instance of the latter was in Season Two’s opener “Dead Right” — this macabre delivery of just deserts featured Demi Moore after she starred in Ghost, the top-grossing film of 1990, and it was shortly before she would go on to become the highest-paid actress of the decade.

Unlike other actors who sought out their spots in Tales from the Crypt, Moore was directly asked to star in an episode. “We were looking for the perfect person, and it occurred to us that the role [of Cathy Marno] was tailor-made for Demi Moore,” recalled Crypt producer William Teitler. And as luck would have it, Moore was a friend of co-producer Joel Silver.

“I tried to be as polite as possible”: The Wachowskis Didn’t Respect the Only Condition Alan Moore Had for ‘V for Vendetta’
Image
Alan Moore’s infamous dislike toward any and all adaptations of his works has been a very well-known and hotly debated topic in this industry. The author of such fundamentally revolutionary works as Watchmen and V for Vendetta has always kept himself at arm’s length from Hollywood, although the same cannot be said with the cases reversed.

One of the more controversial of his literary works is V for Vendetta whose anti-fascist commentary mixed with the morally and ethically corrupt protagonist of the story made it a difficult subject to convert into live-action. However, Hollywood did not shy away from the challenge, resulting in a fairly successful box-office movie that left Moore embittered to his core.

The Matrix Reloaded Is Actually a Great Sequel
Image
How many movies arrive with the seismic thunder of The Matrix? Debuting to little fanfare in 1999, the movie became a sensation. Suddenly, black leather, trenchcoats, and sleek sunglasses became all the rage. Other movies rushed to parody and pilfer the film’s fight choreography. And in a feat matched only by Star Wars, The Matrix spawned its own religion. Suffice it to say anticipation ran high for the arrival of The Matrix Reloaded four years later.

In another feat also only matched by Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Matrix Reloaded debuted to Leviathan hype. Warner Bros. promoted the film with 24-hour showings in cinemas, but this time, the audience walked away feeling cheated and confused. In fact, despite earning positive reviews and doing mammoth box office, The Matrix Reloaded gained — and still maintains — a reputation as one of the worst sequels of all time. Thus, the time has come...

Forget ‘The French Connection’ — the Best Chase Scene in American Movies Belongs to ‘Hollywood Homicide’
Image
Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.

What’s the greatest chase scene in American movies? One could easily make a convincing argument for the lengthy action sequence that anchors Buster Keaton’s “The General,” or for the kinetic urban set pieces of “Bullitt” and “The French Connection.” Movies like “Duel,” “The Driver,” and “Speed” are essentially feature-length chases broken up by occasional dialogue sequences, and for sheer scale, the final act of “The Blues Brothers” is tough to beat.

One movie that doesn’t get mentioned in this company but should is Ron Shelton’s 2003 action-comedy “Hollywood Homicide,” a film that...

Bruce Willis Initially Refused To Say One Of His Funny Lines In Die Hard 2
Image
Christmas 2024 saw Netflix deliver the latest in a seemingly infinite line of kinda cool action movies ultimately doomed to become the digital equivalent of fossils buried on the servers of the streaming giant. "Carry On" is an action thriller set in Lax, in which Taron Egerton's Tsa officer must thwart a plot to unleash a deadly nerve agent onboard a plane. In other words, it was a Christmas action movie set entirely in an airport, and was therefore inescapably indebted to "Die Hard 2."

That particular action sequel has a bit of a strange legacy, which extends beyond influencing middling Netflix movies. While the 1988 original sits atop pretty much every ranking of the "Die Hard" movies, 1990's "Die Hard 2" is surely a contender for second best. The legacy sequels discounted themselves from the conversation by turning Bruce Willis' John McClane into another generic superhero action archetype, which...

I'm Actually Relieved This Remake Of Kurt Russell's 1981 Action Movie With 86% On Rotten Tomatoes Is No Longer Happening
Image
Escape from New York is one of my favorite movies, so I'm glad the remake appears to have finally died in development. The original 1981 John Carpenter movie has one of the all-time great movie hooks; the most dangerous convict in the world, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), is forced to rescue the kidnapped President from New York, which has been walled off and turned into a hellish prison. Escape from New York is one of Carpenter's best, filled with great sequences and dialogue.

I've always felt that one minor flaw is that the film's modest budget meant it couldn't fully use its setting. Escape From New York's action is relatively small-scale, and it doesn't take audiences to some of the city's most iconic locations, like Central Park or the subway. In theory, a big-budget reboot could really flesh out the concept and make it much larger, but the Escape from New York...

16 Years Ago, the Wachowski Sisters Made 1 of the Best Live-Action Anime Adaptations of All Time
Image
Anime is one of the most celebrated art forms in the world, with a history stretching back more than 100 years and a significant international cultural legacy dating back to the 1960s. After the legendary cartoonist Osamu Tezuka created the template that most anime would base itself on with the classic Astro Boy, the form exploded into a juggernaut that continues to dominate film and television.

One of the oldest and most venerated anime series of all time is Speed Racer, becoming one of the first series to be successfully imported into America. When the legendary American directors the Wachowski sisters were able to adapt the classic anime Speed Racer into a live-action film, audiences were stunned by how faithful the adaptation was to the original source material.

The Wachowski Sisters Understand How to Adapt Anime

After decades of living in development hell, Lana and Lilly Wachowski teamed up with producer Joel Silver,...

Jason Momoa to Play Lobo in DC’s ‘Supergirl’ Movie
Image
Jason Momoa is staying in the DC Studios family.

The actor, who previously appeared as Aquaman in several DC comics films including two standalones, will co-star as Lobo the intergalactic bounty hunter in the upcoming “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Milly Alcock plays the title role, with direction being handled by Craig Gillespie. It’s currently scheduled to start shooting next month in London and Iceland and will be released on June 26, 2026.

Momoa had long lobbied to play the character, basically an outer space biker and who was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in “Omega Men” #3 back in June 1983. Over the years, various attempts at giving the character his own film have been mounted. In 2009 Guy Ritchie took on the project, with Brad Peyton and Joel Silver attempting the project in 2012 (with Dwayne Johnson in talks to play the character). As recently as 2018, Michael Bay looked to make the movie,...

Bruce Willis Takes Pride In One Of His Most Notorious Flops
Image
Prior to its release in 1991, there was every reason to believe that Michael Lehmann's heist comedy "Hudson Hawk" would be a hit. It was written by star screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who had already had gigantic success with film like "48 Hrs.," "Commando," "Jumping Jack Flash," and "The Running Man." His biggest smash was "Die Hard" in 1988, and he was tapped to write the sequel two years later. "Hudson Hawk" would re-team de Souza with "Die Hard" star Bruce Willis, and the film would boast performances from Danny Aiello, fresh from "Moonstruck," as well as James Coburn, Richard E. Grant, Sandra Bernhard, and Andie MacDowell. Lehmann, meanwhile, also had a big cult success in 1988 with "Heathers." Never mind that his bonkers mutant-bug movie "Meet the Applegates" bombed in 1990. The sensibility was there.

"Hudson Hawk" is an odd duck. Willis plays the titular cat burglar, freshly released from prison,...

What Happened to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?
Image
If you were a young writer with dreams of making it big in Hollywood, you couldn’t have a much better origin story than Shane Black. Just out of film school in his early 20s, Black famously sold his spec script Lethal Weapon to producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros., nabbing over $200 thousand for his work. Lethal Weapon was a significant hit in 1987, effectively putting Black on the map; combine that with the fact he also co-wrote The Monster Squad and starred in and script-doctored Predator that same year and you have a very nice start to a career.

In the 90s, Black became famous—or infamous—for two blockbuster screenplay sales. The Last Boy Scout sold for a record $1.75 million, a record at the time. A couple of years later, his script for The Long Kiss Goodnight made history when he got paid a whopping $4 million for it, still...

Demi Moore Almost Starred as Elphaba in a 1990s ‘Wicked’ Film, With Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer Top of Mind for Glinda
Image
Two decades ago, the Wicked movie could’ve looked very different.

In a joint conversation with Vanity Fair, Marc Platt, who produced the 2024 film, Wicked author Gregory Maguire and composer Stephen Schwartz recalled the first efforts in the late 1990s to turn the story into a feature film.

He detailed a world in which stars like Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman and more were interested in playing the beloved roles of Elphaba and Glinda, which eventually went to Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in this year’s adaptation of the musical.

“I am going to try and get the timeline right if I can remember, but I believe when I became the president of production at Universal, the project was already here,” Platt said. “It had been optioned initially by Demi Moore’s company.”

Platt knew that Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of...

Bruce Willis hated this Die Hard 2 line and the making of a neglected Christmas classic
Image
Last year, when Renny Harlin was promoting his film, The Bricklayer, JoBlo asked him about the making of Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and he had high praise for star Bruce Willis, who he compared, favourably, to the new generation of action stars, who seem reluctant to ever allow themselves to get beaten up on-screen, Willis never had this issue, said Harlin: “I really wanted Bruce Willis to get really screwed up. His face is a bloody mess by the end of the movie, and like you said, it really does make the character more heroic. They are really taking punishment and keep going.”

However, as we reported a little while back, there was one line Willis didn’t love in Die Hard 2: Just the fax, ma’am…

It’s a line that made audiences laugh, but, in his book “The Last Action Heroes,” writer Nick de Semlyan interviews Harlin,...

Review: Marco Brambilla’s ‘Demolition Man’ on Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Take the toughest, most ruthless cop and pit him against the most brutally sadistic criminal in a near-future Los Angeles—a hellish vision of the city that presupposes that the 1992 riots never stopped—and you’ve got a quintessential early-’90s Hollywood action film setup. Marco Brambilla’s Demolition Man starts in 1996, but after John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) and Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) are frozen in a cryogenic prison after a deadly square-off, they awaken again in 2032, only to be greeted by a sanitized, peaceful “utopia” in which swearing, smoking, meat-eating, “gasoline, uneducational toys, and anything spicy” have been banned.

With the population effectively neutered, even the cops have been reduced to enforcing petty tickets, mere shells of their former hyper-violent selves. “We’re police officers. We’re not trained to handle this kind of violence,” Rob Schneider’s Erwin asserts upon seeing the freshly unfrozen Simon take out six cops who are armed,...

Wachowskis-Produced Ninja Action-Thriller Finds Streaming Success 15 Years After 26% Rt Failure
Image
A 2009 martial arts movie produced by the Wachowskis is performing well during its run on streaming. The Wachowskis made their directorial debut with the crime thriller Bound in 1996, after penning the screenplay for 1995 Sylvester Stallone movie Assassins. But the siblings shot to global fame when they wrote and directed the 1999 science fiction action film The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. The movie was met with widespread critical acclaim, and is considered a modern classic, as well as one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction films ever made.

Following the unexpected success of The Matrix, the duo wrote and directed The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions (both 2003), as well as expanding The Matrix franchise in the realm of video games and animation. Branching out from the series, they also wrote dystopian action movie V For Vendetta, as well as making sports action-comedy Speed Racer,...

A Denzel Washington Crime Thriller Was Originally Meant For Clint Eastwood
Image
There are five movies in the "Dirty Harry" series, in which Clint Eastwood embodies Inspector Harry Callahan, who emerges as an antihero figure unafraid to bend the rules. Although Callahan's methods are unorthodox, they are incredibly effective. "Go ahead, make my day," he drawls before brandishing a gun to apprehend criminals. When the "Dirty Harry" franchise was still looking for potential scripts, Fred Dekker — who penned the screenplay for 2018's "The Predator" — wrote a spec script that ended up being turned down by Eastwood. What exactly happened here?

Per Dekker himself, this rejected spec script for the "Dirty Harry" franchise was remodeled later into the 1991 crime thriller, "Ricochet," with Denzel Washington playing the lead role originally intended for Eastwood. Dekker told The Flashback Files that he had accidentally mirrored the plot of "Cape Fear" (which he claims to have not seen at the time) for his "Dirty Harry" installment...

George Clooney and Brad Pitt's 'Wolfs' Sequel was Canceled by Director Jon Watt
Image
Wolfs director Jon Watts has revealed the truth behind the unexpected cancelation of the planned sequel to the George Clooney and Brad Pitt movie. While it seemed that Apple had bailed on the previously announced follow-up to the streaming hit featuring two of Hollywoods biggest stars, the truth is even more shocking in this day and age, as Apple did not cancel the movie, Watts did.

Having made a name for himself with the MCUs Spider-Man trilogy, Watts moved away from superhero movies to write and direct Wolfs. The movie became the most viewed movie ever released on Apple TV+, and with a sequel already on the cards, Watts comments on Friday that it was not moving ahead came as a big surprise to many. Now, speaking to Deadline, the director has revealed the full story.

I showed Apple my final cut of Wolfs early this year. They were extremely...

‘Wolfs’ Director Jon Watts Tells Apple: No Sequel, I Don’t Trust You
Image
Jon Watts revealed in an interview with Collider that his planned sequel to the George Clooney and Brad Pitt-starring caper “Wolfs” would not go forward. Now he’s doubled down, telling Deadline in a statement that while he loved working with Brad Pitt and George Clooney he “no longer trusted [Apple] as a creative partner.”

“I loved working with Brad and George (and Amy and Austin and Poorna and Zlatko) and would happily do it again,” said Watts. “But the truth is that Apple didn’t cancel the ‘Wolfs’ sequel, I did, because I no longer trusted them as a creative partner.”

According to Watts, Apple was pleased by his cut of “Wolfs” and commissioned a sequel. And then: Instead of a wide release, Apple decided that “Wolfs” would spend one week in a limited number of theaters.

“I showed Apple my final cut of ‘Wolfs’ early this year,...

Daniel Craig Could Play An Unlikely DC Comics Hero, With An Even More Unlikely Director
Image
Fresh off of the critical success of their William S. Burroughs-spun odyssey, "Queer," director Luca Guadagnino and actor Daniel Craig are apparently teaming up once more, but this time for something a little bit different. According to Deadline, the duo are planning on working together on a "Sgt. Rock" film for DC Studios, with Guadagnino tackling this before he even gets around to the "American Psycho" reboot Lionsgate is apparently clamoring for.

Guadagnino and Craig have both seen a tremendous amount of success in the past few years, with Craig still delivering big hits and great performances in indie darlings long after his James Bond days have ended and Guadagnino knocking it out of the pack back-to-back with "Challengers" and "Queer" both in 2024. While the two both currently have the star power to make pretty much whatever they want, I can't imagine that anyone on the planet would have...

Sgt. Rock: Daniel Craig Rumored To Be Luca Guadagnino's First Choice To Play Title Role - Confirmed
Image
Update: Deadline has now confirmed that Craig is in talks to star, though no deals have been closed. The trade also believes that Sgt. Rock will be Guadagnino's next project.

Original article follows.

Luca Guadagnino may not seem like the most obvious fit to helm a comic book/superhero movie, but the filmmaker is believed to be in talks with DC Studios to direct an upcoming Dcu project.

Jeff Sneider first mentioned that Guadagnino was "being courted for a future Dcu movie" in his newsletter back in September, and Nexus Point News later weighed in, claiming to reveal the film he's in talks to direct.

Guadagnino is reportedly set to helm a Sgt. Rock movie, and his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes is on board to pen the script. The project is said to be a "period piece set during World War II."

Now, Nexus Point News has shared a very interesting update.

Samuel L. Jackson Reuniting With Director Renny Harlin for Action Thriller
Image
Renny Harlin was once the heir apparent to the coke-soaked '80s action empire built by John McTiernan, Joel Silver, and Shane Black. So the news of the Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2 director returning to high-octane cinema with The Beast is exciting for action fans who grew up with his follow-the-fun approach to filmmaking.

The Beast also reunites Harlin with Samuel L. Jackson, who he directed in the proto-shark-sploitation film Deep Blue Sea and the truly GOATed Christmas movie The Long Kiss Goodnight. The film's roster also includes Suicide Squad standout Joel Kinnaman and Guy Burnet of Oppenheimer. Harlin spoke to Deadline saying:

Sam is not just one of those screen icons, but also a dear friend, and joining forces for another action extravaganza has me inspired beyond belief. Joel Kinnaman is another magnetic talent and a good friend as well. Once in a while a new writer with...

‘The Invasion’ – Arrow Video Brings Body Snatching Movie Starring Nicole Kidman to 4K [Trailer]
Image
Don’t. Trust. Anyone. Arrow Video is set to release The Invasion starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig on 4K Uhd for the first time ever on November 11, and Bloody Disgusting is exclusively debuting the official trailer for the 4K restoration. Find it down below.

Since its first publication in 1955, Jack Finney’s classic sci-fi/horror novel The Body Snatchers has inspired numerous adaptations and created a whole subgenre of era-defining alien doppelgangers in books, film, and TV. 2007’s The Invasion was ahead of the curve, its eerily predictive shift toward a virus-like contagion more frighteningly resonant in a post-pandemic world.

In the 2007 adaptation of the classic tale, a space shuttle crashes to Earth carrying an alien organism. Soon people are changing, becoming detached and emotionless.
