Sean “Diddy” Combs scored a major legal victory this week as he managed to avoid the most serious of the sex trafficking and racketeering allegations in his criminal trial, leaving those in the music business questioning how an industry with a notoriously murky past in handling abusive behavior is going to move forward.
“I’m tired of living in a world where money, power, misogyny and patriarchy continues to win,” Tiffany Red, a prominent music industry advocate and a close friend of Cassie Ventura’s wrote on Instagram after the verdict went out Wednesday.
The chances of Combs’ image itself being significantly rehabilitated seems slim, given that violent, abusive behavior was caught on camera and aired to millions of people around the world. And Combs still faces a litany of civil suits that will continue to follow him for the foreseeable future. Whatever career he has to return to comes with a significant asterisk.

Russell Simmons has sued HBO and the filmmakers who made the Max original documentary “On the Record,” which examines the sexual assault allegations against the hip-hop and business mogul.
The lawsuit, which demands $20 million in damages and has been obtained by TheWrap, claims the doc defamed him and disregarded evidence he and his legal team presented to the entertainment company — proof he said supports his side of the alleged incidents. The film from Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick premiered on HBO’s streaming platform in 2020.
On Tuesday, Simmons’ lawyer, Imran Ansari, filed a four-page summons in New York’s Supreme Court. In the document, Ansari wrote that Ziering and Dick “disregard and/or suppressed” details of the alleged incidents. His team stated that these details were offered to then-WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey and chairman/CEO of HBO and Max Content Casey Bloys, as well as the company’s board members.

Update: A lot of time has passed since Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s documentary expose of Russell Simmons and allegations of sexual assault by the famed music executive aired on HBO Max, over five years.
Today, with court filings certain to follow, it didn’t take Warner Bros Discovery that long at all to respond to Simmons’ $20 million defamation suit against On the Record – and give no quarter.
“We dispute Mr. Simmons’ allegations, stand by the filmmakers and their process, and will vigorously defend ourselves against these unfounded allegations, a Wbd spokesperson told Deadline this morning, as a new round of layoffs hit the company’s cable TV units.
Maybe the Bali-residing Simmons will even show up in court to press his own case vigorously against that vigorous defense.

Warner Bros. Discovery has been sued by Russell Simmons, who alleges that the filmmakers behind On the Record defamed him by turning a blind eye to evidence disputing accusations that he sexually assaulted women in his orbit.
In a lawsuit filed in New York state court on Tuesday, Simmons brings claims for defamation, invasion of privacy and false advertising, among others. He seeks $20 million and a court order that would force Wbd to remove the title from its platforms.
On the Record tells the stories of Simmons’ accusers — including former Def Jam executive Drew Dixon, domestic violence awareness activist Sil Lai Abrams and screenwriter Jenny Lumet — as they decide to go public with allegations of sexual assault. It was produced by Oscar-nominated directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering via their production banner Jane Doe Films, all of whom are named in the complaint, with Dan Cogan for Impact Partners.

Sean "Diddy" Combs' case has opened a lot of suspicious Hollywood connections from Michael Jackson randomly attending his party to some tragic celebrity deaths. Now, he's also being linked with Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are seeking clemency after more than 30 years of incarceration over the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty.
While the connection isn't as close as Diddy's intimate relationships with his former protgs, it still raises red flags about the entertainment industry. Many believe it isn't a coincidence that the music mogul has this association with the Menendez brothers, who claim to have also been sexually abused by their father. Here's a closer look at Erik and Lyle's Hollywood connections.

A former Def Jam employee who says Russell Simmons pulled a “wrestling move” and raped her in his New York apartment in the mid-1990s is asking a judge to reject the hip-hop mogul’s claims he can’t be sued in federal court in New York because he’s now a “stateless” U.S. citizen who’s technically “retired” in Indonesia.

Fashion designer and former reality TV star Kimora Lee Simmons has been trying to tell the world about the dark side of Sean "Diddy" Combs for the past two decades, and now, the world is finally listening. The mother of five told the press about an altercation she had with Diddy in 2004, and it's only now that people are starting to hear her out.
In November 2023, Diddy's former partner of ten years, Cassie Ventura, sued him for $30 million for sexual and physical abuse. The two settled for an undisclosed amount. Nearly a year later, USA Today reported the rapper has over 120 claims coming his way after countless allegations of sex trafficking, racketeering, physical and sexual abuse, and transportation to solicit prostitution. Kimora's story is just the cherry on top of a long list of assertions against the disgraced music mogul.

For years, people have “heard grumblings and whispers” — as #MeToo founder Tarana Burke puts it — about the questionable behavior of Sean “Diddy” Combs.
“But I think the question,” Burke adds, “was there ever going to be any level of accountability?”
Five months ago, Combs’ life dramatically changed. Singer Cassie, the music mogul’s former partner and a recording artist, sued him for sexual assault and said he repeatedly raped and physically abused her for nearly a decade; they reached a settlement two days later. But subsequent lawsuits from more women followed with claims of rape and sexual assault, and in February producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones — who worked on Combs’ recent Grammy-nominated album — accused the entrepreneur of harassing and trafficking him. Christian Combs, the entertainer’s 26-year-old son, has been accused of sex assault in a lawsuit filed this week that also listed 54-year-old Combs as a defendant, multiple outlets reported.

Almost immediately after its founding in 1955, the Village Voice became the most raucous, irreverent and important alternative newspaper in America. At one point the Voice was the most read weekly in the country, serving as Andy Warhol put it “the entire liberal thinking world.” In her excellent new book The Freaks Came Out to Write: The Definitive History of the Village Voice, the Radical Paper That Changed American Culture, Voice veteran Tricia Romano has compiled an oral history of the seminal alt-weekly. Romano’s book is a vital and wildly...

Four survivor-led advocacy organizations — including those founded by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife and filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom — published a letter and report on Wednesday calling for the music business to take further action regarding sexual misconduct across the industry.
The report, titled “Sound Off: The Make Music Safe Report” compiled decades of previously disclosed allegations against over two dozen prominent artists and industry executives such as Sean “Diddy” Combs, Axl Rose, Anti-Flag’s Justin Geever, composer Danny Elfman, former Def Jam head Russell Simmons,...

Russell Simmons has been sued for defamation for allegedly trying to undermine sexual assault accusations made against him.
Drew Dixon, a former Def Jam Recordings executive who alleges she was raped by the music mogul in 1995, claims in a lawsuit filed on Thursday in New York’s state Supreme Court that Simmons engaged in a “concerted and malicious campaign to discredit” her with the aim of undercutting her rape accusations. Among other statements, Simmons said in an interview on a podcast in December, “Could someone want notoriety in the market where people thirst for fame” and “I’ve never been forceful in any of my relationships,” all of which were “consensual.”
The complaint was filed on the heels of another suit against Simmons for sexual assault and battery from an ex-executive at the label he cofounded, who sued as a Jane Doe.
