It's official: Michael, Antoine Fuqua's anticipated Michael Jackson musical biopic, has beat it out of this year's Oscar race.
As Gold Derby reported months ago, the Lionsgate film made an expected move from a planned Oct. 3 release to April 24, 2026.
Michael had been targeted as potential awards bait coming into 2025, but its fate seemed iffy when it was omitted from Lionsgate's CinemaCon presentation to movie theater exhibitors in April. This was a 180 from last year's CinemaCon when the studio shared a first look at Michael.
Weeks later, Lionsgate executives said the film was likely to shift into 2026 amid reports that the four-hour cut would be reconfigured as a two-part release. The two-fer is no longer on the table; instead, Fuqua has been given extra time to chop Michael down to a single film with a manageable running time.
The movie has been beset with controversy. In January, Puck reported that Michael,...

The Michael Jackson biopic from Lionsgate and Universal is looking to thrill audiences next year.
Director Antoine Fuqua’s Michael is set to hit theaters and Imax on April 24, 2026, after its release was delayed several times, most recently having been dated for the fall of 2025. Marking his feature debut is Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role as the pop music icon. Lionsgate is distributing the movie domestically, while Universal handles the global launch.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Michael was set for 22 days of additional photography to take place in June. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.Americans love bank robbers. It’s part of our shared mythos. As the song goes, Jesse James stole from the rich and gave to the poor, and the American cinematic canon has followed his example. From James to Butch Cassidy to Bonnie & Clyde and onward, our rebel outlaws have also been all-American entrepreneurs, moving fast and breaking stuff and reaping the perilous reward. Whether lone gunmen or skilled operators, all operate by a similar creed: In America, you get yours by any means necessary. In Christian Gudegast’s Den of Thieves (2018), it’s a gang of ex-Marines to answer this call. When their attempt to steal an armored car goes south, Ray (Pablo Schreiber) and his crew wipe out the responding officers using tactics they learned in Iraq. Dressed in black fatigues and tactical vests, they treat the parking lot of an outlying Los Angeles...

CinemaCon is all about studios showcasing to exhibitors what they have on their docket that they should be excited about. Lionsgate had its presentation and wisely revealed that John Wick would be coming back for a fifth round of action while also discussing how that universe would be expanding. Lionsgate also has what could be one of the biggest musical biopics on the schedule in Michael, a film directed by Antoine Fuqua that should get fans of Michael Jackson excited. It would be a project that a studio would want to showcase to exhibitors since it's supposed to open in the fall of this year, but it was noticeably absent from their presentation. Why was it missing in action? As it turns out, some of the issues have to do with how to release the film, and the other matter in question is if it will even release this year at all.

If you have Michael, Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson musical biopic, in your early 2026 Oscar predictions, you might want to make an adjustment. The film likely won't be released in 2025 and may be split into two movies, Deadline reports.
Michael's current cut runs nearly four hours, and the possibility of it being split into two parts is on the table but not definite yet, according to the trade. The Lionsgate film is currently scheduled to open on Oct. 3, but the date remains in flux.
This development is not surprising after Lionsgate offered no updates on Michael during its CinemaCon presentation to movie theater exhibitors on Tuesday. This was a 180 from last year's CinemaCon when the studio shared a first look at Michael.

Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” may be split into two movies. As a result, the Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International project will likely push its current Oct. 3 release date.
While “Michael” was a major part of last year’s Lionsgate CinemaCon presentation, no footage from the project was shown during this year’s outing. The film, produced by “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” Graham King, wrapped principal photography in May 2024, but John Logan’s script is in the process of being revised in advance of reshoots.
“Michael,” which carries a roughly $155 million budget, stars Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, who makes his screen debut in the film. Colman Domingo and Nia Long will play family heads Joe and Katherine Jackson, while Miles Teller will play Jackson’s attorney and advisor John Branca. It remains almost impossible to believe that Chadwick Boseman, the man who would be Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is gone, even though it's been nearly five years since his tragic death from colon cancer. Boseman was only 43 years old when he died in the summer of 2020, and yet he'd left a permanent mark and legacy on the world of pop culture. The fact that he portrayed such an instantly beloved superhero played a huge part in crafting his legacy, of course, although Boseman's award-worthy performances in films like "42" (which paved the way for him to get the role of T'Challa) and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" went a long way towards proving that if he'd had the chance, he would have made an even bigger impact outside of the MCU thanks to his innate talent and charisma.

The highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has been a topic of controversy ever since it was announced in 2019, and it seems like the production is no easy feat either, as Miles Teller, who plays Jackson's entertainment lawyer, John Branca, recently shared the challenges of bringing the King of Pop's story to the big screen.

Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic is reportedly in a “Jam” due to a legal issue with the film’s third act. According to Puck, Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic is undergoing significant rewrites and reshoots because of a deal the Jackson estate made with one of the Gloved One’s child molestation accusers. Before the snag, the biopic was scheduled to moonwalk into theaters on October 3, 2025. However, that date is uncertain after Jackson’s legal team and the family of Jordan Chandler, the then 13-year-old who accused Jackson of molestation in 1993, disagreed about specific details.
The deal made with the Chandler family stipulates that they cannot be featured in any movies focusing on Jackson’s life. However, the third act portion of the script for Fuqua’s Michael focuses significantly on the Chandlers’ 1993 legal battle with the King of Pop, which ended in a $20 million settlement. The Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, could very well become one of the biggest musical biopics ever made due to the entertainer's worldwide reach, which has only increased since his passing in 2009. Any studio wants their film to be successful, but a new legal wrinkle regarding the film may result in very costly reshoots that could balloon the movie's already reported $150 million+ budget.
According to a report from Puck, Michael may face delays due to having to reshoot much of the film's third act, which partially revolves around its portrayal of the child molestation case involving a then 13-year-old Jordan Chandler. Back in 1993, Chandler testified in court documents that the King of Pop made "sexual offensive contacts" with him, an accusation that played a huge role in damaging Jackson's career, particularly in the U.S.

Vin Diesel’s 2003 action thriller A Man Apart has recently surged to the top of the Tubi streaming chart, defying more than two decades of terrible reviews from critics to find a new audience. The words “free streaming” and “Vin Diesel action movie” really do combine to make a strangely attractive prospect to many casual viewers scrolling for something to pass a couple of hours. Best known for iconic roles in franchises like Fast & Furious and Riddick, Diesel’s earlier work in A Man Apart offers a darker and more emotional story for the actor to handle. Unfortunately, critics seem to prefer it when he is just driving like a boy-racer and blowing things up.

Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel has carved out a legacy as a blockbuster action hero, but not all of his efforts in the genre have been as well-received as that multi-billion-dollar box office franchise. And now, one of those efforts is getting ready to stream for free. The movie in question is Diesels 2003 vigilante action thriller A Man Apart, which caused a pretty major divide between audiences and critics upon release, and finds the Riddick star leading the way as an undercover DEA agent on a violent vendetta.

Fans of the King of Pop will have to write a little longer to catch a glimpse of his upcoming biopic. Michael Jackson is getting the movie treatment in the Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael, which was originally set for release in April 2025. However, Lionsgate has just announced a release date shift, but before everyone assumes this could be a troubling move, this might indicate that the studio feels like they have an awards season player on their hands.
Per Deadline, Lionsgate has decided to let Michael dance again on Oct. 3, 2025, shifting from its planned release date over the Easter holiday on April 18, 2025. While Easter could've proven to be a very lucrative frame for the biopic, the move into the fall corridor could indicate that Lionsgate feels there is awards season potential for them, very similar to the Graham King-produced Bohemian Rhapsody (King is serving in the same capacity on Michael). On its new date,...

Michael Jackson fans need to wait longer for Antoine Fuqua’s highly-anticipated biopic about the King of Pop to rock their world after Lionsgate announced delays for two of its films. The studio’s Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, is moonwalking to a 2025 Easter window (April 18-20 to October 3) while looking to dominate the box office during the bunny-themed holiday. In addition to telling Michael to “Beat It” to later next year, Lionsgate dated Aziz Ansari’s upcoming comedy, Good Fortune, for October 17, 2025. According to Deadline, Good Fortune stars Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen. It focuses on “a well meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Reeves) who meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Ansari) and a wealthy capitalist (Rogen).”
“Michael will bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop,” reads the official description. “The film presents...

The final chapter of Power Book II: Ghost was closed on October 4, 2024, with Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) gaining the upper hand on two of his most threatening enemies. Now that Monet Tejada (Mary J. Blige) is also out of the picture, Tariq has more freedom to begin life anew than ever, leading many fans of the hard-hitting Starz crime drama to wonder if he's been seen for the last time.
More importantly, with Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force still going strong, it's worth exploring how the events of the Ghost finale will inform the overarching Power universe moving forward. Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from the series finale of Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost.
After four short seasons, Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost is officially over following tonight’s series finale titled “Ghost in the Machine.” This won’t be a recap of the episode as we will be breaking all that down tomorrow with two of the show’s biggest stars, but rather it’s to discuss Tariq St. Patrick’s (Michael Rainey Jr.) Marvel moment, if you will, at the end of the episode following the credits.
Baby Ghost, as Tariq is often referred to, lives to see another day and with that, there was a tease that more Power is ahead. That says to me they can continue telling stories through Tariq in a new show set in present day. Add to that the upcoming series finale of Power Book IV: Force,...

The final season of Power Book II: Ghost will go down as the most watched show ever on Starz.
The drama, which is headed toward its series finale on Oct. 4, is averaging 10.5 million viewers across all platforms, measured for 90 days post-premiere. (Several years ago, Starz noted that season five of Ghost’s predecessor, Power, averaged 10.8 million viewers, but over a longer span of time than 90 days.)
The Power franchise, which encompasses four series, has set a number of ratings records for Starz. The flagship series displaced Spartacus as Starz’s most watched show at the time back in 2015 and continued to roll up big audiences over the course of its run. Ghost, Book III: Raising Kanan and Book IV: Force — which notched the biggest opening weekend for any series premiere in the channel’s history — have also pulled in strong viewing numbers over their runs.

Quick Links The Postman Plot and Cast The Postman Was a Flop at the Box Office Is The Postman Worth a Watch?
It has undoubtedly been a rough go for Kevin Costner in 2024. His most recent project, Horizon: An American Saga, struggled at the box office before making its way to streaming with mixed reviews from viewers and critics. Some may even say the discourse around the film has been rather harsh for Costner, whose career as an actor and director has seen equal successes as horrible failures.
Still, out of all the movies that Costner has directed, one stands out as his biggest flop, and we are not talking about Waterworld, which he starred in. 1997's The Postman was such a financial and critical failure that it had an irreplicable effect on Costner's career that few other actors have experienced. We will examine just how badly The Postman did in the theaters,...

For those of us who have been here for a decade or two, it’s remarkable to consider both how much and how little the city of Los Angeles has changed over the years. There are still plenty of the old landmarks—the Hollywood Sign, Pink’s Hot Dogs, that dude who rollerblades around is white robes and plays guitar on the Venice boardwalk—while other, seemingly indestructible, institutions have tragically bitten the dust.
So! With local issues perpetually at the forefront of our mind this week, here now are ten films that remind us of life in Los Angeles during a very particular and only recently bygone era: the ’90s and early 2000s. These films are honest portrayals of what livin’ la vida loca LA-style is all about, whether they’re a glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, the realities of showbiz or struggles within SoCal’s toughest ‘hoods.
