Nearly 13 years after the comedy legend’s death, Sharon Stone hopes to make a biopic about her late friend Phyllis Diller.
The Oscar nominee recently admitted she’s “desperate to play” Diller, who died at age 95 on Aug. 20, 2012, reflecting on her time with the comedian and how Diller prepared her to lead a potential biopic, which stone is “trying” to make happen.
“I do want to play Phyllis Diller very, very badly,” she told Business Insider. “She and I were very close friends. Phyllis made little paintings for all my kids. She cooked me dinner a lot of times — that woman could cook. I told her I wanted to play her, and she sat down and taught me her laugh. She made me practice her laugh!”
Stone added, “You know, she didn’t hit it big until she was 49. She lived in a trailer park with five kids and her schizophrenic husband,...

Mary Rodgers (daughter of famed Broadway composer Richard Rodgers) hit paydirt with the 1972 publication of her book Freaky Friday, certainly a harbinger of things to come in Hollywood’s obsession with body-switch movies. Although they have been around in one form or another for decades (IMDb lists 168 of them over the years), that book generated a real trend that began with Disney’s first adaptation of it in 1976, with the pairing of Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris falling into a magical spell and becoming each other in a mother-daughter swap. The format really took hold in 1988 with movies like 18 Again, Like Father Like Son, Vice Versa and the biggest of ’em all: Tom Hanks in Big. Jennifer Garner’s done the idea twice with 2004’s 13 Going on 30 and 2023’s Family Switch. No one did it better than Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin in 1984’s classic All of Me,...

June Diane Raphael turned it out Thursday night at the world premiere of her new movie “Weapons,” wearing a a pantless black tuxedo look reminiscent of Roxie Hart, the murderess ex-con turned showgirl in the Broadway musical “Chicago.”
“When you’re a part of such a big genre film and such a giant piece of performance art, it’s time to leave your pants at home,” Raphael deadpanned. “I’ve always said that, you know what I mean? It’s time to lose a major piece of clothing. (The “performance art” was a faux classroom on the red carpet inside the United Theater on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles that featured several child actors pretending to be unconscious at their desks and a couple of boys covered in creepy clown makeup.)
Raphael continued, “It’s horror chic. It’s horror glam and it’s a little cunty and a little...

Chicago – The comedy icon Lily Tomlin has touched nearly three generations with her skewered view of the world. She was in Chicago to introduce the film version of “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe at the Gene Siskel Film Center.
Mary Jean “Lily” Tomlin was born in Detroit, and later attended Wayne State University, where she switched her major to theater after auditioning for a play. She started doing stand up comedy in Detroit and eventually New York City in the 1960s, a rarity for women in that era. After making her debut on “The Garry Moore Show” in 1966, she made several memorable appearances on “The Merv Griffith Show.”

With August rolling in, Hulu will do a content sweep and bid adieu to a list of carefully selected films across genres. While this isn’t a huge list, there are a few important, critically acclaimed, indie gems, and international titles that will be dropped.
If you’re in the mood for some heartfelt comedy, offbeat horror, or action drama, these soon-to-be-lost titles are worth watching before they go poof. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most notable content that leaves Hulu this August, along with a date-wise list, so you don’t miss any of your favourites.
1. Skinamarink Leaves Hulu This August
One title we’re sad to see leave is Skinamarink, one of the most talked-about, experimental horror films, which was released in 2022. It is a surreal and slow deep dive into childhood fear.
Still from Skinamarink (Credit: Hulu)
The film is known for its disturbing visuals and almost dialogue-free screenplay.

Akari Takaishi as Fumika, in the Japanese fantasy dramedy Ghost Killer. Courtesy of Well Go USA
The Japanese action dramedy Ghost Killer blends an element of the supernatural with its underworld format. Kudo (Masanori Mimoto) is an assassin who is betrayed and killed as the movie opens. Fumika (Akari Takaishi) is a timid college girl who happens to pick up the shell casing from the bullet what offed him when she trips on the street where he involuntarily shuffled off his mortal coil. That magically connects the two (don’t ask how), allowing Kudo to take over her body whenever she touches his hand to trigger the switcheroo in moments when his skills are needed for mutual survival. She is understandably freaked out, but reluctantly agrees on the belief that the only way for his ghost to move on and leave her alone is to avenge his death via her body.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who rose to fame as the son on 1980s megahit The Cosby Show and had a prolific acting career that included series-regular slots on The Resident and Malcom & Eddie and was a Grammy-winning recording artist, died Sunday in a drowning accident while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. He was 54.
Costa Rican National Police told ABC News that Warner’s official cause of death was asphyxia. Police said he died near Cocles, a beach in Limon province, after being caught by a high current. He was found Sunday afternoon.
The Associated Press reported that the local police initially reported that Warner “was rescued by people on the beach.” But first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs, and he was taken to the morgue.

Ari Aster is expanding the fictional town of Eddington into Queens, NY. The auteur is partnering with the Museum of the Moving Image to host the new film series “Eddington City Limits,” highlighting the features that inspired his acclaimed Covid-set Western.
Aster will be in attendance for two out of the five films that will screen; the program ranges from Robert Altman’s iconic “Nashville” to Lars von Trier’s beloved “Dogville.” The series is co-programmed by Aster and MoMI Senior Curator of Film Michael Koresky, and will take place from August 15 to 31. “Eddington” opens in theaters today, July 18.
As the description for the film series states, “Eddington City Limits” will include “movies that both directly inspired or echo the escalating madness of ‘Eddington,’ depicting powder-keg communities ready to spill over into violence or enclosed worlds so given to conspiracy and obsession that there’s no longer any sense of coherent reality.

But as the country star announced this morning, she will be returning to the gambling mecca for the first time since 1993, by way of a limited-run December engagement of six relatively intimate shows.
Set for Dec. 4 through 13, the concerts will take place at the 4,100-seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace, which has also hosted recent residencies by Adele, Shania Twain, Usher, Elton John, and Cher. The shows (which Parton’s camp is not...

"The Devil Wears Prada" was released in 2006 and remains one of the most beloved films of the last two decades. The David Frankel film starred Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine in New York City. The movie was written by Aline Brosh McKenna and was based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name. It's no secret that Miranda was inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, but the fashion maven wasn't the singular blueprint for the role, as the character was also inspired by two surprising legendary Hollywood men.
The story follows Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist with little fashion sense, who ends up scoring a job as Miranda's second assistant. Between her disinterest in the magazine and Miranda's difficult behavior, it proves to be a tough job. As Andy begins to try harder,...

Has there ever been a more essential moment for a documentary than one about the making of Ms. magazine? Though it was founded more than half a century ago, nearly all the subjects it raised and debated continue to feel urgently relevant.
To wit, “Dear Ms: A Revolution in Print” opens with narration from founding editor Letty Cottin Pogrebin: “Try to imagine life where you are owned by, or controlled by, men.” There are, perhaps, some women who can still imagine what that might be like today.
Directors Salima Koroma, Alice Gu and Cecilia Aldarondo are well aware of the timeliness of their subject and subtly allow us to draw parallels even as they take us back to the 1970s.
They’ve chosen to split the film into three chapters, with each director telling a different part of the magazine’s story. This tripartite structure does make the film feel somewhat fragmented,...

a two part piece on Short Cuts (1993) to relaunch our Robert Altman tribute
by Eric Blume
It’s a joy to rewatch Robert Altman’s 1993 masterpiece Short Cuts over thirty years later. I hadn’t seen the film since seeing it in theaters, back in the sweet days where Fine Line Features was the “arthouse” division of New Line Features, a mini-studio from which so many fine films sprung.
Upon revisit, it’s easy to see how this film is a perfect illustration of Lightning in a Bottle. Among its incredible cast of actors are future Oscar winners, past and future nominees, plus some other terrific actors who are always rapturous to watch. And then pepper in Tom Waits and Huey Lewis! The talent in this movie is off-the-charts and each actor feels individually inspired. I’m not sure what Altman did to get them so invested in their small,...

Dolly Parton says that she, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin tried for years to make a follow-up to their 1980 hit comedy 9 to 5, but for various reasons, it never got off the ground.
Jennifer Aniston finally got a green light for a modern-day sequel, and Parton told Huffington Post that “in Jennifer’s story, they wanted us to be involved in it somehow.” But that ain’t happening, the country music legend says. “We have no plans to be in that,” Parton explained. “You know, we’re all older now. We’re not gonna look that good on the big screen. All of us up there with all those beautiful, young, fresh people... so I don’t know.”
Tomlin won’t be in it either, expressing doubt that Aniston’s version would work in the 2020s. “My sympathies are with Jennifer and her writer Diablo (Cody), who is a good writer,...

I know what you’re thinking: Drama? On the set of a David O. Russell film? Shocking! But here we are. Just two weeks into production on Russell’s John Madden biopic—starring Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale—TMZ reports that a supporting actor has walked off set, citing serious issues with the director.
According to the report, the actor claims that Russell used the N-word during a scene and pushed for full-frontal nudity in a locker room sequence. TMZ says they’ve confirmed the account with five cast and crew members, who allege that Russell did, in fact, use the slur while working with the actor—who was visibly upset by it.
However, the studio tells a different story. Sources close to the production insist the controversial language was originally the actor’s suggestion (though it was ultimately cut from the scene), and maintain that Russell never used the word during filming.

Remember the American Comedy Awards?
No problem if you don’t — the honors, intended to become the Oscars of funny business, launched in 1987 and were dead in the water by 2001. (NBC tried to revive them in 2014; that half-hearted effort lasted a single year.) But the initial broadcast was impressive, mainly because big comedy stars actually showed up for the event.
Check out this list of presenters from the first show: George Carlin, Roseanne Barr, Gilbert Gottfried, Whoopi Goldberg, Lily Tomlin, the cast of The Golden Girls, Shirley MacLaine and Pee-wee Herman, for starters. That wouldn’t have been a bad guest list for SNL50.
1987 was a mixed-bag year for comedy. There was Carlin calling out the nominees for the year’s Funniest Newcomer, a list that somehow included Alf. Another Woody — pre-pariah Woody Allen — took home Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture for Hannah and Her Sisters.

Benton’s influence in Hollywood is vast, with writing credits for such classics as the 1984 Period Drama Places in the Heart and Richard Donner’s Superman (with Mario Puzo and Leslie Newman), starring Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman.
With Places in the Heart, a coming-of-age drama Robert Benton wrote and directed, the filmmaker shared an autobiographical epic based on his grandmother’s arduous experiences during the Depression in Texas. Sally Field, Lindsay Crouse, Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, John Malkovich, and Danny Glover lead the 1930s-set film, which focuses on a widow with two small children who tries to save her small 40-acre farm with the...

Three-time Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Robert Benton, who helmed the 1979 best picture Oscar winner “Kramer vs. Kramer” as well as such films as “The Late Show,” “Places in the Heart” and “Nobody’s Fool” and collaborated on the screenplay for “Bonnie and Clyde,” died Sunday in Manhattan. He was 92.
His death was confirmed to the New York Times by his assistant and manager Marisa Forzano.
Benton, who started out as an art director at Esquire magazine, was partnered early on with fellow Esquire alumnus David Newman. They penned the innovative, award-winning 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde,” which launched both their careers. They gradually diverged as Benton expanded into directing starting with “Bad Company,” starring Jeff Bridges.
After “Kramer,” he continued to turn out dramatic films, which he often wrote as well as directed. He brought Oscar fortune to actors including Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Sally Field, John Malkovich, Jane Alexander and Paul Newman,...

On May 7, 2022, a historic moment in comedy unfolded at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. LGBTQ+ comedians from around the world gathered for an unprecedented performance celebrating diverse voices and groundbreaking achievements in Netflix's stand-up special Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration. While audiences may have viewed it as an epic comedy night, for filmmaker Page Hurwitz, it became much more: the backbone of her documentary, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution.
“The truth is that the documentary came first,” Hurwitz tells Gold Derby. “When I envisioned the documentary, I envisioned having this big LGBTQ historic comedy show that would serve as sort of this energetic spine and envelope for a documentary. When I pitched the concept to Netflix, they loved it. What I wanted to do is create a documentary that felt as dynamic as our community. By combining these disparate elements of having original performances with sit down interviews, with their taped footage,...

Dolly Parton is an icon in music, film, philanthropy and more. She’s been in the entertainment industry for nearly sixty years. But it wasn’t easy to achieve the massive level of success she has today. The singer revealed the true secret behind her success.
Dolly Parton Never Stops Hustling
Dolly Parton introduced herself to the entertainment industry in 1967 with her debut album, “Hello, I’m Dolly.” The album caught the interested of Porter Wagoner, who invited Dolly to appear on his self-titled TV show. Dolly Parton was his sidekick until 1974 when she decided to get out from the shadows and break out on her own.
After successfully nurturing her music career, Dolly Parton added “actress” to her resume with a role in the 1980 movie “9 to 5.” She also contributed the title song to the hit flick. Dolly Parton is still close with co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

With the prevalence of streaming services and online content, it has become increasingly rare to start the weekend with fun — yet, surprisingly educational — cartoons. One underrated Saturday-morning cartoon from the 1990s is still a great show to watch with the whole family.
The Magic School Bus premiered in 1994. In each episode of the series, eccentric teacher Ms. Frizzle takes her students on “field trips” to places like outer space, the Arctic, and the inside of a sick person’s body. Thirty years after its release, it maintains its quality and originality.
The Magic School Bus Blends Fantasy and Science
While the answers to many of the questions posed on the Magic School Bus could be answered without the pomp and circumstance of a Frizzle “field trip,” the adventure element of the show is part of what makes it interesting for audiences of all ages. Plus, Ms. Frizzle’s general excitement...

Oscar-winning filmmaker Ezra Edelman’s Prince project is joining a select list of documentaries with a dubious distinction – fated not to see the light of day. It happened with Lily Tomlin, the 1986 documentary directed by Nick Broomfield and Joan Churchill that has rarely been exhibited publicly. And in the 1970s, the Rolling Stones sued to keep director Robert Frank from releasing his documentary C**ksucker Blues, a film that chronicled a drug-fueled Stones concert tour of the U.S.
In the case of The Book of Prince, Edelman’s docuseries on the musician, Netflix scuttled the project under pressure from Prince’s estate, which saw a cut of the series and didn’t like its portrait of the Purple Rainmaker. Edelman sharply criticized that decision in an interview that aired last week on the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast.

Fans of Michelle Pfeiffer will get an opportunity to celebrate wildly — let’s call that “makin’ whoopee” — when she leaves her handprints and footprints in cement at the Tcl Chinese Theatre next month.
The ceremony will take place during the April 24-27 TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Thursday.
One of Pfeiffer’s most unforgettable performances — that of smoldering lounge singer Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), for which she received the second of her three career Oscar nominations — will be showcased at the 16th annual event as well. (Watch her in that film on the piano, and we do mean On the piano, here.)

Sean Murray has worked with some serious talent on NCIS, but when it comes to his top three favorite guest stars, he totally swerved past the obvious picks. No Jamie Lee Curtis. No Zac Efron. Instead, he gave a shout out to actors who didn’t just crush their roles but left a lasting mark on him personally. And with NCIS running for two freaking decades, that’s saying something.

It's probably no accident that the Screen Actors Guild chose a feminist heroine like Jane Fonda as the 60th recipient of its Life Achievement Award. Who better than an outspoken 87-year-old activist and cultural icon to meet the divisive moment with a rousing SAG Awards speech? As SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said in announcing the honor, "Jane Fonda is a trailblazer and an extraordinary talent — a dynamic force who has shaped the landscape of entertainment, advocacy, and culture with unwavering passion. We honor Jane not only for her artistic brilliance but for the profound legacy of activism and empowerment she has created."
Fonda didn't disappoint on Sunday. Following a spirited introduction by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Fonda used her platform as a defiant, emotional call to arms and an opportunity to remind her audience of fellow actors that it's time to stand up amid a fraught political climate.

Jane Fonda may be 87, but she’s not about to slow down any time soon.
The two-time Oscar winner, who received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award at the 2025 SAG Awards, said she saw the honor and the enthusiastic reception she received from the Hollywood stars in the audience, who gave her a standing ovation, as more of a “go-girl kick-ass” form of encouragement instead of something being given to someone toward the end of their life.
“Which is good because I’m not done,” Fonda said.
During her speech, Fonda looked back on her “really weird” acting career — including roles in Klute, Coming Home, Barbarella, 9 to 5, Grace and Frankie, Monster in Law, The Newsroom, 80 for Brady and Book Club and its sequel — and expressed support for the opportunities given to her onscreen.

"The little woman wrote giant works of art." Greenwich Ent, has revealed the official trailer for a music biopic documentary film titled Janis Ian: Breaking Silence, made by doc filmmaker Varda Bar-Kar. This first premiered at Doc NYC last year and opens in US theaters at the end of March this spring. The life and songbook of Janis Ian mirrored the awakening of American women in the 1960s & '70s, as they found their voices and embraced their power during this time of change. In the 1960s, as a teenager, acclaimed American singer-songwriter Janis Ian used to jam with Jimi Hendrix in Greenwich Village bars and partied with Janis Joplin, who jokingly called herself "the other Janis." She later befriended Bruce Springsteen as they simultaneously recorded albums at the same studio. In the 80s, she played duets with Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson in Nashville. She lived the adventurous life of a rock star.

Since 1975 nearly a thousand hosts have graced the stage at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center for “Saturday Night Live.”
Actors, comedians, musicians and even politicians have taken the stage to make America laugh on Saturday night for 50 seasons. Twenty five of these hosts have been inducted into the “Five Timers Club.” The club was first introduced during Tom Hanks’ 1990 monologue, featuring Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon.
During Martin Short’s December 2024 appearance, several Five Timers Club members popped up on the show to welcome him into the club, including Emma Stone, Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig and more, to give him the ceremonial robe.
Alec Baldwin has hosted the show 17 times, the most in the series’ history, with Martin, Hanks, Buck Henry and John Goodman following close behind.
As the show celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, we have rounded up every person who has hosted the sketch show.

Robert Altman was the iconoclastic filmmaker and one of the few directors to have an adjective made out of his name. Altman’s work was not limited to films — he began his career by directing episodic television shows (winning an Emmy for directing HBO’s “Tanner ’88”), as well as mounting numerous operas and other stage productions.
But Altman’s love was truly making films. To accomplish his signature overlapping dialogue, he designed innovative sound systems on which filmmakers still rely today. His sets were always a party (some would say a bacchanal), and actors clamored to work with him. Studios, however, would regularly butt heads with Altman, who would promise them a potentially commercial genre picture, then set out to subvert the familiar genre completely. The studios would largely hate it, but his fans would eat it up. Having finally achieved success in film in his 40s, he became a middle-aged wonder boy,...

If Lorne Michaels is the father of “Saturday Night Live,” then Rosie Shuster is its criminally under-acknowledged mother. Michaels may be prolific for his ability to wrangle talent and reassure network heads, but Shuster was vital in establishing the tone of this comedy institution that turns 50 this year.
“The show was one of the first to break through and represent what was actually going on,” Rosie Shuster told TheWrap during an extensive interview ahead of the “SNL” milestone.
When Shuster is written about, it’s often through the men in her life. The daughter of the Canadian comedy legend Frank Shuster, she is credited with introducing Michaels to the world of professional comedy. The two started writing together in high school and were married from 1967 to 1980. Their professional lives were just as intertwined as their personal as they both began their careers on “The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour,” contributed...

“When I started out, I wanted to be really famous,” Janis Ian says in the trailer for her upcoming documentary. “So naive.”
In the exclusive trailer above, Varda Bar-Kar’s Janis Ian: Breaking Silence follows the singer-songwriter’s career that kicked off in 1965, when a 14-year-old from New Jersey dropped the scorching “Society’s Child.”
The track about an interracial relationship was met with deep controversy — she even received death threats — but she followed that up with her masterpiece “At Seventeen,” which she performed on the first episode of Saturday Night Live.

Exclusive: As NBC prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, it’s interesting to recall the show’s second official musical guest – singer-songwriter Janis Ian. On October 11, 1975, she riveted the audience with a performance of her smash hit “At 17,” a ballad of high school heartbreak and rejection.
The full breadth of Ian’s life and career is explored in the documentary Janis Ian: Breaking Silence directed by Varda Bar-Kar (Fandango at the Wall). Today, Greenwich Entertainment announced it has acquired U.S. rights to the film, with plans to release it theatrically on March 28.
The film, a Wild Rose Pictures production in association with Groundstorm Media and American Masters Pictures, will make its broadcast and streaming premiere as part of the PBS series American Masters later this year.
