The 15 Best ‘Die Hard’ Knockoffs Ever
Image
There are lots of great movies out there, but only a few can claim to have created their own genre. John McTiernan’s action classic “Die Hard” is one of them. Sure, it didn’t come from out of nowhere — the premise of villains taking hostages, and a hero taking them down from within dates back at least as far as the Oscar-winning John Huston thriller “Key Largo,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall — but it put all the pieces together in one lucrative, easy to copy framework. And boy, did Hollywood copy it. Over and over and over again.

Yes, in the wake of “Die Hard” there have been borderline countless riffs on the same basic premise: Bad guys take over a thingy, a good guy just happens to be at the thingy, the good guy foils all the bad guys’ plans. Just change the thingy, and/or change the heroes/villains,...

Valerie Mahaffey, ‘Young Sheldon’ and ‘Seinfeld’ Actress, Dead at 71
Image
Valerie Mahaffey has sadly passed away at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer. She will be remembered for her work in Young Sheldon and Jack and Jill, and also for starring alongside Tim Allen in Jungle 2 Jungle. We send our condolences to Mahaffey’s friends and family during this difficult time.

It’s unclear how long she had been battling cancer. Mahaffey was born on June 16, 1953, in Sumatra, Indonesia. Hailing from an American family, her father was a petroleum worker, which led to their family moving around during her childhood. She spent many of her early years in Indonesia, Nigeria, and the U.K. It wasn’t until she was 16 that her family relocated to Austin, Texas, and she ultimately graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts before beginning her Broadway and Hollywood careers.

Mahaffey made her acting debut in 1997 on Tell Me My Name,...

This Forgotten George A. Romero Cult Classic Horror Is Getting a 4K Uhd Release
Image
If you thought that the only deadly simian that you would see on your screen this year was Osgood Perkins' adaptation of Stephen King's The Monkey, you thought wrong. Next month, a cult-classic movie by horror master George A. Romero (Night of the LivingDead) is getting the 4K Uhd treatment: Monkey Shines. The 1988 movie is often overshadowed by Romero's more famous movies, but this one earned a small cult status after an initial lukewarm reception. The special 2-disc edition will be released on June 3.

Monkey Shines tells the story of Allan (Jason Beghe), a man who suffers a terrible accident that makes him quadriplegic. After that, he is given a service monkey appointed to help him with daily tasks. By sheer coincidence, many actors involved with the franchise are well-known for featuring in fantasy, sci-fi, and horror works. The stars of Chicago Pd have had major roles in franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Arrowverse, and in movies like Monkey Shines. Demolition Man 2 Is Still A Better Stallone Sequel Idea Than Cliffhanger 2
Image
A reboot of 1993's Cliffhanger is in the works, but Demolition Man 2 is Sylvester Stallone's best follow-up to one of his '90s hits. Cliffhanger was a big hit for Stallone in 1993, with Stallone portraying mountain rescue expert Gabe Walker, long-haunted by a failed rescue mission in the movie's opening. Walker and his fellow rescue experts Hal Tucker (Michael Rooker) and Jessie (Janine Turner) find themselves battling professional thief Eric Qualen (John Lithgow) and his gang, who are in pursuit of three cases full of millions of dollars in the mountains.

Cliffhanger is set to be revived on cinema screens, with Stallone himself on-board and the new Cliffhanger described as a reboot in Deadline's report. While Cliffhanger remains one of Stallone's career highlights, his 1993 action-comedy Demolition Man not only shares that distinction, but has also grown in appreciation in the decades since its release. Stallone has also spoken of...

Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993: ‘Picket Fences’ and ‘Seinfeld’ clean up

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.

For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

Sylvester Stallone Set For ‘Cliffhanger’ Reboot From Director Ric Roman Waugh
Image
Sylvester Stallone (Tulsa King) is set to return for a sequel to the 1993 action thriller Cliffhanger, which Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen) will direct from a script by Mark Bianculli (Hunters).

Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film (Fast & Furious franchise) will produce with Rocket Science, as well as Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions. Casting for other roles is currently underway.

While no details as to the plot of the sequel have been divulged, Stallone will reprise his character of Ranger Gabriel “Gabe” Walker, from the original film directed by Renny Harlin. The TriStar Pictures title, which premiered in Cannes and grossed over $255M worldwide, watched as Walker looked to help rescue a band of stranded hikers, only to discover that they were in fact a gang of violent criminals looking to recover their missing $100M following a plane crash.

“Sylvester Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, Janine Turner and Ralph Waite star in this high-altitude avalanche of action: a non-stop adventure peak with suspense and capped with heart-quaking terror. For Rocky Mountain Rescue, the mission is almost routine: locate five climbers. With the woman he loves (Turner) and his best friend (Rooker), Gabe Walker (Stallone) braves the icy peaks only to discover that the distress call is really a trap set by merciless international terrorist Eric Qualen (Lithgow). Monkey Shines (1988) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at one of the more overlooked entries in the filmography of the late, great George A. Romero. The movie is the 1988 release Monkey Shines (watch it Here), and you can hear all about it in the video embedded above!

Written and directed by Romero, Monkey Shines is based on a novel by Michael Stewart. The film has the following synopsis: What starts as an innocent attempt to have a specially trained monkey help a paralyzed man get a new lease on life turns into a hell of unleashed rage. Monkey Shines, is a chilling look at how one man’s inner fury is telepathically channeled through his beloved monkey which carries out his most devious thoughts.

Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger (1993)
Cliffhanger (1993): Revisiting one of Stallone’s best movies
Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger (1993)
1993’s Cliffhanger came along at an essential time for Sylvester Stallone. In 1990, Rocky V notably underperformed at the box office, while his foray into comedy with Oscar and Stop, Or My Mom Will Shoot was disastrous. Clearly, he needed the right comeback movie. Luckily, Sly was on the right track, with him signing a deal to make a high-concept action flick for Carolco Pictures, the reigning kings of 80s and 90s action movies called Cliffhanger. In it, he would play a mountain climber named Gabe Walker, who blames himself after a rescue gone wrong. While mounting another rescue attempt, Walker runs afoul of a group of deadly robbers who’ve stolen millions in unmarked currency via an air-to-air transfer.

Sporting an outstanding supporting cast that includes John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, Janine Turner and Leon, Cliffhanger was a huge hit and revitalized Sly’s career. It also elevated director Renny Harlin to the A-list,...

‘Northern Exposure’ Stars Rob Morrow, Janine Turner & More Explain Why CBS Cult Fave Was “Groundbreaking” For Its Time – Vulture Festival
Image
The stars of Northern Exposure — Rob Morrow, Janine Turner, Barry Corbin, Cynthia Geary and John Corbett — reunited to kick off this week’s Vulture Festival. During the panel Monday, the cast members reminisced about their time starring in the CBS series, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, though there was no mention of a revival series that was originally announced in 2018.

“Your chance of having a hit television is probably as good as your chance of going to space and circling Earth,” Corbin said about Northern Exposure’s success. “The casting fit, the location fit, the music fit. Everything fit.”

Corbin, who starred as astronaut and retired Marine fighter pilot Maurice J. Minnifield, agreed with his fellow cast mates that all the elements behind Northern Exposure made for a high-performing series that stood out from other shows at the time.

When the Emmy-winning series hit the air in 1990, Northern Exposure...

Quarantine Viewing: Nostalgia TV and Alt Streaming Options Can Keep You Entertained!!
Julia Stiles
The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.

Heck, it's not good for upcoming series or pilots under consideration, either.

While it's possible bubble shows might get a second life so their already carved path continues and viewers can snuggle in with what's already comfortable, if production stoppage goes on for a long time, seasons might not end at all and fall TV could get delayed until January 2021.

But amidst all of the chaos, there are silver linings.

We talk about the glut of great programming all the time and how impossible it is to watch what you want. What better time to check out alternatives than when all of your time is spent indoors?

Two streaming networks that I believe are highly valuable have extended their normal seven-day free trial to 30 days. With that much time with each entity,...

John Larroquette
Ranking the Best Golden Globes Hosts Over the Years
John Larroquette
Believe it or not, the Golden Globes having a host is a relatively new development. Since the Hollywood Foreign Press started their awards show in 1944—back then it was just about honoring film, TV came in 1957—the Golden Globes ceremony was host-less until the 1990s. In 1994, actors John Larroquette and Janine Turner became the first hosts at the 52nd annual ceremony. At the time Larroquette was starring in The John Larroquette Show, Turner was in Northern Exposure. The ceremony went back to having no host until 2010 when Ricky Gervais began his three-year stint. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler picked up the baton for 2013-2015, Gervais returned in 2016, Jimmy Fallon helmed in 2017, Seth Meyers in 2018, and Andy Samberg...

Class of 88: Monkey Shines: The Strange Case of Two Jekylls and a Killer Monkey
Monkey Shines finds George A. Romero in the somewhat unusual position of adapting someone else’s work. Brought onto the project after the dissolution of his partnership with producer Richard P. Rubinstein, Romero claims this was the only time he ever adapted someone else’s work besides Stephen King (though I’m unsure how The Crazies and Two Evil Eyes figure into his estimation). Perhaps it’s this circumstance that results in Monkey Shines being considered one of Romero’s lesser works. As the writer and director known for inventing the modern zombie and injecting strong sociopolitical messages into independent horror cinema, tackling what looks to be a scientific thriller à la Michael Crichton for his first major studio-backed film seems beneath his talents. Yet, I can’t imagine anyone else directing this film and achieving similarly successful results.

Monkey Shines tells the story of Allan Mann (Jason Beghe), an...
