In July 1995, six western tourists and their guides were kidnapped in Kashmir, India, by the terrorist group Al Faran. The episode is believed by many to have marked the beginning of modern terrorism. Amongst those captured was 27-year-old Norwegian actor Hans Christian Ostrø, whose brutal murder sent shock waves throughout the world. A poet, Hans Christian wrote constantly on every surface he could find while in captivity. Most of what he wrote was passed onto his family after his death, and has never been released to the public.

Almost three decades after the kidnapping, Hans Christian’s younger sister, the film director Anette Ostrø, is finally ready to tell her brother’s story with the help of his own words. In “The Golden Swan,” one of 21 projects to be presented as part of this year’s IDFA Forum Pitch program, Anette looks back at the kidnapping to pay homage to her brother’s unshakeable hope.

January’s home media releases are ending on a high note, as there are a bunch of great titles headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week. My very favorite film of 2019, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is making its debut on both formats, and if you missed it in theaters last year, Terminator: Dark Fate is hitting multiple formats as well.

Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Edge of the Axe, and the Warner Archive Collection is showing some love to the criminally underseen Two on a Guillotine.

Andy Muschietti will direct a reimagined version of The Time Machine, the bellwether H.G. Wells sci-fi novel.

Andy Muschietti’s directorial dance card continues to expand after last year’s release of his big screen Stephen King adaptation, It; an effort he’s following up behind the camera for next year’s follow-up, It: Chapter Two. Just a few days after news surfaced that he signed up to direct anime adaptation Attack on Titan, Muchietti has been made official to helm a remake of a sci-fi classic – arguably literature’s most important sci-fi novel – in H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine.

The trifecta of Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures and (Leonardo DiCaprio’s company) Appian Way are set to (re)revive Wells’s The Time Machine for another big screen iteration, and they’ve already locked in Andy Muschietti as the director’s chair occupant, reports Deadline.

The actor, who's played some of filmdom's most beloved characters, including Doc Brown in "Back to the Future," Professor Plum in "Clue," and Uncle Fester in the "Addams Family" films, was born on October 22, 1938 in Stamford, Conn.

Partly because of his height, and partly because of his manic intensity and commitment to even the wildest characters, he's portrayed a series of eccentrics, from mad scientists to aliens; had an impressive, award-winning theater career; and will always be remembered as Reverend Jim on "Taxi."

Annette Charles, the high-school dancer Cha Cha in Grease, died on Wednesday, August 4, in her Los Angeles home. Charles, who was 63 [not 66 as previously reported] had been suffering from lung cancer. In Grease, Charles was the girlfriend of the Scorpions gang leader, Leo (Dennis C. Stewart). At one point, she dances with John Travolta's Danny Zuko and Jeff Conaway's Kenickie at a school dance competition. Conaway died earlier this year at age 60. Besides Grease, Charles appeared in only two more movies: In Search of the Historic Jesus (1979) and, as Annette Cardona, Latino (1985). The former was Henning Schellerup's low-budget mix of interviews and dramatic reenactments about the life of Jesus, with Charles as Mary Magdalene to John Rubinstein's Jesus; the latter was set in Nicaragua during the Us-abetted civil war between the leftist Sandinista government and the Contra rebels/terrorists. Almost one year ago, when we launched at Big Daddy, one of our first posts was about 10 horror films in need of a DVD or Blu-Ray release. The Nesting and Twice Dead which both made the list are now either out on DVD or about to be released. Other titles that made the list included The Pack, Night Warning, Massacre at Central High, Dance of the Damned, Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, Deadly Blessing, The Kindred and Killer Party. With this second annual edition, we hope to spotlight more horror films that have fallen through the cracks. Titles that haven't been released beyond VHS (with the exception of one, that has only been released to VOD) that need the attention of us horror fans and distributors to make these titles readily available for our horror movie watching enjoyment.
